As Inspira continues on our high reliability journey and advancing our strategic plan, we must invest in resources and talent to reinforce our commitment to patient safety and quality care. On August 1, we welcomed Tony S. Reed, M.D., as Inspira’s new Senior Vice President, Chief Quality and Safety Officer.

Most recently, he comes to us from Temple University Health System, where he served as the Chief Medical Officer who was the senior physician responsible for transformation, integration and care delivery across the entities of Temple Health. He oversaw system quality and safety efforts, regulatory and medical staff affairs, graduate medical education, and crossentity services such as pharmacy, laboratory and radiology. As the senior executive in Population Health, he worked to develop and implement pay-forperformance programs and provided clinical support in the coordination of care across the enterprise.

Additionally, he provided clinical oversight to patient experience, provider and staff well-being initiatives, and the emergency preparedness/pandemic response program.

Tony brings with him an extraordinary amount of clinical experience and expertise that will guide us in continuing to achieve the highest quality outcomes and move us on our journey to zero harm, and being a foremost high reliability and high safety organization. He will play a critical role in assisting the organization in reducing unnecessary variations in care across all Inspira Health sites.

Dr. Reed graduated from the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Hahnemann School of Medicine.

He then trained in family medicine at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, and then trained in sports medicine at The Ohio State University. From there, he began a diverse career in medicine as an educator and clinician. He has worked at hospital

Women often spend much of their time focusing on their family, professional and personal lives, and they can be prone to serious diseases that can be prevented – or detected and treated early – with routine exams and check-ups. At Inspira, we have top physicians in different specialties to help women in the region improve their overall health and this recognition is a true testament to our team who has remained focused on providing safe, high-quality and compassionate care to all their patients. Speak Up for Safety Great Catch of the Month

Kristin Pollock, therapist, Child Partial Care, Inspira Woodbury The Adolescent Partial Care team had a patient that had made numerous attempts to bring contraband into the program, but had not reached the facility as the patient’s parent completed a search of the patient prior to entering each day.

Kristin Pollock, therapist of Child Partial Care was completing intake of the patient one day and something didn’t feel right. Kristin Applying a Questioning Attitude using the HRO Tool Validate and Verify, completed a second search of the patient and found numerous pocket knives, and other contraband.

Adolescent Partial Care leadership collaborated with Christina Nunn, Security supervisor at Inspira Woodbury, and the patient’s parent, to generate a security treatment plan for the patient, so they

could continue treatment in the program. The plan included a Security officer being present when the patient arrived and using a wand to detect metal on the patient’s body. If metal is detected, the patient would be physically searched. The Security treatment plan was agreed upon with the patient’s parent and explained to the patient.

Since the Security treatment plan was implemented, the patient has been attending daily and willingly complying with the process. The open communication with the patient along with the new plan increased the patient’s participation in the program.

Had Kristin not maintained situational awareness by Applying a Questioning Attitude using our HRO Tool Validate and Verify, the patient potentially could have harmed themselves, and/or a staff member. Had the teams not collaborated as they did, this patient potentially could have been dismissed from the program, delaying their own mental health care.

Professional Achievements

Karly Turner, PT, DPT, physical therapist at Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill,

received her Orthopedic Specialist Certification (OSC) by the American Physical Therapy Association. This certification recognizes physical therapists with advanced clinical knowledge, experience, and skills in a special area of practice. Board-certified clinical specialists are a prestigious group of over 24,000 physical therapists who demonstrate competency in specialized knowledge and advanced clinical proficiency.

Danielle Williams, PharmD, clinical pharmacist, Mullica Hill Critical Care ICU, passed the BPS Board Certified Critical Care exam. The BPS Board Certified Critical Care Pharmacist (BCCCP) program is a credential for pharmacists who have met specific eligibility criteria and specialize in the delivery of patient care services as integral members of interprofessional teams, working to ensure the safe and effective use of medications in critically ill patients. This is the third board certification for Danielle, making her now 1 of only 9 triple board certified pharmacists in the state of New Jersey. The is quite an accomplishment and distinguishes Danielle among her peers and ensures that we are providing the most effective use of medications in our critical care patients.

Magnet/Pathway to Excellence Team The Magnet/Pathway to Excellence team celebrated moving a stickie note to the Solved (green) section of the Learning Board that was titled “Virtual Meeting Shared Governance Attendance”.

Todd Kinder, associate project manager of Magnet/ Pathway to Excellence shared,

“In light of COVID-19, for everyone's safety, meetings went from in person to virtual via Microsoft Teams. The use of the virtual platform allows for appropriate social distancing, but with all new changes comes barriers. When we began virtual meetings, the hardest part was having the option for people to “jump in” to a meeting to give it a try to see if they enjoyed it.

We didn’t want to send a link only to have them attend once. When we were in person that was easy for them to just drop into a meeting. After some discussion, we decided we needed to post the link to all of our Shared Governance meetings in a central location so that they could be accessed if someone wanted to visit the meeting. Heather Williams, Magnet and Pathway to Excellence administrative assistant, was able to reconstruct our SharePoint site and include each of the meeting links underneath their corresponding council meetings. This allows anyone to go to the SharePoint site and use the link to join a meeting without having to be on a distribution list or become a permanent member of the council.

The Learning Board has been a huge asset to our team especially using it virtually. We are

all never in the same spot at the same time so to have it available to us to communicate with leadership and our teams regarding some of the areas that we feel need to have improvement has been a wonderful experience. Personally, utilizing the Learning Board makes me realize the impact that can be made by a small team that serves the whole network!"

“In our departments (the Clinical Research Office and the Magnet/PTE Department) we are very decentralized and cover a large variety of services and campuses. Our learning board helps keep us all focused on improving care and improving our unique practice. Everyone has a chance to contribute whenever they can and share whatever they need or have identified as an opportunity, but reviewing it together helps us stay connected to each other as we prioritize and problem solve collaboratively.”

Outpatient Registration, Mullica Hill Marcia Haaf, Patient Business Services and Patient Access supervisor of Outpatient Registration, Imaging, Lab, PAT & OR placed her Learning Board in a common area for her team to access easily prior to the opening of Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill.

A stickie note that was added to the Red (new section) of the Learning Board was titled “Patient Flow”.

Staff identified a concern with the flow for patients arriving from the Mullica Hill LECC looking to register for PAT/Lab. Patients arriving from the IMG offices would go straight to the registration waiting area to wait to be registered, instead of checking in at the front desk with Guest Services. Registration staff would stop registering the patient they were with and direct the patients to Guest Services to be placed in the tracker (Visual Que) to be directed back to the waiting area.

Staff were concerned this impacted not only the patient experience, but could potentially cause a delay in care for those waiting to be registered. Marcia shared, “The stickie note moved from the New (red) section to the Working (yellow) section of the Learning Board when we met with Guest Services to review the concern. The stickie note moved to the Solved (green) section of the Learning Board in April when Guest Services assigned a volunteer to help guide patients leaving the LECC to Guest Services.”

Vanessa Stahl, Lab/PAT registrar shared,

“Having the volunteer has certainly helped with the flow of patients and has become a patient satisfier for sure”.

DAISY Award Winners

Tracy Green, R.N.

Medical Outpatient, Inspira Medical Center Vineland “Tracy was not working at the center when I first started going. After her arrival at the outpatient center, Tracy became my regular nurse every Monday and Thursday to check blood levels and transfuse as required.

Tracy was very gentle with me because of the number of transfusions and IVs I’ve had. All was going fine for three weeks, then Tracy noticed my port didn’t look right. She immediately alerted my doctor. After his examination, surgeons were called to remove the port. I was in the hospital for eight days. While checking for infections, luckily none were found. If an infection had gotten into my blood, I may not be here to write this. Tracy deserves this award not only for being gentle, knowledgeable and caring, but for saving my life.” – Patient

Marg Westfall, R.N.

3 West Observation, Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill “I’ve been with Inspira for 4 years, and while I’ve worked with a ton of amazing nurses, Marg went above and beyond to help me out, and subsequently, my patients. I was floated to 3W and had a particularly busy and frustrating shift. No matter how on top of everything I was, it kept piling up, keeping me behind. In the beginning of my shift, I found a wound on my patient but couldn’t find a camera. Marg ran to both med rooms to get a camera for me and helped me turn/hold the patient to obtain good photos. When I was struggling to catch up, Marg helped me immensely by performing a bladder scan, subsequent straight cath, urine collection, antibiotic administration, and enema administration.

She continued to check up on me and offer help. She made sure I got a lunch break. Marg validated my frustrations and just generally did an amazing job at keeping the shift running smoothly. I couldn’t say ‘thank you’ enough to her for all that she did.” – Colleague

Inspira Receives EMS Silver Plus Award

Inspira Health's EMS/Ground Transport Department has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS Silver Plus achievement award for its commitment to offering rapid and research-based care to people experiencing the most severe form of heart attacks, ultimately saving lives.

Each year, more than 250,000 people experience a type

of heart attack known as an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart. To prevent death, it is critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible by either mechanically opening the blocked vessel or using clotbusting medication.

Mission: Lifeline is the American Heart Association's national initiative to advance the system of care for patients with high-risk, time-sensitive disease states, such as severe heart attacks. The program helps reduce barriers to prompt treatment for heart attacks – starting from when 911 is called, to EMS transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge. Optimal care for heart attack patients takes coordination between the individual hospital, EMS and health care system.

The Mission: Lifeline achievement award is earned by agencies that demonstrate a commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date research-based practices as outlined by the American Heart Association.

Inspira Health and Clayton Borough Cut Ribbon on EMS Station Elected officials, county and municipal leaders, and Inspira Health leadership and EMS personnel cut the ribbon for the Inspira EMS Station Clayton.

Representatives from Inspira Health, Gloucester County and the Borough of Clayton cut the ribbon on the new Inspira Health Clayton EMS Station. Located on E. High Street, the station will serve as home base for both basic and advanced life support personnel, including emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

With the move to this new location, Inspira Emergency Medical Services is better positioned to provide coverage to all of Gloucester County as well as parts of Salem County. Prior to the move, Inspira EMS served this region from a facility in Franklinville. Additionally, Inspira has put a new unit in service in Cumberland County to enhance coverage there. The building that houses the new Inspira Clayton EMS Station was formerly used by Gloucester County EMS.

New location will enhance services for Gloucester County Residents

Although the move from Franklinville to Clayton is just a little over four miles, the new location places the EMS squad closer to larger population centers, while still being in close proximity to Franklinville and surrounding towns.

Inspira EMS currently provides services in six South Jersey counties and has been serving residents of Gloucester County since 1979. With enhanced training and education requirements; increasing equipment costs; and changes in the delivery of emergency medical services it has become financially and logistically difficult for many municipalities to maintain their own EMS squads. As part of a leading regional community health system, Inspira EMS is able to grow to meet community needs for these life-saving services.

Research Awards

Team members from Maternal Child Health in Vineland were honored with the Janet Davies Research Award for their research project “Impact of Technology on Breastfeeding Education in Low Socioeconomic Status and Rural Populations.” During monthly chart reviews it was noticed the obstetric providers were not providing breastfeeding education to pregnant patients. To provide the best possible care and promote the healthiest ways of living to our community the team determined they must educate expectant mothers on the healthiest way to feed their babies in a “language” they prefer to receive education.

Team members from 2 South in Elmer were honored with the Betty Neuman Award for their research project “One Fall Can End It All, Be Sure to Document on The Morse Fall.” Their study examined the Morse Fall Scale (a rapid and simple method of assessing a patient’s likelihood of falling) scores documented by nurses to monitor the accuracy of scoring. The Morse Fall Risk Scale was viewed on each patient’s chart and assessed for the accuracy of the score given individual risk factors. An accurate assessment of a patient is essential in the prevention of falls. The team will be educating peers on Morse Fall Score documentation and the importance of reassessing the patient when there is a medical or cognitive change, a surgical procedure, or a new medication administered to help prevent falls.

Members of the Cardiac Acute team in Vineland were honored with the Betty Neuman Unit Based Practice Council Award for their project “Mindfulness Room.” In an effort to minimalize the impact of employee stress on patients, the team conducted research on the impact of mindfulness exercises on stress. Staff were encouraged to spend at least three minutes per week in the mindfulness room and asked to rate their level of stress before and after the exercise. Research showed that even short exercises in the mindfulness room reduced self-reported stress levels.

Members of the Adult Mental Health Unit in Bridgeton were honored with the Janet Davies Research Award for their research project “Color Psychology on an Inpatient Adult Behavioral Health Unit: An Implementation Study.” The team was able to tie patient and staff satisfaction levels to the care environment. With the goal of improving the overall perception of the care environment, early research focused on the physical, emotional, and mental well-being related to color psychology. Research has shown that color can elicit different behavioral responses. The team’s research is currently still in progress and is in the collection phase.

Community Health Needs Assessment Results Earlier this year, we conducted the Community Health Needs Assessment. This assessment is completed every three years with the goal of getting feedback from the community about health priorities in our region, specifically Cumberland, Salem and Gloucester counties. We greatly appreciate everyone who took the time to participate in the survey.

Our community has spoken! While the results are not surprising, they confirm what we already know and give us important information. Here are the areas of need that were identified: • COVID-19 • Mental Health • Accessibility/Availability/Affordability of care • Access to children’s health care • Food and diet We have been diligently working on a community health improvement plan to develop programs and recommendations to address some of these needs. We will be providing updates and information on those soon.
