This Fall our area is brimming with performing arts, entertainment and cultural events that are simply not to be missed. That is why this issue is focusing on the arts… and wine because we think wine pairs well with everything! Sunrise and Riverside Theatres have fabulous seasons lined up with something for everybody. Ballet Vero will be treating us to an extraordinary performance of a holiday tradition and local community and school theatres continue to offer top notch affordable entertainment for the whole family. “The Sunrise Theatre in historic downtown Fort Pierce is excited to announce the Broadway and Beyond on 2nd Street series with seven fabulous shows including One Night in Memphis, a Chorus Line, Gobsmacked, Charlie Brown Christmas, and Rhythm of the Dance.” exclaimed Anne W. There are literally dozens of shows scheduled for the upcoming season. Many are one-night only special performances by legends in the music industry. Others

highlight stand up comedians, tribute bands, dance productions, and children’s plays.

Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach produces Broadway musicals, contemporary plays, and children’s theatre on three stages as it enters is 44th season. “We are thrilled by the variety of the shows selected,” said Oscar Sales, Marketing Director for Riverside Theatre.

“I am personally looking forward to Mamma Mia as it showcases the music of ABBA, a band I enjoyed growing up in the 70’s and 80’s.” Other performances include Hank Williams, Lost Highway, Million Dollar Quartet, Mystery of Edwin Drood, Lombardi, Gypsy and Buyer Cellar. Allen Cornell, CEO of Riverside Theatre explains the artistic philosophy behind the shows. “The work you see on our stages is created by some of the theatre industry's finest artists. Supported by our talented resident staff, our creative teams bring their own special voice to the

work. From an artistic standpoint, we are not interested in replicating a particular show that you may have seen on the Great White Way. Rather, we challenge ourselves to find a new light to familiar works.”

For an even more localized theatrical experience, be sure to attend one or all of the Vero Beach Theatre Guild’s new shows. “As the Guild’s newly elected President, I’m honored to be at the helm as we launch our 60th Anniversary Season,” said Jon Putzke. “Come out and see your friends, neighbors and business associates as they take the stage and help steer the Guild in a new direction!” This year’s lineup begins with The Lady with All the Answers followed by Little Shop of Horrors and Lend Me a Tenor.

Across town the Theatre Go Round has live dinner theatre at its best. “We’re celebrating our 10th Anniversary and we have one of the most diverse lineups of shows this year” said Jon Putzke, who is also owner of the area’s only dinner theatre company. Enjoy dinner at the Quilted Giraffe while being serenaded to the sounds of Dionne Warwick, Neil Diamond, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Sinatra done in four-part harmony.

Vero Beach Opera is pleased to announce collaboration between VBO and Atlantic Classical Orchestra, two outstanding Indian River County nonprofit performing arts organizations according to Joan Ortega-Cowan, President of the Vero Beach Opera.

Dance is a universal language and there is nothing more magical and elegant than ballet. Ballet Vero Beach will perform Nutcracker on the Indian River at the Vero Beach Performing Arts Center on Dec. 29-30 giving viewers a local backdrop to this holiday classic. “Everything about this production is a love letter to the beauty of our natural surroundings and I am certain it will become our area’s newest tradition,” said Adam Schnell, CEO of Ballet of Vero Beach. Additional ballet performances are scheduled for January, February and March.

Page Howell, Vero Beach High School Bands Director, is excited about this year’s lineup of performances. “One of the highlights from this coming year is the 25th Annual Celebration of the Red, White and Blue Concert in March.

The patriotic concert will feature guest conductors and a look back at the past 25 years of concerts. And in February you don’t want to miss our spring musical, Annie.”

If the reality of politics and economics is more your style, Riverside Theatre’s Distinguished Lecturer Series enters its 20th season in 2018 and welcomes the Right Honourable David Cameron, as one of the season’s four guest lecturers on Feb 25th. Frannie Atchinson and Debbi Peniston, DLS Co-chairs, reveal that the other speakers include Secretary Ash Carter on January 22, Senator Phil Gramm on Feb. 19th and Ambassador Christopher Hill, former ambassador to South Korea on March 12th. These lectures sell out quickly so reserve your seats early.

Get Artsy by the Sea

mbrace your inner painter, designer or sculptor and take in some of the amazing arts culture in our area. Fine arts in Vero Beach have flourished in recent years thanks in part to some very supportive organizations including Main Street Vero Beach, Vero Beach Art Cub and most notably the Cultural Council of Indian River County.

According to Cultural Council Director, Barbara Hoffman, “Americans Value the Arts. Eighty-two percent of Americans believe arts & culture are important to local businesses and the economy. Eighty-seven percent feel they are important to their quality of life.”

“The American public appreciates the value that the arts bring to their community.

While 63% believe the arts ‘lift me up beyond everyday experiences,’ 64% feel pure pleasure to experience and participate in the arts, and 73% say that arts are a positive experience in a troubled world.”

So, if you need a lift beyond every day experiences and a reason to feel positive in a troubled world, then you are in the right place at the right time when spending the season in our wonderful seaside town.

The House of Art, Culture & Design is one of this year’s most exciting new events. A creation of the Cultural Council of Indian River County, this is a four-day designer show house event to be held in Riomar’s newest enclave, Old Oak Lane.

Local designers will transform a newly built home into a haven of sumptuous décor reflecting and celebrating the Vero Beach lifestyle.

Utilizing local vendors, the area’s leading designers will transform the interior and grounds of the Show House.

There will also be a classic Boutique House featuring an array of items for sale by local vendors and arts members of the Cultural Council. The Opening Night Gala is sure to be the highlight of this spectacular event and will be hosted in an elegant pavilion on the grounds. The pavilion will also be the venue for lunches, teas, wine tastings, performances and presentations throughout the entire event.

The Vero Beach Art Club is another remarkable organization representing over 450 members from the Treasure Coast and beyond. Now in its 81st year the VBAC not only offers unique networking opportunities for artists of all levels, but also puts on 17 shows and exhibits annually.

This season VBAC kicks off with Art in the Park, a local favorite held at Humiston Park featuring fine arts and crafts. This show provides the perfect opportunity to interact with the fine artists and craft artisans to buy

beautiful work directly from the artists.

Other shows include the "Art Trail" which is a guided tour of working studios, "Artini," a fun soirée at the Marriott Springhill Suites, and "Art By The Sea," a judged show held at the Vero Beach Museum of Art. Don't miss the ever popular "Art Under the Oaks."

It’s a 3-day annual juried fine art show held in March at Riverside Park in Vero Beach presenting works of over 200 artists from all over the United States and beyond. This show offers over $22,000 in cash awards presented to the best in eight separate categories. This premier event ranks among the top of its kind in the country and draws crowds numbering more than 80,000. Cheers to Dignity and Respect

“It was the words from Matt Kramer’s article in Wine Spectator that inspired the idea back in 2010,” recollects Bob Van Dyk when asked how the wine was born. Raised in the family’s first nursing facility since 3 months of age,

Bob Van Dyk served as the “entertainment director” for the residents as he wheeled himself about the halls in his rolling walker. As a result, he has always cared about the well-being and dignity of the aging generations; admiring first- hand the work his father and entire family did to make life for the elderly as comfortable and rewarding as it could be.

After a lovely lunch at Quail’s new hotel, Mr. Van Dyk happened upon Varietals and More. Currently, it is the exclusive retailer of Van Dyk Family Wines; located at 54 Royal Palm Pointe in Vero Beach. This boutique wine shop was the only place Bob and Elizabeth felt

comfortable selling their wine locally because they felt confident the owner, Rob, would be able to truly share their story of these fine wines ranging in price from $30$60 and pair them well with customers who wanted a wine experience while still supporting a cause.

When asked what “Florida Food” would pair best with their sensational Sauvignon Blanc, they both agreed “a crisp salad topped with mandarin oranges and a grilled piece of grouper would make for a perfect afternoon lunch.”

Wine Pairings for Florida Cuisine

re you a Florida Transplant Wine Lover? You want to experience quintessential Floridian cuisine but you might not be sure how to pair it with your favorite wines. Well we’ve gone to the local experts for some advice and we are grapeful for their insight and suggestions. Here’s hoping you will be too!

Stone Crab Claws Stone Crab Season runs from October 15 through May 15. Stone crab is the ultimate ecofriendly way to enjoy seafood since only the oversized claw is harvested leaving the critter intact to grow another. The succulent nutritious meat is considered quite a delicacy and deserves a carefully selected wine. Rob Wayne of Varietals and More recommends Domaine De La Rossignole Sancerre, a French Sauvignon Blanc. For an alternative and more festive approach he also suggests Chateau Bligny Grand Brut Reserve Champagne.

Fried Gator Tail What do you get when you cross a chicken with a grouper? Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! Alligator meat is both weird and delicious and is gaining popularity as a delicacy in some fancy restaurants. Wine pairing with the meat from this beast is a “thing” now but the rules fly out the door a bit on this dish. Rob’s first pick is a red Siduri Willamette which is an Oregon Pinot Noir. Gary Roberts of Summer Crush Vineyard & Winery also takes the red approach but with one of their signature wines. ‘Rated Arrr’ is a semi dry table wine crafted from the muscadine grape blended with a dry red vinifera grape.

Spiny Lobster Tail It’s a frenzy out there when these scrumptious crustaceans come into season. Whether you braved the dive and caught some by hand or did it the oldfashioned way by going to the store and buying them, you’ll want to make sure you pick the best wine to compliment the firm meat and the drawn butter. Marco Amato of Vincent’s Ristorante & Pizzeria features small production wines and recommends Chardonnay Cortaccia from Alto Adige, Italy for its refreshing aromatic sense of white fruit and a hint of lemon which rounds off any lobster dish nicely.

Conch Fritters These deep-fried nuggets of pure gastronomical joy are Floribbean cuisine rooted in the Bahamas.

Taken from queen conch, this sweet high-protein shell fish is fried in a savory batter with a combination of peppery seasonings and vegetables including green pepper, tomato and onion. Tommy Allegretta, owner of soon to open Vino Royal on Royal Palm Point, is adamant about California Sauvignon Blanc as a great choice for any fried seafood dish. Their flavors are a range of fruits from green apples to grapefruit making them a delightful pairing with tender seafood that is deep or pan fried. Our friends at Summer Crush recommend their popular Beach Nut, a crisp semi-dry white wine that pairs well with fried foods.

Key Lime Pie Floridians are smitten with this one of a kind citrusy dessert. While the toppings and crusts may vary from whipped cream or meringue to graham cracker or traditional pastry, its authenticity is validated in the filling. Sweetened condensed milk and real key limes, not the Persian grocery store variety, are essential to any self-respecting Key Lime Pie. Gary with Summer Crush swears by his Party Wave Pineapple, almost a dessert itself. Rob at Varietals offers another festive option which always pairs well with something as fun as Key Lime Pie- Gloria Ferrer Blanc de Blanc Sparkling Wine from California.

BG Vero Beach Polo and BG Florida State Parks Bring World Class Polo, Parks and Beaches to Indian River County

W

here else in the world can you go surfing in the morning, eat brunch at an ocean front grill and enjoy a polo match just 20 minutes across town in the afternoon? Vero Beach might just be the only place that’s possible! It’s a synergy like no other brought to you by BG Management.

This past summer BG Management took over the marina, campground, rental and food concessions within Sebastian Inlet State Park. Big changes are being made to welcome local residents and visitors alike to one of the state’s most diverse and beautiful playgrounds. The marina has been renovated with new docks and now has a complete fleet of brand new kayaks, paddleboards and pontoon boats available for rent. The BG Surfside Grill & Adventures is morphing into an oceanfront-gathering place suitable for large groups and weddings in addition to providing healthy, hearty

breakfasts and lunches. There’s a fully stocked bait shop for the fishermen casting their lines off the jetty and a gift shop to pick up essentials for your day at the beach. It won’t be long before the BG Surfside Grill & Adventures will also have surfboards for rent so you can test your skill at catching a wave!

Families with young children will enjoy spending part of the day at the cove where children can wade in the water, scoop up hermit crabs and seahorses and interact with the resident manatees.

A rock jetty protects the cove creating a pool of calm, shallow water that’s a safe place to play, float and swim without fear of rip currents or tidal undertow.

So this weekend why not take a drive up to Sebastian Inlet State where you can fish, swim, wade and boat. Then head over to BG Vero Beach Polo for an exhilarating polo match and divot stomp!

Blue Cypress Recreation Area a Sure Bet

I

f you’ve never enjoyed an airboat tour through the Blue Cypress Recreation Area you’re in for what most first-timers consider a treat that far exceeds their expectations.

This is no swamp and, oh the things you’ll see! The beauty of this area is the interesting result of the intentional flooding of what used to be wetlands and farm property used for everything from sugarcane and citrus to cattle ranching and horse racing dating back to the 1890’s.

When you tour the 2,800 acres of the freshwater marshlands, you are gliding across what locals refer to as the Garcia ranch.

Manny Garcia, a Vero man rumored to have enjoyed the occasional horse racing bet, once raised cattle and horses there and even built a race track. Today most tour guides will take you across parts of that track and point it out.

The Blue Cypress Recreation Area, located l.15 miles north of SR 60 on CR 512, is the headwaters of Florida’s longest river flowing over 300 miles north to Jacksonville.

In the late 1970’s the St. Johns River Water Management District began efforts to reclaim and restore water to the original wetlands to reduce flooding and create habitat for scores of wildlife including the

endangered snail kite. Among the first of its many land purchases was the Garcia Tract.

The restoration project also improved water quality and reduced diversions of fresh water into the Indian River Lagoon.

Fall Fishing Forecast

O

ctober marks the transition into the fall weather patterns along the Treasure Coast. You can expect temperatures to begin to cool down somewhat into more comfortable days to enjoy the outdoors.

Water temperatures will begin to slowly cool off as well. This year has brought us lots of rain and Hurricane Irma so far.

Irma was not kind to Florida but this time of year provides great weather and hungry fish. It's a fantastic time to be fishing!

The fall mullet run will continue to dominate the area as large schools of finger mullet fill the beaches, inlets and rivers of the area. You can expect lots of big fish to be feeding on them both day and night.

Snook fishing will be best during the night hours on the higher ends of the tides. Live finger mullet, croakers and pigfish will be the best live baits to use. DOA Terror Eyz, Bait Busters and feather jigs will be good artificial lures to use for snook. Try around the jetties, turning basin and bridges as well as many of the deeper docks around the river. Lighted docks are especially productive when fishing at night.

Redfish has continued to be a wonderful fishery for us again this year. Each year has seen their population increase and many anglers have enjoyed the experience of fishing a large school of reds this year.

October will continue to be a productive

month for those who seek redfish on the flats. DOA shrimp or CAL grub tails are two of the best choices for redfish along with a variety of live and cut baits. The west shoreline south of Fort Pierce is always a good area when looking for redfish.

The trout bite will be good this month.

Get out early with a top water lure for some exciting action on the river. Switch to a DOA shrimp or CAL jerk bait later in the mornings. Harbor Branch, Queen's Cove and Middle Cove are all great areas to fish for trout around the Treasure Coast.

Look for some sheephead, black drum and snapper around the bridges, docks and channel edges. The surf will be alive with jacks, snook, bluefish and other predators, which will all be chasing the bait schools along the beach.

Snook season has been in full swing for the past month and anglers are always looking for that slot fish to take home.

Beaches, jetties, bridges and mangroves are all popular areas to seek snook. Top water lures, DOA Bait Busters, CAL Airheads and live baits are all great ways to target snook. It's an exciting time to fish along the Treasure Coast! Have fun and get out fishing soon!

Photographing the Moon

Three easy steps for photographing the full moon!

T

here are eight phases of the moon; however, the most photographed is the FULL MOON phase. There are a few factors to consider in photographing the moon and here you’ll find 3 easy steps on how to best prepare to photograph the full moon.

1. Planning If your interest is photographing the full moon, then the best TIME to photograph the full moon would be the day prior, the day of, and the day after the full moon phase. You can check the Old Farmer’s Almanac on-line to find out the time and date of the rising full moon in your area.

Having an additional subject, other than just the moon itself, or scene included in your photograph helps enhance the composition of the image and frame the shot. I recommend scouting your location a day or two before you plan shoot to see where the moon will be rising in relation to the subject or scene that you have chosen.

If you want the scene lit and the moon showing some detail, then the best time would be the DAY BEFORE the actual full moon. If you wait until the actual day of the full moon or the day after, the surrounding background will be quite a bit darker when obtaining the best exposure to show detail in the moon itself.

2. Equipment Camera – A DSLR (Digital-Single Lens Reflex) or a good point and shoot with an “OPTICAL” zoom of 15x or 20x and above would be optimum. Do not use the DIGITAL ZOOM option on the lens.

Some point and shoot models may have “Superzoom” or “Hyperzoom”. Check the manufacturer’s manual to see what the focal length equivalent may be to a DSLR. A focal length of 300mm or greater would be best to obtain a larger moon image in the viewfinder frame.

Tripod – Use a steady tripod or set your camera on a sturdy base to avoid camera

shake. The longer the focal length of the lens the more it will magnify the amount of camera movement in the final image.

Cable Release – A cable release or some other means to remotely trigger the camera’s shutter without touching the camera also helps in obtaining a sharper image of the moon. Also, remove any lens filter(s) to avoid light bounce back between the filter and the lens element.

3. Exposure For full moon exposures, it is recommended to use the 'LOONEY 11' concept, a basic method for estimating correct exposures without a light meter.

Basic exposure settings in MANUAL exposure mode would be as follows: Aperture: Set your aperture to f/11 for FULL MOON, f/8 for Half Moon, f/5.6 for

quarter moon and f/4 for crescent moon Shutter Speed: Set your shutter speed to equal your ISO i.e. 1/125 on cameras with a base ISO of 100, and to 1/250 on cameras with a base ISO of 200.

Lens Focus: Set your lens to manual focus (either through a switch on the lens or on the camera) and set your focus to infinity or focus the moon through the viewfinder or live view.

White Balance: AWB (Automatic White Balance) or if you prefer to set your white balance manually; DAYLIGHT tends to give you a warmer moon and TUNGSTEN will render a cooler moon.

Finally, have fun and experiment, whichever phase of the moon you choose to shoot!
