Welcome to the 2021 edition of Inside Track Motorsport News ’ annual Canadian Racing Guide schedule issue. This issue is one of the year’s most anticipated editions of Canada’s only motorsports publication. Every year, whether it’s at preseason events like the Canadian International Auto Show and the Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo, or calls or email from our loyal subscribers, this is the issue I get asked about the most. Obviously, those questions are coming via phone and email these days due to the COVID-19 pandemic stretching into its second year.
Unfortunately, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has put a halt to almost all organized motorsport in Canada, although the US and other parts of the world are slowly letting fans back to the track. As a result, we’ve made this year’s edition of the Canadian Racing Guide digital-only for the second straight year, which will allow us to, once again, continuously update our schedule listings throughout the year as Canadian tracks slowly re-open during the summer (fingers crossed) and series adapt their schedules to fit the ever-changing lockdown measures across the country.
With constant updates, we have labelled any schedules that haven’t been released as “schedule unavailable at press time” and urge you to keep referring to the Canadian Racing Guide for additional information as we update schedules throughout the year. I also strongly urge you to check with your local short tracks, road courses and drag strips – plus the dozens of travelling series across Canada – before making plans to attend any live racing in 2021 when the time comes to welcome fans back to the track.
Together with Inside Track Motorsports News , series and track promoters make the Canadian Racing Guide possible and we ask you to consider their facilities and series when making your plans. It’s no secret they are hurting right now as the need to contain the spread of COVID-19 has rendered large gatherings impossible throughout the opening weeks of the 2021 Canadian racing season.
Looking at the schedules, please note that where there are multiday events, in several instances only the first day appears in the schedule. For example, the Friday date of a three-day racing weekend might be the only one listed.

WhenMichael Cannon was asked to join Chip Ganassi Racing to be Scott Dixon’s race engineer for the NTT INDYCAR 2020 season, he didn’t hesitate. Over his career, Cannon has engineered and mentored a number of promising young drivers such as Santino Ferrucci (at Dale Coyne Racing) and Simona de Silvestro (at HVM Racing). Pairing the New Zealander with his new engineer resulted in Dixon earning his sixth IndyCar title.
“Cannon is a really fun person and brings a very different perspective,” said Dixon, who turns 41 this year. “When you work with the same people, you tend to process things the same way. Michael would ask us why we do things that way. He’s come from teams that do things completely differently. He’s very easy to work with and fits in extremely well with the team, which is never easy to do. That’s what really helped all of us find our way and work well together.”
Born in Montreal, QC, Cannon, whose father John Cannon raced in Formula 1, Can Am and F5000, wanted to be a pilot. At 12 years old he built his first push go-kart and drove Formula Fords in 1984 and 1985.
Early in his racing career, Cannon joined Thomas Knapp and Robert Stalker to support Scott Schubot in Camel Lights. As a mechanic, Cannon found himself wearing a number of hats working for a team on a modest budget. He built gear boxes and shocks, changed engines, and drove the truck and trailer. Schubot purchased a data acquisition system in 1986 for his Sports 2000 effort, asking Cannon to operate it. In 1989, he was on the first team to put a data acquisition on an Indy Lights car.
After working for Angelo Ferro, who owned Genoa Racing for eight years, Cannon was hired to support Lee Bentham’s Indy Lights
program at Player’s Forsythe Racing. Then, following two seasons as assistant engineer to Patrick Carpentier under Lee Dykstra, he became Carpentier’s lead engineer in 2000. Cannon moved to Herdez in 2004 but returned to Forsythe to engineer Mario Dominguez. While at Forsythe, A.J. Allmendinger joined the team mid-season, replacing the fired Dominguez (for taking out teammate Paul Tracy at the Milwaukee oval). Their chemistry was magic and together they won five races, their first three together consecutively. Had Allmendinger not clipped the wall while leading at Surfer’s Paradise, the pair could have prevailed over Sebastien Bourdais for the 2006 Champ Car championship.
Any engineer in the paddock would jump at the chance to work with such a consummate professional and successful driver as Dixon, who is poised to exceed Mario Andretti’s all time wins of 52 and challenge A.J. Foyt’s record 67.
“This was an opportunity to work with indisputably one of the greatest drivers in IndyCar racing and a fantastic team,” explained Cannon. “Scott (Dixon) is the number one example of how you go about the job of being an IndyCar racer – how you are fast, make intelligent decisions, scheme and plot. He is flawless in so many respects and that is what makes him so difficult to beat. Dixon is engaging, funny and outspoken. He is one of the more gregarious people in the paddock to be around. The iceman moniker is probably more related to once the visor goes down. Then he’s very cut and dry and computer-like.”
Amazingly, Dixon has won a race in 17 straight seasons (2005 to 2021). And with Cannon’s support, Dixon captured his sixth title with four victories, the most of any driver, during 2020. Only A.J. Foyt has more titles with seven over his driving career.
“The greatest resource Ganassi has is the people who have been
put together,” revealed Cannon. “There is an incredible amount of chemistry. Nothing is ever a problem for anyone. I was unprepared for just how accommodating everyone on the team has been. The whole place is egoless. You can’t help but succeed. It is really impressive. They win championships on a regular basis.
“Ganassi is an interesting place to work and very enjoyable. They are so dedicated to helping their teammates and coworkers. It changes my job by allowing me to focus more on some of the minutiae because you have other people taking care of some of the things you usually are responsible for.”
The Ganassi team has earned 115 victories to date more than 31 IndyCar seasons, including four Indy 500 wins, 13 championships and 89 poles. A vacancy was created when Chris Simmons, Dixon’s long-time engineer, was moved up to a performance development role overseeing all the team’s entries in IndyCar, Extreme E and IMSA.
“We work really hard and everybody uses their ears,” stated Mike Hull, Managing Director. “It isn’t that someone like Michael brings setup information, which people on the outside might think. You get a
fresh set of eyes looking at how you process your technical product and it helps the other entries be better. That interchange is really important. It provides an avenue in how you process your information, your setup and reaction to technology inside Chip Ganassi Racing.
“We listened to Michael when he came in the door to understand how we could make ourselves better. Michael is a driver’s engineer. He has driven race cars. He understands instinctively what the driver is saying, what he needs, or what the driver needs next. He understands how to prioritize what is most important for the track setup.”
Another incentive for Cannon was switching to the Indianapolis-based Ganassi team where he lives with his wife and children instead of commuting to the Coyne shop in Plainfield, IL. And the chemistry was evident immediately as Dixon won the first three races of the 2020 COVID-affected season at Texas, the Indianapolis road course and Road America.
“I was fortunate to work with Scott to win the 2020 championship,” reflected Cannon. “The IndyCar series is hard because there are so many quality drivers and teams that you never know where the competition is coming from.” IT

In the early 1960s, the Ford Motor Company was heavily involved in motorsport, especially stock car and drag racing, and was dipping its feet into IndyCar and Formula 1 engine development. In 1963, the company decided to get into major rallying and fielded a team with the then-new V8-powered Falcon Sprint for the 1964 Monte Carlo rally. This was an all-out and expensive effort to dominate a form of motorsport Ford had never pursued.
But a rally driver from Northern Ireland driving a diminutive tenfoot-long car put a monkey wrench into the Ford juggernaut.
Started before World War I, the Monte Carlo Rally became the most prestigious event of its kind, with entrants from all over Europe, the event ending in the sovereign city-state on the French Riviera.
The Falcon Sprints were assembled with Cobra modifications at Ford’s Lincoln Cars Ltd. in London, England, and horsepower in the 260-cubicinch V8 was upped to 260 from the stock 164. Disc brakes, suspension mods and a heavy-duty Ford Galaxie rear end were installed, too.
But lots of power was not the key to success, as the men from Dearborn found out. For several years, the techniques of winter rally driving by Scandinavian drivers, along with the road-hugging tenacity of the front-drive SAAB 96 was a winning combination.
had previously competed with a Sunbeam Rapier and Austin Healey before the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally.
Meanwhile, with success in both the Canadian Shell 4000 and Tulip rally in 1963, Ford pressed on with its program for Monte Carlo. The 1963 cars were prepared by the Dearborn Pressed Steel Company, which performed a lot of Ford’s prototype and show car work. With this background, the new cars for the Monte Carlo were prepared in England. Eight Falcons were geared up and part of the driving team included automotive writer Denise McCluggage and Grand Prix ace Graham Hill. The cars and drivers put in many practice miles and one team driver, Bosse Ljungfeldt, stood above the rest. The way he threw the high-powered Falcon around the narrow mountain passes in testing was garnering a reputation.
There were nine starting points for the 299 cars entered in the 1964 event. Hopkirk and his co-driver Harry Liddon began in Minsk, Belarus, meeting up with the other five Mini works cars and teams in Rheims, France. Ford would start its assault in Oslo, Norway, including Ljungfeldt and co-driver Fergus Sager. All cars were set up in divisions according to engine size and, in some circles, this proved to be a controversial handicap for the bigger cars.
The other major player in winter rallies at the time was BMC with its Mini Cooper S. This small and powerful (for its size) car, initially conceived as an ultra-economy car for the British driving public, was modified extensively for competition since its introduction in 1959.
But the car is only part of the story. While the Scandinavian drivers were very good at winter rallying (think Erik Carlsson and Timo Makinen), a five-time circuit of Ireland winner and rally veteran named Patrick (Paddy) Hopkirk was ready to do battle with his Cooper S. He
For the first 2,000 miles, all went well for the competitors with good weather. Ljungfeldt was impressive in his Falcon, placing first on four of the special stages and tying for first in the fifth with Hopkirk. An extraordinary single-lap time of just under six minutes over the Monte Carlo Grand Prix course gave the Swede second place overall behind the winning Hopkirk. Carlsson and his SAAB took third and Hopkirk’s teammate Makinen placed fourth.
There was some talk that the rules favoured small-engined cars
(Chrysler had entered three Valiants in the GT class), but Ford felt it had proven its point. All its entrants finished the 1964 Monte, and although Ford had been protested and declared illegal (but exonerated), its heart was not in fielding a company-backed rally team with the upcoming introduction of its Mustang.
For Hopkirk, he became a household name with his win. He returned to the UK with many accolades and public and broadcast appearances. He even received a note from The Beatles. He retired from rallying in the early 1970s, built a successful career in the sale of accessory products, and at 88 years old, is still involved as an ambassador for the sport. In 2016 he received his OBE from Princess Anne.
Ljungfeldt continued to race, including rallies in Europe with the Ford-backed Mustang team of Alan Mann. He died in 1988. IT

AsFormula 1 teams fight on track for wins, points, and ultimately two world championships, a behind the scenes balancing act continues to play a key role in deciding this year’s outcome and possibly next year’s, too.
With the 2022 rules bringing wholesale changes to the cars, Formula 1 teams need to find the best mix of staying competitive this year, keeping one eye on the next, and choosing the right moment to shift all their focus to their new design.
No matter what they do, almost every choice becomes a pay me now or pay me later quandary.
“Clearly, you’re going to compromise something by going one route or the other, so I think you just have to be pragmatic,” said McLaren Racing’s technical director James Key. “What we can see is the 2022 car is such a different thing and there’s so much work to understand fully what these cars are going to be like that naturally there has to be an ongoing project in the background there somewhere, so it’s never a case of one or the other.”
For some, the pragmatic choice is an easy one. Even before this season started, Haas F1 Team boss Günther Steiner said his outfit wouldn’t “do anything with the 2021 car” and “go full throttle on” 2022. That may sound like an easy decision for a team battling not to be last this year, but it still has consequences.

Further up the grid, those decisions get more intricate. With Lewis Hamilton locking horns with Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen on every weekend, the Mercedes AMG F1 Team knows that a move to forgo more speed this year could come at the cost of world championship glory.
“You could spend all night staring at the ceiling over that instead of sleeping, but you can comfort yourself by knowing that at least the people you’re competing with have got the same dilemma,” said Mercedes chief technical officer James Allison.
Williams Racing driver, and Canadian, Nicholas Latifi pointed out that even gaining one spot in the final standings means a difference of millions of dollars in prize money that could ease other pressures on the team in 2022.
“It’s definitely a question that every team is weighing and trying to decide when is the right moment to really just abandon ship on development regardless of the position of the car?” said the Canadian.
“It’s a very tricky one to get right. As a driver, it’s clear that you want developments coming every race because it makes you go
“Over the years, teams that face the same sort of dilemma make similar judgments. They tend to do a little bit more on the current car than they ought to, just because the bird in the hand feels a little more valuable than the one in the bush, but no one – unless they’re pretty stupid – ignores what’s coming down the tracks.”
If that already didn’t create enough complexity, regulation changes for 2021 added even more to the mix by stripping relatively more performance from cars with a low rear ride height like the Mercedes than high-rake style entries such as the Red Bull.
While Mercedes’ work in the first few weeks of the season moved
it closer to Red Bull, it also demonstrated the pressure teams face as they try to balance short- and long-term goals.
“There simply isn’t a solution: You can’t do everything this year and everything next year; you can only split your resources in a way that feels like you are being as brave as you dare to be,” said Allison.
The final piece of the puzzle relates to the wind tunnel and computational fluid dynamics time allotted to the teams, which is now done on a sliding scale based on the previous year’s results. The last place team gets about 20 percent more time than first.
Although the floor changes also hit Aston Martin hard and it went from fourth overall in constructors last year to struggling to score points in 2021, trying to close the gap likely isn’t in the cards.
“We have a limited amount of time and using it to regain the lost downforce for this year comes at the cost of not doing experiments for next year,” said Aston Martin team boss Otmar Szafnauer.
“There comes a time where you just have to,” added Szafnauer, stopping mid-sentence while making a chopping motion with his hand on his desk. “We’re just about there now.”
Although it hasn’t shifted to 2022 yet, Szafnauer indicated that it would likely happen sometime in early June.

And that’s what really keeps Allison up at night: teams making huge strides on their 2022 car, while his outfit must continue to make trade-offs to stay on top of its ongoing title battles.
“The people who are scary or potentially scarier are the ones that have absolutely nothing to gain or lose this year,” said Allison,
“A team like Ferrari, let’s say, is well-resourced, absolutely not in the fight this year and, as it happens, boosted considerably in their aerodynamic resource by the handicapping system and their dreadful results from the year before – they don’t have the same type of dilemma that we have, and they could go far more all-in on next year and just accept whatever mess occurs this year.”
While who will do what and when remains anybody’s guess, one thing is certain: teams need to get it right in 2021 or they’ll put themselves on the wrong foot this year, and potentially stay there in 2022.
And, as the saying goes, timing is everything in racing.
“Deadlines will come quickly,” said Key. “As soon as we’re over the August break that’s when your definition period really begins to kick in and you’ve got to finalize the architecture and the direction you want to take on certain major parts of the car. I think in those months, the balancing act is going to be the key thing.” IT
