et’s breathe deeply while closing our eyes and imagining craving our most favorite fruit! Think about how good and pleasing it is to us! I know we imagine it to be fresh and satisfying! Let’s keep this image in our mind as we continue to read this article.

I’d like to use the familiar parable of Luke 13: 6-9 in order for us to get an understanding of barrenness: “Then he told this parable: A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, for three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil? Sir, the man replied, leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.”

When something is barren, it is empty, unyielding, unfruitful, unsuccessful, and useless. Spiritual barrenness is of no value and insignificant. We clearly see that the man was instructed to cut down the fig tree if it didn’t yield anything! What do

we need to cut down because it hasn’t produced any good fruit? Think about those things that have lingered for years and haven’t produced any good. I’m talking about those things that we’ve pacified, nurtured, and fertilized and still nothing. What habits and issues need to be uprooted in order for us to bear bountiful spiritual fruit?

Spiritual barrenness can hold up our blessings and heart’s desires. It can also cause us to become stagnant in an unfruitful place in our lives. I’ve come to challenge us all to examine where we are in God. Now those of us that like to garden will understand these next statements. Like gardening, let’s identify our needs of uprooting our spiritual barrenness and pick the best soil consistency. Like the described parable, we have to make sure that we have the right soil. Jesus and His character of love and goodness are the most essential values that we need to be successful and to bear bountiful spiritual fruit. Always remember that God desires to take us from spiritual barrenness to fruitfulness.

What Does it Really Cost to Buy a Home?

ave you decided that you want to be a homeowner?

Are you tired of making rent payments every month that are not even showing on your credit report? If the answer is yes, you are not alone!

According to iPropertyManagement, approximately 65% of the nation’s population are homeowners, which leaves the other 35% as renters. This figure has been steady since last year and continues as of the first quarter of 2023.

When it comes to buying a home, there are many costs that homebuyers don’t expect until they are already in the process. It is imperative that you work with a realtor that will educate you about the process and costs associated with buying a home before you fall in love with one.

CREDIT REPORT: Your lender will charge you a fee to pull your credit report from all three credit bureaus. Fees can range from $50-200 depending on the lender. This cost is usually paid out of pocket when you first begin the process of getting pre-approved for a mortgage.

APPLICATION FEE: Your lender may charge an application fee for doing your loan. This amount will vary, depending on certain factors such as the lender and type of home and loan that you are doing.

PURCHASE PRICE: The agreed upon amount that you will pay for the home, under a signed contract.

DOWN PAYMENT: This is usually a percentage of the purchase price. It can range from 3-20% or higher, if the buyer chooses. Many buyers opt to pay 20% upfront to avoid paying Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI), which costs buyers several hundred dollars per month in your mortgage payment. PMI protects the lender – NOT YOU - in the event

that you stop making payments on your loan. The down payment should not be confused with closing costs, those are two separate things!

DUE DILIGENCE/EARNEST MONEY DEPOSIT: Vary from state to state. These items are usually negotiable with your offer to purchase. For North Carolina, the combination of these two fees may add up to about 1% of the purchase price and are paid with your offer to purchase a home.

APPRAISAL FEE: The bank will require an appraisal of the property to determine the value. They normally will not lend over the appraisal value, but there are some exceptions.

You may pay for the appraisal out of pocket, before closing. Charges vary, but will cost you a few hundred dollars.

HOME INSPECTION FEE: It is highly recommended that you hire a qualified professional to inspect your home prior to closing, even on new construction. They will provide a detailed report of the condition of your home and suggest repairs and other items that may need attention. This cost will also vary, depending on certain factors such as the size of the home. Inspection charges start around $400.

Finance POINTS: Due to higher interest rates, a buyer may choose to buy down the interest rate on their loan so that they can enjoy a lower monthly payment. Each point costs you 1% of the loan amount. For example, if you buy a $300,000 home, one point would cost you $3,000. These points are not paid prior to closing, but you will see the figures on the closing settlement sheet to be paid at the closing table.

CLOSING COSTS: These fees are a separate cost associated with the transfer of ownership during the home buying process.

There are several things that are factored into your closing costs. Lender fees, government fees, taxes, insurance, title search, transfer fees, escrow fees and other third-party fees may fall into this category.

Closing costs vary per transaction, averaging between three to six percent of the mortgage.

It is important to have a trusted professional that can explain the process and fees associated with buying a home. They will be helpful in navigating the steps and may be a resource to help you find ways to save money.

You don’t need to wait for the holidays to roll around before you start putting money away. Many banks and credit unions, as well as some employers, offer the opportunity for you to set up a holiday savings account (which may also be called a Christmas club account).

Some people are hard to shop for.

Others are deserving of a gift that’s grandiose and expensive. However, buying an expensive gift may exceed your allotted spending limit. Depending on the recipient, team up with your siblings, friends, or co-workers to each contribute toward the purchase price of an expensive gift.

At the start of 2021, 34% of Americans reported having a side hustle of some kind, with another 24% planning to start one by the end of the year. 46% of individuals with a side hustle claimed they were motivated to start one by the prospect of generating passive income.

2. Make travel plans in advance The holiday season in America encompasses Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Day. This year, upwards of 53.4 million people are expected to travel during the Thanksgiving holiday, eager to see relatives, dive into some delicious food, and enjoy good company.

3. Set limits for gifts It’s easy to get carried away with gift-giving, especially with those closest to you or who need an extra boost of holiday cheer. At the same time, it’s important you don’t allow your generosity to send you into debt.

4. Use credit cards wisely Credit cards can be a helpful tool for building credit, but they may also offer the opportunity of blowing up your careful budgeting. 40.7% of Americans with credit cards carry a balance from month-tomonth, which means they’ve incurred debt and are on the hook for paying interest each month.

5. Take advantage of seasonal sales The National Retail Federation expects Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and other holiday events to account for $843.4 billion and $859 billion in sales. Though there are plenty of reasons to avoid these massive sales, you may score some great deals — and save money — by contending with the crowds or crashing, laggy online stores.

7. Organize a gift exchange Holding a gift exchange, such as a Secret Santa at your holiday party or potluck is a great way to spend time with friends, family, and co-workers. It’s also an effective way of ensuring everyone who participates gets a gift without exceeding their holiday budget to give gifts to others.

8. Take the DIY route Some of the most thoughtful presents are handmade. DIY gifts are often cherished for their uniqueness and serve as a representation of all the hard work, time, and care that went into crafting them.

Side hustles — which can include anything from rideshare driving to selling handmade crafts on Etsy — can help you supplement your income. This extra cash may then be put toward paying down your debt, building your savings, or making sure your house has the best holiday decorations in the neighborhood.

Set a Budget for the Holidays… and Stick With It It’s on you to stick to your holiday budget.

By doing so, you may prevent excess holiday spending, avoid taking on holiday debt, and more easily reach your financial goals — which, in many ways, is a gift to yourself.

9. Slash your expenses Reducing your monthly expenses can help you save money and increase how much money is allotted to each of your budget categories. In fact, putting a budget together in and of itself is one of the first steps you can take to lower your expenses.

Part of creating a budget involves listing your expenses, such as your mortgage or rent, car payment, and utilities. You should also include other expenses in that list, such as your gym membership, streaming subscriptions, and other costs.

INSIGHTS FROM DR. WANDA V. JONES AND THE INAUGURATION OF A.S.P.E.N. INC. REVOLUTIONIZING HEALTHCARE SOLUTIONS.

ental health is something we cannot ignore. According to Nest Step Solutions, 5.44% of adults experience severe mental illness and over 12.1 million adults have reported serious thoughts of suicide. When thinking about mental health and how to stay serene in turbulent times, we must be aware of resources available to us individually and collectively as a community. Recently, I had the pleasure to attend the grand opening of A.S.P.E.N, in Gastonia, NC, and speak with the Founder, Dr. Wanda V. Jones.

In 2001 after surviving the World Trade Center disaster, Dr. Jones reevaluated her life and decided to make a career change.

After researching many social issues in society, her deep desire to own and operate her own emergency shelter and transitional housing led her to sell her 4-family home and use the proceeds for the start-up.

Being a woman herself of many hardships she has learned the vital keys to being successful. Having a mother with strong values, she was always taught how to rise above any circumstances she was faced with.

Not only is she a woman of relentless faith, Dr. Wanda V. Jones also holds a Doctoral Degree in Sacred Theology and she also

holds a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Work) from Yeshiva University in New York. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, specializing in Cognitive Behavior Therapy and an Approved/Certified Domestic Violence Counselor. In 2015 Dr. Jones also received her Chaplaincy certification from New York State. In addition, she is also a Notary and Licensed Process Server.

In having the time to speak with her I learned that her life has been dedicated to helping others to rebuild their lives! Dr. Jones works closely with the community clergy, social service agencies, house of worship and families to provide services to individuals seeking to move themselves out of danger and back into a life of independence and solitude.

Dr. Jones, congrats on the grand opening of A.S.P.E.N. Tell us what A.S.P.E.N means and what type services will A.S.P.E.N provide to the community of Gastonia, NC and beyond?

Dr. Jones: ASPEN which means, A Safe Place Empowerment Network, is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create a safe place for individuals and families dealing with Mental Health and Substance Use. We do this by providing a judgment and barrier free environment which will help them evolve and become their true authentic self. We strive to help people put their pieces back together. Our vision is to improve the lives of those living with mental illness and provide emotional wellness for individuals and families as we strive to deliver services and support necessary to improve the quality of life of those dealing with mental illness and substance use disorders. We will assist clients by providing Case Management along with resources to those living with Substance Use and Mental Health .

Dr. Jones not only do you have a plethora of experience in this field, but you are also an author. Tell us more about that.

Dr. Jones: Yes, I am a bestselling author of the popular book “Decisions, Decisions, Decisions” and currently host a show on BRIC TV titled Decisions.

On this show I have a panel of guests talking about many life decisions.

Dr. Jones, what are one of your favorite quotes?

Dr. Jones: I live my life by this quote by the late Dr. Maya Angelo, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Candy Apple Wings Recipe Courtesy of Chef Jernard’s “Southern Inspired My American Table” cookbook

Ingredients: Candy Apple Sauce 1⁄4 cup packed dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 cup apple whiskey 1 cup your favorite hot sauce 1⁄2 cup cherry cola 1⁄4 cup grenadine 1 tablespoon honey Vegetable oil, for frying Kosher salt Cracked black pepper 2 pounds chicken wings, separated into drumettes and flats (wing tips discarded) Blue cheese crumbles, for garnishexperience, Pete allows his audience to truly understand the essence of South Asian cuisine and its cultural significance.

Preparation: 1. In a small pot or skillet, combine all the ingredients for the candy apple sauce. Stir the ingredients together over medium-low heat and bring to a simmer. Cook until the sauce thickens, 10–15 minutes. Remove the sauce from the heat.

2. Pour oil into a large Dutch oven or heavybottomed pot to no more than halfway up the side. Prop or clip in a deep-fry thermometer so that the bulb is submerged in the oil. Heat over medium-high heat until the thermometer registers 350 degrees F. (Alternatively, you can use a deep fryer or air fryer.) Line a platter with paper towels (or set a rack in a rimmed baking sheet).

3. Season the wings with salt and pepper. Working in batches to not crowd the pot, gently drop the wings into the hot oil. Fry until the wings are golden brown and cooked through, 10–15 minutes. Transfer to the paper towels or rack.

4. Pour some of the sauce into a large bowl and toss with some of the wings until they are evenly coated. Working in batches makes it easier to coat them evenly. As a general rule, toss about 10 wings per 3⁄4 cup sauce.

5. Arrange the coated wings on a platter and garnish with blue cheese crumbles.

unes that cater to the soul are served on a platter when putting on a record by Leela James. The R&B and Soul songstress has made her mark on a male-dominated industry over the course of 20 years! She is the voice behind wedding classic, “Fall For You” and has lived up to the ‘Godfather of Soul’ James Brown’s title, “Goddaughter” of Soul’. After her fruitful career in the ‘90’s, she is excited to bounce back into the limelight with new hit “Right Back In It”. Insight Magazine was lucky enough to get an interview with the stunning star. In it, she talks about her contributions to HBCU students, the thoughtprocess behind her new single, and her take on making for the long term in this business.

The inspiration behind “Right Back in it” was getting into the groove of life whether there are highs or lows.

It is a theme that people around the globe can relate to. The video for the single was inspired by gritty dramatic film “Queen and Slim”. Specifically, it reflected on how the two stuck with one another through thick and thin. It is a metaphor for the challenges we often face and the tenacity we must possess to get over each hurdle.

Being in the company of other major stars such as James Brown, who she opened and toured for, molded the professionalism she exudes to this day. Experiencing an entertaining

yet tightly run show gave James the motivation to hold herself to the same standard. Leela has graced the stage of well-known crooners such as Anthony Hamiliton, Tank, and Maxwell. Her peers provided great examples, Leela proudly learning from each and every one of them.

James wanted to get involved with assisting less fortunate young Black women so she began working for the betterment of women in HBCU. She feels there is a sense of community where they can lean on one another and build a life they can be proud of.

She is happy to use her expertise and personal experience to help them navigate their way to the next journey. James feels that being in college is quite formative to figuring out the rest of your life, so she lives to pay it forward.

Leela would advise those who are looking to become a singer to understand that the business is not for the weak so they must have thick skin. They must know who they are as an artist so they can stay on track of their goals.

Having a career that spans over decades is tough work but if you have the motivation to go the distance, it can be done. Finally, she states to perfect your craft and perform as the best version of who you are because there is no one

who is like you.

In 2022, James’s long-loved single “Fall For You” was turned to certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Obtaining the accomplishment was like a breath of fresh air to James when she absorbed the competitive nature that R&B/ Soul has had to offer. Getting an official acknowledgement by an esteemed organization gave James the validation that her efforts were not in vain.

The designated songstress over multiple generations has enjoyed performing during her “Right Back In It” tour in Augusta, GA and over the pond in the Netherlands, Sweden, and France. Though she is globally known, James finds her fondest audience here in North America. She has stated that she’s very excited about attending the Warner Theater in Washington D.C. because she has experienced pure love from the fans.

Remembering the Blessings of God: The Key to Abundant Faith and Hope

et’s talk about remembering the blessings of God! One of the greatest ways to remember the blessings of God is to think of his goodness! The goodness of God is one of the attributes of God, as well as a description of His very essence.

God, by nature, is absolutely good as Psalm 34:8 tells us: “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” God is the definition and foundation of the term good! We inherit goodness that comes from God! God’s goodness and blessings cause us to have faith in him! Romans chapter 15, verse 13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

God is good and when we find ourselves in a bind or trial, he expects us to remember his goodness in times past. He expects us to remember how he is always present in every situation that we experience. We can be more aware of God’s goodness when we choose to focus on his love, joy, peace, promises and the gifts he’s placed within us!

One of the greatest gifts that God has blessed us with is the gift of his Holy Spirit! This is an essential gift because the Holy Spirit leads, guides, corrects, strengthens and empowers us when we need it most and when we take the

time to willingly ask him for what we need!

When we tend to face life’s daily challenges, it’s easy to get distracted and discombobulated. But we must reel ourselves in and focus on the goodness of God and the many blessings that he’s already blessed us with, in addition to the many blessings that he has in store for us! That’s right, we must be in expectation of God’s blessings!

The Message Bible Version of Matthew chapter 6, verses 30-34 says, “If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving.

People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

From these verses, I want to point out that we can remember the blessings

of God when we live and function in his Kingdom, that is, God’s reality! His reality is not the reality of this world.

It’s vital for us to focus on what is the reality in Heaven (God’s world). He wants that reality here on earth. He teaches us to pray “your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”.

We can remember God’s blessings by knowing in our hearts that everything begins with God! The Amplified version of John 1:1 says, “the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.”

We need to work on getting to that place where everything in our life and our world starts with Him! There is no success without Him. In conclusion, I’d like to encourage everyone to remember the blessings of God! Remember his faithfulness and goodness towards you daily! I love how prophet Jeremiah wrote in Lamentations chapter 3, verses 21-26: “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning, GREAT is your faithfulness! I say to myself, the Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” The Lord is GOOD to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” Amen!

Indie Night Film Festival Tour

he Indie Night Film Festival, founded by entrepreneur and film industry veteran Dave Brown, has become a significant platform for filmmakers to showcase their work and network with industry professionals. The festival started as a weekly event in Hollywood, California, but it has now embarked on a city-to-city tour, with Atlanta being its first stop.

Dave Brown, who is also on the executive management team of renowned actor Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx has taken inspiration from shows like "American Idol" and aims to create a similar platform for films. By touring different cities such as Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia and many more the festival provides opportunities for talented filmmakers and college students who may not have access to Hollywood's film industry.

During the festival's inaugural city-to-city tour, held at the historic Plaza Theatre in Atlanta, several actors were in attendance such as Terri Vaughn, Clifton Powell, DJ Drama, Dave Brown and Morris Chestnut Jill Marie Jones, award-winning icon Clifton Powell, actor-singer , former BET news anchor Ed Gordon, GUY singer Damion Hall, Fast & Furious actor and filmmaker Roberto Sanchez, and over emphasized the importance of having a plan and establishing oneself in the film industry. Brown, who studied film at Morehouse College, understands that simply arriving in Hollywood is not enough to succeed. It requires being part of the community and showcasing one's talent and work.

Brown emphasized the word “ No” means "Next Opportunity” and advises aspiring filmmakers and actors to stay consistent in their efforts and continue pursuing their dreams, even when faced with setbacks.

Growing up in Gainesville, FL, Curtis enjoyed running track and playing football but he always had an eye and a heart for photography. While at the time the dream seemed unreachable, it never strayed too far from his mind.

After retiring from the Army in 2005, his passion for photography really began to take form after the passing of his mother. "We did not have any pictures of her," he told me, "and I did not want other families to have that happen to them." And while that may have been what ignited his career, Curtis has definitely made a name for himself in the world of photography. He continues to tell beautiful stories through the images he captures.

To date Curtis has an impressive list of accomplishments to put on his resume. He has attended numerous fashion shows and sporting events.
