Welcome to the 2022 edition of Inside Track Motorsport News’ Canadian Racing Guide schedule issue. This issue is one of the year’s most anticipated editions of Canada’s only national motorsports publication. Every year, whether it’s at preseason events like the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo, or calls or emails from our loyal subscribers, this is the issue I get asked about the most.
And with pandemic restrictions lifted – and racing schedules getting back to normal – the 2022 Canadian Racing Guide will once again provide an invaluable resource to Canadian racing fans deciding on which events, and when, to attend after two long years of re-scheduling, cancellations and closures.
For tracks that have supported the Canadian Racing Guide with ads, we’ve included – in large, red, bold letters – the words “see their ad on page…” in the heart of their schedules. Please check out these ads as they usually include more detailed information about the series’ or facilities’ big events, and weekly show highlights.
We’ve also run full schedules for tracks whose promoters expressed an interest in having them appear in this issue. Together with Inside Track Motorsports News, these promoters make the Canadian Racing Guide possible, and we ask you to consider their facilities and series when making your plans.
Looking at the schedules, please note that where there are multiday events, in several instances only the first day appears in the schedule. For example, the Friday date of a three-day racing weekend might be the only one listed. Also, things change, so if you are planning to attend a race, please call the track or series and check their website first, before heading out.

Something a little less technical this issue because the last few weeks have been full of amazing experiences and encounters that are most definitely worth sharing. In addition to the fact that I am rapidly running out of technical stuff to explain, this being my 60th article for this fine periodical and my knowledge is finite and now actually shrinking with age. The tipping point that convinced me to disclose a few of these recent episodes was a dinner in Birmingham (the suburb of Detroit, MI, not the cities of the United Kingdom or Alabama) with two absolute legends of the motor racing engine world. Please remember, those of you that have been reading my shit for a while, that I am a chassis man through and through and only write about engine stuff when it encroaches into my world (usually in a bad way). I will start with the dinner but will also cover some other cool stuff like my weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and some less than stellar items like our result at Le Mans. But first to the dinner. I was recently in Detroit, MI for a whirlwind two days of meetings with customers and to visit Multimatic’s Sales and Technical Centre in Novi (home of our VI-grade DiM250 driving simulator; “The Big ‘Un”) and took the opportunity to meet up with Roger Bailey for dinner. Roger has been a close friend for many years and his biography was recently released, deemed to be a reason to celebrate. Written by Gordon Kirby (a fellow English-born Canadian and the king of the motor racing biography genre) and aptly entitled Boost (Roger’s nickname), it is filled with the amazing stories of the man who, among other things, was the first English

race mechanic at Ferrari, becoming a favourite of ‘il Commendatore’ Enzo Ferrari himself. Roger has lived in Detroit since he was sent from his native England, by Bruce McLaren, to run the team’s North American engine shop on Eight Mile Road at the dawn of the 1970s. Roger and I have had some rollicking good times (usually aided and abetted by Multimatic’s own Olympic level storyteller, Stephen Charsley, who goes way, way back with ‘Boost’), done some good business (his son Julian runs a top draw composite shop in Indy) and traded stories until I ran out of steam…Roger never runs out of steam! Despite probably knowing every single tale in it, I have just purchased the book, for no better reason than to have it all properly collated and clearly communicated by Gordon. But to completely blow my “in the company of greatness fuse” Roger brought Gary Knutson along, as he also lives in Detroit for the same reason as ‘Boost,’ having come to work in the McLaren engine shop, ending up married to a local girl. Gary couldn’t be any more different than Roger, being a quiet, humble guy who I thoroughly enjoyed prying his history and technical experiences out of over a great steak and quite a bit of red wine. Gary hails from Colorado Springs and stumbled into motorsport from his obsession of tinkering with anything that had an associated internal combustion engine when he was a kid. The turning point (that moment from which none of us ever return) was when Chuck Hall (Jim’s brother, of Chapparal fame) had Gary prepare his Corvette for Pikes Peak in 1958 (it finished third). At that point, he was fully hooked and spent every penny that he and his buddy, Jerry

Mallett, had to buy and campaign a Coventry-Climax powered Lotus 11 that they purchased from Jim. Long story short, Gary ended up in Midland, TX during the most innovative times, starting on the build of the Can-Am Chaparral 2(A) which he refers to as the ‘Plastic Car’ (it utilized a fiberglass monocoque, later Series 2 cars adopting a more conventional aluminum construction). Despite the history books and blogs stating that Gary moved to Midland to be the engine guy, he tells me that this was not so, everybody did everything back in those early days, including him. The evening was not long enough to hit even just the highlights, but I would suggest that Mr. Kirby should give Gary a call, although he’s the kind of guy that doesn’t brag about anything and only rises to a question if there is true enthusiasm in the query (and an inaccuracy that he feels obligated to correct).
One of the gems he threw out was when I asked about the 2J, a hot topic considering the recent achievement of the McMurtry Spéirling at Goodwood (a little more on this car later). The inaccuracy that kicked it off was when I incorrectly stated that it used a Kohler snowmobile engine to run the suction fans that created the massive downforce of the amazingly innovative car. He pointed out that it was a Rockwell JLO two-cylinder, two-stroke (I had all the details correct except for the manufacturer), and then went on to describe the massive unforeseen challenge that it presented them. Because this “second” engine was located within the “low pressure” area of the car and it was initially fed by the standard carburetors, it wouldn’t run worth a shit when the “suction” was enabled. Gary’s solution was to install Lucas fuel injection so that he could simply tune the A/F ratio by reprofiling the metering pump cam (for more on that magic, see my description in my ITMN 19.07 article, entitled Memories). This immediately solved the issue and the “vacuum cleaner car” (my description of it when I was a kid) came to life, but unfortunately never for a race distance (another story for another day). Lucas was adamant that it wouldn’t work on such a small engine, but they also told him their hardware would never be able to be adapted to the early Chevy V8s being used in Can-Am, but he was the father of that installation, and it was utilized by everybody once he got it to work. A true legend of engine innovation.
As we got to the main course the topic became the big Chevy aluminum block motors that displaced (pun intended) the production iron small blocks that were used up until 1966, which sported Gary’s chosen Lucas fuel injection metering unit, TRACO throttle bodies on Mickey Thompson magnesium intake manifolds and Vertex magnetos which combined to add both power and improved driveablity to the 350 cubic-inch V8s, which also sported his own four-bolt main caps. The outcome of that initial Knutson upgrade to 550 hp (dyno development being undertaken at TRACO in California as the team did not have such a facility in England at that time) was Bruce McLaren’s first Can-Am championship, with five wins from six races in 1967. Gary’s ability to take the best technology from a load of different places and combine them into an innovative combination spoke for itself at that point.
But the best was yet to come, as we all ordered coffee and
listened to some Roger Bailey stories, which are also incredibly entertaining, especially those from back in his early days at Cooper where he was Jackie Stewart’s mechanic when they won the British Formula 3 championship (I assume some of this will be in the book, but not all, there was crazy unpublishable stuff that went on!). But then Gary continued with the Can-Am engine story, something that he and Roger both later worked on, although ‘Boost’ spent a great deal of his time at McLaren developing the 1100 hp turbo ‘Offies’ that powered the McLaren M16s which took the pole at Indy in 1971, 1973 and 1976, and Johnny Rutherford used to win the 500 in 1974 and 1976…these two guys knew how to make power.
Gary picked up the thread with the incredible story of how Chevrolet decided to cast some aluminum 427 big blocks for the Can-Am guys (ultimately becoming the LS1 that found its way into some stonking road cars). While McLaren was dominating the 1967 season with the team’s special built cast iron small block, Jim Hall was running a prototype 427 aluminum big block Chevy ‘Rat’ engine in his Chaparral 2G, which reportedly gave 650 hp at the same weight as the iron ‘Mouse’ in the McLaren. It didn’t take very long for Bruce McLaren to figure out that was the way to go for the future and so

the completely new for 1968 McLaren M8A sported the big Chevy aluminum piece, with Knutson details like Crower-based intakes made in magnesium along with his Lucas metering pumps, tachometer drives, Vertex magnetos and reworked L88 heads. This is all common knowledge, but he also told me that the blocks had no liners and were simply honed with no coatings. The pistons were then “tin plated” (with a tremendous amount of effort spent on masking the ring grooves), the whole thing then very carefully assembled with “hope” playing a major role in getting the things not to “pick-up” and score the bores (his words). And although Gary did not mention it, the chassis engineer in me must point out that the M8A used the big aluminum ‘Rat’ as a stressed member, just like the Formula 1 cars did with the Cosworth DFV (amazing!). All did not start well in 1968, despite finishing one-two at Road Atlanta, Denny Hulme’s winning car finished on seven cylinders and zero oil pressure. The second race was worse, with both cars failing to finish due to lunched engines, but then things came good, and the “Bruce and Denny Show” got rolling with the latter winning the championship and the former finishing second. From then on, the McLaren machine won/dominated every championship through 1972, unfortunately without Bruce from 1970 onward as he lost his life testing the M8D at Goodwood a couple of weeks before the start of that season. But then the night was over and with it the most enjoyable evening of my year so far (excluding those few I get to spend at home in Wales), although I made Gary promise to meet up again in the not-too-distant future.
So, to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the most amazing motorsport extravaganza of the year (true statement, and I go to a lot of racing events), which I was attending to launch the Porsche 963 LMDh car for which Multimatic is the chassis supplier. I had not seen it in the final race livery, and it was truly impressive, especially when Dane Cameron ripped it up the hill, the V8 turbo sounding way better than I had expected. It is a well-engineered race car and Multimatic is extremely proud to be involved with the program. On top of that it was a weekend of meetings, everybody being in one place, which was convenient for me as I stayed with my old friend David King just a few miles up the road. A major highlight was watching Wayne Rainey ride the Yamaha YZR500 Grand Prix bike on the hill after having breakfast with him, being overwhelmed by his enthusiasm, modesty and good-humored banter with the other motorcycle legends that joined him on those smoky two-stroke blasts up Lord March’s driveway. All that aside, the technical “moment” of the weekend was when I watched the McMurtry Spéirling launch from the start line. WTF was my reaction, not knowing much about the car other than a small tidbit that Mark Raffauf had thrown at me over cigars last year in the IMSA paddock. A diminutive, little single seater that looked attractively weird and boasting a 1000 hp electric rear drive and…a fan. More specifically, high-powered suction fans that provided a claimed 2000 kg of “downforce” (or 1000 kg depending on what you read… but impressive no matter what). No two-stroke snowmobile engine required, just electric motors. The really trick bit (not that the other bits aren’t pretty novel) is that there is apparently a plate that runs on the ground using ceramic wear plates to set the height, sealing
off the suction, and according to the chatter, it actively moves up and down as required (to optimize the cornering capability and straightline speed) in addition to the fan speed being driver controlled. The builders also claim that they have 60 kWh of battery capacity although I couldn’t figure out where that would have been hidden. It most obviously worked, blowing away the standing hill record previously held by the Volkswagen ID R Electric racer (it holds a lot of records with Romain Dumas at the wheel. He was thrashing the Ford Transit SuperVan 4 up the hill this year. 2000 hp electric four-wheel drive, but no fans, so lurid handling). The Spéirling (thunderstorm in Irish) is a massively refreshing novel approach to performance that abandons all preconceptions of what defines a supercar…but a supercar it most definitely is. Good on them! Watch the YouTube videos, it appears that the only requirement for driving it was a total belief that the downforce would work.
And now I am close to the word limit so will not dwell on our Le Mans result running the No. 77 Proton Porsche RSR entry for our drivers Harry Tincknell and Seb Priaulx and team owner Chris Reid. Suffice to say that we were fully in the hunt for the ProAm win until the 22nd hour when a bolt dropped out of the front leg of the lower wishbone, rendering all the effort and lack of sleep for naught. Hugely disappointing. But I am finishing writing this piece on the Monday after the Monza WEC round which we just won…so consistent to my life in racing the previous disaster is now forgotten. IT

TANVEER AND NAILA DEEN DOMINATE THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN RALLY TO CLAIM FIRST SERIES VICTORY

Deen and his sister Naila took their Mitsubishi EVO IX
to a comfortable win after dominating the Rocky Mountain Rally, the second round of the Canadian Rally Championship, held in Kananaskis Country, AB. The event packed 178 competitive kilometers into just seven stages, with the bulk of the Rally being held on the epic 34 km long Powderface Trail stage.
Twenty-six teams took the start, including two teams coming north from the US, and four teams making the trip from Quebec. Defending champions André and René Leblanc travelled to Western Canada in hopes of adding points to their championship run, as did 2021 Canadian Rally Championship Overall runners up Marc-André Brisebois and Marie-France Desmarais Trépanier.
Dry conditions had teams concerned about dust after recce, but winds on rally day meant dust was not a concern. With teams spending over 90 minutes on the stages, the event proved to be an

extremely tight battle, with only 7.5 seconds separating second and fourth place finishers.
The event opened with two passes of the 4 km long Loop Reverse stage to get the teams warmed up, after which Deen had a 0.8-second lead over second place. While facing challenges for stage wins, Deen would continue to lead the event and score his first overall victory in the Canadian Rally Championship.
Nick Wood and Jennifer Daly who won every stage in Open 2WD, the impressive performance included setting the fastest time on Stage 5 in the crowd-pleasing Datsun 1200 rear-wheel-drive car. The team charged up the standings from seventh overall after the short forest loop stages to claim second overall with a slim 6.3-second margin over third place.
Boris Djordjevic and John Hall finished off the event in third place, to take the final podium spot with a margin of only 1.1 seconds over André Leblanc, who drove a strong final stage to take fourth position away from Besner by 24.2 seconds.
In the Two-Wheel-Drive class, defending champion Jason Bailey was joined by Leanne Junnila in his Ford Fiesta and brought home a solid second place in class, and sixth place overall, only 35 seconds adrift after over an hour and a half of racing. The Norris family continued their Ontario Pro Challenge Series domination on July 9 at Flammboro Speedway. Son Mike Norris (No. 17) won the second feature, ahead of his dad, Tim, in the second feature. That was a reverse of their finishing order in the first Main.

Bailey Jacobs (No. 60) was the class of a strong Super Stock field at Peterborough Speedway on July 9. He passed leader Mark Gordon on Lap 12 after running second for most of the race.
On July 16, the Nostalgia Dirt Modified Tour brought 13 cars to Brighton Speedway for the first time ever. No. 75 Randy Gaudet was declared the winner of the 20-lap main event after the firstplace finisher was DQ’d with ‘weight issues.’

THE ‘WILL’S FARGO’ STORY
When‘Will’s Fargo’ rolled into any drag strip, back in the 1960s, the competition knew they were in trouble. This hemi-powered, A/Altered roadster was very well known and respected on both sides of the border. Now, for clarification purposes, this story will refer to Bill Kydd, Sr. as ‘Bill’ and Bill Kydd, Jr. as ‘Billy.’
Bill started Kydd Radiator in 1946 when Billy was six years old. In 1957, Billy built a 1956 Plymouth with a 341 Desoto Hemi in it, as a daily driver. While visiting the legendary Stu Klutton’s London, ON shop, he spotted a six, two-barrel carb intake manifold hanging on the wall and asked Stu if it would fit his car. It would, and it got installed.
He nicknamed the car ‘Will’s Fargo.’ For the uninitiated, Fargo was a Chrysler Corporation pickup that was sold in Canada until 1972. Ford sold a Mercury pickup back in those days, as well, while GM Canada had the Maple Leaf pickup. I always thought that Billy should have called the car ‘Billy the Kydd,’ but they wisely stuck with the original name.
Billy joined the family business in 1961 and immediately started building his first roadster. He used 2” x 3” tubing and a 413 Dodge truck motor with a Mallory ignition and fuel injection bought from Ridler Racing Equipment (Keith and Doug Ridler). Doug
jokingly told Billy to ‘save his money’ instead of spending it on a Dodge motor. The Ridlers had a pretty quick roadster but switched up to a Top Fueler that they campaigned for several years.
Billy originally had an Olds rear-end in the car, but when he spit the pinion out the back of the housing, at Cayuga, he switched to a 9” Ford. Billy picked up a 413-wedge motor, that turned out to be not that good for them, initially. They got Charley Wells of Wells Foundry to build an ‘in and out’ box for them, and things began to pick up with their program. They updated the 413 with some good heads and an Isky cam, resulting in the motor really coming to life.
Scott Wilson had bought the Ridler roadster, and after Billy beat him once (I’m sure Scott will deny this part!), Scott also moved up to a Top Fueler, with which he had great success. They continued working on the wedge and added Stage 3 heads, making the car even quicker. In 1965, they set the A/A MPH record at Indy and the Americans now knew who this guy was. In the latter part of that year, Bill had asked what they needed to go quicker and faster. The answer…a Hemi!
They acquired the block from the Hot Rod Shop and two sets of heads from the
Ramchargers. A set of Joe Pisano pistons, plus machine work by Bob Atchison and the 482” Hemi was set for launch. This new motor resulted in the car going eight milers per hour faster!
In 1967, Billy tried an independent rear suspension, with help from an American chassis engineer. But the motor had far too much power, so they returned to the tried and true 9” solid rear axle. They also switched to a ‘Clutchflite’ tranny. In those days, the Chrondek timing systems did not record reaction times. Billy, in my opinion, was second only to the late, great Herbie ‘Go-Fast’ Rogers when it came to reaction times. I recall looking at the times and seeing him further off his index than his competitor, but still getting the win light. The only explanation for that, you ask. His reaction times were better.
In 1968, NHRA Division Three Director Bob Daniels – probably responding to complaints as half the A/Altereds had gone home when they saw Billy – pulled Will’s Fargo out of the lanes and had it make a dual-lane timing pass where a new record (8.95) was set. He backed that up, in later eliminations.
Around this time, Billy had been swapping the record with Neil ‘Pappy’ Ellis out of Detroit in a big block Chev powered roadster. This was a very friendly competition, and many battles were held at St. Thomas Dragway. That same year, I was driving slowly on the 401 to Windsor Dragway on a very foggy morning. And for some reason, I moved from the fast lane to the slow lane. Moments later, a Ford pickup blew by us at ‘full song’ with Will’s Fargo on the trailer. I saw Bill in the tech lanes and mentioned it to him. He laughed that huge roar of his!
Another story happened later that year. They hurt the 482 Hemi the week before they had to go to the final Division III points race at Bowling Green, KY. They had built another Hemi with a 5/8” arm in it that worked out to 530 cubes! As the ‘Statute of Limitations’ has expired, I can tell the story. Bill added food colouring to their race gas and made a big spectacle about pouring the ‘fuel’ into the car; something that was seen by ‘many.’ Final run, win light, waved right

past the scales and straight to fuel check. The following Wednesday, they got a call from the Division office that all was good.
In 1970, Ford of Canada Performance Advisor John ‘Igor’ Phillips decided that he was going to create an even bigger race team than he had already, so he added some new members. Billy and Scott Wilson were two of them, with both receiving 428 Mustangs. Billy happened to notice, at one of the races, that the original members of the team had engine parts that he didn’t have, so he asked for those parts for his car. Nope. The marriage was over.
The next year, Billy sold the altered chassis to a guy in New York state who campaigned it for several years. He sold the 482” Hemi to the Blue Angels, in Ohio, and the 530” to Bill Fry. Urban legend has it that the 530 is sitting on an engine stand in Brian Noakes’ shop.
Kydd Radiator was always the place for racers to go for all their radiator work, as well as custom work. Former employee Alex Litt joined up with Jack Bailey to create BS&B Radiator, now run by his son and grandson. Alex had a young man named Jim McClelland working for him and Jim left to form Ace Radiator. In 1985, Scott Wilson asked Billy if he had a job for one of his employees as Scott was moving to Florida. Billy did, and that was the late Jim McCallum, a great fabricator. Those two Jims had campaigned the James Boys Willys gasser for several years.
Bill Kydd probably could have been a fullback for the Argonauts as he was a very powerful and imposing figure. Many competitors and track officials had seen that big index finger waved in front of them (fortunately, I was not one of them).
Billy took over the business when Bill died,
in 1992, and ran it until retiring in 2007. Today, at age 82, he looks much younger and still dabbles in some custom work out in his garage/shop in the backyard. Bill and his wife Fay joined a choral society in 2000 and even though he says he never sang before; he now thoroughly enjoys it. Billy has a sweet 1956 Plymouth quite like his original car, but without the six-carb intake. He regularly takes the car to local cruise nights and on actual cruises. As you can imagine, it has all the cool stuff that he has built and sold for years, including air conditioning.
Bill and Billy made a great team, and both are well remembered by the racers of the day. Will’s Fargo struck fear into the hearts of many, many racers.
On a personal note, over the years, I’ve probably teched thousands of race cars. Billy was on my top-five list of favourite drivers as he was always happy, positive and polite. IT
