Our theatres and entertainment venues all have a bountiful lineup with something for everyone. For nature lovers check out our new Treasure Coast Birding Guide; grab your binoculars and camera and go birding! The annual mullet run will peak over the next month or so. Read about this fantastic migration and head down to the beach on a calm morning to enjoy. Vero Beach kicks off its Centennial celebrations this month, so look for special events and a historical piece in each issue throughout the year. The holidays are around the corner and we have put together a gift guide with unique offerings from our local retailers. Shop small and local whenever and wherever you can because these businesses are the economic heartbeat of our seaside towns. Keep Calm and Go to the Theatre

oday’s world can be a noisy place, and many of us are seeking ways to check out and chill out even if it’s just for a little while. Thankfully there is the theatre! Treasure Coast entertainment venues have spectacular performances in store this season offering theatre fans a welcome retreat.

The Sunrise Theatre in historic downtown Fort Pierce has 26 shows lined up for the whole year. In addition to a multitude of live concerts by national touring celebrities and tribute artists, Sunrise has some unique performances on tap. In November The DRUMLine Live Holiday Spectacular takes you on an unforgettable musical journey featuring dazzling vocalists and talented musicians coupled with energetic choreography and spectacular lighting. Another notable holiday show is back by popular demand; The Midtown Men - Holiday Hits features 4 Stars from the original Broadway cast of Jersey Boys! December’s production of The Nutcracker will be performed by the National Ballet Theatre of

Odessa from Ukraine. Another dance performance in December will feature the South Florida Dance Company in A Christmas Carol.

Speaking of dance, Ballet Vero is back for its second year with its stunning The Nutcracker on the Indian River. This year, in honor of the Vero Beach Centennial, some of the action has been moved to the year 1919 when Vero Beach was founded. The ballet's heroine takes a holiday journey from New York to Florida, and Fifth Avenue Mansions, Grand Central Station, and rail cars become settings. Instead of the traditional second act featuring candy characters and ethnic dances, she dreams of the shores of the Indian River Lagoon and is entertained by all manner of local flora and fauna.

Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach unveils its 45th season with a broad spectrum of theatrical choices, from the recent to the golden age of the Broadway musical. The Main Stage will open with Leiber and Stroller’s Smokey Joe’s Café featuring the chart-topping songs from the fifties and sixties. Then there are the backto-back productions of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mega-hit, Evita, followed by one of the all-time great favorites of the musical stage, Lerner and Loewe’s, My Fair Lady. For those who love a good play, there’s a little jewel about finding the spark of love near the end of life’s

rainbow, in Joe DiPietro’s, The Last Romance. Closing the Mainstage season, Riverside joins forces with Walnut Street Theatre to produce the jubilant Broadway musical based on the hit movie, Legally Blonde.

On the intimate Waxlax Stage, a remarkable theatrical experience is promised with one of the most compelling musicals of recent years. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal, by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, is about a mother who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and its effects on her family. The musical also addresses the issues of grief, suicide, drug abuse, ethics in modern psychiatry and the underbelly of suburban life. Next to Normal has been hailed by critics as one of the best musicals of the 21st century. Also in the Waxlax theatre, audiences will engage in the fertile mind of playwright Michael Hollinger with Ghostwriter. A play about the meaning of truth, it should have audiences debating the meaning of that very timely question long after the curtain falls.

For community theatre fans, The Vero Beach Theatre Guild has a whole new approach this year. They went from five stage shows to six and opened their season in July instead of September, and there is still plenty to see. Audiences will be delighted by Ken Ludwig's quirky and hilarious holiday whodunnit The Game’s Afoot. In January Tom Dudzick’s Miracle

on South Division Street promises lots of laughs courtesy of an appearance by the Blessed Mother in a Buffalo barbershop.

Steven Sondheim’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum will be the March musical taking audiences on a joyous romp through Rome. The season will close in May with The Savannah Sipping Society by the comedy team of Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten—masters of southern humor.

A new offering is the Guild’s Apron Series for Reader’s Theatre. Billed as “Staged Readings in Front of the Grand Drape,” the Guild has four scheduled this season. 12 Angry Men by Sherman Sergel will kick off the series in October followed by Tom Mula’s Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol in December. Then A Night in the Theatre by Lawrence Casler is followed by the adults-only Things You Shouldn’t Say Past Midnight by Peter Ackerman, finishing the Apron Series.

When Molière said “of all the noises known to man, opera is the most expensive,” he certainly wasn’t talking about Vero Beach Opera, which is celebrating its 30th season this year.

Patrons will enjoy reasonably priced tickets to this year’s performances which open in January with Carmen, a fully staged opera with English supertitles.

February brings a Bel Canto Concert with Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti arias, duets, and ensembles. The performance

will feature Tenor Matthew White, the first-place winner of the 2018 Deborah Voight-Vero Beach Opera Foundation International Vocal Competition. In March audiences will savor Tenor Marcello Giordani in concert with the rising stars from the vocal competition.

If the reality of politics and economics is more your style, Riverside Theatre’s Distinguished Lecturer Series enters its 21st season and welcomes Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander James Stavridis on the topic of Global Security. President of Purdue University and former Governor of Indiana, Mitch Daniels, Jr. will speak in February on the issue of affordability, accessibility and accountability in higher education, followed by Wall Street Journal Editorial Board Member Kimberley Strassel with Inside the Trump Presidency. These lectures sell out quickly so get your tickets early.

Still one of the best-kept secrets on the Treasure Coast is the wildly talented

students of Vero Beach High School and their outstanding performing arts center.

New this year is The Sounds of the Citrus Bowl which will feature not only the award-winning Symphony and Jazz bands, but also the “Pride of the Treasure Coast” Fighting Indians Marching Band.

The season will open with the traditional Fall Choral Classics followed by the always popular Orchestral Spooktacular, a Halloween themed family-friendly evening. The Winter Wonderland concert is a musical delight capable of getting the scroogiest of scrooges into the holiday spirit. Side by Side by Sondheim is the Tony Award-winning musical planned for November and Mary Poppins- the New Musical will be presented in February. Among the many band, symphony, orchestra and choral performances scheduled throughout the year, the 26th Annual Red, White, and Blue Concert is still THE patriotic event of the year.

So, when you need a break from all the noise in your world, take a few hours some afternoon or evening, turn off the phone, calm down and go to the theatre!

ou’ll want to be part of the fun at Capt. Hirams this fall for these two annual events celebrating six years each, helping to keep up the health of people and our Indian River Lagoon.

October 14th get “ducked” out for Treasure Coast Community Health’s 6th Annual Great Duck Derby. The fun starts at noon for this family-friendly event at Capt. Hirams Sand Bar with games, face painting, music and more.

Then, at 2:00 pm 5,000 rubber ducks will be dropped into the lagoon and race their way to shore toward the finish gate! The winner gets a cash prize of $1,000, and there are additional cash prizes for second and third place.

Ducks are available for adoption now and up to an hour before the race begins. Adoption prices start at only

$5, and all proceeds directly benefit TCCH patients. Ducks can also be adopted online at www.duckrace. com/treasurecoast. On November 18th, Sebastian will be filled with triathletes of all ages and skill levels as Capt Hiram’s Resort hosts its 6th Annual River Challenge Triathlon. The race is a fantastic opportunity to bring the family and participate in an exciting community event benefiting one of our most valuable local treasures, the Indian River Lagoon.

“This race holds a special place in my heart. It is a mini-triathlon, dreamed up six years ago as a fun way to contribute to keeping our Indian River Lagoon in good health. Treasure Coast Birding Guide Florida's Treasure Coast is home to a multitude of bird species and part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Birding is fun!

Use this handy checklist to learn about and keep track of birds that you are certain to see while exploring the area.

Roseate Spoonbill

Sometimes mistaken for a flamingo, this gregarious wading bird is easily recognized for its bright pink plumage and big spoon shaped bill. There is a growing population of these beauties on the Treasure Coast due to rising water levels in the Everglades. Best seen around inland freshwater wetlands.

White Pelican

These migratory all white pelicans are twice the size of their brown cousins and breathtaking to behold. They are often referred to as the “original snowbirds� for their snow-white color and seasonal arrivals and departures. See them in large groups along the lagoon waterfront in Sebastian.

Sandhill Crane

Florida is home to two species of these enormous cranes which stand around four feet tall. The Greater visits from the north in the winter and the Lesser is a year-round resident.

Almost always seen in pairs, they are gray in color with dark red crowns. Residents stick mostly around freshwater ponds and lakes.

Wood Stork

This hefty wading bird sports a football shaped body, scaly featherless head and long curved bill that are dead giveaways to its Jurassic ancestry. Their plumage is mostly white with black tail and wing feathers. They roost in trees and hangout around brackish wetlands, ponds and lakes.

Great Blue Heron

The largest of the North American Herons. At an average of four feet tall with a wingspan of around six feet, they are magnificent to see in flight. Named for their blue-gray plumage they have yellow bills and black head feathers. They adapt to both salt and freshwater environments and are abundant along the Indian River Lagoon.

Great Egret

This is the snow-white version of the Great Blue Heron. Other than color they’re nearly identical size and habitat and can observed in many of the same places. Some smaller birds can be mistaken for the Snowy Egret, but their yellow bills and black feet make them identifiable.

Osprey

These large raptors can look like juvenile bald eagles with their white bellies and variegated brown underwings. They are actually a hawk found around salt water and feed primarily on fish which can commonly be seen clutched in their talons. Their nests are big stick structures often built on poles, channel markers and dead trees over open water.

Anhinga

This aquatic bird is sometimes called a “snake bird” for its long slithery neck or “water turkey” for its turkey like tail feathers. It stalks its prey underwater and then strikes a distinctive pose at the water’s edge to dry out. They inhabit shallow freshwater and can be most easily observed around inland marshes and ponds.

ctober starts Vero Beach’s Centennial and year-long celebration with special events happening around town over the next 12 months. The Little Bridge That Links Vero Beach to Disney’s Magic Kingdom By Kerry Firth

D

isney's Vero Beach Resort brings guests from around the world who cross over the Wabasso bridge for their first glimpse at the ocean. Yet few know the historical link between Disney and Wabasso, dating back to the years just before Disney World was completed.

The connection dates back to the 1880's when only a hardy few lived on Orchid Island. The bridge began as a dock built by the families of Captain Frank Forster and Stephen Michael as a place to tie up boats when they crossed the Indian River to the mainland. When the Florida East Coast Railway came in the early 1890s, the Wabasso dock became the only means for delivery of citrus, pineapples, and winter vegetables from Orchid Island, to the railroad and to market.

In the mid 1920’s development on Orchid Island grew until it was obvious a bridge was needed. In 1928, a narrow wooden bridge was built with a swing span to allow boats passage on the Intracoastal Waterway. The tender’s house sat in the middle of the river on the north side of the narrow two-lane bridge and a turn wheel opened the swing bridge.

In the late 1960s, as plans were being made to build a modern causeway and a new high-rise arch bridge over the river channel, a fire broke out and destroyed

a large section of the original Wabasso bridge. For several months the only way to cross the river was a floating “pontoon” bridge from the World War II era. This bridge was utilized until the new Wabasso Bridge (CR 510) was completed.

It was about that time that Florida's Magic Kingdom was constructing a small railroad to encircle the theme park.

They needed a draw bridge over a canal from the lagoon to the boatyard where the ferries were serviced. When they heard about the Florida Department of Transportation replacing an old swing bridge in Wabasso and decided to check it out. The Disney engineers decided they could salvage it, so they bought it and cut it up into smaller sections. The old bridge parts were then loaded on barges and towed to shipyard in Tampa. From there it was painstakingly re-built to Disney's standards and put into use.

Today when you cross the Intracoastal in Wabasso, you see Orchid Island, the Atlantic Ocean and the Disney Vero Beach Resort from the high “arch” of the modern bridge. And as you ride the railroad around the Magic Kingdom theme park you cross over the old Wabasso wooden swing bridge. It seems that history has forever connected the Wabasso Bridge to Disney in a lovely circle of life.

Fishing Forecast

October marks the transition into the fall weather patterns along the Treasure Coast. You can expect temperatures to begin to cool down somewhat into more comfortable days to enjoy the outdoors.

Water temperatures will begin to slowly cool off as well. Autumn months provide great weather and hungry fish. It's a fantastic time to be fishing!

The fall mullet run will continue to dominate the area as large schools of finger mullet fill the beaches, inlets and rivers of the area. It has been an active season this year. You can expect lots of big fish to be feeding on them both day and night. The surf will be alive with jacks, snook, bluefish and other predators, which will all be chasing the bait schools along the beach.

Snook fishing will be best during the night hours on the higher ends of the tides.

Live finger mullet, croakers and pigfish will be the best live baits to use. DOA Terror Eyz, Bait Busters and feather

www.fishtalescharter.com captaincharlie@fishtalescharter.com 772-284-3852 jigs will be good artificial lures to use for snook. Try around the jetties, turning basin and bridges as well as many of the deeper docks around the river. Lighted docks are especially productive when fishing at night.

Redfish has continued to be a wonderful fishery for us again this year. Each year has seen their population increase and many anglers have enjoyed the experience of fishing a large school of reds this year. The new DOA 2 3/4“ shrimp or CAL grub tails are two of the best choices for redfish along with a variety of live and cut baits. The west shoreline south of Fort Pierce is always a good area when looking for redfish.

Trout will continue to be a target of many anglers. The trout bite will be good on the flats, but move to the deeper areas as the temperatures cool the water down. Look for them in three to six feet of water this month. My favorite lures are DOA shrimp or Deadly Combos when trout fishing.

Don’t forget to fish the sand holes and drop offs on the flats. Many sand holes are much deeper than the flat and you can expect some nice fish to be hiding in them waiting for that easy meal to drift by.

Harbor Branch is especially productive this time of year as well as the Midway Road area.

Pompano will return to the river and will be a favorite target for anglers throughout the winter.

As always, remember, fishing is not just another hobby....it's an ADVENTURE! Good Fishing and Be Safe!

Not Just for Fishermen

Along the Florida coast, while the threat of hurricanes can make fall feel a little turbulent, there is another kind of turbulence that happens along the beaches that’s just, well plain fun! The fall mullet run is one of nature’s greatest spectacles; no shutters, batteries or flashlights required!

While Treasure Coast anglers eagerly await this time of year with a Christmas morning-like giddiness for obvious reasons, the mullet run can be enjoyed by anyone sans rod and reel. Each year when water temperatures begin to drop up north, mullet, which are a family (Mugilidae) of ray-finned fish, begin the journey toward warmer waters in one of the largest annual migrations on earth. Mullet are one of Florida’s most ecologically important fish species and nearly every predatory fish targeted by anglers feeds on them.

During the mass migration in September and October, enormous schools of mullet run right along our shorelines creating feeding frenzies as other fish chase them.

It is a sight to behold as everything from tarpon and snook to jacks and sharks are

in hot pursuit. The waves explode with fish by the thousands during this epic feeding event. Birds join the action to complete the picture of one of nature’s most astounding displays.

The best time to see the show is early morning or evening on calm days when the water is clear. If you like to photograph wildlife on the water, this is like “shooting fish in a barrel” when it comes to getting great shots right from shore. Be cautious if entering the water during this time. It’s never a good idea to swim among schools of baitfish since larger predators are also in the mix and actively feeding. Sharks and other toothy hunters are not the only danger.

Tarpon are powerful and fast enough to break bones in an unintended collision with a swimmer.

If you have never witnessed the fall mullet run, you’re missing out on something extraordinary. So set a reminder for yourself to head down to the beach one of these days before we get too far into November and enjoy one of nature's most unique and always free shows!
