From the President

I

n my second year as president of the Southeastern Museums Conference, I remain proud and grateful to be part of such an effective, respected, and growing professional organization.

We are fortunate in the Southeast to be represented by an organization that can address vital issues affecting our museums and provide an indispensable forum for interaction, mutual support, and professional development.

This annual report documents the extraordinary effort, commitment, and resourcefulness of our membership and the SEMC Council and staff. It has been humbling and gratifying to observe the quality and dedication of our volunteer leadership — following a long and distinguished tradition — as well as the exceptional skill, talent, and drive of SEMC Executive Director Susan Perry. She is now ably assisted by Mary Miller, who is handling communications and member services. SEMC continues to benefit from a contractual arrangement with the Atlanta History Center to provide office space and administrative and technical support.

For me the highlight of the year was once again the SEMC annual meeting, in Jacksonville in October.

I thought we could never top the hospitality and warm welcome that Knoxville provided last year, but I was wrong. The museums of Jacksonville rolled out the red carpet and created an exceptional and unforgettable experience for everyone who attended.

I have no doubt that Charlotte in 2016 will reach or exceed the high bar that’s been set. The annual meeting is the most visible way SEMC benefits its members, by providing the opportunity for an intense few days of networking, fellowship, and professional growth. A successful annual meeting benefits everyone who attends — and by extension the entire museum profession in our region — and also provides much of the revenue SEMC needs to continue to serve the field.

As I noted last year, only a financially viable organization can operate effectively on behalf of its membership. Thanks to careful planning and budgeting, strict fiscal controls, and close oversight, SEMC remains in excellent financial shape, and is one of few museum organizations in the country to be blessed with an endowment fund, which at the end of 2015 had a value of $330,424. The interest revenue generated by this fund directly benefits our members, in the form of scholarships to the annual meeting and the Jekyll Island Management Institute. Early in 2014, an anonymous donor challenged us to match a $10,000 endowment gift within three years; by the end of the annual meeting in Jacksonville, we had

exceeded that goal (a year early!). The growth of the endowment says a lot about the quality and vision of the leaders who first established the fund years ago, and the prospects for our future as an organization and as a profession.

The SEMC Council is engaged right now in a strategic planning process that will help us better align our activities with the needs of our members and help us respond to an ever-changing environment.

You will be hearing more about this process in the coming months and invited to weigh in on the final document, but the feedback you’ve already provided from annual meetings and regular member surveys has already been tremendously influential in shaping the conversation. With your help and input, we will continue to move toward the goal of making SEMC an even more diverse, responsive, and effective instrument to support your work and enhance your effectiveness in your own community.

OUR MISSION The Southeastern Museums Conference is a networking organization that serves to foster professionalism, mutual support, and communication. A non-profit membership association, SEMC strives to increase educational and professional development opportunities and improve the interchange of ideas, information, and cooperation.

OUR HISTORY In 1951 the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC) was established at a meeting in Norfolk. It was agreed that the organization should include the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia.

SEMC’s first task was to appoint a committee to get the southeast included in a Congress bill to appropriate money to provide places of safe-keeping for museum objects in case of war.

In 1956 Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia petitioned to join SEMC. The Council suggested they form their own organization, today known as the Mid-Atlantic Museums Association.

SEMC formulated its first five year plan in 1959 and Arkansas was added to the SEMC. This was followed by two professional development workshops in North Carolina the following year. The workshops discussed museum training and the restoration of historic houses.

Throughout the 1960s, SEMC continued to grow.

A $25,000 foundation grant employed an SEMC representative to carry out further training workshops; SEMC urged the American Alliance (formerly Association) of Museums to formulate a museum accreditation program; and by 1969 SEMC had established a three-part annual meeting.

The 1970s and 1980s allowed SEMC to become a more sophisticated organization. Local arrangements and program committees were established for the annual meeting; SEMC published a directory of educational resources; SEMC was officially incorporated; and exhibitors were added to the annual meeting.

In 1982, the central offices of SEMC were moved to Memphis and then again in 1986, they moved to Baton Rouge. By 1992 a full time Executive Director and a Director of Office and Membership Services had been hired. Shortly after that SEMC’s endowment was established to promote financial stability.

In 1996 the JumpStart Program began. This program flourished during the first decade of the 21st century and is now known as the Jekyll Island Management Institute (JIMI) offering an eight-day intensive museum training to museum professionals with two years’ experience or more.

In 2003, SEMC central offices moved to Atlanta.

In 2005 SEMC established a Hurricane Katrina grant fund and awarded over $500,000 to museums and museum employees affected by the storm in the states of Mississippi and Louisiana.

In 2010, SEMC established a partnership with Atlanta History Center where SEMC office relocated.

In 2015 SEMC, the five other regional museum associations, and the American Alliance of Museums completed the first National Museum Salary Survey, the only comprehensive study of its kind for our diverse field.

Today, SEMC continues to create programs like JIMI and the National Museum Salary Survey to support its ongoing mission to foster professionalism and support for museum professionals.

OUR VISION SEMC will be an essential resource for its members and the broader museum community.

OUR PAST YEAR HIGHLIGHTS The year 2015 has been exciting for the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC). SEMC expanded our communications and resources for museum professionals.

This year SEMC completed our first Endowment Matching Gift Campaign and exceeded our goal of $10,000 in two years. SEMC continued its goal of financial stability and sustainability in fiscal year 2015 with a record net of $75,538 and added $25,000 to the SEMC Reserve Fund. Thank you to those that have contributed $10,805 to SEMC endowment in the past two years.

SEMC hosted almost 300 people at an evening event at the Fernbank Museum as part of the American Alliance of Museums 2015 Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

SEMC had a successful annual conference in Jacksonville with 525 attendees. In 2015 SEMC initiated the annual Technology Competition with 31 entries representing 14 museums and 18 award winners. SEMC Scholarship program offered 8 travel awards scholarships plus the Presidential scholarship, including the African American Museum Professional scholarship. This past year SEMC provided a scholarship opportunity, sponsored by John A. Woods Appraisers, for historic house museum professionals to participate in SEMC annual conference. Seventytwo program sessions and seventy Resource Expo exhibitors provided new ideas, professional expertise and best practices. Two exciting sessions, “Ignite SEMC: Thoughts to Spark Your Passion for Museums” and “Museums Stand Up,” inspired change for SEMC members. In the keynote address “Museums Are Awesome,” Nick Gray with Museum Hack presented innovative ways to engage new audiences. The Council listened to our members and discussed our impact and joint vision for SEMC’s future.

SEMC wants to serve your diverse needs and improve our communications. This year Mary Miller joined SEMC staff as the Manager of Communications and Member Services. SEMC has expanded our social media coverage and digital communications. In 2015 SEMC initiated two new levels of membership for mid-size museums and retired museum

professionals. SEMC surveyed our members and focused on programs that serve the diverse needs of Southeast museum professionals. SEMC realizes the potential to grow our membership. Beyond annual meeting, SEMC offered a workshop for historic house museums in Atlanta in partnership with AASLH. SEMC provided more membership benefits and resources to meet your needs.

The Jekyll Island Management Institute 2015 (JIMI) graduated 17 people from 10 states, including California and Washington in addition to the Southeastern states. Thanks to the generosity of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), SEMC was pleased to offer the John Kinard Scholarship Fund for two staff members of AAAM institutional museums or individual AAAM members to attend SEMC’s Jekyll Island Management Institute (JIMI). JIMI 2015 provided leadership training for the most diverse class in the past fifteen years.

In 2015 SEMC leadership focused on the organization’s impact on museum professionals.

We are passionate about the professional support, camaraderie, and network of SEMC. In the past year, SEMC provided more opportunities for professional learning for Southeast museum professionals.
