Thanks to you and countless others, the year 2020 more than exceeded our expectations. Inspira Health had entered the year focused on expanding services and continuing its commitment to delivering highquality care. No one could have expected that, come March, we would face unprecedented challenges – not only for our hospitals, but for our community, our country, and the world.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented many obstacles and propelled health care into the global spotlight, shining a bright light on the significance and impact of compassion and generosity. Philanthropy became critically important to fighting the virus and healing our region. Our staff, community members, and corporate partners rose to the challenge, coming together and supporting one another like never before.

In the pages that follow, you will see how proud we are of how our region – our Inspira family – responded in the face of the pandemic. You will also see accomplishments that may have been overshadowed in such an extraordinary year.

We welcome our 800+ new donors and offer our heartfelt gratitude to all of you who have helped Inspira Health Foundation raise a total of $9.4 million in 2020. Your contributions can be seen at work in our community, Cancer Centers, educational scholarships, and in our neonatal intensive care units. Your contribution is an investment your future health care. We celebrate you, our Inspira Health Foundation donors, and thank you for having taken an active role in helping to guarantee that the highest quality care is available right here in your backyard.

RESPONDING TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC In early 2020, our world was confronted with the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic deepened a movement of generosity – inspiring people to give and celebrate the heroes on the frontline. It reminded us that we each depend on, and have an obligation to support, the strength and resilience of our local community. More than ever we recognized the value of our community members who support our patients and health care professionals.

Many community members asked how they could support Inspira’s efforts to fight COVID-19 and show gratitude for frontline health care heroes. In response, Inspira Health Foundation established the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund to assist where it matters most — right here in our community. This fund helped our region respond to and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic by: • • • • • •

Increasing capacity for vaccinating, testing, and care Providing necessary PPE and medical equipment Funding medical care for patients who are not covered by insurance Completing infrastructure projects to accommodate the surge of patients Supporting staff members working around the clock Purchasing medical-grade freezers to store the COVID-19 vaccines

In 2020, we received more than 1,200 gifts to the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, resulting in more than $250,000 cash donations and an additional $620,000 in-kind gifts making a significant and lasting impact on combating the Coronavirus.

LEAVING A LEGACY Inspira has enjoyed tremendous expansion during the last decade largely because of now retired President and CEO John DiAngelo’s passion and focus on innovation, clinical excellence, corporate growth, and a commitment to the health and wellness of our community. He paved the way for Inspira Health to grow as a regionally recognized health system and ultimately changed the way health care is delivered in the South Jersey region.

After twenty years with Inspira (six as President and CEO) John DiAngelo retired in September of 2020.

To honor his legacy drive innovation and growth, Inspira Health Foundation established the DiAngelo Innovation Fund.

The DiAngelo Innovation Fund provides resources that support innovative health care solutions such as investing in innovative technology, advancing research projects, recruiting and retaining the physicians of tomorrow, and finding new ways to empower and engage patients right here in our community. We are thankful to the more than 270 donors who contributed $284,236 to the DiAngelo Innovation Fund and honored John DiAngelo’s dedicated service to Inspira Health.

It’s rare to find an outstanding health care leader like John DiAngelo. His unwavering commitment to improving the health of the South Jersey community has positioned Inspira as a regional health care leader. It’s been my great pleasure to work with John for many years, and on behalf of the board of trustees, I want to thank John for his extraordinary dedication and contribution to Inspira for two decades. Aiding Hungry Families With the help of local food banks in Gloucester and Cumberland counties, Inspira Health has supported the opening of food pantries at three local schools.

These pantries have provided almost 5,000 families with healthy food and nutritional tips.

Inspira has been instrumental in enabling us to have a food pantry at the Child Family Center. The partnership with Inspira has been amazing and so rewarding to our families. It started with 10 families and has now grown to, at times 300 families.

Good Health Starts with Great Food Inspira teamed up with the Food Bank of South Jersey and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey to open food farmacies at its health centers in Bridgeton and Woodbury.

HOW IT WORKS Inspira staff identifies patients who face food insecurity and connects them with one of the two food farmacies. There, patients meet with a registered dietitian and have the opportunity to stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables and other nutritious options that are appropriate for any medical conditions they might have. Regularly scheduled meetings with the dietitian are then arranged, providing nutritious food at each meeting for up to one year.

Delivering “Meds to Beds”

We know that one of the top reasons that patients are readmitted to the hospital is lack of medication compliance. Providing their medications and educating them prior to discharge increases the likelihood that patients will follow their medication regimen, and it decreases their chance of readmission.

In September, Inspira Health opened Retail Pharmacies at Inspira Medical Centers Vineland and Mullica Hill. These pharmacies allow patients to conveniently fill their prescriptions before leaving the hospital and, in some cases, even have them delivered directly to their bedside.

Events The annual Golf Tournament at Seaview Hotel & Golf Club and the Golf Classic at Tavistock Country Club, both presented by Archer Law, served as much-needed opportunities for our Inspira supporters to enjoy a day of golf and friendly competition. With health and safety protocols in place, the Seaview Golf Tournament exceeded expectations by raising over $200,000 and the Tavistock Golf Classic also surpassed goals by raising more than $155,000 to help support the health and wellness of South Jersey communities.

By locating our entire oncology team in one space, patients who need to see multiple specialists will be able to do so in one visit, in one location and possibly even in just one exam room.

Together, Mullica Hill’s Leading-Edge Cancer Center and Vineland’s Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Pavilion are bringing top-ofthe-line cancer treatment, new technologies, cutting-edge clinical trials, and support services to patients close to home.

Having all the specialists in one location will allow for more formal and informal collaboration among our clinicians and provide our patients with the ability to come here and see more than one specialist on a single visit. This will reduce the number of trips needed for their care.

Carnivale Grande Inspira Medical Center Mullica Hill now welcomes patients and visitors with a one-of-a-kind, hand-blown glass sculpture donated and created by Jane and Peter Galetto, Jr. Named and inspired by Italian festivals, “Carnivale Grande” took more than 550 hours to create. This vibrant masterpiece was created during the COVID-19 pandemic and was dedicated by the Galettos to the Inspira staff for their tireless efforts caring for those afflicted with coronavirus. This exceptional work of glass art complements the “Journey to a Better Life” sculpture, also created and donated by the Galettos, which hangs inside the lobby.
