“Socktober” Collection Benefits Local Homeless Population

In partnership with Morrison Healthcare, Inspira hosted a network-wide sock collection – “Socktober”, during the month of October. Socks are the number one needed, yet least donated item, for homeless shelters. This effort collected more than 2,400 pairs of socks that were donated to the Salvation Army in Vineland and will be distributed to the local homeless population throughout winter.

All Three Inspira Medical Centers Earn

Leapfrog “A”

We are excited to share that Inspira Medical Centers Elmer, Mullica Hill, and Vineland, have each been nationally recognized with an ‘A’ for the Fall 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. This national distinction recognizes the hospitals’ achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and error.

As we continue our HRO journey, and that of our strategic plan, we are more committed than ever to providing high-quality, safe and compassionate care to all our patients, as well as the community. This recognition reinforces that ongoing commitment and serves as even more inspiration to continue placing the safety of our patients, the community and our employees at the center of all we do. The Leapfrog Group’s grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring.

Congratulations to all the staff at Inspira Medical Centers Elmer, Mullica Hill, and Vineland on this outstanding recognition. Your dedication in fulfilling Inspira’s mission, vision and values continues to result in extraordinary outcomes.

Inspira Vineland and Elmer Named Best Hospitals for Maternity Care

At Inspira, our mission is to provide a safe and compassionate experience and help improve the health and well-being of our community. We are thrilled to recognize and celebrate Inspira Medical Centers Elmer and Vineland for each being named a 2022 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care by Money and The Leapfrog Group. Our hospitals were two out of 259 hospitals that made the inaugural list.

To compile the inaugural list for the best hospitals in the country for maternity care in partnership with Money, the Leapfrog Group used maternity care data submitted via the 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. To make the list as a Best Hospital for Maternity Care, hospitals were required to carry an A or B letter grade on the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assessment for spring 2022. In addition, the two organizations reviewed hospital data related to early elective deliveries, cesarean birth, episiotomy, DVT prophylaxis, bilirubin screening, and high-risk deliveries.

The addition of a new family member is one of life’s most exciting moments. The maternity care teams at Elmer and Vineland continuously provide excellent care to families and newborns during this memorable life milestone. This national recognition is a true testament to our team’s commitment to the value and care offered at Inspira.

DAIS Y Award Winner

Karie Miner, R.N.

2 South, Elmer

“I arrived in the room with nothing but my pajamas, having come by ambulance, and there was no one at home who could help. Karie looked everywhere to find me things like Chapstick and even a pair of reading glasses which she borrowed from her friend Debbie. No one in any hospital I've ever been in has been so kind to me. My roommate and I both loved her. She never stopped smiling and never stopped helping, even though the hospital has rules she must enforce. She was born to be a nurse. You are very lucky to have her. Now I'd never choose a different hospital. She embodies the best of Inspira Health.” – Patient

Carol Copsey, clinical manager, Nursing Administration

Vineland

“Carol is an exemplary leader who goes above and beyond for both patients and staff. She is a limitless resource and is always willing to help. She never says no and makes every effort to make sure we feel supported on the floor. She is a great educator and an inspiration overall. When you call Carol for help she not only shows up to help but is always willing to teach if it is something we have not done before. She also follows up and is great at making sure we understand. Carol is also great with our patients. I have seen many times where she helps to educate them and always puts a smile on their face. Carol is always motivating the nursing staff to do better and to be the best we can be. I don’t think she realizes the positive impact and guardian angel she is to everyone she comes across. We know that no matter what happens in our day, she will come to the rescue if we need her. Her sense of humor lightens up the stress and helps us get through difficult days. The compassion, knowledge, passion and drive she has for the nursing profession is beyond what can be placed into words. She truly is one of a kind and loves what she does! Carol truly inspires everyone to continue their nursing journey, despite the difficult days we encounter. She always reminds us ‘it’s going to be ok’. We make it through those difficult days and continue giving our best to care to the patients. Carol is a great inspiration and I would love to see her receive this award that she so very deserves.” - Coworker

Population Health Team Building Activity Gives to Homeless

Each year, the leaders in our Population Health department put a goal on all employee evaluations that requires the staff to work with other team members to develop a team building activity. Recently, Kristine Fredericksdorf, social worker, and Sandra Smith, coordinator, organized a team building event for the Population Health department, which included making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to benefit our local homeless population. The team worked together to make 200 sandwiches which were donated to The Unforgotten Haven, a local nonprofit organization.

Congratulations to our Dietary Team at Inspira Medical Center Vineland for winning the “Account of the Year” award for the region by Morrison Healthcare. The Vineland team was selected out of almost 40 locations due to their strong operational performance results; maintaining a high-level of offerings in the café throughout the pandemic, including monthly specials, Farmer’s Market, and enhanced snack and to-go offerings; for playing a role in the success of many events including recruitment events, donor luncheons, award programs, ribbon cuttings and more; hosting employee engagement activities such as a cupcake decorating contest and “Fun Time Fridays”; always putting patients first, increasing Press Ganey scores and enhancing menu items, such as gluten free and vegetarian options; and maintaining a safe environment.

Catch of the Month

Jabrea Childers, R.N., 2 East, Inspira Medical Center Vineland

Jabrea Childers, R.N., at Inspira Medical Center Vineland, was caring for a patient with a medication order for penicillin. The label on the medication bag matched the order, and the label scanned appropriately; however, Applying a Questioning Attitude Jabrea took a STAR Moment to Validate and Verify the actual bag was penicillin. Jabrea identified the bag was not penicillin and was a heparin bag with a penicillin label. Speaking Up for Safety, Jabrea escalated her concern to Idena Hunter, assistant nurse manager. Pharmacy was contacted, the correct medication was received and was administered to the patient.

Had Jabrea not Applied a Questioning Attitude and Validated and Verified she received the correct medication prior to administering to the patient, the patient would have been bolus with a whole bag of heparin, thus resulting in potential severe harm, or death.

Inspira Salutes Veterans

On Friday, November 11, Inspira held flag ceremonies at each campus to honor Veteran’s Day. The program honored those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Hospitalized patients who are veterans or active military personnel were recognized and given a keepsake flag. Flags were also given to visitors at the front desks and special red, white, and blue masks were distributed. To view photos from all of our Veterans Day ceremonies, click here.

Inspira Celebrates New Vineland Endoscopy Center

New Center Brings Added Convenience and Efficiency for Patients and Care Teams

In October, Inspira hosted an open house for its new outpatient endoscopy center, located in the Medical Office Building on the Vineland campus. With the new center open, most patients requiring an outpatient upper endoscopy or colonoscopy will experience the convenience and efficiency of a true outpatient experience. Prior to its opening, these studies and treatments were performed in the hospital's endoscopy suite.

By moving these procedures outside of the hospital building, scheduling, parking and wayfinding are simplified. Additionally, the physicians and staff working in the outpatient endoscopy center will not have to have work around the scheduled and emergency needs of hospitalized patients. This means there are more available time slots and no delays resulting from a hospitalized patient needing an emergency procedure in the endoscopy suite.

"This new outpatient endoscopy center aligns with our focus on providing care that not only meets the needs of our community, but also their preferences for where and how they receive care," said Betty Sheridan, regional chief administrative officer for Inspira's Vineland, Elmer and Bridgeton campuses. "We understand that convenience and efficiency are critically important to our patients. That's why our team is committed to making the entire process as smooth as possible."

In support of the new center, the Inspira Health Foundation donated the ownership of its former office space (two full suites) to the project. This generous donation reduced the cost of the project and allowed the center to be located in the existing Medical Office Building, which is adjacent to Inspira Medical Center Vineland.

The new facility significantly increases Inspira's capacity to provide outpatient GI procedures and is expected to perform more than 2,100 procedures in its first 12 months of operation. It is estimated that demand for these services in the U.S. grows by one to two percent each year. To accommodate growing demand in the region, Inspira is actively recruiting for additional gastroenterologists, who specialize in the treatment of diseases and conditions of the digestive track and the organs associated with digestion. Patients with existing medical conditions and certain risk factors may still need to have these procedures in the hospital setting.

LearningBoards

Dialysis Unit, Mullica Hill

Tammy Scovern, network nurse manager of Inspira Vineland, Elmer, Mullica Hill Acute Dialysis shared that a recent item that landed in the Solved (green) section of the team’s Learning Board was titled “Delay in Treatment Due to Breakfast”.

Cindy Rodriguez, RN, BSN, CN, Dialysis Unit, Mullica Hill, and her team identified that there was a delay in patient treatment due to late arrival of breakfast trays to first shift patients. Applying a Questioning Attitude, Cindy spoke up for safety by escalating her concern to Tammy Scovern. Tammy, listening with safety first, empowered Cindy to reach out to Steven Foster, supervisor of Mullica Hill Food and Nutrition and Bradley Bowers, director of Mullica Hill Food and Nutrition, to share her concern and asked to collaborate on a plan to prevent future delay in treatment to the patients.

As a team, they utilized the full breadth of the Inspira network to improve the experience for their patients by exploring options on how to expedite breakfast trays ultimately allowing them to begin treatment on time. A process was implemented where each evening, the charge nurse faxes the dialysis schedules for the following day with first shift patients listed, and breakfast trays are expedited to these rooms; breakfast orders will try to be obtained the evening before when the dinner order is placed.

Cindy shared, “This new process has been very helpful in our unit because it has improved delay in treatment for our first shift patients and increased patient satisfaction. As one of the charge nurses in the Dialysis Unit, I am proud to have been part of the amazing team that worked

together to find a solution to this issue and hopefully can assist other units that could be experiencing the same or similar issues. It is important to understand that as part of our state regulations, patients are not allowed to have food or drinks in the Dialysis Units, therefore it is very important our patients have a meal before arriving to their treatment, especially those that are scheduled for treatment during the morning hours.”

"Working closely with Steven and Bradley, as well as all the dietary staff to ensure timely patient care has been a great benefit to us all. Patients have been able to receive treatments at their scheduled time due to the implementation of this plan. The dietary staff and managers have worked hard together as a team to make this happen and we appreciate them." - Sandra Colon, RN, BSN, CN.

Inspira LIFE

A recent item that landed in the Solved (green) section of the Learning Board at Inspira LIFE was titled “STEEEP (Safe-Timely-Effective-Efficient-Equitable-Patient Centered) Dashboard”.

against the National Pace Association benchmarks. After reviewing the STEEEP dashboard and speaking with staff from a variety of disciplines within LIFE, we noticed there was opportunity for sharing information about STEEEP. While planning out a strategy on how to share knowledge about STEEEP, gain employee input, improve domain outcomes, and promote a change in mindset, the LIFE Quality team decided to go BOLD! We utilized some of the transitions that we are going through as a program for the background to our story. We knew to gain buy-in we needed to create a board big enough and BOLD enough, to get people talking. Thus, the STEEEP Tree was born.

First, we needed to build a big tree on a wall where everyone could see and decided the staff lounge would be a perfect place. Then, we utilized the season to help support the idea that we don’t want to see leaves on the ground, we want as many leaves to remain on the tree as possible. We made leaf pens that were labeled STEEEP, so even when you’re not in the lounge you’re still reminded of STEEEP. We want everyone to think about the quality of work they produce and think of ideas to improve patient care and their workflow. We left blank leaves on the table and on the wall for staff to write their ideas on them and then attach them to the tree.

“The measurement of a high reliable organization is identified by the success of their performance against national best practice measurements in specific domains. The Inspira LIFE Quality team utilizes the STEEEP framework to assess our performance. This dashboard identifies the metrics we use to determine the quality of the care we provided. It also identifies how well we meet those standards against ourselves and

And finally, we played a little hide-and-seek throughout the center and left leaves on the walls asking staff to look for the tree! We are extremely proud of the engagement we have received from LIFE team members! People are asking about the pens and the tree and now most team members can even identify what the acronym STEEEP stands for!”
