his summer has been a “long strange trip,” mostly between different rooms in our own homes for some of us. But not for all of us as you will note on the page directly to your right. The most certain things amid much uncertainty is that this planet will continue to spin, the sun will rise every day, the tides will ebb and flow, the moon will wax and wane, and The Almanac will always point out the wonder of those simple, natural things. We have a lot of content in this issue to compliment your leisure time this fall. Whatever you do for fun, please do it safely and with great kindness. Home is More Important Than Ever

O

ver the past few months, our homes have become more important than ever. As families have been navigating the challenges of working remotely, taking classes on-line, and engaging in other daily activities together under the same roof, many buyers are considering new must-haves when it comes to their homes. Realtors in every community can help with advice and knowledge on local market conditions.

Following the first quarter shut-down due to the pandemic, there is a consensus that the industry is now experiencing a large-scale recovery. Sales were solid in Florida in January and February

followed by an almost 50 percent decrease in closings year-over-year for March and April, but June numbers bounced back strong with statewide new pending sales of single-family homes up 23.2% and condos up 19.8% compared to June 2019.

There is little question that this current “gold rush” is driven by record-low mortgage rates and the growing realization that our homes may well become a bigger mainstay of our existence when it comes to work, play, and school than ever before, and for the foreseeable future. Rates fell to just 2.88% for 30-year, fixed-rate loans in the week ending August 6, according to Freddie Mac. Luchian Bercea is a Realtor® with Dale Sorensen Real Estate who specializes in helping locals and newcomers find their dream home here on the Treasure Coast. He explains that buyers are more focused now not only on specific features but also on location in a different way.

“Larger yards, home offices that can accommodate two working adults, and quick access to beaches and other outdoor recreational areas that allow for social distancing seem to be the priority over proximity to shopping and other brick and mortar services. Homes with pools are also on in high demand,” said Luchian.

Search data across multiple sites such as Realtor.com shows that searches for homes with pools have increased as much as 40% in some areas. Luchian agrees that the current market is brisk and he is seeing more buyers looking for yearround homes both inland and on the barrier island.

The virus does not seem to have slowed down his viewings though, he points out that many people from out of state are looking at property with him from their own locations.

“People generally feel quite comfortable going for a viewing and most of them are wearing masks. I'm also doing FaceTime viewings with buyers in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut plus a huge number of buyers from California.”

It is a sign of the times and the Florida residential real estate market is projected to grow, especially for sellers. According to an August news release by Florida Realtors, economists generally consider a six month supply of for-sale homes (inventory) to be balanced between buyers and sellers. An inventory greater than six months is a buyer’s market; an inventory of fewer than six months is a seller’s market. By the end of the second quarter of 2020, Florida’s inventory was approximately 2.8 months.

Though more single-family homes are starting to come onto the market, the demand from buyers continues to result in values trending upward. During the second quarter, the median price

for a Florida single-family home was $277,500, a 4.7% increase over last year.

Locally, the median list price per square foot in Indian River County is $164, and $143 in St. Lucie County.

Beyond the numbers though, the Treasure Coast offers a lifestyle like no other in Florida. Far from the high rise ridden beaches to the north and south, this little stretch of Atlantic coastline is a gem that Luchian loves to show off. His advice for buyers?

Mental Healthcare Thrives with Telehealth

T

here is a lot going on in the world today and many are feeling, at the very least, somewhat anxious. We are fortunate to live in an area that offers a lot of space and time for peace, tranquility, and reflection. A walk on the beach at sunrise, a cool dip in the pool or ocean, or just the quiet contemplation of glorious sunset is all some of us need to regain perspective. But what happens when your usual coping mechanisms just aren’t meeting the moment anymore?

The Mental Health Association in Indian River County has always wanted you to know that “It’s okay to get help” and now it’s easier than ever!

Sometimes good things come out of bad situations and the Mental Health Association in IRC, a 501c3 nonprofit, offers mental health screenings without an appointment, in person or, now, via telehealth. Their motto has always been “just walk in” but in today’s world, most people are fearful to go anywhere…and that’s totally understandable. Luckily, in an age of technology, the MHA, along with many other medical professionals, can offer counseling & therapy via those handy little gadgets in all of our pockets.

Telehealth technology is not new, but it has become widespread because of the pandemic.

So, you’re not “tech savvy?” Don’t let it intimidate you…it’s really very easy. The two most common methods

of attending a telehealth meeting is with Zoom or FaceTime. Both options are apps that are available at no-charge.

If you have an Apple product such as an iPhone, iPad, iMac or MacBook computer, FaceTime is already installed on your device, simply double click, and you’re off and running. If you are an Android or Windows user, you can go to Zoom.com and download the app for free. Then, simply follow the directions. Many providers may use an alternate method however, all are easy, and your provider will be happy to help you connected.

Getting the most of your telehealth appointment is all about being prepared.

Here are some helpful tips.

• Find a quiet place, free of distractions • Double check your camera, speakers, and microphone • Write down symptoms, questions, or concerns • Have a list of your medications handy • Determine a follow up Telehealth allows clinicians to connect with anyone who is struggling with their health or mental health. Senior Resource Association Finds Fresh Ways to Help Homebound Seniors In Indian River County

S

ince the onset of COVID-19 and the escalated demand by food-insecure, homebound seniors in Indian River County, Senior Resource Association (SRA) continues striving to find alternative funding and creative ways to bridge the gap between canceled fundraising events and the reality that more seniors in the community are in need. Their Meals on Wheels program has experienced a 75% increase in clients since March 2020 – this equates to serving more than 450 homebound seniors each week and delivering more than 12,000 meals per month.

Thanks to a Meals on Wheels America grant that was awarded to the organization in June, Senior Resource Association was able to partner with local restaurants to help meet the demand.

The idea behind the new program was born out of the organization’s desire to

provide seniors with fresh alternatives to meals and simultaneously help boost the local economy. The program has three main objectives: • Safely deliver nutritious meals and conduct wellness checks to as many homebound, at-risk seniors as funding allows.

• Help boost the local economy by partnering with local restaurants to provide delicious and nutritious meals to the County’s most vulnerable residents.

• Offer diversity for clients by providing one (1) extra meal and wellness check each week, which is the weekly meal prepared and packaged by restaurants in Indian River County and delivered by trained SRA staff and volunteers.

The temporary Meals on Wheels program began the first week of July.

purchases 450 meals from a local restaurant, who prepares and packages the meals and delivers them to SRA’s Meals on Wheels kitchen in Vero Beach each Tuesday. Trained volunteers and SRA staff then deliver the lunch and a wellness check to their clients.

Criteria for restaurant selections were based on the restaurants’ health and safety inspections, fresh menu options appropriate for seniors, and restaurants who have previously supported SRA’s mission.

Wild Thyme Catering prepared the meals in July and 14 Bones prepared fresh meals each week during the month of August. Chive and Dining with Dignity will provide the meals for September and October.

also launched a new Grocery Shopping Assistance program. All seniors age 60 and older in Indian River County are eligible for the service. SRA staff pick up the grocery list, do the shopping, and collect payment at time of delivery on the same day – with no delivery fee incurred by the senior. The program started during COVID-19 to help protect at-risk older adults. Due to its popularity and ability to keep vulnerable seniors safe while avoiding crowded grocery stores, the new program will remain in place as a permanent Senior Supportive Service by SRA. CARES Act funding from Indian River County and the State of Florida were instrumental in the ability to continue the new program.

Be Kind to Horseshoe Crabs

Y

ou have seen them on the beach and, chances are, if you have frequented beaches further north, you have likely seen lots of them. Horseshoe Crabs are one of the oldest creatures on the planet, often referred to as “living fossils.� Older than dinosaurs, they have been around for some 445 million years and are nearly identical to their original ancestors.

But their name is a misnomer because they are not crustaceans. Horseshoe Crabs are arthropods, more closely related to spiders and other arachnids, and they are built for survival. They look like army tanks with a large hard carapace, ten legs, and a spiky tail that can appear menacing. Of course, they are harmless and that tail (telson) serves a simple purpose which is to help flip the animal back upright when it gets turned over by a wave.

While horseshoe crabs are not really crabs, most definitely not edible, and seem to go about their business of survival in a benign manner, these animals are key to human health. In fact, if you have ever been vaccinated or received any kind of intravenous drugs,

you probably owe your life to them.

That is because they are the only animal on earth with a blood-clotting agent known as Limulus Amebocyte Lysate, or LAL, which clots in the presence of certain groups of bacteria. Their blood is blue in color because of the presence of copper in hemocyanin, a protein that carries oxygen.

Horseshoe crab blood is used to test sterility of medical equipment and prosthetics including implants, heart stents, pacemakers, and all injectable and vaccines. The FDA requires the use of LAL to test such drugs to detect the presence of harmful bacteria (contamination) and has been doing so for over 30 years. The good news is that harvesting horseshoe crab blood is not particularly dangerous and most of the animals are released back to the ocean. But there is skepticism about the mortality rate which can be as high as thirty percent depending upon transport conditions, stress, and the amount of blood that is harvested. Pressure from some animal rights and environmental groups prompted several pharmaceutical companies to manufacture a synthetic

alternative but to date, The United States Pharmacopeia, published annually by the United States Pharmacopeial Convention does not consider the synthetics to hold up to the gold standard of LAL from horseshoe crab blood.

Approximately 500 thousand horseshoe crabs are collected annually for blood harvesting. Fortunately, amid the race to develop a vaccine for COVID-19, the amount of LAL necessary for safety testing is minimal and industry experts say that it would take only a day of production to manufacture enough to assure the purity of even an estimated

five billion doses. The LAL test was first developed by Massachusetts Biological Laboratory and subsequently licensed and manufactured beginning in 1974 by Associates of Cape Cod. The test replaced the horrifying practice of using rabbits for the same purpose.

When you encounter one of these fascinating creatures on the beach remember all they have done for humanity (and rabbits) and proceed with care. Horseshoe crabs breed at night during high tides, under new and full moons. They nest on the beach so if you see them on the shore, leave them alone. If you encounter one that has been turned on its back, gently turn it back over. Never handle or pick up a horseshoe crab by its tail as this will injure the animal.

Sustainable Home Goods Creatively Sourced

E

very minute, all over the world, enough plastic to fill a garbage truck flows into our oceans from rivers and streams and, on land, nearly 80 percent of recyclable plastic still winds up in landfills. The pollution issue has never been worse. But we humans are a curious species, bent on solving as many problems as we cause, and the idea that innovation loves a crisis is more evident today than ever when it comes to dealing with the plastics predicament.

The durability of plastic is part of the problem but it's also a big part of the solution and manufacturers are embracing this dichotomy to produce practical products on a large scale that meet a growing demand for sustainability.

Outdoor furniture company Polywood has committed to recycling 1 million pounds of ocean-bound plastic by 2021 by launching the Ocean Chair, and outdoor Adirondack chair made completely from ocean-bound plastics. For each chair made, 1,000 singleuse plastic containers are saved from the sea.

The Ocean chair is available in 11 fade-proof colors and features a curated series of four

Adirondack chairs that create a cresting wave when arranged together. Sunshine Furniture in Vero Beach is one of only two showrooms on the Treasure Coast where the collection is available. Owner, Gail Williams says they also use this collection for many commercial jobs.

“This category in outdoor furniture is extremely popular because it is almost maintenance-free and is perfect for our Florida climate.” She also adds that Polywood is not the only brand they carry in this type of furniture. “We also have Berlin Gardens and Seaside which have the same footprint and philosophy.”

Global flooring manufacturer Mohawk is an industry leader in sustainability. The company recycles 7.1 billion pounds of material per year including 5.4 billion pounds of plastic bottles it uses to make durable polyfiber carpeting. The company’s Everstrand product is made nearly 100 percent out of PET plastic bottles.

“I’ve seen the manufacturing process in person. It’s fascinating and really impressive,” says Deby Winter, owner of Carpet and Tile

The new poly fiber made from PET plastic is even more durable and, according to Mohawk, makes a stronger yarn than other plastics. “Customers are embracing sustainable products like these carpets and visit our store specifically asking to see them.� Carpet and Tile Warehouse also carries a unique line of products made from recycled glass that mimic the look of pebble, often used in shower floors. This eliminates the additional use of chemicals since the product does not need to be sealed.

Other companies from startups to big household brands are leaders in reducing ocean-bound or sourced plastics. Girlfriend Collective is an emerging athleisure startup known for its affordable athletic wear made from recycled plastics, and Patagonia has been recycling plastic soda bottles into fleece

since 1993. In 2015, Adidas partnered with the environmental organization, Parley for the Oceans to turn marine pollution into sportswear. In 2019 they produced over 11 million sneakers made of plastic fished out of the ocean.

Often, the best solutions are the result of extraordinary challenges and one thing is certain; progress often springs from extraordinary failure. Fortunately, in the sustainable and creatively sourced home goods market, choices are multiplying by the day but those buying decisions are ultimately up to all of us.

Florida’s First Thanksgiving

O

n September 8, 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and 800 Spanish settlers founded the city of St. Augustine in Spanish La Florida.

As soon as they were ashore, the landing party celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving. Afterward, Menéndez laid out a meal to which he invited as guests the native Seloy tribe who occupied the site. The celebrant of the Mass was St. Augustine’s first pastor, Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, and the feast day in the church calendar was that of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. What exactly the Seloy natives thought of those strange liturgical proceedings we do not know, except that, in his personal chronicle, Father Lopez wrote that “the Indians imitated all they saw done.”

What was the meal that followed? From our knowledge of what the Spaniards had on board their five ships, we can surmise that it was cocido, a stew made from salted pork and garbanzo beans, laced with garlic seasoning, and accompanied by hard sea biscuits and red wine. If the Seloy contributed to the meal from their own food stores, then the menu could have included turkey, venison, gopher tortoise, mullet, drum, sea catfish, maize (corn), beans, and squash.

This was the first community act of religion and thanksgiving in the first permanent European settlement in North America. It took place just 300 yards north of the Castillo de San Marcos, at what is now the Mission of Nombre de Dios. This event is commemorated today by a 250-foot cross which stands on the original landing site.

Today's Holiday The Thanksgiving at St. Augustine was celebrated 56 years before the Puritan Pilgrim thanksgiving at Plymouth Plantation (Massachusetts), but it did not become the origin of a national annual tradition. During the 18th century, British forces won out over those of Spain and France for mastery over the continent. Thus, British observances, such as the annual reenactment of the Pilgrims’ harvest festival in 1621, became a national practice.

After the United States became an independent country, Congress recommended one yearly day of thanksgiving for the whole nation to celebrate. George Washington suggested the date November 26.

In 1863, during the bitter struggle of America’s Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln established the last Thursday in November as a National Day of Thanksgiving, making it truly a national holiday. The President urged prayers in churches and in homes calling on the "whole American people" wherever they lived to unite "with one heart and one voice" in observing a special day of thanksgiving, and to "implore the interposition of the almighty to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it...to full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and union."

Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital Welcomes New Cardiologist

C

leveland Clinic Indian River Hospital welcomes board-certified interventional cardiologist Carlos Andres Gonzalez Lengua, MD. Dr. Gonzalez earned his Doctorate from Universidad Nacional de Colombia School of Medicine.

He completed fellowships in cardiac CT/ MRI at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital; in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai Beth Israel hospitals; and in structural heart disease at New York University School of Medicine (NYU Langone Medical Center).

Interventional cardiology involves minimally invasive tests and procedures typically performed in a cardiac catheterization lab, also known as a “cath lab.” Heart catheters are small flexible tubes that are used to access the heart and blood vessels. Special imaging equipment is used to assess how well blood is flowing

and identify any blockages in the heart’s arteries. The most common interventional procedures are angioplasty and stenting, both of which can address blocked arteries without open heart surgery.

The Welsh Heart Center at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital has evolved into a leader in advanced cardiac care. Since its inception in 2006, more than 18,000 cardiac surgeries, heart catheterizations and stent procedures have been performed. Catch a Wave The Easy Way

S

urfing takes practice and, for many of us, a physical skill set we just don’t have anymore. On the other hand, bodyboarding is fun, easy and offers beachgoers a chance to cool off, soak up some sun, and experience the special thrill found only in the power and magic of a breaking wave.

Bodyboarding is an ancient form of surfing believed to have originated with Indigenous Polynesians who rode “Alaia” boards either on their belly, knees, or sometimes on their feet.

Alaia boards were generally made from the wood of Acacia koa trees and eventually evolved into what is known as a “Paipo,” a more modern form typically made from wood or fiberglass.

From there, engineer-inventor Tom Morey, considered the father of bodyboarding, created the “boogie board,” which he designed to bring a fast, lightweight, and inexpensive option to the masses.

Riding a boogie board requires no special skill other than a basic level of fitness and the ability to swim. It is also a wonderful way to introduce young children to the ocean where they can learn the movement of the sea and how to handle themselves in the waves. For adults, riding waves is not only a blast but is also a great workout for the core and upper body.

Safety First

Before we get into equipment and technique it’s important to keep safety in mind before you go riding. Sunscreen is at the top of the list.

applying and reapplying. Additionally, ride in a guarded area and check the water conditions before you go in. Rip currents are always dangerous, but shore breaks are also a hazard for riders. If the shoreline is sloped and waves are breaking to close, you could find yourself crashing face-first into the sand.

Also, pay attention to other people in the water. You may see a great coming but if there are people in your potential path, just skip it, move over, and catch the next one.

Equipment

There are all kinds of boards available in different price ranges. Some are fiberglass, like surfboards, and many more are made from varied types of foam but here is a tip: our beaches rarely see the enormous powerful waves common in Hawaii and on the Pacific coast. In Florida, riding a foam core board will make even small waves feel faster and more exciting. The most important consideration when looking for the right board is size. They usually range from 32 to 48 inches so the best way to select the proper size is to hold the board in front of you, just under your chin, and make sure it extends to your knees. Avoid styrofoam boards as they tend to break too easily- and look for something with a slick bottom. Another

important feature you will want is a wrist leash. You and everyone else around you will be safer if your board does not escape you in a wave. Optional equipment includes short swim fins. These can help with speed and steering and are often used by advanced boarders in big surf.

Technique

If you’re just beginning or teaching a child to ride, it is best to start out at low tide in the shallow white water near shore to get used to the feel of the board and the movement of the water. Once you are comfortable then you can head for the bigger waves. You will catch the best ride on a wave just as it’s about to crest. You should be able to feel the pull in the wall of the wave before it breaks. The biggest mistake beginners make is expecting that the board will do all the work and all they need to do is hang on for the ride. This usually results in a loss of balance and a good tumble off the board. To ride well and stay balanced you must grip both rails tightly and keep tension between your upper body and the board. This will give you more control, resulting in a better, safer ride. Once you have mastered the basics, you will be off and running with the waves!

Manatee Center News

D

id you know that the Manatee Observation and Education Center is still staffed several days a week and Saturdays by “roving naturalists?” These expert volunteers serve as guides to the center’s wonderful and completely accessible outdoor spaces, showing visitors how to spot manatees that frequent the water around the center, answering questions, and pointing out other nice features like the butterfly garden, the observation walkway and tower, and seagrass pond. The center is also offering guided kayak tours as a safe and healthy way to look for wildlife, get up close and personal

with mangroves, and learn about the Indian River Lagoon on an easy ninety-minute paddle led by a MOEC naturalist. The tours have been popular this September and will continue through the fall but register early because they book up quickly.

Tours start at Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. The fee for this program, per session, is $30 per person and includes kayak, paddle, and safety gear (state park entrance fee of $4– $6 per car not included). Registration is required. Wildlife Guide Manatees

Manatees, often called sea cows, are peaceful, lumbering ocean creatures that are always a treat to see. These gentle giants are vegetarians and love warm water. Manatees are protected and need our care for survival. Look but don’t touch. Never feed or approach them. Boaters must take extra care. The most common cause of injury to manatees comes from boat propellers. When fishing, reel in your line when a manatee is near. Find out more about these wonderful creatures at the The Manatee Observation & Education Center in Fort Pierce and enjoy their observation area. Round Island Park in Vero Beach and Sebastian Inlet State Park in Sebastian are also great places to spot manatees.

Dolphins

Florida is home to several species of dolphins, and the most common is the bottlenose dolphin.

Adults are typically six to 12 feet and their young may be less than a foot long. Dolphins give live birth in the spring and summer months and it is not uncommon to see the babies swimming closely alongside their mothers in the Indian River Lagoon.

Dolphin calves nurse for up to 24 months and usually stay with their mothers for an average of three years. Dolphins live both inshore and offshore so they can be observed almost anywhere along the beach and the Indian River Lagoon but there are an estimated 300 resident bottlenose dolphins that live in the lagoon year-round. It is always a thrill to see them frolicking and fishing in our waters.

Sea Turtles

The Treasure Coast and surrounding beaches make up the largest and most significant sea turtle nesting sites in the country. Leatherback turtles are the first to arrive in early spring with Loggerheads following in April through July, and green turtles in late May through October. Sea turtles lay and bury their eggs on our beaches at night. After about two months, the hatchlings, as a group, make their way to the water’s edge following the light of the moon.

Various groups offer beach walks to safely and legally observe nesting turtles. During hatchling season, the public can attend “turtle digs” where hatched nests are examined and documented by local experts. Sea turtles are protected and some are endangered so it is illegal to harass or interfere in any way with nests, nesting turtles or hatchlings.

Turn off all beach facing lights during hatchling season so the little ones don’t get disoriented as they make their way to the ocean. Never approach a nesting female and please, leave nothing on the beach except your footprints.

Florida Panthers

Florida panthers are large, light brown cats with a white muzzle, belly and chest. Their tails, ears and snout have black markings. While they are a unique subspecies of Puma concolor (also known as mountain lion, cougar, or puma), you’ll know the Florida Panther by its unique crooked tale and patch of fur on its back. Although most panthers are found south of Lake Okeechobee, they have been documented throughout the state. Florida Panthers are critically endangered and are the last of their subspecies still surviving in the eastern United States. Today there are less than 200 left in the wild. If you see a Florida panther, keep your distance and don’t harass, but be sure to report the sighting to 1-888-404-FWCC.

Bobcats

Are you one of the many that happened to catch the viral photo of the bobcat dragging a shark out of the surf in Vero Beach in 2015? Bobcats are alive and well on the Treasure Coast and widely distributed throughout Florida in deep forest, swamps, and hammock land. The bobcat is about twice the size of a domestic cat and has long legs, large paws and a short, or bobbed, tail. Bobcat sightings are often mistaken for panthers as they are the only other predatory “big cats” native to Florida.

Though they are abundant, bobcats are stealthy and secretive so catching a glimpse of these beautiful animals is a rare gift.

Alligators

Florida is famous for many things, not the least of which is an abundant American Alligator population. Alligator observation opportunities are some of the most sought after experiences by visitors and residents alike. Treasure Coast populations reside mostly in fresh bodies of water and marsh areas, and the safest way to see them is with a licensed tour operator. We respect and appreciate our alligators. They are an important part of the Florida’s environment and play a valuable role in the ecology of our wetlands. Alligators are apex predators that help keep other aquatic animal populations in balance, so coexistence is essential.

But they are dangerous animals and, while serious injuries to humans are rare, it is wise to use extreme caution in their presence.

Never approach or feed an alligator under any circumstances. Swim only in designated areas and be sure to keep pets on a leash around fresh and brackish waters.

lorida's Treasure Coast is home to a multitude of bird species and part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Birding is fun! Use this handy checklist to learn about and keep track of birds that you are certain to see while exploring the area.

Roseate Spoonbill

Sometimes mistaken for a flamingo, this gregarious wading bird is easily recognized for its bright pink plumage and big spoon shaped bill.

There is a growing population of these beauties on the Treasure Coast due to rising water levels in the Everglades. Best seen around inland freshwater wetlands.

Snail Kite

This medium-sized bird of prey feeds almost exclusively on apple snails and, in the U.S., is found only in Florida. The species is locally endangered due to prolonged drought which affects its primary food source. Lucky observers may get a glimpse at inland marshlands and lakes.

Wood Stork

This hefty wading bird sports a football shaped body, scaly featherless head and long curved bill that are dead giveaways to its Jurassic ancestry.

Their plumage is mostly white with black tail and wing feathers. They roost in trees and hang out around brackish wetlands, ponds and lakes.

Great Blue Heron

The largest of the North American Herons. At an average of four feet tall with a wingspan of around six feet, they are magnificent to see in flight. Named for their blue-gray plumage they have yellow bills and black head feathers. They adapt to both salt and freshwater environments and are abundant along the Indian River Lagoon.

Sandhill Crane

Florida is home to two species of these enormous cranes which stand around four feet tall. The Greater visits from the north in the winter and the Lesser is a year-round resident. Almost always seen in pairs, they are gray in color with dark red crowns. Residents stick mostly around freshwater ponds and lakes.

Osprey

These large raptors can look like juvenile bald eagles with their white bellies and variegated brown underwings. They are actually a hawk found around salt water and feed primarily on fish which can commonly be seen clutched in their talons. Their nests are big stick structures often built on poles, channel markers and dead trees over open water.

Great Egret

This is the snow-white version of the Great Blue Heron. Other than color they’re nearly identical size and habitat and can observed in many of the same places. Some smaller birds can be mistaken for the Snowy Egret, but their yellow bills and black feet make them identifiable.

White Pelican

These migratory, all white pelicans, are twice the size of their brown cousins and breathtaking to behold. They are often referred to as the “original snowbirds” for their snow-white color and seasonal arrivals and departures. See them in large groups along the lagoon waterfront in Sebastian.

Fall Fishing Forecast by Captain Mark Yanno

F

all is the most exciting time of year to fish in east central Florida. The heat of summer begins to fade, but most importantly the annual mullet run takes place. Near the end of October millions of mullet migrate south and bring with them a wagon train of predators such as tarpon, snook, and sharks along our beaches.

Anyone can fish from the beach and hook these fish, but at least 300 yards of 30-pound test line is recommended to land them. Use live mullet or mullet imitating lures and flies for mind blowing action.

The migrating mullet will also pour into the inlets well into November, with snook, tarpon, and big redfish taking center stage.

The tarpon will begin to leave and move south when the water gets into the low seventies. At Sebastian inlet the flounder move in from the ocean to spawn starting in October. Live baitfish or jigs are the preferred bait for these tasty flatfish.

Flounder fishing peaks in the inlet between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Fall tides will get higher, allowing easier access to backwater areas in the Lagoon.

As the water cools in November, trout and some redfish will move to the deeper edges of the flats and will take live shrimp and a variety of lures. Sheepshead, black drum, and snapper can be targeted with

live shrimp around any hard structure in the Lagoon or the inlets. Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and jacks will also be thick in the inlets.

As the water temperature dips below 70 degrees towards December, pompano move into the Lagoon and can also be found along the beach. Shrimp and small gigs are best for catching them in open areas. Colder water requires you to retrieve slower and seek out the warmest water you can find, regardless of your target species.

Fish deeper in the morning and then look for fish warming in the sun on the shallow flats later in the day. After three consecutive nights in the 40’s, the water gets very clear in the lagoon and begins some of the best sight fishing of the year for redfish.

Offshore trolling with ballyhoo can produce good catches of dolphin, wahoo, blackfin tuna, and sailfish in the fall season.

The best sailfish time of the year is usually just before Christmas. December is a great time of year for grouper fishing and is the last month before the four-month closed season. Whatever type of fishing you might be interested in, the autumn in our area can be nothing short of spectacular!
