Plastic Carrier Bags Ban in Kenya DID YOU KNOW Plastic debris caused the death of 1,000,000 sea birds and 100,000 marine animals such as turtles, dolphins and whales every year when they mistake them for food. Plastic bags take about a thousand years to break down and as they break down, they release poisonous materials into the water and soil Plastic bags litter our landscape, fill our streams and find their way to the ocean When burned, plastic bags release toxic fumes that are harmful to people, animals, and the environment

RETAIL PACKAGING

Packaging pointers to help guarantee retail success By Ron Sasine of Retail Packaging Consumer packaged goods companies succeed or fail based on split-second consumer decisions made at thousands of points of sale. Retailers of every stripe and size determine placement, promotion and pricing to meet their customers’ needs for products, Here are six steps brand owners and their packaging suppliers can take to maximize their success at retail: 1. Learn the retail business. While packaging companies correctly focus their efforts on manufacturing efficiency and package performance, they need to begin paying additional attention to the issues that drive retail success. Sell-through, planogram development, seasonality and syndicated data are all topics that retailers deal with on a regular basis but are somewhat foreign to most packaging professionals. Understanding what drives success of consumer products at retail and how that success is measured and rewarded is a critical first step to increasing your company’s value to its supply chain and retail partners.

8

2. Focus on the buyer. Most packaging sales teams have spent years focused on avoiding procurement teams, or at the very least, working around packaging procurement as they sought to build relationships to marketers, fulfillment houses and co-packers. While this strategy may have served them well and may be aligned to the organizational dynamics of industrial companies, retail buyers are not in the same position as industrial procurement teams. 3. Design for the right price point. Retailers focus on delivering their customers the right items at the right prices through the right channels. When packaging companies create packaging options for retailers, they need to keep in mind that the price a consumer will pay for any retail item determines all the key costing variables in the item’s supply chain. 4. Raise the profile of your packaging. Retailers need to set themselves apart from the pack to drive repeat buying trips, and packaging can play a role. Ease of use, performance improvements, distinctive branding—all of these packaging elements

INSIGHT RETAIL #17 NOV 2017 - JAN 2018

can help retailers solidify their share of consumers’ short attention spans. 5. Innovate strategically. Retailers often have innovation priorities that are different than those of their packaging partners. Too many of the key development projects underway in packaging company labs and technical centers are focused on extremely forwardlooking, high-end materials or processing steps. More often than not, retailers are looking for improvements in shelf efficiency, cube utilization and customer ease of use. 6. Help consumers use your product once they get it home. While a great deal of attention is placed— and appropriately so—on the in-store presentation of products, consumer packaged goods companies often neglect the important role that in-home selection plays in driving repeat purchases. The idea is simple: to drive additional product sales, packaging should prompt interest, findability and desire in the cupboard at home as much as it does on the shelf at the store

Retail Packaging Insights

W

Checkpoint boxes clever with solution to keep products safe StrapLok attaches to nylon straps, eliminating false alarms and reducing theft-related shrinkage.

ith the recent ban of polythene bags, the same has come with a blessing to retailers for the huge cost which was going to packaging has now being shifted to shoppers who now carry eco- friendly packaging bags and retailers have also adopted to re-cycle corrugated boxes by giving shoppers to use the same to carry items back to their homes. The cost of carrier bags at the moment is still high on consumers perspective but the same is expected to go low as the supply goes up and we have noted that retailers have diverted the same cost of packaging to their marketing strategies for the latter packaging pages of polythene used to be a marketing tool for retailers. Biodegradable polythene bags are underway as used in other countries and the same can enter Kenyan market may be after a period of time.

heckpoint Systems, a global leading provider of source to shopper solutions to the retail industry, has announced the launch of its innovative StrapLok device that delivers enhanced loss prevention on consumer goods packed in strapped boxes. StrapLok is an innovative antitheft and strong deterrent solution. It quickly attaches onto existing box nylon straps in-store. Rather than relying on a proximity switch – used by other manufacturers – to sense that it is close to the box, it uses innovative, patented technology to actively monitor the tension in straps. The StrapLok is an alternative product to the standard Spiders. It brings to the customer a time-saving solution when strapped boxes are ready in-store. The solution alarms when the straps are cut by dishonest shoppers, while a secondary alarm is activated if the package is removed from the store. Importantly, by constantly monitoring the tension, false alarms triggered by loss of contact with box surface are eliminated – improving the shopping experience. StrapLok’s unique locking mechanism is also capable of tightening loose straps – reducing

the waste created by and the time spent reapplying straps. It can accommodate 6-12mm wide straps, while application and removal are quick and easy. Store staff simply open the device, position the base plate under one or both straps and slot them into the appropriate channels. The housing is then closed and the solution is activated by pushing the locking lever. Irene Fernandez from Checkpoint Systems commented: “Some solutions require retailers to adopt a special strapping methods so that they can be placed near the corner of the product, where there is more tension to force the sensor against the box. StrapLok’s innovative design means it can be attached anywhere on the strap without impacting its performance. It puts the retailer first and represents a huge step forward in the way retailers protect big boxed items, like laptops, printers and kitchen appliances.” For more information visit www.checkpointsystems.com
