Here are a also few suggestions for wines that would be suitable for the Christmas festivities. Port is extremely popular at all times of the year but at Christmas it’s very popular, it’s a wonderful partnership to Duck, Venison and Veal or good old-fashioned Cheeses. Cune Rioja is also a lovely white wine that is light and fresh and again suitable for the start of the meal. Goes lovely with Shellfish or Fresh Smoked Salmon.

This is a refreshing and smooth wine made from Pinot Noir from Adelaide Hills. This also comes in a Sparkling Wine also made from Pinot Noir which gives the wine a lovely hint of pink, beautiful. Both of these wines would be lovely with Salmon, Cheese Boards especially with Feta Cheese with a Nicoise salad.

MY BUSINESS LIFE

Rachael Speirs Rachael Speirs is Deputy Head Pastoral at Solihull School

achael works at the Senior School Warwick Road campus in Solihull town centre. Solihull School is a leading independent day school in the West Midlands for boys and girls aged 3 to 18. What does your day-to-day role involve? I am the Deputy Head Pastoral so essentially, I lead on pupil behaviour, their wellbeing and assist the Head of the Senior School, Mr Sean Morgan in the day to day running of the school. I work with some fantastic individuals and am in charge of a dedicated and hard-working pastoral team. What drives you every day? To ensure that each and every pupil is as happy in their everyday life at school as they can possibly be, academically and from a co-curricular perspective. I am a firm believer that a happy child is more likely to be a successful child and our job as educators is to facilitate that. What does success mean to you? Success to me is going home fulfilled, hoping that I have made a difference to the lives of the staff and children that I work with. I fully believe that as a teacher and an adult, you learn lessons every day and to aid success, you take those on board and try to improve every day.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your time at Solihull School? I arrived at Solihull in September 2020 after the merger with Saint Martin’s school, where I had worked since 2008. Many people thought that as a larger co-educational school, Solihull School would have a different ethos or values system to that of a smaller all-girls setting. I have come to learn that this is not the case at all – Solihull School cares passionately for the individual and all the staff, teaching and non-teaching, work hard to promote good physical and mental health for all the children in our care, in addition to the excellent academic teaching they receive. Who inspires you? Mary Wollstonecraft (1759- 1797) wrote the most significant book in the early feminist movement. ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Women’ laid down a clear moral and practical basis for extending human and political rights to women. Mary Wollstonecraft was a true pioneer in the struggle for female suffrage and paved the way for many women. As a passionate Manchester United supporter, Matt Busby also inspires me enormously. To be so brave, resilient and determined after the Munich air disaster in building arguably the greatest ever football team, the ‘Busby Babes’ is an awe-inspiring

achievement, with many lessons for life in 2021 to be taken from him. What would you tell your 18-year-old self? To not listen to the doubters, the pessimists or the cynics, but to believe in what your ‘gut’ tells you and to absolutely believe you can do something if you put your mind to it. Also, to live life, as you never know what is around the corner and you must try to make the most of every day.

Solihull BID Chairman Kevin Johns

Solihull BID Chairman and Prime Accountants Director Kevin Johns has collected his British Empire Medal (BEM) for his contribution to Solihull borough. Kevin has held the position of Solihull BID Chairman since 2016, encouraging interaction between professional service businesses and the organisation. A popular figure in the town centre business community, the 55-year-old has spearheaded Prime’s growth across Solihull, Birmingham and Coventry, and has played a key role in a number of organisations in Solihull over the past 20 years.

Children’s Hospital. Kevin was awarded his BEM in the 2020 New Year’s Honours list but was only able to collect his medal recently due to delays because of Coronavirus. Talking at the time of the initial announcement, Kevin said: “It’s a great honour and very humbling to be awarded a BEM. It’s certainly not something I was expecting and it was a huge shock when I received the letter. “I’ve been involved in lots of groups and clubs in Solihull over the years and I have only ever wanted to do my best to help the town shine.

In 2017, he was elected president of the Solihull Chamber of Commerce, proving instrumental in shaping the structure of the chamber’s team as part of his two-year term.

“In terms of Prime, we have made a major commitment to Solihull with our offices in Homer Road and we see our long-term future here continuing to be a prosperous one.

Prime’s fundraising efforts have seen the company raise tens of thousands of pounds to charities such as Solihull Life Opportunities (SoLO) and Birmingham

“Prime is a business integrated within the local business community. We appreciate that as a business the size we are, we can have a positive effect on the

local business community and the whole organisation is committed to doing so. “One of the main reasons I have been able to do so much work for Solihull is due to the support given to me by the team at Prime. “The business provides me with so much support to help implement plans or embrace BID events. To work with a team which is always so happy to embrace the local business community and support my external work really is fantastic. “Over the years, we’ve done all sorts of weird and wonderful things to raise money for charity – one which particularly stands out is bouncing on space hoppers for 13 miles from our Solihull office to the Hatton Arms. “That particular madcap idea raised around £2,000 for SoLO – as well as giving us all bad backs!”

HSBC UK ISSUES SCAM WARNING TO CUSTOMERS AFTER SPIKE IN SOLIHULL HSBC UK is urging the public to be alert to potential scams following a spate of attempted fraud attacks being reported in Solihull in recent weeks. Colleagues at the bank’s Solihull branch have seen an increase in customers reporting having fallen victim to fraud, with spurious emails and text messages a common theme.

Natasha Moore, HSBC UK’s Local Market Director in Warwickshire, Coventry & Solihull, said: “Sadly, fraudsters are criminals trying to trick you out of your money. They pose as trustworthy organisations to encourage you to hand over personal or financial information. We see a lot of scams where customers are told their account has been compromised, or the bank can’t be trusted, and to move their money to a ‘safe account’. This is not genuine and your bank will never ask you to do this. “Our advice to people is to ‘Take Five’ and to stop and think – does this feel right? Your bank will never ask you to share passwords or PIN numbers, or to move your money. If in doubt, call your bank on the number shown on the back of your debit card.”

Scam Warning

The most common scams being reported are: Courier scam The victim typically receives an email from a wellknown courier firm or Royal Mail, claiming they have been unable to deliver a parcel. The victim is often asked to pay a small amount as a redelivery charge, in order to get your card details. This can be followed by a phone call posing as a bank representative, asking the customer to move their money to a ‘safe account’.

Vaccine Scam With the vaccine now being rolled out, fraudsters are sending text messages claiming to offer the chance to apply for a coronavirus jab. They are asking for bank details in order to confirm identity, often doing this through a website given in a link. This scam is also being done by some fraudsters through automated phone calls. The NHS will never ask you for bank details or to pay for a vaccine.

Queried transaction Fraudster posing as the bank calls to advise money has been withdrawn from the customer’s account and asks if it was a genuine transaction. The fraudster will then obtain personal details to gain access to customer’s account - or ask them to move money to a ‘safe account’.

Police scam

Romance Scam

Fraudsters posing as police sighting that bank staff are being investigated for card cloning. Victims are then advised by the fraudster to visit their branch and temporarily withdraw funds. They are coached to what questions the branch would ask. These details are then being used by unscrupulous criminals to steal personal and financial details.

Fraudsters are setting up fake profiles on dating websites, apps and social media to target victims. They try to appeal to your sensitive side and then start asking for money. An example would be that they might claim to live outside the UK, and they need the money to come and see you. Never send money to someone you have only met on line.

How to stay one step ahead of fraudsters: HSBC UK has recently launched a new programme, HSBC@Home, which will help customers understand how they can get the most out of the bank’s digital banking platforms, as well as how to keep safe from sophisticated criminals - with detailed information about the latest scams and how fraudsters work. To find out more about HSBC@Home, contact your local branch.

HSBC UK has issued top tips on what to do if you are contacted out of the blue via a call, email or text message:

Stop and think – don’t click, don’t reply. Be prepared to stop

Seek guidance – contact someone you trust, such as a friend or family member

Look for warning signs - check details carefully. Does it feel right?

Proceed with caution – use another device and contact the company directly on a number you know to be genuine

BUSINESS PROFILE

INBUSINESS

SHAKESPEARE MARTINEAU For those who aren’t aware of you, could you tell us a bit about Shakespeare Martineau and what you do? Shakespeare Martineau is a full service law firm supporting businesses, professionals and their families with legal advice for life and business. Working with people and organisations of all sizes, we deliver a broad range of specialist legal services and have particular expertise across areas including but not limited to: energy, education, banking and finance, healthcare, investment funds, manufacturing, agriculture, family business, Islamic finance, later living, social housing and real estate. We’re listed in Best Companies 2021 for top 20 law firms, top 100 Midlands and top 75 large London businesses and we’re B Corporation Pending. As well as an office hub in Solihull we have a presence in a further nine areas, including Stratford-Upon-Avon, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Lincoln, London, Milton Keynes, Sheffield and Glasgow.

How has the Coronavirus pandemic affected Shakespeare Martineau and have you had to alter the services you offer because of it? When the country went into lockdown back in March we immediately decided to follow two key principles: in it together and in it for the long term. Throughout the pandemic, we’ve ensured full transparency with our people and clients and maintained an agile approach to business strategy. In order to support our clients, we quickly set up a free helpline for individuals and businesses and created a programme of free guidance and information, such as educational webinars and downloadable guides.

Has the need for legal help increased since the start of the pandemic, bearing in mind the constant changes to the law over the past couple of years? As a full service law firm we found some of our services had higher demand than others; our employment teams and conveyancing teams saw huge demand for example following furlough and stamp duty holiday.

Do you foresee any major shifts in the legal world over the next few years? The legal world is always changing: there continues to be major employment law changes (be that discrimination and rights for working from home), continuous updates to insolvency procedure and increasing demand on green initiatives that will influence energy and property law too.

You have offices across the country but how proud are you to have a base here in Solihull and what are some are the best things about working in Solihull? Solihull is a fantastic place to work and do business. We are fortunate to have great road and rail connections to the West Midlands region, with Birmingham, Coventry and Stratford all within very easy reach, whilst Solihull itself offers a green oasis to our employees and clients to live and work.

We are keen to provide a service to our local community and our office network and virtual platforms give clients the choice of accessing our full range of legal services in places most convenient to them. As an employer, it can be beneficial to our staff to have an office hub close to their homes, but they also have the benefit of being able to access offices across the region and wider Shakespeare Martineau network, giving us great flexibility when it comes to recruitment.

Lastly, if somebody reading this has been thinking of reaching out for legal help, why should they choose Shakespeare Martineau? We’re award-winning and most importantly; human. With more than 900 experts in our team we’re able to draw from a host of expertise and knowledge for our clients, to help you unlock your potential in life and business.

Families flock to Solihull for grand return of Food & Drink Festival Families and foodies alike flocked to Solihull for the grand return of the Solihull Food & Drink Festival in September. Visitors to the Solihull BID organised event were treated to delicious street food and captivating cooking demonstrations from the likes of the nation’s favourite cook Ainsley Harriott, Solihull’s own Michelin Star chef Glynn Purnell and Laura Adlington, Finalist on Great British Bake Off 2020. Music lovers filled the High Street to listen to a mix of reggae and ska

music in the Rum & Reggae zone, accompanied by the irresistible smell of BBQ and jerk chicken. The kids were kept entertained by the Gastronaut, known for his fun shows on BBC and CBBC, arts and crafts specialists Creation Station and a range of roaming entertainment. The arrival of baby dinosaurs and Zeus the giant T-Rex also turned Mell Square into a mini Jurassic Park! Smiles and sunshine swept across Solihull on an extremely busy weekend with businesses and the public alike lauding the event as the best Food & Drink Festival to date.

Melanie Palmer, Chief Executive of Solihull BID, said:

“We were delighted to see the town centre filled with people thoroughly enjoying the festival atmosphere. “The event has also helped to raise the profile of everything the town centre has to offer all year round and attracted a new audience from our competitor towns”

dent

Shop Indepen

n light of everything going on over the past few years, we were very delighted to see a variety of new independent businesses pop up in the town centre, including The Woods.

The Woods is owned by Curtis and Luke, who saw a gap in the market for a quirky themed café and decided to jump in head first. They really have fulfilled the ‘Urbs in Rure’ brief when it comes to the café, with lots of greenery, projected scenery and wildlife noises, it’s the perfect oasis to escape the hustle and bustle of the High Street. We caught up with Luke and Curtis to find about a bit more about the business.

These combined aspects allow our customers to feel completely immersed and out in the wild! We offer a range of simple but traditional food and drink options, which include the usual hot drinks, iced coffees, egg and soldiers and toasties etc. It also includes some very special themed food items such as a selection of grazing boards for adults and children including our Lumberjacks lunch, the new customer favourite, which goes down very well. As well as children’s picnics, jacket potatoes and smashed avocado on toast. We are constantly developing and adapting our menu to offer customers an everchanging experience.

Tell us a bit more about The Woods?

What was the inspiration behind starting the business?

The Woods is an immersive woodland themed coffee shop in the heart of Solihull High Street, right next door to Clarks. As you walk in you instantly feel like you have been transported from one place to another!

We both have always loved animals and nature and always feel inspired when we watch nature documentaries. David Attenborough is a bit of a personal hero for us both and it is probably not an exaggeration to say we’ve watched some of his series 100’s of times!

We have used artificial foliage, handbuilt trees and hundreds of fairy lights to create a natural oasis from the hustle and bustle of the busy High Street. We have two feature walls which show imagery projections of scenery which changes throughout the seasons. People are often surprised with a welcome relief when they visit and hear the wildlife sounds in the background rather than music and tell us it is a great place for mindfulness as it gives such a sense of tranquillity.

We both love to travel and explore the world, going to unique places and enjoying what the planet has to offer. This is where our inspiration came from, we wanted to transport people from a busy High Street atmosphere to a relaxing environment, where they could escape urban life and embrace the beauty of nature and feel as if they are having a delicious coffee within a woodland, even if they are actually in the middle of a High Street!

“We wanted to transport people from a busy High Street atmosphere to a relaxing environment”

to the children’s friendly forager board, they have become a bit of a staple within the shop. If we did have to pick one favourite though, it would have to be the lumberjacks lunch as it not only fits in with the theme of our coffee shop, but it is light and tasty lunch which comes with its own very little axe to chop up the cheese! In terms of drinks our customers say you just can’t beat the coffee, and now we have introduced new autumnal syrups we think they will go down even better.

With a flourish of new cafes, what makes you unique? We would say our uniqueness is being a family run business, offering a service different from many coffee shops, where we bring the food and drink to their table rather than having them queue around the counter. As all the staff at The Woods want customers to enjoy their experience, we all go above and beyond for our customers expectations to let them know how valued they are, which is the main value we uphold. As many of our customers say it is a home from home, every day is different and the seasons come and go but the staff make you feel valued. Oh and of course our theme makes us unique, who wouldn’t want to enjoy a cake and coffee in The Woods!

Why is being sustainable so important to you and what steps are you taking to be more eco-friendly? Sustainability is important to us because we are going to grow up in a society where wildlife is scarce, where weather is unpredictable and where land starts to vanish. If we can all play our part to be as sustainable as we can, we can reduce the impact this will have. Our steps at The Woods are simple, all our energy we use is produced from a sustainable source (wind turbines, solar power or water energy), we recycle or reuse as much as we can, which you will notice from our bin area in store. All our packaging is bio-degradable or compostable. Finally we DO NOT serve any fish. This is due to the other global pandemic which is currently happening, over fishing, which is leaving our oceans lifeless and in turn creating a toxic environment for everyone.

What made you chose Solihull as a destination and what’s the best thing about owning a business in the heart of Solihull? Solihull is a unique destination, we always say to customers it feels like we are in a seaside town but without the beach and sea. As we have grown up locally to Solihull and have always enjoyed its ability to call you back, we love that it encapsulates what a High Street should be. Although it has all of our chain favourites, it also has niche little shops, a shared sense of community, and an ever changing atmosphere, with constant markets and events, its great to be somewhere where everyone care’s about the place they are in.

How would you describe your business in three words? Otherworldly, tranquil and a home from home. We know that’s more than three but we can’t narrow it down any more than that!

What exciting plans do you have for Christmas? Well, we have a few ideas and tricks up our sleeves such as new menu items but we aren’t going to reveal everything yet! All we can say is keep your eyes peeled. You have just experienced our change from summer to autumn so keep it in mind. Personally, Christmas is both of our favourite time of year and everyone who knows us knows how over the top we are when Christmas comes. So, if that is anything to go by, you’re in for a treat.

What’s your favourite thing on your menu? We would say our personal favourites are definitely the grazing board selection. From the new hot chocolate charcuterie board The Woods, High Street, Solihull, B91 3SW | 0121 705 9774

A SENSE OF PLACE…

I

t would seem that the lack of social interaction throughout lockdown has organically created the solution on how we green ourselves back into the black. People need people. Social interaction, collaboration and creativity are top of the virtual shopping list, our wonderful nation

wants to get back to seeing, hearing and touching (and spending) in a thriving environment. Wellbeing, greening, walkability, and pedestrianisation are the buzz words of the now. The Solihull BID team have been busy installing improvements to the public spaces in the town centre to ensure our visitors and workers experience a sense of well-being, our seating hubs with sensory planting, bunting with festoon lighting, enhanced Christmas lights,

Research shows that well planned regeneration of town centres can boost commercial trade by up to astro turf animals and children’s play area are a few of the improvements we have made. We want the people of Solihull to feel proud to be part of a well-managed, safe and clean community. Research shows that well planned regeneration of town centres can boost commercial trade by up to 40%. Solihull town centre presents an ideal canvas with its pedestrianised areas encased by leafy parks, but it could be so much more, and we aim to push the dial to achieve this. Collaboration is key and we are driving forward to gather momentum and a shared ambition to set the Solihull standard flying high over the West Midlands.

Yankee Candle® Yankee Candle® are returning to Solihull and opening inside Touchwood Shopping Centre, just in time for Christmas. Many years ago this is where the Yankee Candle® Journey originally started… One December, a 16-year-old student was looking for gift inspiration with Christmas just around the corner. He decided to make a candle for his Mum because it would be a completely unique and personal gift. Using everyday materials, he found in the kitchen: household wax, a red crayon, string, and a milk carton, he produced his very first candle. A neighbour saw the candle and offered to buy it, leaving the student with enough money to buy more materials to create more – one to gift and one to sell! That was the start of the Yankee Candle® journey…

The much-beloved entertainment retailer saw its longawaited return to Mell Square in July. As the first of HMV’s brand-new, ‘new look’ stores, the Mell Square relaunch coincided with the retailer’s 100-year anniversary. To mark the occasion, HMV has developed a highly anticipated 1921 Centenary Edition vinyl, which comprises some of the retailer’s favourite albums from the past 100 years, including Kate Bush’s iconic album ‘Hounds of Love’, Sam Smith’s acclaimed debut ‘In the Lonely Hour’ and The Star Wars Trilogy’s Original Soundtrack. Remaining true to the HMV brand, the new store continues to stock the latest pop-culture must-haves for music, film and TV fans – from exclusive t-shirts and collectable figurines, to collector’s edition vinyl’s and 4k Ultra HD film and TV titles. Visitors on the look-out for a specific item or piece of merchandise not listed in the store’s catalogue, however, are also free to place additional order requests by speaking to a member of staff in-store.
