Learning Boards During their daily huddle, the ICU team in Mullica Hill reviews their Learning Board to discuss new concerns, reviews Quality data and nurse specific indicators, and discusses all patients on the unit including any safety concerns. One item that recently resulted from their Learning Board is the ventilator booklet. This booklet, which can be given to family and loved ones of vented patients, outlines (in non-medical terms) what a ventilator is and why it’s used for critical care patients. This idea was provided by Magnet Nurse of the Year, Brian MacDonald, R.N.

“We love to watch our concerns followed through on the Learning Board and have the opportunity to submit safety concerns to our leadership team.” – Nicole Witherel, R.N. ELMER OR “We use our learning board as a tool for communication. This helps us to recognize needed improvements/interventions and to facilitate desired outcomes. This is a good visual tool that helps the team to see what our goals are, collectively come up with a plan and implement changes,” said Holly Kimley, R.N., Elmer Operating Room. The Elmer OR team has recently solved a couple of working items from their Learning Board. First, the team completed their unit-based council project, which is the Meditation Room located on the first floor. The team also noticed a need for new gel heel pads, which assist in safely positioning patients and avoiding pressure injuries during surgery. New gel heel pads were ordered, allowing for a better and safer patient experience. Safety Tool of the Month: Self-Check Using STAR (Stop-Think-Act-Review) • Stop: Pause for 1 second to focus your attention on the task at hand • Think: Consider the action you’re about to take • Act: Concentrate and carry out the task • Reivew: Check to make sure that the task was done correctly and that you got the correct result STOP is the most important step. It gives your brain a chance to catch up with what your hands are getting ready to do. 4

Going Above and Beyond for Our Patients This story comes from Julie Barile, R.N., Emergency Department, Elmer. She reminds us how our smallest actions can have the biggest impact, and how important it is to provide patients with a Wow experience. “I had a patient that was in the last stages of lung cancer. She had been coming in and out of the hospital with increasing shortness of breath, knowing that things are progressing to a point where she needs hospice, but still afraid to be at home when things get tougher. She was kind, pleasant and smiling, all while being very afraid and tired. We had been talking about her fears and her cancer progress and the little things, like how all she wants to eat now is chocolate (even though she used to hate it). She said to me, ‘You don't have anything do you?’ Now, normally I have something like 25 chocolate bars in my pocket, but that night I had NOTHING. I scoured the ED. Since it was a Saturday and the food cart would be there after midnight, I asked about what would be

on it and was told it had Tastykakes. The cart did come, but since the ED is last, there was nothing on it that had chocolate and no Tastykakes. I brought the patient some crackers in the meantime. I was talking about the situation in the nurse’s station and Harold Uhland, supervisor of Elmer Security, must have heard me. Before I knew it, Harold called me over to a quiet area. He whispered that he had something, and he opened his jacket very secretively, and pulled out chocolate Tastykakes. He said, ‘Here, this is for your patient.’ I walked right back to the patient with my "surprise" and she whooped and clapped her hands and had tears in her eyes, like she had won the lottery. It is the small things really that remind you why you became a nurse.” Pictured: Julie Barile, R.N., Emergency Department, Elmer, and Harold Uhland, supervisor of Elmer Security

In lieu of a formal gathering, Inspira recognized its volunteers with drivethrough celebrations at its Elmer, Vineland and Mullica Hill medical centers. Inspira has more than 400 volunteers network wide who assist in various roles at each medical center. The volunteers are largely comprised of seniors, which are among the most vulnerable population for COVID-19. Due to the pandemic and out of an abundance of caution, volunteers have been unable to participate in their usual activities at the hospitals.

During the drive-through celebrations, volunteers drove up to an Inspira branded tent outdoors. Without ever leaving their vehicles, they were greeted by leadership and given a bagged lunch and a gift of appreciation. “This year’s celebrations look very different than previous years, but it’s important for us to continue to engage our volunteers and show them how appreciated they are,” said Amy Mansue, president and CEO. “We miss our volunteers, and we look forward to the day when we can welcome them all back and resume a sense of normalcy.”
