MALAYSIA Culture-rich and full of character, Malaysia is one of the most underrated winter holiday spots out there. Home to white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and some of the best and brightest sunsets across Southeast Asia, there really is so much going for this incredible country. Here, you can do it all. If you’re looking to do some sightseeing, Kuala Lumpur is the place to go. Packed with soaring skyscrapers, bustling markets, and elaborate Hindu temples, it’s easy to lose track of time exploring this exciting city. Or, if kicking-back on a beach is more your scene, a luxury resort-stay on Langkawi Island is the perfect option. Enjoy over-water spas, jungle-shrouded swimming pools, and ornately-styled suites, as part of a totally-peaceful holiday. And, when you fancy a break from the beach, there’s lots on offer to keep you occupied. Whether you like the sound of snorkelling amid colourful coral reefs, or hiking through the orchidscented rainforest, Langkawi is the island where you can do it all.

AUSTRALIA With breath-taking scenery, stylish cities, and a wildlife scene that will knock your socks off, a trip to Australia guarantees a great time. And, what could be more iconic than spending Christmas Day on an Aussie beach? You’ll find spectacular coastal spots dotted all across this idyllic country. But, in terms of Australia’s best beaches, Queensland really does take some beating. Super-clear water and soft, glittering sand is a given wherever you go. However, it’s still the case that each area has its own unique appeal. Catch the surf at Noosa, island hop around the Whitsundays, or fire-up a barbecue over on Rainbow Beach. Fancy a few days in the city? Then you’re in luck, because there’s no better time to visit Sydney than during the holiday season. The New Year’s Eve fireworks display is a must-see, with over a million people flocking to the harbour to spectate every year. And, with a host of parties, boat cruises, and concerts to pick from, it’s bound to be a New Year to remember.

It’s impossible to talk about winter sun destinations without giving a shout-out to the Seychelles. Brimming with beaches and surrounded by miles of bright-blue ocean, these sun-soaked islands are a joy to visit all year round. With weather that’s reliably hot and sunny, and an atmosphere that’s perpetually peaceful, it’s a fantastic option for a romantic holiday or Overhoneymoon.100individual islands make up this picture-perfect archipelago. So, if you’re looking to make the most of your time in the Seychelles, an island-hopping tour is the way to go about it. And, when it comes to wining and dining, you’re onto a winner with the Seychelles. Whilst you’re here, sampling some of the mouth-watering, traditional Creole cuisine is a must. Tuck into fragrant coconut curries, ginger-and-chilliflavoured grilled fish, and sweet-and-sour salads packed with mango and mint.

CARIBBEAN Like all the destinations on this list, a holiday to the Caribbean during this time of year offers a well-needed escape from the dreary British winter. Think sun, sand, sea, and temperatures that consistently sit between 23 and 28°C. Made up of 13 independent countries, a Caribbean holiday can cater to pretty much any taste or preference. For a relaxing getaway amid a wondrously-diverse natural landscape, The Dominican Republic is the ideal destination. MasterChef 2022 runner-up, Pookie Tredell, grew up in Bangkok and came to study at university in the UK and set up her businesses for a career in beauty salons. It was only when Pookie and her husband started hosting parties for friends and family that she discovered her passion for food and creative cooking, honing her now famous, quirky ‘Pookie Style’. Viewers of MasterChef, and indeed the judges, became fans of her unique approach to presenting dishes – influenced by her Thai and Chinese background and her travels. Following her MasterChef success as one of the Final Three and huge support she garnered from audiences throughout the BBC competition, Pookie is now expanding her horizons in food. She and her husband will begin their journey around the world on their catamaran, exploring the best places to eat and cooking different cuisines as they go – all on their Sawaskdeekat channels on YouTube and Instagram. The highs outweigh the lows 10 to 1. The highs are our achievements. People’s lives changed for the better. People helped when they had nowhere or no-one to turn to. But never a day goes by when I don’t appreciate how fortunate we all are, in this region, to work with so many dedicated organisations who give so much to help change and improve people’s lives. Everyone works so incredibly hard and that can’t fail to make you Thereproud.aren’t many lows, but if I was pushed to find one I would say… the low is the knowledge that we still have so much to do. The long-term effects of lockdown are still unknown. As is the overall impact on a nation still clearly struggling to recover and crime numbers are not exempt from this.

We see some incredible mentors working with young people that have been through the hard times themselves and are able to share their stories so effectively to inspire others. Peer mentoring is also really effective, young people who can connect with other young people has a huge impact.

What are your thoughts on mentoring?

I know first-hand the impact that mentoring and coaching can have. That is why I appreciate the value and what it can mean to so many people. To see the positive change in those that may, initially, feel disengaged is incredible. To engage with people who can’t see anything worthwhile, to help them turn their lives around through the connection with other individuals is immensely powerful.

And finally, how do you relax?

I have recently taken up Salsa dancing! It’s tricky but so much fun and another fantastic way to keep fit. Alethea is passionate about the West Midlands. She lives in Coventry, studied for her Masters at the University of Birmingham and is the Deputy Chief Executive for the region’s Police and Crime Commissioner. The high-profile job means Alethea is one of the most senior black women in policing in the country. She leads a team that works closely with communities and oversees major multi-million-pound projects designed to reduce offending and support victims of Awaycrime.from criminal justice she is also a Director for the Coventry Caribbean Association Limited, a Trustee of the Finham Multi-Academy Trust and the Heart of England Community Foundation. She was also a School Governor for 10 years and a Chair of Governors for 5 years. We have been lucky enough to secure Alethea’s services as one of our esteemed judges for the Solihull Excellence Awards. I took the opportunity to chat to Alethea and ask her just a few questions…

Sir Nigel was appointed Chair of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management on 2 July 2018. The Committee gives independent scientific and technical advice on radioactive waste to the UK government and the devolved administrations. He is a leading academic in the fields of human geography and the social sciences. I had the privilege of interviewing Sir Nigel over coffee at the Côte restaurant in Solihull, and during our opening introductions it was clear we were connected by our passion for Solihull. “I am a committed Solihull nationalist,” said Sir Nigel. “I am proud of Solihull and what it has achieved”. Sir Nigel also works tirelessly as the Queen’s Deputy Lieutenant in the area and ensures that the responsibility of the Lieutenancy is not taken lightly.

We also discussed the merits of mentoring, of which Sir Nigel is a huge advocate. He said: “It’s not easy, you are not there to be people’s friends and it’s a fine balance to get right. I think it’s a sign of a strong manager that actively encourages mentoring. I have found it so rewarding not only to have supported people within their studies or career but also to have the opportunity to meet such wonderful people along the way.”

Sir Nigel’s book choice: Bad Actors by Mick Herron and any works by Natasha Pulley. Sir Nigel’s book choices are available from Waterstones on Solihull High Street0121 711 2454.

As our coffee and croissant meeting came to a close, I asked how he would like to be remembered to which Sir Nigel replied: “Well I never reflect about what people think of me, but I suppose it would be that they would say ‘he didn’t do anything too awful!”

I am proud of Solihull and what it has achieved “ “

After an interesting discussion on wind farms, Chernobyl and his upcoming trip to Finland I posed the question on how he relaxes given the demanding multi-faceted work schedule he manages? “I enjoy gardening, just an hour or so is enough, something I find relaxing and a way to wind down,” he said. “Also weekends away and seeing friends and family is something I seriously look forward to.”
