2023 Service Awards Celebrating Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
Socktober 2023 The Inspira team just completed a month-long community sock drive known as Socktober. Because of you, 2,797 pairs of socks were donated from employees across the network for local homeless shelters. In addition, 346 pairs of socks were donated from students at the Dr. William Mennies Elementary School in Vineland. All were then delivered to the Salvation Army to distribute to needed shelters in Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties. Health Care Quality Week and Showcase Inspira celebrated Health Care Quality Week during the week of October 16 and highlighted the Quality Showcase the week of November 6. Hosted by our Quality and Patient Safety and Magnet and Pathway to Excellence teams, the Quality Showcase gave teams throughout the network an opportunity to use their creativity to highlight quality outcomes, nursesensitive indicators, patient satisfaction, the Engagement and Safety Survey and our High Reliability tools. More than 800 employees participated throughout the network, creating 28 harvest-themed displays. Employees voted on the displays and chose the following winners:

ICU Fair at Inspira Medical Center Vineland In recognition of National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month, an educational skills fair, organized by Lisa Blystone, M.S.N., C.C.R.N.-K., clinical nurse educator, was held at Inspira Medical Center Vineland in the spring. The fair consisted of 16 ICU-specific skills and equipment stations, each led by ICU R.N. staff. Various vendors attended to support the equipment currently used in all three ICUs. Improving teamwork in the critical care environment leads to quality patient outcomes, and participation in this educational event promoted professional growth and development and strengthened peer-to-peer relationships.

Code Magenta Drill at Inspira Medical Center Mannington Members of the Emergency Department at Inspira Medical Center Mannington recently took part in a Code Magenta Drill—a nuclear plant/hospital emergency code for a person that has been exposed to radiation, nuclear materials or radioactive waste. The Environmental Services (EVS) team, responsible for getting the site ready for the exposed patient, broke a record for the fastest response time in the country to date.

Family Fun Fest Over 1,000 community members attended the Inspira Health Family Fun Fest at the Salem County Fairgrounds on October 28. A variety of services were present to host free health and wellness information and perform screenings. Fun-for-all activities included pumpkin painting, hayrides, a coloring mural, music played by The Billy Walton Band, a children's costume parade, an autograph signing by Birds Hall of Famer Hugh Douglas and more. Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades At Inspira Health, safety is at the center of all we do. We are proud to share that Inspira Medical Centers Elmer, Mullica Hill and Vineland have each been nationally recognized with ‘A’ grades for the Fall 2023 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. Mullica Hill is a “straight A” facility, and Elmer and Vineland have earned ‘A’ grades for 5 of the last 6 measurement periods. This national recognition is a testament to our organization’s ongoing commitment to providing a safe and compassionate patient experience for all. As we look ahead, this distinction serves as an inspiration to continue our efforts in protecting our patients and community. The Leapfrog Group’s grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Hospital Safety Grade results are based on more than 30 national performance measures and are updated each fall and spring. Congratulations to all the staff at Inspira Medical Centers Elmer, Mullica Hill and Vineland on this tremendous achievement. Every staff member should be proud of their role and impact in earning this recognition.

DAISY Award Winners The DAISY Award® recognizes outstanding licensed nurses for their skillful and compassionate care.
Damien Southrey, B.S.N., R.N. 5 East ACU, Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill “I was getting woken up at 6 a.m. every day for bloodwork, breathing treatments and other things. I can't fully wake up without coffee, and since you can't order breakfast until 7 a.m., I begged the aid, the nurse and anyone who would listen for a cup of coffee. Damien was the nurse coming on duty at 7 a.m. and he went and got me a large cup of coffee and a cup full of sugar and creamers. That's when I first noticed his compassion. He went above and beyond his duty as a nurse. A little later, I had a bloody nose from my oxygen mask. Damien hooked a bottle of water to my oxygen tube and I never had another bloody nose. The next day, around 6:45 a.m., I came out of the bathroom to a large cup of coffee, a cup of sugar and creamers and a newspaper from Damien. He was very attentive and always came when I rang the bell. He always brought my medicine on time and made me feel like he really cared about my wellbeing.” –Patient
Ashley Krimmel, M.S.N., R.N., Assistant Nurse Manager Pediatrics, Inspira Medical Center Vineland “Ashley is 110 percent committed to the success of the pediatric nurses and the goals of the unit to care for children and their families. I have been a nurse specifically working in pediatrics in several hospital systems for over 36 years and have NEVER experienced a leader like Ashley. She truly CARES for her nurses, whether it be a kind word, offers to meet and discuss any concerns at any time, small gifts and kind words that show she is appreciative of our dedication. She publishes a weekly newsletter that updates staff on all the goings on for the unit, which I especially appreciate as a night shift, per diem staff member who is unable to attend most staff meetings. She comes in early every day (something I have never seen a manager maintain) in order to check in with the night shift nurses. She approaches every nurse with a smile and asks, ‘How is it going? What can I do for you?’ It is truly special to feel valued and appreciated for the work that we do, and Ashley makes sure we all know it! I LOVE her!” –Colleague

Great Catch of the Month Speaking Up for Safety Great Catch Bill Wiley Director, Safety and Security Bill Wiley observed a vendor replacing cylinder tanks inside the cage at Inspira Medical Center Elmer, near the Labor and Delivery side employee entrance. As Bill approached, he noticed the secure entrance was propped open with a cylinder tank. Speaking Up for Safety, Bill asked Clarifying Questions to the vendor regarding the propped-open door. The vendor admitted to doing so for convenience but assured Bill that he would refrain from such actions in the future. Bill stressed the safety concern and instructed the vendor not to prop open any doors at the hospital. Bill's proactive approach, including Speaking Up for Safety, asking Clarifying Questions and educating on the risks associated with propping open a secure door with a cylinder tank, prevented potential harm. Without Bill's intervention, there was a risk of potential harm to individuals, and access to a secured area could have posed a threat to patients, newborns and team members.
