Will you be at an event with us this year? If so, keep your eye out for our new virtual experiences. We’ve got some exciting new interactive experiences on offer at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and more. The MotoCAP virtual mirror allows customers to virtually ‘try on’ protective motorcycle rider clothing and find out the ratings on different types of materials to ensure maximum protection.

Our photo booths are an interactive safety experience for everyone. Customers can have their photos taken at the booths and get a digital copy with safety messages on it. Interactive experiences with Daisy and Sprocket from Safety Town can also share their messages on safety for kids. We look forward to sharing these virtual experiences with you this year!

GENERAL NEWS

Save time – have your Fitness to Drive medical assessment submitted online

Submitting online makes the process quicker and easier for drivers who need regular medical checks to continue driving.

Need a regular Fitness to Drive medical assessment? Forms can now be filled out online by GPs, specialists, occupational therapists and optometrists. When the form is completed online, it is instantly sent to Transport for NSW, saving patients a trip to a Service NSW Centre to hand in the paper form.

If you receive a request for a medical review in the mail, simply take the letter to your doctor or relevant health specialist and ask them to submit the assessment online for you. For more information visit the Transport Fitness to Drive webpage.

Digital Photo Card trial is here Service NSW is running a trial of the new product supported by TfNSW, NSW Police and Liquor and Gaming NSW. The trial follows the success of the NSW Digital Driver Licence, now held by more than 2.4 million people in NSW or 41 per cent of drivers. Penrith residents are the first in the state to test the NSW Digital Photo Card. Businesses and citizens in the area can try out the Digital Photo Card and provide feedback before it becomes available to the other 970,000 photo card holders across NSW. For more about the Digital Photo Card or Digital Driver Licence, see the Service NSW website.

Safety Check vehicle identification Safety Check Inspections (pink slips) are a really important part of the registration process. Making sure the right vehicle is being assessed is especially important. Authorised Inspection Station (AIS) examiners must do a first tier identity check for any vehicles presenting for a Safety Check - this means sighting the VIN number on the vehicle itself.

Certificates of Registrations (CoR) should not be used in place of the first tier identity check. Examiners cannot demand to see the certificate and the CoR is non-essential to the completion of the Safety Check. If a vehicle owner offers the CoR or other documentation, examiners are obligated to protect the customer’s information. Information must be stored securely and disposed of appropriately when it is no longer required. Refer to the AIS Business Rules for more information.

Authorised Inspection Scheme (AIS) station engagements

• Examiners only conduct inspections for the classes and types of vehicles they are authorised to perform

AIS stations play a crucial role in verifying vehicles are roadworthy and meet minimum safety standards.

• Mandatory checks are conducted thoroughly

Transport for NSW will consult with AIS proprietors and examiners to understand issues and reinforce the Business Rules that govern the scheme.

• Brake tests are conducted using approved equipment

Key areas of focus include ensuring: • Equipment is calibrated and in good working condition

• Inspection reports are not false or misleading

• Unsafe vehicles do not pass inspections • AIS Online (the portal) terms and conditions are adhered to.

Come see us at the Sydney Royal Easter Show! Transport for NSW will once again highlight simple things everyone can do to keep safe and play their part in working Towards Zero fatalities on NSW roads and waterways.

April 1-12, 2021 1 Showground Rd Sydney Olympic Park

This year’s exhibit includes an augmented reality experience using a top ANCAP-rated electric vehicle, a virtual mirror with the latest motorcycle protective clothing and for children, the opportunity to interact with our photo booth with Safety Town superstars Daisy and Sprocket. The exhibit will also feature a chance to test your boating knowledge and skills through an interactive navigation exercise.

BUS INDUSTRY NEWS Reminder for Bus Drivers – Failure to disclose offences Drivers who hold a NSW Driver Authority are required to disclose any traffic offences in Part B of the digital application form. The question asks if you have been issued any penalty notices or have been found guilty/convicted by a court for offences that relate to driving of a motor vehicle in any jurisdiction (excluding parking tickets). Attempting to renew your Driver Authority by not disclosing all traffic violations is an offence under Section 54 of the Passenger Transport Act 1990 and 2014 and disciplinary action may be taken.

Bus Safety Week: Public awareness campaign

Bus injuries & fatalities*

Be Bus Aware highlights the importance of bus safety for all road users. Buses are large, heavy vehicles that can’t stop quickly, so it’s the responsibility of all motorists to contribute to bus safety. This year’s theme for Bus Safety Week (22-28 February) was how to stay safe on and around buses to help reduce injuries and fatalities. Check out our bus safety quiz to test your knowledge on being bus aware.

HEAVY VEHICLE AND AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY NEWS Meet Julian, Industry Liaison Officer Q: What’s your background? A: After completing a Heavy Vehicle mechanics trade course I spent many years rebuilding and maintaining vehicles in workshop or maintenance facilities. I then taught at TAFE as a heavy vehicle and plant mechanics teacher, mentoring trade and post trade level technicians. After that I went on to spend many years in the agricultural machinery industry working with customers and engineers to solve technical issues. I brought my skills and experience to the Compliance Inspector role for the last six and a half years based at our office in Wagga Wagga. With Mark Leach taking a much deserved break, I’ve stepped into the Industry Liaison Officer role to continue our partnership with industry. Q: What does your role entail? A: I’m the communication link between industry and Transport for NSW for any relevant matter. I also provide information and education sessions to operators regarding the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and heavy vehicle state laws. Q: What do you see as the upcoming challenges and opportunities in the industry? A: Integration of new safety technologies like electronic work diaries, vehicle on road safety

systems and vehicle telematics for heavy vehicle operation will take some time to adjust to. Ongoing management for industry to maintain compliance with HVNL Certificates of Registrations (CoR) laws and the industry code of practice will also be something to work through this year. I see the opportunities for industry being the incorporation of electric and hydrogen powered heavy vehicles for distribution work, and the continued enhancement of PBS to improve access and productivity.

More flexibility for Higher Mass Limits telematics requirements Previously, all heavy vehicles operating at Higher Mass Limits (HML)) in NSW had to be enrolled in the Intelligent Access Program (IAP). The IAP improves access to NSW roads for very large vehicles and monitors them using satellite based tracking technology.

in the Telematics Monitoring Application (TMA). TMA allows a broader range of monitoring devices with more flexible installation, maintenance and removal procedures. It also produces a different set of data for monitoring, allowing greater insight into road infrastructure.

Following a review, a more flexible approach is available for HML vehicles. HML vehicles now have the option to remain enrolled in the IAP, or enroll
