Speak Up for Safety Great Catch of the Month Tracey Pirozzi, R.N., ICU, Elmer
“Tracey Pirozzi, R.N., Elmer ICU, took a STAR moment when attempting to pull Atorvastatin 40 mg from an Omnicell medication dispenser. As Tracey was validating and verifying she had Atorvastatin 40 mg, she identified that Atorvastatin 20 mg and Atorvastatin 40 mg were mixed in the same well. Tracey immediately took a timeout, validated and verified she had the correct dose of Atorvastatin prior to scanning the medication and collected the incorrect dose of Atorvastatin 20 mg, returning it to the pharmacy for appropriate stocking. If Tracey had not taken a STAR moment when collecting Atorvastatin 40 mg from the Omnicell, Tracey could have picked up the Atorvastatin 20 mg, resulting in a medication error. This could have potentially caused harm to the patient by receiving the incorrect, lesser dose. Tracey took a STAR moment, completed a purposeful timeout and used the Validate and Verify HRO Tool to confirm the patient received the correct dosage of medication. This is why it is important that everyone makes habit of using our HRO Tools. By taking a STAR moment to verify the patient received the correct medication and dosage, Tracey prevented possible patient harm. Thank you Tracey for using our HRO Tools, such as STAR, Validate and Verify and our RED Rule Timeout to maintain safe and reliable patient care.”

Concerns that are reported during the huddle are also placed on the department’s Learning Board.

Inspira’s Education Department holds their huddle and discusses their Learning Board virtually each day.
Education Department Emily Turnure, administrative director, Education and Accreditation, facilitates her department's Daily Huddle virtually via Microsoft Teams. Emily shared, “Being a network department with staff in Mullica Hill and Vineland, in person huddles did not allow for all of my staff to meet face to face. Since our huddles have moved to a virtual platform, we are now able to meet as one department across the network and review our Learning Board. A recent concern added to the New (red) section of the Learning Board was adding hand sanitizer to all of the Education classrooms in Mullica Hill and Vineland. We worked with Infection Control, Engineering and EVS to have this completed. Once completed, the stickie moved to the Solved (green) section of the Learning Board. Other
recent items included revising our Accreditation Pocket Guide prior to our DNV Survey and increasing use of our Learning Board. These concerns were reviewed at our Daily Huddle, placed on the Learning Board and worked their way to the Solved (green) section quickly. The Learning Board is a great tool for staff to see the concerns work through the process. As we continue to grow as an organization, it is even more important to be sure our staff hear a consistent message. The Learning Board, physical or virtual, is a great tool for leadership and staff to ensure communications are relayed reliably through the department.” Cathy Giovinazzi, education specialist, shared,
“The learning board is a universal communication tool that keeps us all connected and provides for universal resolution." Cheryl Baker, coordinator, added,
“The board helps us to make changes that benefit our department and other departments that interface with our department.”

Elective PCI Now Offered at Inspira Mullica Hill As an organization committed to providing a safe and compassionate experience, Inspira is always looking for ways to elevate the care we provide across our region. Throughout Inspira’s history, our organization has worked tirelessly to inspire and empower healthier communities by creating the highest quality patient experience. In fact, our first strategic domain focuses on our efforts to provide quality and clinical excellence, patient safety, and experience of care. As such, Inspira Health is now taking another step forward to deliver life-enhancing – and often lifesaving – care close to our patients’ homes: elective PCI procedures. Inspira has been providing full-service diagnostic cardiac catheterization for the past 25 years and emergent PCI procedures since 2009. In February 2021, the NJ Department of Health made it possible for community hospitals to provide elective PCI procedures. Inspira has been undergoing the process for approval on performing elective PCI procedures at both Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill and Vineland. In December, Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill was awarded a license from the NJ Department of Health to provide elective PCI procedures. Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill officially began providing elective PCI procedures on Monday, December 27. This allows the same team of interventional cardiologists who have performed emergent PCI procedures to date to expand this service into the elective environment. These new regulations

give Inspira the opportunity to make a greater impact on people’s lives, particularly those in underserved communities. And with the approval to move forward with elective PCI procedures, the cardiac team was able to quickly pivot and had the opportunity to perform the first elective intervention procedure at Mullica Hill on a diagnostic patient who was a candidate for an intervention. In addition, while the Vineland center is still in the process of seeking approval for elective PCI procedures, the cardiac team recently achieved a monumental milestone. The team performed their 100th emergent PCI procedure of 2021, marking the first time since the program started in 2013 that they’ve crossed that milestone in a single year. We will continue to share information as it becomes available regarding the approval process for elective PCI procedures at our Vineland center.
Welcome Belleplain Emergency Corps to Inspira Family Inspira Health recently announced the purchase of the Belleplain Emergency Corps (BEC). BEC began providing emergency ambulance services in Belleplain and surrounding communities in 1953, officially incorporating in 1957.
"This is a great arrangement between BEC and Inspira," said BEC Chief William King Sr. "With our country's changing health care system and the COVID pandemic, this was right decision at the right time for our community." "Inspira is excited to welcome Chief King and the more than 40 Belleplain Emergency Corps employees to the Inspira family," said Amy Mansue, president and CEO. "Over the years, BEC has earned the respect and trust of the communities it serves by providing professional, compassionate care. They have also brought innovative advancements to EMS services in the region."
Under the new arrangement, Inspira will now provide 9-1-1 ambulance service and interfacility basic life support transport to Dennis Township and Woodbine. It will also expand its non-emergency medical transport services to northern Cape May County, and serve as the dispatching agency for Dennis Township. When a resident calls 9-1-1, they will directly reach an Inspira dispatcher. "We are committed to inspiring EMS across South Jersey," said Mark Chapman, director of EMS and Ground Transport. "With BEC joining the Inspira team, we look forward to providing the excellent care and service that the people of Dennis Township, Woodbine and surrounding communities have become accustomed to."
