THE CAPITAL OF GEORGIA, TBILISI

The capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, is its largest city, with a population of roughly 1.4 million. The name Tbilisi is derived from the Georgian word “Tpili”, meaning warm, given to the city because of the abundance of sulfuric hot springs. Tbilisi enchants with its history, colorful architecture and dynamic lifestyle. Over the centuries people of various ethnic backgrounds and persuasions easily mixed here and lived peacefully side by side. The architecture in Tbilisi is a blend of various cultural styles. One of the most remarkable features are the wooden balconies of the Old Town, which vary in size, colour and style.

COUNTRY

Georgia lies in the heart of the South Caucasus region, between the Greater and Lesser Caucasus Ranges, on the eastern coastline of the Black Sea. The first states were formed on the territory of modern Georgia in 12-7th century BC, among them Colchis kingdom, where according to the popular Greek legend Argonauts sailed in search of the Golden Fleece. Georgia’s total area is 69,700 km², with the population of approx. 3.7 million. It is a representative democratic parliamentary republic. The only official language of the country is “Kartuli”, which has its own writing system – the Georgian script. The largest part of the population in Georgia practices Orthodox Christianity.

The best season for cultural and outdoor tourism in Georgia is from the mid-April to the midOctober. From the mid-December to April winter travelers are welcome in countries’ 4 Ski Resorts.

Georgians are exceptionally hospitable, their culture rich with traditions. It is believed that the key to appreciating Georgian people lies in their cheerful character, marked by spontaneity, sincerity and sense of humor. According to a popular legend, it was these qualities of their national character that God liked so much that when creating the world, He gave Georgians the best lands that he originally wanted to keep for Himself. THE CRADLE OF WINE

Vines found today on the territory of Georgia date back to 6000 BC. One of the most popular and widespread methods of making wine has always been the so-called Kakhetian tradition: storing wine in clay jars called “kvevri” buried under the ground (UNESCO World Heritage). In the middle of Alazani Valley lies Kakheti’s largest and one of the most important wine cities, Telavi.

GEORGIAN CUISINE

Explore delicious variety of Georgian cuisine in a traditional restaurant or with a local family. Traditional Georgian cuisine combines fresh meats, fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices into distinctly flavourful dishes that are considered among the healthiest in the world.

LEGENDS AND MYTHS

There are many legends about Georgia. Two of them originate from the Greek mythology: legend about Prometheus who was chained at Mt. Kazbek as the punishment for stealing fire from Zeus and legend about Argonauts, who sailed to the rich kingdom of Colchis (today Georgia) in the search of the Golden Fleece.
