PUBLISHER’S INSIGHT Summer's Coming to an End

I

t is hard to believe that summer break is winding down and before we know it the School buses will be back on the streets, the crossing guards will be manning the school zones and police officers will be back directing traffic in and out of our local schools. Yes, a new school year is upon us and I feel like I was telling my wife just the other day “Wow, we can sleep in an extra hour.” Ten weeks goes by fast and before you know the school bells will be ringing. I hope you and your families had time to relax this summer and did some of the things you wanted to do. Let’s look at the bright side though, we have had a quiet two months of hurricane season so far. We are just 6 weeks away from the Pro and College football seasons starting, and by my calculations, about three months from some cooler weather. Heck, we will be decorating soon for Halloween as time keeps marching on.

Alexandra Davis, plus some of the great events and activities coming up in Miramar the next few weeks. The summer month’s can be slower than normal for some of our local businesses so do your best to help support them as we wind down our vacations and get back into the swing of things. Let them know you saw their ad in Inside Miramar and take advantage of any special offers they might be promoting. Remember, small local businesses are the live blood of our community. Last issue, Inside Miramar the Magazine celebrated it’s ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY. As planned we mailed out eight issues over the course of the year. I truly appreciate all of the support and positive feedback from you the reader and the trust from the local business owners.

Like always, the City of Miramar has provided us with some excellent articles this issue, so take your time and enjoy the Business Spot Light on Pages 10 and 11. There is a great read on Page 18, which focuses on: Fertile ground for key growth sectors and Page 19 has your Business Pulse. You will also find messages from the Mayor Wayne Messam and the Vice Mayor

We will continue to provide you with an informative and interesting magazine every six weeks in the city you call home. Sincerely,

BUSINESS spotlight miramar is alive, thriving, and on the move with a strong mindset for growth, innovation and change. united data technologies United Data Technologies (UDT), a technology solutions company that evaluates, architects, secures and manages information, has relocated their headquarters to Miramar, Florida. UDT now resides in the Miramar Tech Center, located at 2900 Monarch Lakes Blvd., Miramar, FL 33027. The tech center is a three-story, Class A office building offering approximately 56,710 square feet of rentable space. Henry Fleches, CEO of UDT, and Gerard Amaro, President of UDT, chose to relocate the headquarters to Miramar because the city is strategically located in the heart of South Florida. The location allows for UDT employees traveling from Dade County to the South and Palm Beach County to the North optimal access to our headquarters, making the commute as convenient as possible. Access to both Miami International Airport as well as Fort Lauderdale International airport was a major consideration to ensure convenience for clients and business partners visiting UDT’s corporate headquarters. “We are thrilled to have the beautiful City of Miramar as the location for our new corporate headquarters,” said Fleches. “This location has excellent access to many restaurants, hotels and nearby shopping for our on-site employees to enjoy during breaks and off-site employees to experience during corporate travel. It was a pleasure to work closely with The City of Miramar during construction as they value bringing high-paying jobs to the area and were very helpful in navigating the process to relocate our offices. The Tech Center is located in the heart of Miramar and boasts full generator backup power, wind-rated impact glass, electric car charging stations, dual HVAC chillers, heavy power and multiple telecommunication carriers with independent feeds to ensure redundancy and business continuity. The building is also hardened for hurricane resistance and offers high-end conferencing facilities and garage parking of 5.3 per 1,000 square feet. The building is also home to our fully staffed, 24/7, in-house Security Operations Center (SOC) and Network Operations Center (NOC). More information regarding UDT’s new headquarters, please call 954-308-5100.

DAIRY QUEEN When you think of ice cream in Miramar, you can’t help but think of Dairy Queen—Miramar’s first and oldest business currently owned by Nancy Nortmann. For more than 60 years, Dairy Queen has been a staple of the Miramar community, serving up Miramar’s finest sweet treats to residents and visitors alike. In 1977, Nortmann began her journey with Dairy Queen when she went to work for the original owners. Quickly learning the business from the ground up, Nancy saw a greater opportunity and decided, along ĵĵ 10

with her siblings, to purchase the franchise in 2006. The company continued to experience growth over the next ten years and Nancy seized the opportunity to purchase the company and become its sole owner. “I have many regulars who come with their kids and tell me stories of when their parents used to bring them here as children,” Nortmann says. “I am so appreciative of the multiple generations who continue to support my business. This is why it is great to be a part of the Miramar business family—with all the development Miramar has experienced over the years, the community has remained supportive and we look forward to continued success in the City of Beauty and Progress!” When you visit Miramar’s Dairy Queen, be sure to take special note of the 1953 building design which includes the restoration of the original neon sign Nortmann completed to preserve a nostalgic experience. jl audio It all started in the mid-197o’s when two high school friends, Jim Birch and Lucio Proni, built home loudspeakers for fun. Initially, they sold to friends, attaching their initials to the business. In the late 1980s, they started competing in sound competitions, winning national championships and wowing car audio enthusiasts around the United States with their own brand, JL Audio. From operating out of a tiny Miramar warehouse, the business continued to expand, moving to its current 157,000 square feet space in 1998. JL Audio entered the marine and home audio markets in 2004. Over its 44-year history, the Miramar operation has grown from just Jim and Lucio to now employing 530 employees. In the last two years, JL Audio staff has increased by more than 40 percent, and continues to expand its product line and its footprint by 53,000 square feet. Now, JL Audio products number more than 1,000 in total and are considered to be the highest quality car, marine and ahome audio products available. “JL Audio has been really lucky to call Miramar home,” said JL Audio president Andy Oxenhorn, who joined the company in 1996. “Since we started, we’ve focused on hiring locally, producing products in the U.S. and treating our employees like family.” Over the years, the City of Miramar has been very supportive and helpful as we grew the business and expanded our facility. It’s a great place to do business. More information regarding JL Audio, please call (954) 443-1100, or www.JLAudio.com.

Hurricane Preparedness

H

urricane season is upon us; it officially started June 1st and lasts all the way to November 30th. We would like to remind everyone of some safety tips and information that will help keep you and all your loved ones safe during this hurricane season. It is important to remember to stock up on items well before the hurricane or tropical storm watch is issued. You should plan to be self-sufficient for 3 to 5 days. Good planning is the first step on ensuring that you and your loved ones’ stay safe during this hurricane season. Get an emergency kit. Building an emergency kit can be inexpensive and fun. Go online to find a complete list of resources you’ll need to make your emergency kit. Keep in mind to customize your kit to any special needs you and your family may have. For example: - If space allows, children’s games to keep your family entertained. - Refills of important prescriptions - If your area is vulnerable to flooding, water poof boots or shoes will be useful. Before an emergency happens sit down with your family and discuss how you will get in contact with each other, where you will go and what will you do during an emergency. If you are a parent, or guardian of a disabled individual, make sure to ask school and day care providers what emergency plan they have established in case of an emergency.

The following are some important questions to ask: - How will communication take place with families? - Ask if they store food, water and other basic supplies. - Find out if they are prepared to shelter-in-place if need be, and where they plan to go if they must get away. If you have a medical condition that requires a higher level of care than those at General shelters, but you do not require hospitalization, a Special Shelter may be the best choice for you. These types of shelters offer basic medical assistance. They are staffed with medical personnel and have backup electricity for essential medical equipment. To obtain an application for Special Needs Shelter and/ or Paratransit evacuation, transportation, call Broward County Human Services at 954-357-6385 or TTY 954-357-5608. For all pet owners, we’d like to inform you that the American Red Cross and Humane Society operate a pet friendly emergency shelter. Pre-registration is required. Contact the Humane society of Broward County at 954-9893977 Ext. 7. Keep in mind to make plans early in the hurricane season to ensure space is available for your pet. Space is first come first serve, and limited to those in designated evacuation zones. Last, but by no means least, we would like to talk about the importance of generator safety. Never use portable generators inside a home, garage, basement or crawl space. Portable generators should be placed outside in a well-ventilated area. Also fuel should not be stored indoors. Generators are useful when electric power is needed but they can be fatally dangerous if not handled properly.

Fertile Ground for Key Growth Sectors

W

hen Miramar-based cancer and infectious disease research company Altor BioScience Corp. was acquired in 2017 for $1 billion, it was more than Florida’s largest ever biotech acquisition. It was confirmation that Miramar is fertile ground for the state’s growing biotech and life science sector.

Altor founder Hing C. Wong is at it again. His latest start-up — HCW Biologics — is continuing Wong’s pursuit of immunotherapeutics for the treatment of cancer and age-related diseases. Today, HCW, an acronym for “Heaven Can Wait,” is thriving in the same Miramar corporate park where Wong founded Altor 17 years ago. “We’re taking bioscience innovation and research from the bench to the bedside,” said Wong. “It’s all done here in Miramar.” “Miramar is ripe for groundbreaking work across key business clusters,” said City Manager Vernon E. Hargray. Beyond biotech and life science, sectors include technology, aviation, logistics and education. In all, the city has more than a dozen corporate and office parks and hundreds of acres primed for further development.

“Attracting clean industries and reduced traffic delivers a higher quality of life with low impact on residents and businesses alike.”

Altor Founder Hing C. Wong and Miramar City Manager Vernon E. Hargray

The city’s growth was spurred by some $600 million in infrastructure projects and partnerships with Broward County and the state, as well as area businesses, developers and universities. Together, they’re bringing to life novel development, innovation zones and a regional business park that will result in a 21st Century “smart city.”

than that found in other bioscience markets like California’s Bay Area. Housing costs are far more affordable, especially for new hires earning a median salary of $72,000. Executives fleeing high-income tax states will find “Life Less Taxing” in Florida, which has no state income tax and relatively low sales taxes.

“Attracting clean industries and reduced traffic delivers a higher quality of life with low impact on residents and businesses alike,” Hargray said.

Those new hires are bountiful. Area schools include the University of Miami, Florida International University, Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University, Broward College and several others with robust STEM programs.

Nestled along the county’s southern edge, the city of 140,000 is within easy reach of the region’s three international airports and three seaports. Interstate 75 and Florida’s Turnpike put MiamiDade and Palm Beach counties’ diverse population of six million just a drive away. For life science companies, as well as leading employers Spirit Airlines, Carnival Cruises, United Data Technologies, American Express and others, Miramar is ideal for a host of reasons. Wong’s rent is a third or less

Miramar’s educational offering, subtropical climate, diverse culture, including the city’s Caribbean community, and lively entertainment options, make the location an easy sell for executives and companies alike. “When you have a good name and reputation, and you’re in an attractive location, you can get anyone,” Wong said. “Miramar has a vision, and we are proud to be a part of it.”

IN IDER Football: The Boys Are Back by Chris Koval - Publisher

F

ootball season is BACK my friends! The smell of fresh cut grass everyday at Dolphins and Hurricanes practice fields is a much needed shot in the arm for us sports fans here in South Florida. The Marlins baseball season has pretty much gone as we expected, a lot of losing, rebuilding the farm system and watching the young players navigate their way through an entire season of baseball. The pitching has been a nice surprise and the pitching depth in the farm systems looks to be getting back on track with Derek Jeter and Michael Hill, President of Baseball Operations in charge. The Miami Heat ended up being players in free agency too much of my surprise. The arrival of Jimmy Butler puts the Heat at least in my opinion in the upper half of the Eastern Conference. I really like the young nucleus of talent the Heat has drafted the past few seasons like, Bam Adebayo, Justice Winslow, and this years picks, Tyler Hero and KZ Okpala. Throw in the veteran mix on the team and the Heat will be a fun team to watch starting in November. But, back to my beloved Dolphins and Canes. First the “U”, Coach Manny Diaz hasn’t been afraid to make changes since he was hired at the end of last year. He blew up the offensive staff right after he was hired and put his immediate stamp on that side of the ball. The Defense should be stout this year again with returning players Shaq Quarterman, Michael Pinckney, Trajan Bandy and Zach McCloud all returning. All the gloom and doom seems to have been lifted with the Hiring of Coach Diaz. He has embraced the UM tradition and swagger and I can honestly see the Canes being a National powerhouse in the next few years. I can’t wait until August 24 when the Canes Kickoff the College football season versus rival Florida. The Miami Dolphins will be in re build mode this season, they won’t admit that but it is clearly obvious. I love the hire of Coach Brain Flores from the Patriots coaching staff and I am willing to give him some time to put this thing back together again. Hell, we have been waiting for 20 years now, what is another 2 or 3 going to matter if he can fix the once proud Miami Dolphins. There are tons of story lines to follow all season long but none are as intriguing as the development of quarterback Josh Rosen whom the Fins traded for on Draft night. This alone keeps me interested all season long. I also want to keep on eye on players like Xavien Howard, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Kenyan Drake, Kalen Ballage, Jerome Baker, Davon Godchaux, Leremy Tunsil and Rookie Christian Wilkins from Clemson. This has to be the core groups of guys that help turn the Dolphins around the next few years. Let us not forget, the Fins have 12 draft picks and over 100 million in cap space to spend next season. It’s not about winning and losing this season in Miami but are the young guys developing and did you find your franchise QB in Rosen, only time will tell but I am on for the ride.

Miracle Leaf: Alternative Pathwaves to Healthier Living

S

ince Florida voters approved Amendment 2 on November 8, 2016, known as the Florida Medical Marijuana Legalization Initiative, legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, medical cannabis has seen increasing rise in Florida. California first passed a proposition legalizing marijuana for medical purposes over 23 years ago in 1996, and most recently national support is growing. To date, the Cannabis Industry has delivered over 100,000 jobs and billions in tax revenue. Miracle Leaf Health Centers, located in Pembroke Pines on the corner of Flamingo and Pines, is premier medical cannabis health center for Florida residents in search of something that everyone can benefit from, alternative pathways to healthier living. So for family and friends who suffer from ALS, anxiety, arthritis, cancer, epilepsy, PTSD, and many other qualifying conditions, they now have that alternative approach that they have been looking for to ease them from their ailments. Miracle Leaf declares, “We vow to assist our patients throughout the entire process; from the moment a patient walks through our clinic doors to the moment they receive their certifications for medical cannabis. Our state-certified cannabis doctors work hard to ensure our patients live happier and healthier lives. We also believe their is some misconception about medical marijuana. Most patients do not know that it comes in many forms. The most common-known method is smoking. However, medical marijuana can be taken as an oil, capsule or topical. Additionally, our doctors can help you determine the right amount of dosage for each patient. Thus, you do not have to have a full dosage of medical marijuana. Additionally, after you have the card, medical marijuana can be delivered to your home. Further, you can take medical marijuana without the smell and without others knowing you are medicated. You can also travel with CBD. Our clients have taken our CBD products to the continents of Africa, Europe, and Asia. Finally, while medical marijuana can assist with relaxing, there are also variations that can assist with giving a patient energy. We encourage customers to visit our store to learn more. It is healthier to use medical marijuana then to use illegal self-medicated street marijuana. There is no comparison to the outcomes and the purity of getting treated with medical marijuana.”

Miracle Leaf Health Centers of Pembroke Pines opened their doors to the public on April 9, 2019. Since opening in April, they have seen huge success in repeated clients who want medical marijuana and CBD products. They have a state of the art facility, one of the best medical marijuana clinic facilities in the state of Florida. Since opening, they have heard many testimonies regarding medical marijuana, as well as their CBD

products. Most recently a client called to state that medical marijuana helped him regain his confidence and overall health after he suffered a setback mentally and physically as a result of prostate cancer. Parents have raved about the impact of CBD on their child's autism, specifically citing reduction in seizures, better sleep and focus . Men have stated that their CBD products have helped them with hair growth when they believed they were genetically predisposition to losing hair. Cancer patients have benefited from taking medical marijuana, especially during chemotherapy. Miracle Leaf states, "We try to caution individuals about purchasing CBD products online or elsewhere. Not all CBD products are made the same. If a person has been unsuccessful with CBD, we ask them to give our CBD products a try. We stand behind the results because of the testimonies from clients of the Pembroke Pines location, as well as Miracle Leaf Health Centers around the State of Florida." Miracle Leaf Health Centers of Pembroke Pines is proud of their Doctor recommended CBD product line. An unexpected new trend is that yoga studios are purchasing Miracle Leaf of Pembroke Pines CBD oils and offering their clients tea infused with Miracle leaf CBD oil. As a result, the yoga clients become clients of Miracle Leaf's CBD products and some make an appointment to begin using cannabis. "We find CBD to be a great alternative to the traditional medicines for those who aren’t ready for cannabis," says Miracle Leaf of Pembroke Pines. Most recently they have launched meditation classes on Fridays and Saturdays and they also offer CBD-infused massages throughout the week. Their primarily goal in offering meditation and massage as a service is to cater to those individuals who need to escape from the day-to-day hustle and stress that life can bring, as well as to those who want to escape from the ceaseless pain. Inflammation has a direct connection with acute pain, especially at joints or in muscles. By massaging the affected areas of the body with CBD oil, the cannabinoid's natural anti-inflammatory properties can help in reducing the inflammation and thus relieve any discomfort felt because of sore muscles. More people are now considering CBD as a potential treatment for pain. Apart from lessening inflammation, CBD can also enhance the circulation of blood throughout the areas affected and soothes muscle tension. The addition of cannabis to your meditation can enhance the experience and improve your mind. Nowadays, most are faced with stress because of hard work, financial hardship. This, in turn, can lead many people to develop symptoms like anxiety, depression, and stress. Stress is very detrimental to the brain as it leads to mental health problems, dangerous increase, in blood pressure, weight gain, arterial damage and cancer. Therefore, the world needs stress management techniques, and one that is growing at a fast rate is taking CBD before beginning meditation or having a massage. For that much needed relief, think Miracle Leaf! Miracle Leaf of Pembroke Pines is located at 12510 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, FL. Doctors are onsite every Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. and walk-ins are welcomed. Please visit www. miracleleafpines.com or call 954-256-7421 for questions or to schedule an appointment for any of their services. A card is not needed to purchase their CBD products.
