TheroleTESPOKwasseekingtofillwasforanindividual whocouldhandleboththebusinesssideandthetechnical sideoftheoffice.Theorganizationstartedin1999with onlyonestaffmember,anadministrator,andacquireda technicalstafftoestablishtheKenyaInternetExchange Point.Thetechnicalstaff,ledbyNicholas,madesureto
trainFionainhands-onsupportforKIXPtoaddressissues whenhehadtobeoutoftheoffice.
Thisprovidedherwiththeopportunitytobecomemore technicallyproficientasshesteppedintosupporthisrole withthehelpofthetechnicalteamofvolunteerssupporting theservice.MichukiMwangi,thethenChiefExecutive OfficerofKENIC,wouldrunherthroughthenetwork checks,whichhelpeddevelophertechnicalsupportskills forKIXPpeeringmembers.
In2008,theTESPOKBoard,ledbyJonathanSomen, begantheprocessofrecruitingaChiefExecutiveOfficer. FionahadvarioussessionswiththeCEOsoftheindustry onvariouspolicyandregulatorymatters,anditwasatone ofthesesessionsthatRichardBellsawherpotentialand recommendedherfortheCEOposition.Inviewofthesize ofthemembership,theboardwaslookingforsomeonewho waswillingtogrowwiththeorganization,asitsrevenue streamswerestillverylow.
InJuly2009,attheTESPOKAnnualGeneralMeeting, JonathanannouncedthattheBoardhadagreedtohave FionaastheinterimCEOforaone-yearperiod,afterwhich shewouldbeconfirmed.InJuly2010,followingaboard reviewofherone-yearperformance,shewasconfirmedas theTESPOKChiefExecutiveOfficer.
Fiona’scareerjourneyhasledhertowheresheistoday throughtheguidanceandsupportofothers.Shehashad

Fionaprovidesleadershipmanages,andoverseesthedayto-dayoperationsofthesecretariat.Sheisalsoresponsible forbuildingtheorganization’shumancapacityandensuring statutorycompliance.Herrolerequireshertomaintaina continuousflowofinformationbetweentheBoard,the Committees,Members,Government,andIndustry Stakeholdersatlargewhileensuringtheassociation’s mandatetoitsmembersiseffectivelyaddressed. Alargeportionofhertimeisspentengagingmembersin thedevelopmentofkeyindustrypolicyissuesbasedonan industry-widefocusonkeyitemsandthensub-sectorspecificitems.Sheensuresthereisconsensusonpolicyor regulatoryissuesfromtheprivatesectorside.Fionaisalso expectedtoworkwithstakeholderstoidentifyopportunities andrisksarisingfromvariousICTpolicyandregulatory

Boththeprivatesectorandgovernmentexperiencealotof losswhentheirICTinfrastructureisdamaged,mostly throughfibercutsandmassdestruction.Thegovernmentis drivingadigitaleconomyagenda,anddigitalinfrastructure isakeycomponentofitssuccess.
Secondly,TESPOKisexperiencingtheoperationalization oftheKenyaDataProtectionAct.Thisrequiresthemto providefeedbackontheimplementationoftheacttothe officeoftheDataProtectionCommissioneraswellas preparepolicypapersonthegaps.Toaddressthis, TESPOKhasintroduced,withthehelpofapartner,anew servicetotheirmemberstohelpthemcheckontheirlevel ofdataprotectioncompliance.
Thirdly,thereisariseincyberthreatsandcybercrime,with anongoingefforttobuildrobustcybersecuritypoliciesand frameworkstosafeguarddigitalinfrastructure,networks, andsensitiveinformation.Thisisaclarificationcallfrom TESPOKonbehalfoftheindustryformultistakeholder collaborationonmattersofcybersecurity
