Leadership Announcements Scott Wagner, M.D., Appointed President of Inspira Medical Group Scott Wagner, M.D., M.B.A., FACEP, has been promoted to president of Inspira Medical Group, effective immediately. He will also continue to serve as interim chief medical officer of Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill until a replacement is found.

Dr. Wagner began his 20-year tenure at Inspira as an Emergency Physician in 2002, having since served as the Chairman Department of Emergency Medicine for Bridgeton, Elmer and Vineland and most recently as the Chief Medical Officer for Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill and Inspira Health Center Woodbury. Over the course of his career with Inspira, Dr. Wagner has played an integral role in driving High Reliability principles across the network, fostering innovations to improve the patient experience and health outcomes, facilitating the expansion of access points – most recently our new state-of-the-art Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill – to drive convenience for the South Jersey community, and much more.

In his new role as president of Inspira Medical Group, Dr. Wagner will be responsible for driving a number of domains within our strategic plan. He will lead, develop and expand Inspira Medical Group – ensuring regional expansion and service line development, all while continuing to place the patient at the center of all we do. Dr. Wagner will be responsible for the strategy, growth, and operational performance for the medical group, leading all employed clinicians to achieve better health outcomes for our patients.

He will also drive superior clinical and affordability outcomes across the Medical Group by leading initiatives focused on improving value, quality, safety, communication and service.

Michelle Marshall Appointed System Vice President of Business Development Michelle Marshall has been promoted to system vice president of Business Development and Strategy. For nearly 13 years, Michelle has collaborated with Inspira’s leadership to develop and execute strategic plans that drive growth both from a revenue and market share perspective. In her new role, Michelle will oversee Strategy & Planning, Business Development, Physician Liaisons and Physician Recruitment, all of which play a critical role in propelling a number of domains within our strategic plan.

Jim Cooper Appointed Assistant Vice President of Patient Experience Jim Cooper, MBA, CPXP, has been promoted to associate vice president of Patient Experience. Jim began his career at Inspira as a Business Analyst in 2018, and most recently served as the network manager for Patient Relations and Experience for Inspira Medical Center Elmer, Mullica Hill and Vineland. Jim will be responsible for taking an HRO approach in strategically leading the patient relations and experience teams, while collaborating with patient safety and employee engagement teams to ensure the entire organization is working together to put the patient at the center of all we do.

Jim will collaborate with the Patient and Family Advisory Council to drive change in our organization, so we can continue delivering the highest standard of safe, comprehensive and compassionate care to our patients and their families. In addition, Jim will work alongside leadership across the network to identify and build goals that align with Inspira’s overall strategic plan to enhance the patient and family experience across all service lines.

Radford Garrison Appointed System Vice President of Facilities and Operations Support Radford Garrison has been promoted to system vice president of Facilities and Operations Support. In addition to overseeing Safety, Security & Emergency Management, Workplace Violence, and Network Facility Services, Biomedical Engineering will also now fall under his purview. We are confident that, in this role, Radford will continually elevate our organization’s commitment to safety as a High Reliability Organization.

Milind Khare Appointed Executive Director of Construction & Design As we continue to expand the facilities team, in February we welcomed a new executive director for Construction and Design, contracted through CBRE Group, Milind Khare, MBA, M. Arch. With nearly four decades of experience in development and planning of multi-million-dollar projects, Milind joins us most recently from Penn Medicine, where he was working on real estate development, planning, design and construction of diverse capital projects at Penn Medicine Princeton Health. In his role at Inspira, Milind will oversee all major construction projects and support Radford and the facilities team with upkeep and smaller projects.

Innovation Cari Flaherty, director, Operations Consulting Group “Cari is a strong leader. As such, she upholds Inspira’s organizational values in every sense. From her innovative ways to approach quality/information system improvement projects to her ability to partner with other leaders across the network, Cari demonstrates outstanding leadership in many ways. In response to the COVID pandemic, Cari was crucial with her timely and efficient response to add classes to meet our demands to on-board staff. The word “no” was not in her vocabulary as she made it a priority to ensure competency needs for staff for each of the campuses.”

Inspira Safety Coaches Reinforce and Promote Safety Culture In early February, Katy Perez, associate project manager, Quality and Patient Safety, and Meredith Spena, R.N., manager, Infection Control, presented at the 2022 Press Ganey National Client Conference. The presentation highlighted Inspira’s Safety Coach program, and how the organization utilizes Safety Coaches to reinforce and promote our Safety culture. Several of our Safety Coaches contributed to the presentation as well, highlighting what being a Safety Coach means to them.

Corporate Compliance

Corporate Compliance holds their department huddle virtually via Microsoft Teams every Thursday. The department huddle begins with a safety message/story and a review of the Safety Tool of the Month with an example of how the tool was recently applied either professionally or personally. This report out is on a rotating schedule, so each team member is allowed time to share. Next on the agenda is a review of Inspira’s Mission, Vison and Values followed by Leading Reliably, Caring Safely, network updates, Safety Coach update, network and department rewards and recognition and a round table discussion.

During the roundtable discussion, the team’s virtual Learning Board is visible. The team completes a lookback of items currently on the Learning Board and all new items reviewed are placed on the board in real time. A recent note that landed in the Solved (green) section of the Learning Board was updating the Code of Conduct. This update included the addition of Inspira’s new Mission and Vision and incorporates the HRO tools.

Dolores (Dee) Baughman, director of Corporate Compliance shared,

“While updating the Code of Conduct and integrating the HRO tools, we partnered with our Quality and Patient Safety team, and other High Reliability Organizations, to learn from their experience. We were very lucky to have Craig Clapper, author of ‘Zero Harm’, founding partner of HPI, and Inspira’s safety culture and high reliability partner, who knows how important this work is and sent everyone on the Compliance team a copy of the book ‘Zero Harm’ to reference. The integration of our HRO tools has allowed our Inspira family to see how the tools align with the Code of Conduct and how they can be applied universally.”

Inspira’s Corporate Compliance team holds their department huddle and reviews their Learning Board virtually every Thursday.

A note in the Working (yellow) section of the Learning Board is titled Book Club. Dee shared, “As a department we started a book club where we read a chapter from ‘Zero Harm’ and a team member provides an overview of the chapter at our weekly huddle. This has helped us reinforce the use of our HRO tools and keep safety top of mind. I’m proud of my team for adopting HRO terminology as it has fostered a culture of safety and improved overall communication, response time, and effective resolution of issues. As a department we use our Safety tool SBAR when documenting compliance issues, and we leverage our HRO tools for Compliance hotline calls.”

“Our Virtual Learning Board assists the compliance team with managing our work processes in a more efficient and timely manner. Like a ‘think tank’ on screen - driving us to develop new and creative ways to complete a task. It also serves as a communication tool that keeps us all informed and connected.”

Pharmacy, Elmer & Vineland The Pharmacy department at Inspira Elmer and Vineland holds their department huddle daily at 9 a.m.

The huddle begins with a review of Leading Reliably to ZERO Harm and the Safety Tool of the Month. The department completes a look back and look forward related to operational issues (such as drug shortages, equipment issues, safety concerns, etc.) and updates workflows to address these issues. Concerns reported during huddle are collected by department leadership and reported during the Vineland, Elmer, Bridgeton Daily Safety Briefing. Pharmacy leadership closes the loop with the team by sending an email outlining all that was discussed at huddle and concerns from the Daily Safety Briefing. Before the end of huddle, employees who bring forward safety concerns are recognized for speaking up for safety and accomplishments are celebrated. The team closes the huddle by asking trivia questions (helps keep employees engaged) and gives them bragging rights for the day!

Sabrina Romean, director of Pharmacy shared,

“The Elmer and Vineland Pharmacy was one of the first departments that received a Learning Board back in 2016 when Inspira completed the initial pilot of the Learning Boards. We use our Learning Boards to drive our safety and quality initiatives

as well as our employee engagement action plans.

A recent item that landed on the Green (solved) section of the Learning Board was Electronic Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) ordering for adult patients. This was added as a quality initiative and was implemented across the network. Pharmacy networkwide worked with our Dietitians, IT Pharmacists and Network Nutrition Committee to develop the Electronic (TPN) ordering policy and protocol. This change allows physicians to order TPNs through Computerized Provider Order Entry, or allow Dietary/Pharmacy monitor lab work and order parenteral nutrition. The policy/ protocol was presented to the network Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee & Medical Executive Committee for approval prior to implementation.”

Inspira Shows Support for Ukraine

Although thousands of miles away, the invasion and fighting in Ukraine have shattered the peace, particularly for our co-workers, neighbors and friends of Ukranian heritage, many of whom have loved ones in or near the fighting. To show our support for the people of Ukraine, Inspira’s hospitals have been lit up blue and yellow.

As a community provider, Inspira provides compassionate support and care to everyone in our community – and we want our Ukranian neighbors, family and friends to know we are here for them.

Speak Up for Safety Great Catch of the Month

Paul Simon, manager, Corporate Marketing Paul Simon, manager of Public Relations, was in an all-team creative brainstorming activity virtually via Microsoft Teams. The team was broken out into sessions and Paul was in a breakout room with three other peers. During the breakout session, there was a word that was used repeatedly that most would not recognize as potentially being harmful, but it made Paul Self-Check using STAR and call a “Time Out” to ARCC up his concern.

Using ARCC, Paul asked the team if he could educate them on the origin of the word, requested a change of word choice, and communicated his concern on how the word can potentially be harmful to a certain segment of people. His team shared how extremely insightful it was as no one else on the call knew this, and thanked Paul for ARCCing up his concern.

Had Paul not taken a STAR Moment to Stop and listen to the word being communicated, use RED Rules, specifically performed a “Time Out” and ARCCed up his concern, this word could have been used in communications and potentially caused emotional harm to our employees, patients and community.

This Great Catch highlights how our Universal HRO tools can be applied in a non-clinical setting and the importance of a Just Culture.

Inspira Elmer Recognized

by U.S. News & World Report Named High-Performing Hospital for Maternity

As a High Reliability Organization, Inspira is dedicated to providing a highquality, compassionate care experience to every patient across our services.

Inspira Medical Center Elmer was named a High Performing Hospital for the 2021-22 Best Hospitals for Maternity by U.S. News & World Report. Out of 2,700 hospitals nationwide that offer maternity services, Elmer is one of 237 award recipients that have met the highest standards for maternity care for this inaugural edition. “High Performing” is the highest rating U.S. News & World Report awards for this type of care.

The robust evaluation reviews hospital data relating to uncomplicated pregnancies, including five different factors: scheduled early deliveries, C-section rates in low-risk women, newborn complications, rate of exclusive breast milk feeding, and option for vaginal births after cesarean. In addition, unique to U.S. News & World Report, hospital profiles also include a variety of relevant information on services and amenities — such as our LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum) rooms, breastfeeding and lactation education, and additional offerings at Elmer.

The arrival of a newborn is a unique and special experience, and this recognition is an example of our commitment to patient safety in this milestone for patients. We send our congratulations to the entire maternity care team at Elmer for this tremendous honor.
