IamanEmiratiAmericaninteriordesigner.Ihavealways hadapassionfordesign;evenasayoungchild,Iwould quiteoftenrearrangemyroom,drawoutplanstoredomy parents'houseandcritiquethedesignofpublicspaces.I wascompletelyfueledbymycreativeside.Iwentto universityintheUSandinitiallystudiedbusiness,butafter workingforabrieftimeinsalesintheUS,Idecidedtogo backtostudyinteriordesign.Ithenworkedbrieflyinthe USbeforereturningtoDubai.

AtthestartofmycareerinDubai,Iworkedonafew interiordesignprojectsforalocaldeveloper,thenworked foradesign-buildcontractorbeforejoiningPringle Brandon,whichwentontobecomePerkins+Will.Iworked withthemfor7yearsonprojectssuchasGoogle,the ClevelandClinic,andAdidas.Mostofmyworkhasbeenin thecorporateinteriordesignsector,whichIhavelovedto beapartofbecauseIbelievethatdesigniswhereartmeets science,andnowhereisthistruerthanworkplacedesign,as weplayanactiveroleinthefunctionalityofcompany operations.

In2018,acolleagueandIsetupSAYStudio.Weare

currently16peopleandhaveofficesinDubaiandRiyadh. OurportfolioincludesworkwithGoogle,Facebook, LinkedIn,andPepsi.In2022,inlinewithoursustainability values,ourPwCDubaiHeadquartersprojectreceivedthe WELLPlatinumcertificationasthefirstprojectinthe regiontobeawardedthis.Alsothatyear,ourPwCproject wasawardedaglobaldesignawardforBestOfficeDesign attheInternationalPropertyAwards.Lastyearatthe RegionalCommercialInteriorDesignAwards,wewere awardedBestConceptoftheYearandHighlyCommended forBestOfficeDesignoftheYear

Ihavealsoalwayshadagreatpassionforgivingback,and in2013,Iconceptualizedadesigncompetitionthatwould askdesignersintheregiontodesignasustainablepieceof furnituretoraiseawarenessabouttheglobalwatercrisisat ayear-endgala.Isitontheboardofthecharity,called SurgeforWater,withofficesinboththeUSandtheUAE, andwehavejustcelebratedthe10thanniversaryofour designcompetition,havingimpactedhundredsofthousands ofpeopleinthird-worldcountriessuchasHaiti,the DominicanRepublic,andUganda.

IhavebeensopassionateaboutSurgeforWaterthatin 2018,Ihadasustainableandcharitablewedding, dedicatingmyweddingtothecause.Throughthewedding, wewereabletobuild3wellsandabathroomblockin Uganda.In2023,Iwasaskedtodesignahigh-risk pregnancyclinic.Thiswas6monthsafterIsuffereda miscarriagewhenIwas5monthspregnant.Itookitonasa probonoproject,andthoughitwasextremelydifficult emotionally,havinggonethroughahigh-riskpregnancy thatledtoamiscarriage,IfeltthatIcoulddirectly empathizewiththewomenwhowouldbevisitingtheclinic andthat,intheend,thiswasapowerfulsourceofhealing forme.

ThemomentthatIconceptualizedtheSurgeforWater competition,Irecallthinkingthatthiscouldbeaverybig undertaking,butIwassoexcitedandinspired,thatitnever dauntedme.Combinedwithawonderfulteam,wehave beenabletosuccessfullycarryouttheeventfor10years now,havingmadeanimpactonhundredsofthousandsof peopleacrosstheglobe.

Alongmycareerpath,Ihavesetafewgoalsformyselfthat Ihavebeenabletoachieve.IwantedtowinYoung DesigneroftheYearandBestOfficeProjectoftheYearat theCIDawards.Iachievedthisin2014and2017, respectively.I'vehadtheambitionforyearstoonedayopen adesignstudio,andin2018,mybusinesspartnerandI openedSAYStudio.SAYhasgoneontowinseveraldesign awardsovertheyears.Mostrecently,in2023,we successfullyachievedanothermilestonebyopeningour firstofficeoutsideofthecountryinRiyadh,SaudiArabia.

Howdoyoustayinformedaboutcurrenttrendsand developmentswithinyourindustry,andhowdoyou incorporatethisknowledgeintoyourbusiness strategies?

Achievingawork-lifebalanceisoftenachallenge.How haveyoumanagedtobalanceyourprofessionaland personallives,andwhatadvicewouldyougivetoothers facingsimilarchallenges?

Twothingscometomindwhenrespondingtothisquestion: Thefirstisplanning.Ibecameamotherin2020,and

recentlyIhavealsobirthedtwins.Ifyoucandevelopand keepaschedule,thenyoucanfindtimeforalotofthingsin yourlife.Thesecondthingthatcomestomindissomething Iheardfromsomeoneelseyearsago:staypresent.When I'matwork,I'matwork,andalthoughmychildrenare alwaysonmymind,Ikeepmyfocusonthetaskathand andrememberthatIhaveanincrediblesupportsystemto helpmewithmykids.WhenI'mwithmychildren,I'm focusedonwhattheyneed.

Themostimportantqualitytomeismyworkethic.Idon't believethattalentiseverenough.Alotofpeopleare talented.Youhavetohaveambitionandaworkethictobe successful.Youhavetohavesomethingthatfuelsyou,even whenyouhavebeendiscouragedorhavefailed.Both thingsarelikelytohappen,butthiscan'tbeenoughtostop youfrommovingforward.Ialsothinkthatempathyand confidenceareveryimportant.Beingabletorelatetoand connecttootherpeople,especiallyinourfieldasdesign consultants,iscrucialtobeingabletounderstandtheir problemsandhelpfindsolutionstothem.
