Here at Inspiration 4 Life, we are a judge free zone and love to give others the opportunities to also live their dreams and passions. We have been trying to make this dream come true since 2010 but with so many obstacles that stood in the way, we managed to break barriers and still made our dream come true.

February Feature Nu Wayz Food, Priscilla Vasquez

by Ana Banda Welcome February! Happy Valentine’s Wishes to you! February is a popular time for dates, romantic meals, celebrations, family gatherings, and Superbowl! One thing we can agree on is that food will bring us together! We can all appreciate some food for the soul! This month, allow me to introduce to you a vibrant soul, who happens to speak to my soul through her amazing cuisine! Meet Priscilla Vasquez! Priscilla is a local resident of San Antonio, but of Puerto Rican descent. Priscilla is a Highlands High School alumni and is a single mother to 3 sons and a precious baby girl.

Priscilla enjoys cooking and initially her beginnings into catering started off as a snack business from her home in her community. This small business grew into what it is today because her “customers were drawn to the aroma of my cooking,” she says. Priscilla adds that her now catering venture literally began with one person who jokingly ask if she would sell them a plate! With the help of her two sons, Priscilla began to offer to sell her plates as a business in 2014.

Most of us can understand the challenges in being head of household as a single parent. For Priscilla, helping others with affordable nutritious meals, enabled her to work from home and provide for her family as a single parent. Cooking for others allowed her to “alleviate the stress of cooking [for others] and provide a balanced delicious meal to their families.” With this confidence and consistency, Priscilla was empowered to expand her business and really “make a name for [herself] and represent [her] food.” Her new found slogan captivated her customers. Nu Wayz Food is a growing business that offers healthy options for her customers. Her growing customer base encouraged her to expand to more cultural options. Her food options and flavors range from Mexican food, Puerto Rican food, Indian food, Asian food and American food. Priscilla has taught herself to cook these dishes to encourage her customers to explore new tastes. Involving her children on her cooking venture allows Priscilla to not only provide for her family but it allows her time to teach her kids the importance of food safety rules and regulations. She uses this time to teach them basic dining etiquette and sanitation. Running her catering business is important for her and fulfilling as she gets to do what she loves with her loves!

All businesses face challenges, for Priscilla these challenges are the consistent rise of food costs and the various concerns in possible viruses in the foods. As a single mother, Priscilla adds that running a business and having a new “baby in the home is more a struggle with time constraints because I don't have the extra help of hands.” Priscilla’s inspiration for her catering services are her kids and her faith! “They are the ones I strive for on a daily. When God gave me a vision to allow others to be joyful and fulfilled with the nutrients of life, I felt honored for the task,” she adds. Priscilla values her relationships with her clients.

She loves and values the customer interactions. Her catering business has widened her relationships and she appreciates the team work and collaborations that her business Nu Wayz Food has allowed. If she would have started her catering business sooner, Priscilla envisions that she would have built a team with the same drive as herself! Her success in catering is surrounded by her consistency, class and character that determines the flavors of what [Priscilla] cooks.

“Keeping a high vibrant way of thinking to enhance what you cook is a plus. Never feel defeated! Keep faith and stay consistent,” she adds. “As a cater and personal chef, I help those that are less fortunate in my community by providing them with a home cooked healthy meal when I can.” “Keeping my faith for my next client and keeping the homeless fed is a part of God's plan.”
