Goodbye Hurricane Season, Hello Theatre Season!

Sunrise Theatre

The beautifully restored theatre in the Sunrise City has a spectacular lineup this season including that cute critter on the cover! America’s most beloved animal expert, Jack Hanna, brings his three-time Emmy Award-winning television series INTO THE WILD LIVE! back to the Sunrise Theatre stage in January. In this live show, prepare to be fascinated as Jungle Jack takes you into the wild with a spectacular array of incredible animals. Fans of all ages will enjoy Jack’s stories, from brushing a hippo’s teeth to eating with wombats, and see footage of his worldwide adventures, from the jungles of Rwanda to the savannas of Australia. He inspires with his passion and dedication to wildlife conservation. Around 15 animals are presented during this incredible live experience.

Sunrise opens its season this month with more than 30 performances booked through next spring including national touring shows, dance and ballet performances, musical

Vero Beach Theatre Guild

The Guild opened its 62nd season in July with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS which was a smashing success. But no worries if you missed it because VBTG has plenty of great entertainment planned for the rest of the season. November features Lerner & Loewe’s soaring musical CAMELOT followed in January by the Jones, Hope, Wooten comedy ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID. March 2020 will serve up a global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR. The season wraps up in May with MOONLIGHT & MAGNOLIAS, a hilarious and historically based look into the screenplay writing of “Gone with the Wind.” Back this year is an all new Apron Series lineup. “A Season with Arthur Miller” features three staged readings of Miller classics. The Crucible

Riverside Theatre

Riverside begins its 46th season in October with a musical journey through the 60’s, BEEHIVE, followed in January by the taphappy, tuneful THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE. A tribute to American playwright

Neil Simon follows with his Pulitzer Prizewinning play LOST IN YONKERS in February. Two very popular musical hits, the madcap LA CAGE AUX FOLLES and the romantic thriller THE BODY GUARD, conclude the season on the Stark Stage while two comedic plays fill the Waxlax Stage season, the uproarious THE 39 STEPS in January and very funny BAKERSFIELD MIST in March. Theatre-Go-Round

The Treasure Coast’s only live dinner theatre opened this past summer at Vero’s premier hotel, Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa with the wildly successful THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC- THE BEST OF ABBA and performances will continue through the end of November. TGR performers Beth McKenzie-Shestak, Greg Harris, Caitlin Harris and Brendan Wenger bring it with precision and perfect harmonies to sold out crowds and standing ovations at every performance. The thin 200 mile stretch of land on the Indian River Lagoon from just south of Flagler Beach to West Palm produces citrus that is so special that it has its own designation protected by the Federal Trade Commission. 1715 Spanish Fleet Artifacts

Nothing says “Treasure Coast” like real treasure! Named for the Spanish Treasure Fleet lost in a 1715 hurricane right off our shores, the region’s shipwrecks have and continue to produce a wealth of artifacts and coins. Numerous area dealers and museums offer a variety of authentic gold and silver coins from the fleet, often crafted pendants, bracelets, and earrings, and several even offer re-creations if the real deal isn’t in your budget. Other 1715 Fleet inspired gifts can include books and nautical artifacts.

Highwaymen Art

The legendary artistry of the Florida Highwaymen is a cornerstone of Florida culture. From the mid 1950’s to the 1980’s a group of 26 African American artists taught

by Alfred “Bean” Backus, created a body of work of more than 200,000 paintings reflecting authentic Florida landscape. Deemed unacceptable at the time by galleries, the artists sold the paintings door-to-door and from the trunks of their cars. Today many of the original works sell for as much as tens of thousands of dollars but there are still many more available at lower price points, as well as gift items and books featuring the works of A.E Backus and the original painters.

Artful Maps

Map artistry is growing in popularity and dare we say that our slice of Florida’s east coast produces some of the most interesting maps? For anyone with an affinity for the Treasure Coast, the opportunity to adorn their home with a beautiful hand-made map will surely be appreciated. Maps of the area’s shipwrecks are always a hit but there are also a growing number of local artists who create stunning artwork featuring the physical features of the seaside towns of Fort Pierce, Vero Beach, and Sebastian including renderings of the barrier island and the Indian River Lagoon.

Further Afield- Lake Okeechobee

T

reasure Coast beaches attract visitors from all over the world but sometimes a daytrip is a great way to round out the perfect vacation or stay-cation. Lake Okeechobee, often referred to as Florida’s Inland Sea, is a short trip from our area and well worth the visit. It’s the second largest freshwater lake in the lower 48 states and shared by five counties. At 730 square miles wide, Okeechobee means “Big Water” in the Seminole dialect.

The lake was formed around 6,000 years ago and is one of our nation’s greatest natural resources. Lake ‘O is home to abundant wildlife including fish, alligators, turtles and birds. The bass fishery and bird watching opportunities are considered world-class. It is a stopover for millions of migratory birds and is a critical area for the

endangered Everglade Snail Kite.

Recreational opportunities are plentiful on Lake Okeechobee. There are guided fishing and hunting trips, airboat tours, birdwatching tours, hiking trails, rodeos and more. There are also some unique and well-known festivals around the area that promise a completely different and authentic experience from those on the coast.

Nothing says Old Florida like swamp cabbage, gator tail and armadillo races! All of that and more are offered at the Annual Swamp Cabbage Festival. For 53 years the town of Labelle has hosted this one-ofkind festival the last weekend in February along the Caloosahatchee River. Swamp cabbage is a pioneer food that comes from the bud of Florida's state tree, the cabbage palm.

The Speckled Perch Festival is the oldest celebration in Okeechobee, dating back to 1965. At that time the festival honored the fishing industry with a parade and fish fry in the park during the height of the tourist season and the tradition continues today.

The festival is held annually in March in Flagler Park in the heart of Okeechobee and includes a car show and rodeo.

The relative newcomer is the Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, also held in March. The four-day extravaganza takes place in Sunshine Grove which is in the woods about ten miles north of the lake.

It’s a camping and glamping festival with a wildly diverse lineup of music that drew more than 100,000 people from across the country in its first three years.

Fishing, boating, birding, hiking, hunting, camping and cool festivals are among the best excuses to go further afield and explore Lake Okeechobee.

Treasure Coast Birding Guide

lorida's Treasure Coast is home to a multitude of bird species and part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Birding is fun! Use this handy checklist to learn about and keep track of birds that you are certain to see while exploring the area.

Roseate Spoonbill

Sometimes mistaken for a flamingo, this gregarious wading bird is easily recognized for its bright pink plumage and big spoon shaped bill.

There is a growing population of these beauties on the Treasure Coast due to rising water levels in the Everglades. Best seen around inland freshwater wetlands.

Snail Kite

This medium-sized bird of prey feeds almost exclusively on apple snails and, in the U.S., is found only in Florida. The species is locally endangered due to prolonged drought which affects its primary food source. Lucky observers may get a glimpse at inland marshlands and lakes.

Wood Stork

This hefty wading bird sports a football shaped body, scaly featherless head and long curved bill that are dead giveaways to its Jurassic ancestry.

Their plumage is mostly white with black tail and wing feathers. They roost in trees and hang out around brackish wetlands, ponds and lakes.

Great Blue Heron

The largest of the North American Herons. At an average of four feet tall with a wingspan of around six feet, they are magnificent to see in flight. Named for their blue-gray plumage they have yellow bills and black head feathers. They adapt to both salt and freshwater environments and are abundant along the Indian River Lagoon.

Sandhill Crane

Florida is home to two species of these enormous cranes which stand around four feet tall. The Greater visits from the north in the winter and the Lesser is a year-round resident. Almost always seen in pairs, they are gray in color with dark red crowns. Residents stick mostly around freshwater ponds and lakes.

Osprey

These large raptors can look like juvenile bald eagles with their white bellies and variegated brown underwings. They are actually a hawk found around salt water and feed primarily on fish which can commonly be seen clutched in their talons. Their nests are big stick structures often built on poles, channel markers and dead trees over open water.

Great Egret

This is the snow-white version of the Great Blue Heron. Other than color they’re nearly identical size and habitat and can observed in many of the same places. Some smaller birds can be mistaken for the Snowy Egret, but their yellow bills and black feet make them identifiable.

Anhinga

This aquatic bird is sometimes called a “snake bird” for its long slithery neck or “water turkey” for its turkey like tail feathers. It stalks its prey underwater and then strikes a distinctive pose at the water’s edge to dry out. They inhabit shallow freshwater and can be most easily observed around inland marshes and ponds.

A New Way to Enjoy the Sunrise City

I

f you spend any time in Fort Pierce, you’re likely to have seen the shiny bikes lined up outside of the St. Lucie Aquarium, Marina Square and a handful of other locations. The Bike Share program, introduced through a partnership between the City of Fort Pierce and Zagster, a company operating micro-mobility shares nationwide, has been a hit in the Sunrise City since February of 2018.

According to the city, “The bike share program has been successful by filling transit gaps, providing connections between the parks and beaches, creating recreation for residents and visitors, and putting key destinations on the map.” At the end of August, 2019, there were more than 2,754 users and 5,248 rides since the launch of the program.

But if peddling is not your thing, Zagster has now added e-scooters to the fleet, a first for the company’s operations in Florida right here on the Treasure Coast. If you’ve ever ridden one of these you know it’s less work and way more exciting, especially in the Florida heat.

How fun to see the sights of both historic Downtown Fort Pierce as well as the beach side, zipping around on an electric scooter that does all the work for you!

“The Treasure Coast continues to be a vacation

destination for visitors from around the world and now we’ve added a new mode of transportation that will enable them to move more freely around our great community,” said Linda Hudson, Mayor of Fort Pierce. “We’re going to have a lot more seasonal visitors in a few months.

We’ll have some experience with it, and I hope a lot of people try it. It’s turning people into kids again, and how wonderful is that?”

Zagster handles all operations for the scooter shares out of its local warehouse in Fort Pierce. Local staff collect and recharge the scooters throughout the operating hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., seven days a week. Residents and visitors can rent one of more than 200 currently deployed dockless scooters from 17 locations on the island and 19 locations in the downtown area. It costs $1 to unlock a scooter and 15 cents per minute to ride, and riders are only charged while the scooter is operating. So, a stop for lunch, a walk through a park or a romp on the beach doesn’t add to the cost. The program is managed through a downloadable smartphone app, barcode scanning and GPS. The scooters are capable of speeds of up to 15 miles per hour and helmets are recommended. For safety, there are noride zones including Indian River Drive, the Seaway Bridge, and sidewalks. Once a rider enters an “off limits area,” they will be sent a notification. If a rider tries to end their trip in an offlimits area, they will not be able to end their ride, and will be asked to return to a permitted usage area.

Joyful Entertainment at the Centennial Finale Day

T

he Vero Centennial Celebration Finale will be held Saturday, October 26 in Historic Downtown Vero Beach. Events begin at 9 am at the Parade Reviewing stand at the intersection of 14th Avenue and 21st Street, hopping with live music while the crowd awaits the arrival of the Centennial Parade down 14th Avenue from the Vero Beach High School staging area.

Enjoy this glorious fall community day and make new memories together. Informational booths, historic displays at the old train station, food, drink and music in and around Pocahontas Park and more are planned.

Morning festivities will kick off a mix of lively DJ music to entertain parade goers. As the parade leaves downtown, everyone will make their way to Pocahontas Park where the remaining festivities will be held.

First up on stage is the Jordan Thomas Odyssey (JTO) Band ready to entertain for your listening and dancing pleasure. JTO have been performing around Vero Beach to rave reviews and features a group of six musicians on piano, saxophone, drums, guitar and bass.

Featured vocalist Carla Holbrook will take the audience on a journey through the decades from the standards, to Motown, to rock with two different time segments during the day; 12:15– 1:00 pm and 1:45–3:00 pm.

Audiences will be serenaded throughout the day by the Vero Beach Theatre Guild’s popular

traveling performance group, Guild on the Go. Under its director, Larry Strauss, Guild on the Go features great local singing talent and will perform throughout the day featuring Broadway show tunes and patriotic songs. Performance times will be 1:00–1:30 pm; 2:15–2:45 pm and 4:30–5:00 pm.

Sing and dance along with BeatleBeat, known internationally as the world’s most fun and entertaining tribute show. The band includes an all-star cast with members from the original Broadway and touring cast of Beatlemania and The British Invasion from Disney World’s EPCOT. BeatleBeat captures the music, energy and magic of a Beatles concert with authentic outfits of different eras. Performances are at 3:45–4:30 pm and concluding the day from 5:00–6:30 pm.

With their famous black “Ed Sullivan” suits, BeatleBeat spans the Fab Four’s touring era with classic hits like “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” “Help!” and many more early favorites! They will also perform classic favorites from the “Summer of Love” including “Sgt. Pepper,” “With a Little Help from My Friends” and “Yellow Submarine,” just to mention a few!

Fall Fishing Report

T

he Indian River Lagoon has 687 species of fish, giving it the highest diversity of fish of any body of water in North America. Throughout the year some species stay year-round and others move in and out, but two thing are consistent.

The scenery in the Lagoon is spectacular with dolphins, birds, turtles, and manatees; and there is always a place to get out of the wind when it is blowing.

Fall is the most exciting time of year to fish in east central Florida. The heat of summer begins to fade, but most importantly the annual mullet run takes place. At the end of September millions of mullet migrate south and bring with them a wagon train of predators such as tarpon, snook, and sharks along our beaches. Anyone can fish from the beach and hook these fish, but at least 300 yards of 30-pound test line is recommended to land them. Use live mullet or mullet imitating lures and flies for mind blowing action.

The migrating mullet will also pour into the inlets through October and into November, with snook, tarpon, and big redfish taking center stage. The tarpon will begin to leave and move south when the water gets into the low seventies.

At Sebastian inlet the flounder move in from the ocean to spawn starting in October. Live baitfish or jigs are the preferred bait for these tasty flatfish. Flounder fishing peaks in the inlet between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The cooler water of fall will bring some of the best flats fishing of the year in the Indian

River Lagoon as large schools of finger mullet trigger a vertical feeding frenzy. Fish the bait pods or mangrove shorelines with live mullet or lures that imitate them, for snook, redfish, trout, jacks, and a multitude of other species. Fish are feeding day and night on mullet. As always, where birds are feeding or baitfish are fleeing, you will find fish.

Fall tides will get higher, allowing easier access to backwater areas in the Lagoon.

As the water cools in November, trout and some redfish will move to the deeper edges of the flats and will take live shrimp and a variety of lures. Sheepshead, black drum, and snapper can be targeted with live shrimp around any hard structure in the Lagoon or the inlets. Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and jacks will also be thick in the inlets.

As the water temperature dip below 70 degrees towards December, pompano move into the Lagoon and can also be found along the beach.

Shrimp and small gigs are best for catching them in open areas. Colder water requires you to retrieve slower and seek out the warmest water you can find, regardless of your target species.

Fish deeper in the morning and then look for fish warming in the sun on the shallow flats later in the day. After three consecutive nights in the 40’s, the water gets very clear in the Lagoon and begins some of the best sight fishing of the year for redfish.

Finally, offshore trolling with ballyhoo can produce good catches of dolphin, wahoo, blackfin tuna, and sailfish in the fall season.

The best sailfish time of the year is usually just before Christmas. December is a great time of year for grouper fishing and is the last month before the four-month closed season. Whatever type of fishing you might be interested in, the fall season in our area can be nothing short of spectacular!
