Dear Reader,

Welcome to the 11th Edition of the Insight Hotelier Magazine; our quarterly business to business publication distributed for free to hoteliers in major towns of the country and also to members of various hospitality associations in all regions of Kenya.

In this edition, we endeavor to address various topics relating to the industry with the theme Laundry solutions which was aligned to the evolution in laundry and what hoteliers need to take in account to prolong their equipment cum the laundry insight of outsourcing, cleaning amongst others from the IPSO brand by Uni-Industries East Africa Limited.

The Insight Hospitality Conference and Expo will continue to reach out to the remaining regions for Eastern Region in Meru and Coastal Region at Mombasa and we look forward for the other regions not covered due to political and economic situations to be covered in quarter one of 2018, that is Western & Nyanza Region and Nairobi Region, thereafter the calendar of events 2018 will follow over the other regions as per our reach out programme to hoteliers on a one-to-one platform with owners of hotels, restaurants, resorts & camps with an aim of creating an industry network points for both hoteliers and suppliers to share experience and best practices for the betterment of the industry.

The above reach out have not been a success without our partners - suppliers, associations and government stakeholder institutions and not forgetting our host hotels for we do appreciate all of them for their support so far which has enabled us to run the 2nd editions this year for the regions already covered and we encourage esteemed suppliers, industry players and stakeholders to continue using our platforms of the Insight the Hospitality Expo to showcase their products and services as a way of reaching out to their target clientele.

We do urge Hoteliers also to subscribe to the magazine so as to get direct delivery to their hotels as well as they get listed on the hotelier magazine at every edition cum invitations to attend our events with no extra costs and also enjoy free entrance for two delegates to our regional and national Insight Hospitality conferences and expo.

Even though overloading is a common problem in hotel laundry facilities, it doesn’t mean that hotels can afford to not load as much laundry as possible into each machine to maximize profitability and efficiency.

Typically, hotel employees will load laundry into a cart or trolley and place it on a scale. The platform scale then is able to weigh the amount of the load, subtracting out the weight of the cart. This weight reading helps laundry personnel determine if they’re at risk for overloading a certain machine.

enya Coast Tourist Association is the coast tourism and business umbrella body and private sector voice of authority. Our memberships include travel agents, tour operators, airlines, hotels, restaurants and allied businesses. KCTA has over the years advocated for a conducive and favorable business environment. Our advocacy activities have consistently bore many fruits from creation of TPU, driving of major industry policies as well as Governors roundtable culminating into creation county business agenda among others.

Our Second workshop was held at the Jacaranda on Friday 24th November 2017.Jacaranda hotel is important to HHPA because the association was born during our tea together at the same Hotel in 2015.

I am proud to inform all that this event was fully sponsored by Odex Chemicals LTD. On behalf of the entire HHPA members, I wish thank this Company for standing with HHPA always. We had a similar gesture from the same Company during our launch together with other Companies not mentioned here.

Our workshops are held so that members can learn new ideas, new ways of working, new innovations and technological advancement. During the last workshop, we had lined a few areas to tackle as follows: • Laundry and Housekeeping solutions-Odex Chemicals • Interior Designs-Savanna Interiors • Hotel Safety and Hygiene-Mr. Evans Mutuva • Laundry services –Pink Elephant • Housekeeping and Laundry budgets-TBA It was great to see members interact, learn and show commitment to embrace new ideas. Odex company and all the other Companies showcased all that they have for Hotel and Institutional Housekeeping and Laundry services.

Currently KCTA has entered into partnership with KTB to develop a state of the art tourist information center at KCTA building. This tourist information center will indeed provide great marketing opportunity and a big boost to destination Kenya coast and the whole tourism fraternity.

KCTA has been housing a tourist information center for more than three decades, visitors walk in for information regarding tourists site, events, accommodation in the region and beyond. Some also seek for information regarding investment opportunities and formalities required for that case.

A modern tourist center will replace the traditional tourist information bureau at KCTA building. The center featuring state-ofthe-art information technology will provide visitors, stakeholders and even, students and all travellers touristic information they need not just for kenya coast but also destination Kenya. It will indeed serve the traveling public well by offering a brief respite to travelers.

The tourist information center located along Moi Avenue just next to iconic elephant tusk will open up the entire Kenya coast counties.

Most travellers seek a lot of touristic information from the sandy beaches of Lamu, wildlife safaris in Tiata Taveta, historical and cultural diversity and excursions in Mombasaa, adorable Watamu Malindi and entire Kilifi, the birdlife of Tana River and the breathtaking Lamu and beyond. This is one of the best initiatives that will support tourism in the entire coast counties.

Other than serving as a tourist information center , the beaurue will be one stop shop where the general public can also get information regarding investments, business licensing among many more .This is an initiative that we truly have to be proud of as tourism and business stakeholders in the coast region. It will officially open in November 2017.

Currently we have 4 key things to tackle as a matter of priority in 2018 1. Tourism Regulatory Authority compliance. A team of 6 professionals are already working on this.

2. More members recruitment, we are targeting 150 professionals 3. HHPA Mombasa Chapter Launch-cum-workshop 4. CLEANERS EXPO, the first of its kind in Kenya I am therefore appealing to Hotel Owners, Hotel General Managers and other Institutions that value housekeeping services to support this young Association

The Kenyan market is seasonal and competitive. Hotels are always trying to offer more value for less money.

And the trend that this has created is a greater online presence. I see many hotels actively managing their prices on our platform. They aggressively engage the team, request advice on effective practices and offer special discounts.

Out of the 21 countries our EA team works with, Kenya has the highest users (hotel managers) of our mobile and web extra net. Managers know online is where the future is and Jumia Travel is helping them grow their presence daily.

For a long time now, the basic principle of consuming lots of hot water and detergent coupled with applying rough agitation to remove stains has been the way that things get done in the laundry.

In that time, there have been some marginal improvements to the technology behind the washing machine, but the basic principles have remained the same from time to time.

But there is now a more cost-effective and ecofriendly way to get your hotel’s linens cleaner than ever before and some of the factors which one can use to achieve this is using the right detergent to wash the right linens with the availability of either Cold or warm waters or soft or hard waters and be able to remove greases, oil stains, eliminates static cling, reduces formula times, or extends linen life.

Keep linens looking like new by extending Garments Life span One of the largest costs associated with any hospitality’s laundry is the constant need to replace linens and towels. Traditional washing machines wear out fabrics over time as hot water, copious chemicals, and rough mechanical action stress the material.

This is achieved by using the right detergent to clean fabrics of different types and removal of stain would be at ease with less wear and tear on fabrics from the wash cycle, which makes fabrics of all kinds last longer Detergents: Liquid or Powder?

The new washing machines like wash extractors have intelligent systems which are fully programmed and can take care of any parameters in washing. Hence, launderers are very careful of EH&S (environment, health & safety) in their facilities and by moving to liquid detergents, which can be dosed through a pre-programmed dispensers, they are able to meet the standards. Also, there is a rise in the need to move away from manual handling of chemicals which is not in the case with powders.

The liquid detergent is as effective as the powder detergent. What makes liquid popular is the ease of operation and improvement in productivity with the automated dosing system. Powder is manually dosed and is susceptible to error, leading to inconsistent results whereas liquid is automated and more reliable. The dosages of the liquid detergents are controlled and are not subject to human intervention. This brings in consistent cleaning performance to the linen day in and out.

In fact, the cost of liquid detergent is higher compared to powder. But, if you look at the productivity and consistent wash results, the liquid detergent is cost effective and with the awareness about the liquid system increasing, more and more customers are shifting to liquid laundries.

Even though theoretically liquids tend to mix faster compared to powder, there is no definite conclusion to state that there is any cause and effect of them in the laundry. In fact, the powder systems also mix easily with each other in the wash process, as water is always present to facilitate mixing. While the detergent does not differ for the different types of linen in each of these sectors that is 5 star/4 star hotels, hospitals commercial laundries and other institutional customers, the dosage changes as per the soil type. For e.g. there is a sanitizer required additionally for healthcare linen which is not a standard practice for hotels and other institutions.

It’s basically the customer’s choice between liquid and powder detergents, as both have their own features and limitations. As far as product stability is concerned, powder detergent may become lumps or cakey when stored in high humid area due to its hygroscopic nature. Liquid detergents may solidify or separate out as they are temperature sensible but actually, both powder and liquid detergents contain several ingredients such as builder, anti re-deposition agent, water conditioning agent, corrosion inhibitor, opacifiers, fabric softening agent, fragrance, digester and enzymes. Liquid detergents are designed scientifically to give synergistic effects, nourish and enhance the

look of the fabric, give bouncy or body fills and to increase fabric life. Liquid detergents are not necessarily effective in all cases but they work better on typical stains and do not harshly affect the fabric if designed with balanced surfactants.

In Most institutional, hotel and hospital linen gets heavily soiled and the sophisticated liquid detergent may not provide excellent results.

Liquid detergents may not seem cost effective due to various factors. It may require repeated washing with heavy soils. Further, if the liquid detergent contains high amount of water, obviously the dosage would be higher.

The packaging material cost (such as HDPE jar) and the high price of surfactants also influence the overall cost of liquid detergents. But, on the other hand, product wastage is minimal with liquid detergent applications and it is a value addition to the fabric. Thus, liquid detergent may be cost effective. Good liquid detergents are phosphate free and do not contain major inorganic constituents. With better foam and better results, it is recommended for soft & premium fabrics and for those that are not colour fast.

Sometimes powder detergents may leave residue on the clothes, which can be avoided using liquid detergents with a proper dosing system. The newly developed professional laundry machines have inbuilt design of dosing system which makes things easier. Dosage depends on laundry cycle, usage of additional booster, softeners, biocides, whitener, bleaches and neutralizers. The quantity would differ considering soil type, water quality and linen type. Generally, blood stains are a big

detergents for Hotels issue in the healthcare industry, while tea, coffee and sauces stains are common in the hospitality industry. Similarly, oil & grease stains are common in industrial uniform linen.

Good powder detergents are 100% water soluble and a proper mixture of powder & water can be handled similarly like the liquid detergent. Some are mixed in a specifically designed machine, while others are mixed at the point of use. Nonetheless, the penetration of liquid detergent is naturally good compared to powder detergent. Indian customers demand result oriented products at minimum cost.

They analyse and evaluate the pros and cons keeping in mind the operating cost and then match the specification with their own available resources. Liquid detergent will take time to become popular considering the Indian environment, available water quality and product cost.

We have just started our product line for laundry and are supplying to segments such as hospitality, institutes, healthcare, food & beverages and private professional laundry besides serving textile auxiliaries and textiles industries (mainly surfactants which are being used while manufacturing – processing of main fibre, cotton and their blends).

Although powder detergents are most commonly used because of their stability, eco-feasibility and long lasting properties, they have a tendency to cake up on clothes if used in excess. Detergent cakes on clothes will require another complete rinse cycle involving use more electricity and water.

chemicals with liquid detergent becomes much easier as it is aqueous based. Detergent will differ with respect to substrates which are to be washed rather than the place where it has to be used like hospital or laundry.

Major categories of liquid detergents in laundry washing are: 1) Light duty laundry liquid detergents: They are used for washing delicate fabrics, like wool, silk, and synthetics. It is important to note that that light duty liquid detergents easily disperse in water and are mild and gentle to hands and the fabric being washed.

The pH is neutral or very slightly alkaline.

2) Heavy-duty laundry liquid detergents: These are distinctive because of their relatively high surfactant level, sometimes even up to 40%. Heavy-duty liquid detergents are effective in removing grease and greasy soil at wash temperatures below 60°C at much lower dosage levels. The cleaning ability naturally depends on the water hardness and the amount of the soil in the substrate.

Both liquids as well as powders have their importance in their own place. The advent of liquid detergent concentrates, which now dominate the market, seems like an improvement allowing for less liquid per load and more loads per bottle. However, consumers haven’t yet adapted to the change and think they need more than the recommended amount for each load. A recent Consumer Reports analysis has found that people tend to use far more liquid per load than they need to.

Some powders do not dissolve properly unless it is mixed in warm water, thus increasing heating costs while Liquid detergents dissolve better, reducing water temperature worries or soap cake lumps on clothes. Liquids are especially effective on food & greasy soils and in pre-treating spots and stains prior to washing. Powder detergents are mostly highly alkaline in nature and with prolonged washing will lead to cloth harshness and strength loss.

Also handling of alkaline detergents may cause skin irritation.

Both liquid and dry laundry detergent clean well, but many cleaners think liquids tend to work better on grease and food stains, while powders are better on tough soil and dirt.

Laundry Evolution 1. EVOLUTION OF LAUNDRY The commercial washing machine has undergone a gradual evolution. Most of the changes are under the skin, so they are not obvious, but the result is a far more reliable and flexible tool.

The introduction of the high-spin washerextractor (Soft Mount) ,which offers a more energy efficient alternative to the rigid-drum type (Hard mount) ,is the first major laundry evolution in the past decade. The rigid-drum machines are cheaper to manufacture but very labor intensive with the laundry process usually involving a separate Tumble dryer to further reduce residual moisture content for drying.

Further to this, the old / normal Hard mount machines do not have springs or shock absorbers. The machine is bolted to the concrete floor. In some cases it is bolted to a concrete or steel slab, which is then bolted to the floor.

They can’t be used on hardwood floors or in basements unless there is steel or concrete placed underneath it because the foundation needs to be fortified which makes it very expensive in terms of installation. The new Soft mount machines are easy to install and do not require a concrete or steel slab.

Event Calendar 2018 Insight Hospitality East Africa will be running the 3rd Edition of hotelier’s conference and Expo this year as a B2B Model of reaching out to the hospitality Industry as part of enhancing our reach out programme to the industry apart from the publication – Hotelier magazine which is a quarterly B2B magazine for the hospitality industry and beyond.

Our main objective is to creating a platform of sharing with hoteliers the new trends, technological changes, training solutions as the supplier get to network and offer solutions to the industry based on the new developments in the industry among others with the support of industry stakeholder.

Who should attend: Hotel owners, Managers, Head of Departments / supervisors from hospitality sector covering all classes of Hotels, Camps, Lodges, and Resorts within the cluster regions as below.

Duration of the event: All our 2018 events will be a 2 day event per region which will include short seminars cum conference sessions, Exhibitions by solution providers and exceptional cases studies by solution providers.
