Children are welcome to move during the program. Feel free to let little ones get up, dance, and participate in the interactive moments. Please stay off the center stage platform while the concert is in progress. Adults are expected to remain seated throughout the program unless there is an emergency. Some instruments are quite fragile. Please do not touch (or let a child touch) a musician's instrument unless the musician offers for you to do so. Have any questions, comments, or concerns? Find a volunteer or staff member in a Tiny Tots or Inside the Orchestra shirt and we'll be happy to help!

ABOUT US Inside the Orchestra is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are passionate about the world of the orchestra being a place for everyone. Working to cultivate an inclusive and equitable environment where all children feel welcomed are key components of our work. We have a completely open door policy, thus providing experiences that are otherwise unavailable to many children, communities, and schools. Our immersive, experiential programs are designed with the age and stage of each child served in mind. Programs are open to the public and provided in the Denver metro school system.

PROGRAM NOTES TARANTELLA NAPOLETANA A tarantella is an upbeat folk dance that originated in Naples and the Southern region of Italy. The name tarantella is actually inspired by the tarantula. The tarantula spider is very common in this region on Italy and the folklore says that the dance wards off spider bites or help victims after they’ve been bit. Listen during this upbeat introduction to the concert. FANGA ALAFIA Fanga, sometimes spelled as Funga, is a traditional welcoming dance from West African countries. The song Fanga Alafia is based on traditional Fanga song and dance and the version you’ll hear today is often a call and response piece. Dancers from Cleo Parker Robinson Dance will join us for this piece. IRISH SUITE - THE IRISH WASHERWOMAN Leroy Anderson’s Irish Suite was commissioned by the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1947. Each movement features a different traditional Irish tune. The Irish Washerwoman is the first movement of the suite. It’s a lively jig that originated in the British Isles and is now well-known across the world. Bounce up and down in time with this fun piece. EARLY IN THE MORNIN Early in the Morning is a blues tune. The blues is a form of music that originated in the south in the late 1800s, based on African music and spirituals and African-American songs. Blues uses specific chords that is instantly recognizable by all jazz musicians. This piece was written in 1947 and uses Afro-Cuban percussion. Pretend to play your violin as we are joined by our orchestra’s own blues musician, Lionel Young. WALTZING MATILDA Waltzing Matilda is so important and well-known to the people of Australia that it’s often referred to as their unofficial national anthem. It tells the story of a wandering worker in the Australian bush. It was written around 1900 and first recorded in 1926. Many of the words may be unfamiliar to US audiences even though the song is in English, but they are important parts of Australian culture: swagman, billabong, a billy, tucker bag, and more! Pack up your tucker bag and get ready to explore the outback during this piece. ALMA LLANERA Alma Llanera means “Soul of the Plains” and is a song about the beautiful landscape of Venezuela. It is a joropo, which is a traditional musical style from Venezuela and also the country’s national dance. It was composed in 1914, and is called Venezuela’s unofficial national anthem. It’s tradition to end any social reunion or party by singing or playing it. We’ll welcome Raquel Garcia to sing this piece with our orchestra.
PROGRAM NOTES IN THE HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING Edward Grieg is perhaps the best-known composer from Norway and much of his music uses traditional Norwegian folk songs. Peer Gynt is an important Norwegian story and the piece was immediately successful when in premiered. You can hear Peer as he tries to escape from the scary mountain troll king. He gets away, but only because the troll king ultimately decides to let him go. Help Peer escape by running in place as the music plays. KAHE CHEDE MOHE This song is from a 2002 Bollywood movie. Deepali Lindblom of Roshni dance will be performing a Kathak dance on this music. Kathak is a traditional Indian classical dance that tells a story. Dancers of this style tell stories through their hand movements and footwork as well as their facial expressions. Watch as Deepali joins us to tell the story through her dance. SLAVONIC MARCH Slavonic March is a tone poem composed in 1876. A tone poem is a piece of music, usually one long movement, that illustrates a poem, story, or other non-musical source. The music is intended to inspire listeners to imagine scenes, images, or moods. Pretend to play your favorite brass instrument. SHOJOJI Shojoji is a Japanese nursery rhyme about a hungry racoon-dog, called a tanuki. In the song, the tanuki taps on it’s belly like a drum. This piece will feature the Japanese Taiko drum. Though in Japan, taiko refers to any kind of drum, outside of Japan they usually refer to a type of drum called wadaiko. We’ll be joined by Margaret Ozaki Graves on the taiko drum. ZORBA'S DANCE This piece was written for a 1964 movie and even though it is a somewhat modern piece, it is a part of Greek culture and tradition. Listeners often dance a sirtaki dance along to this piece. Sirtaki is danced in a line or circle formation where your hands hold on to your neighbor’s shoulders. Let’s use move our arms faster and faster to show the changing tempo of the music. UN POCO LOCO Un Poco Loco, from the movie Coco, is a piece of music in the mariachi style. Mariachi dates to at least the 1700s and evolved in the countryside in parts of western Mexico. Mariachi is usually is performed by a small ensemble of mostly string instruments including types of guitars and violins as well as trumpet and singers. Singer Raquel Garcia will join us again for this piece.
CONDUCTOR AND ARRANGER Dan Leavitt Dan has a Master of Arts in Music from the University of Denver. He has written over 500 arrangements that are played all over the world. Dan has taught at the University of Colorado Boulder, Metropolitan State University, Colorado Christian University and Cherry Creek High School. He is currently the conductor of the Mercury Ensemble and has conducted the Colorado Ballet and the Denver Municipal Band. Dan has performed with numerous artists and ensembles such as Andrea Bocelli, Barry Manilow, Ray Charles, John Denver, Bob Hope, The Canadian Brass, The Irish Tenors, Mannheim Steam Roller, Aaron Copland, The Denver Brass, Denver Chamber Orchestra, Colorado Chamber Players, Central City Opera, and The Colorado Symphony. He has performed four times for Presidents of the US. He has recorded with the Colorado Symphony, The Boulder Brass, Rare Silk, and can be heard on Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman by Joan Tower. He has a passion for conducting, performing, composing, and music education.
TEACHING ARTIST Maggy Stacy Maggy Stacy is a Teaching Artist with DCPA Education and works to develop skills, confidence, and creativity in young people through the performing arts and arts integration. Maggy also works as an acting and public speaking coach, audio book narrator, and performer in the Denver Metro area.
