Message from the Mayor

I

t’s wonderful to jump into the summer months when we’re able to plan activities with the family around a less busy schedule since school is out. We move forward with thoughts of a staycation or traveling to experience new places. Traveling and taking some time off is wonderful but let’s remember that the summer also means the beginning of Hurricane Season. So as we prepare to have fun during the summer, it’s important that as we ensure we have a plan to ensure we are safe and ready. To assist you and your family during hurricane season, the City of Miramar Fire-Rescue Department has the complete preparedness guide on their website which can be found at miramarfd.org. Please take time to be prepared for all the things that can come up during the summer.

covering how to become a pilot, engineer, air traffic controller, maintenance repair technician among other exciting aviation careers. The Mayor’s Aviation Camp will take place on Tuesday, July 16th for 75 students. Of the 75 students, 35 will be selected to go on a behind-the-scenes Airport Tour. You can call my office to register or look for the information in next month’s issue. I will also be holding additional Conversations with the Mayor sessions throughout the summer. If you missed my May session, please call my office at 954 602-3198 for the next scheduled dates. Lastly, I want to recognize our Youth Advisory Council Members who will be moving on to College in September. It has truly been wonderful to have them represent our City with the professionalism they have all shown these past two years, I am wishing them all the best and the City of Miramar will always be here for each of them.

In keeping with my goal to have our youth prepared for this technical age, I’ve partnered for the second year in a row with Florida Vocational Institute to present the Mayor’s Summer Technology Boot Camp. It’s a two-week free session for Miramar High-Schoolers in 10th through 12th grade or recent graduates. Register at www.fvi.edu/summerbootcamp Because Miramar has a large aviation sector, we continue to expose our youth to the industry because there’s so much opportunity there. Our Aviation Academy provides hands-on experiences

education draws students from around the globe. Unilatina International College (UIC), located in the Miramar Park of Commerce, is a microcosm of the City of Miramar—international, culturally diverse, and vibrant. This family-owned private college offers associate and bachelor degree programs in business, travel & tourism, and communications & media—all with a unique focus on entrepreneurship. Its Unilatina Language Institute offers an English as a Second Language diploma program, as well as TOEFL preparation courses, and intensive English and Spanish programs. UIC attracts students from around the world -- Bangladesh, Romania, Albania, Vietnam, Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia among others, and local students from Miramar -- who are drawn to its unique holistic approach to education, its entrepreneurial curriculum focus and its dynamic Miramar location.

“The holistic approach goes beyond the traditional classroom, and nourishes the emotional, intuitive and physical needs of the student,” said Marcela Moyano, Ed.D, Communications, Marketing and Media Director for UIC. “Our model of holistic education allows students to expand their capacity to ‘think outside the box,’ and gives them the foundation to become entrepreneurs, be part of the labor market, or increase their language skills.” Unilatina partners with the City of Miramar to host their Entrepreneurial Hour Conference, an annual event that focuses on topics such as future of business, team building, networking and success stories from entrepreneurs. Proceeds from the event benefit a scholarship fund to help Miramar students attend UIC. “We have also worked with the Community Garden staff and the Police Department on various programs,” said Marcela. “It’s a wonderful community to be a part of—Miramar is such a perfect fit for us, and our students.”

PUBLISHER’S INSIGHT

Have a PERFECT Summer

I

t seemed like a few months ago that the new school year was just starting, but in a blink of an eye 10 months has passed. My wife and I have two children, one that just graduated eighth grade and another that just finished third grade. We are involved in our daughter’s school, so we see first hand the tremendous amount of people and hard work it takes to educate our children and keep them safe. From the school administrators and teachers, to the police officers and volunteers, we salute you and can’t thank you enough for what you do. If you have been reading my Publishers Insight over the past year, you will notice that I try to keep this page focused on the City, businesses, events, and the magazine. However, I need to be a little selfish for a moment and I hope you don’t mind. My oldest daughter Daniella, as I noted, just graduated from eighth grade. But in doing so she managed to attend everyday of school from Kindergarten to eighth grade without missing a day of school. Yes, she received perfect attendance for nine straight years and was given a wonderful award and recognition at her Graduation Ceremony. We started noticing after she had finished fourth grade and we challenged her to keep the streak going. But, I can honestly say there wasn’t a day that we had to drag her out of bed and beg her to go to school. Whether she felt like it or not she made a personal commitment to attend each and every day of school for nine years. So thank you for letting me share this with you, as I wanted her to know how proud my wife and I are of her accomplishment.

from this past school year and publish some of them in the next issue in Mid July. Try to keep them at about 75 to 100 words and we will try to get as many in as possible. Send your stories to: art@insidemiramar.com with your contact information. I hope everyone enjoyed the last issue of Inside Miramar as we grew from 24 to 32 pages, thus giving you the reader more City information and promoting more great local businesses. We also extended our distribution to reach all Miramar residents and businesses, which has always been the goal of the magazine. Enjoy all of the early Summer events the City is hosting, as well as the 4th of July fire works display, which is always a good time if you are in town. As always, try your best to support the businesses that advertise in Inside Miramar and let them know you saw their message in the magazine. I wish all of you a safe and wonderful summer with your family and friends and make sure you don’t forget to spoil Dad this Father’s Day in the City you call home. Sincerely,

So with that being said, I would like to read some of your terrific stories

Are Older Generations Really Not Selling Their Homes? any studies suggest one of the main reasons for the inventory shortage in today’s market of homes for sale is that older generations have chosen to “age in place” over moving. NAR’s findings show that Baby Boomers (43%) and the Silent Generation (12%) made up 56% of sellers in 2018! This means the majority of sellers last year were over the age of 54. This also shows these generations ARE moving!

The report also shared the reasons why they chose to move. According to the research, the top reason was a desire to be closer to friends and family. Once again, the report demonstrated that older generations are not keeping that 4-bedroom, 2-bath home. Instead, they are putting it on the market and moving on with their lives! If you are living in a house that no longer fits your needs, let’s get together to help you find a home that will!

INSIDE MIRAMAR - THE MAGAZINE

Message from Vice Mayor Davis ello Friends! It is a pleasure to be able to connect with you through this medium and provide updates from my office on a regular basis. I am pleased to have been able to pass legislation during my first Commission meeting (3/20/19) that provides funding for the implementation of body-cameras for Miramar PD, which has been long overdue. This will ensure transparency and accountability between the Police Department, the residents and the business community it has been tasked to serve and protect. The use of Body-cameras will also benefit officers and the City, as it will guard against frivolous law suits and ensure that both sides of a story are told. On May 2nd we celebrated Haitian-American Heritage month with a Haitian Cultural Celebration right here in the City of Miramar in conjunction with Community Access Center of Miramar, a non- profit organization. We are very much aware of how the various cultures that are represented here in this great City, contribute to the fabric that makes Miramar one of the best places to live, work and raise a family. May 5th marked another Cinco De Mayo, which recognizes the defeat of the French by Mexico back on May 5th, 1862. Though not such a big celebration in Mexico, it’s great to use this time to recognize Mexican culture and its colorful heritage. With the end of the school year and summer break fast approaching we took the time to recognize our hardworking teachers during Teacher Appreciation week at Miramar High. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work that all our teachers, administration and staff do all year to ensure the well-being of their students; our children!

We had the great privilege of hosting the Jamaica National Women’s Team, the Reggae Girlz from May 20 - 24 with a series of Send-Off Celebration fundraising events and activities in support of their qualification to the FIFA’s Women’s World Cup in France, June 2019. The celebration kicked off with an Airport Welcome at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, A Multi-Cultural Sports Summit at the Miramar Cultural Center, and a Send-off Celebration Fun-Day with exhibition matches at Ansin Sports Complex. With the Miramar community having such deep roots in Jamaica and the Caribbean overall, it was a natural connection to host the Reggae Girlz. We were honored to be a part of such a great experience. On Memorial Day, I joined Miramar United Methodist Church for their annual Memorial Day Picnic where there was food, games, music and fellowship... not to mention jelly coconuts! This June is recognized as Caribbean-American Heritage Month and the City of Miramar will host a number events to showcase Caribbean-American Heritage. These events include a local Caribbean Concert, June 8th at Shirley Branca Park, the Caribbean Village Festival, June 23rd at Miramar Regional Park and the Red Carpet Showing of the film “Sprinter”, a Jamaican drama, executive produced by Will & Jada Smith and directed by Storm Saulter, on June 28th. Please feel free to contact me on any matter at (954) 602 3155 Till we connect again… Your humble servant leader, Vice-Mayor Alexandra P. Davis

Woody's Bar-B-Q Open in Pines!

W

ith roots firmly planted in the Deep South, Woody’s Bar-B-Q has opted to move even DEEPER South. Marking the opening of its newest franchise location, Woody’s Bar-B-Q of Pembroke Pines will soon serve barbecue lovers in Broward and Dade Counties. Headquartered in Jacksonville, FL, leaders at the classic Southern barbecue chain are excited to see the reaction from South Floridians to its signature menu of slow-smoked meats and comfort food sides that fans have come to know and love since the company’s launch in 1980. Southwest Ranches residents, Roberta and Joel Padron are at the helm of the newest Woody’s Bar-B-Q franchise – which is located at 18283 Pines Boulevard in Pembroke Pines.

TAME: Where Dedication Thrives

T

AME Dance Academy's philosophy is to provide the highest quality of movement education to aspiring dancers throughout the Miramar and Pembroke Pines community. Created in 2015, under the direction of Teddy

Talbot and Luke Stockton, this program fosters beginner through advanced levels in ballet, jazz, modern, acrobatics, tap, pointe, hip-hop and contemporary for dancers ages three to adult. TAME instructors mentor students who are interested in higher education and professional careers in the arts. Here, the bond between art and entertainment is understood and explored.

I love making people happy, so the opening of Woody’s Bar-B-Q of Pembroke Pines is driven largely by my desire to do what I know and do it well for the enjoyment of others,” said Roberta Padron, the newest Woody’s Bar-B-Q franchisee. “I have been in the restaurant industry since my first job at 14 and I’ve always wanted to start a family business in which my whole family could be a part. Joel and I really like the support and learning curve that franchise ownership offers, and Woody’s fit exactly what we were looking for. It’s a family-owned company with high values and standards that has been in business for nearly 40 years. Most importantly, their food is delicious. In just a matter of weeks, we’ll be providing our guests with an amazing barbeque experience unlike any other in our area.” Padron believes that everyone loves great tasting food and amazing service, and she pledges that Woody’s Bar-B-Q of Pembroke Pines will offer both. Although expertly prepared barbecue is at the heart and soul of the operation, the restaurant will offer something for everyone on its extensive menu. She should know a thing or two about it, having worked in and/or managed restaurants since her early teens. This new restaurant represents an opportunity for her family to benefit from their combined experience, hard work and passion. The Padrons have strong ties to the community that surrounds their new restaurant. Both Roberta and Joel were born in Miami and grew up in Broward County, FL. The couple currently lives in Southwest Ranches which is less than 5 minutes from their new restaurant, offering them the chance to serve the community in which they live. In addition to its regular menu and brand-wide promotions featured throughout the year, Woody’s Bar-B-Q of Pembroke Pines plans to offer a “Kids Eat Free” night and large selection of local craft beers. “I can’t wait for our guests to try some of my personal favorites like the Smoked Wings in the signature Dallas sauce with our house made ranch dressing. There’s also the Angus Bacon Cheddar Burger, Fried Catfish, Memphis-style spare ribs, Fried Squash, and – of course – the Baby Back Ribs. I have yet to find something I don’t love on the menu!” added Padron. Roberta and Joel Padron are exactly what we look for in a Woody’s Bar-B-Q franchise family,” said Yolanda Mills-Mawman, President and Co-Founder of the classic Southern barbecue chain. “They offer a wealth of industry experience, they know their audience and they have the drive to succeed.” For more information, visit our website at www.Woodys.com 18283 Pines Blvd, Pembroke Pines, FL 33029 | (954) 500-4227

While the academy offers the opportunity for select students to work in a competitive dance company, their goal is not only to win awards, but more importantly to create artists. The performance opportunities offered are meant to cultivate students' technique as well as what they, as individuals, have to express as movement artists. TAME Dance Company is a group of hand selected, elite movement artists from TAME Dance Academy who are ready to take their stage experience to the next level. Company members at TAME are chosen by audition only, then separated into smaller groups based on level and age. The Company dancers train a minimum of six hours per week in technique classes in addition to their rehearsals. Teddy and Luke believe a strong foundation in technique lends knowledge that will inform artistic movement and choreography learned from their esteemed faculty and guest choreographers. Every season, TAME is proud to bring numerous industry professionals from New York, Los Angeles and beyond to teach and choreograph on our students. The creative team at the school believes this exposure to the professional world only aids in students' future successes. It is always the goal at TAME to provide the highest quality training, and to foster and nurture a sense of passion, integrity and love for the performing arts. TAME's incentive is to aid dedicated, passionate youth into becoming hardworking, responsible adults, through the practice of discipline and respect in the studio. With exceptional classes, various performance opportunities and exposure to renowned instructors, choreographers, and working professionals, students have access to what is needed to excel as professionals in the dance world, from concert to commercial work. TAME Dance Academy provides an inviting atmosphere for anyone wanting to begin or continue their movement education. From those who consider dance a fun hobby, to students pursuing a career in the arts, TAME has something to offer everyone! With personalized attention, a positive environment, and encouraging instructors, TAME is your local gem for all things dance education. I got a boy for Chritstmas 6 years ago, and he is my favorite person, altough he has graduted from college and is working in Arizona. I miss him, but tolerate his parents because they feed me. My favorite toy is Bunny, and sometimes I insist on taking him with us when we walk the neighborhood. Although I am large, and weigh 130 lbs., I am very gentle. I am afraid of feathers and curly sticks that look like snakes. I do miss Colorado and the snow, but have also loved the last 2 years living in Miramar. INSIDE MIRAMAR - THE MAGAZINE

City Manager's Message

D

ear Miramar Residents: It is an honor to be your City Manager and continue to charge the City’s vision to a greater Miramar. In the last issue of Inside Miramar, I shared with you my background and experience working as a public servant for more than 40 years. I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you the City’s Vision and how the Office of the City Manager supports our most valued stakeholder, YOU! On Thursday, May 9th, the City hosted a Visioning Session where staff presented the future of Miramar to our City Commission, City staff, residents and businesses. We are excited to keep the City moving forward and providing the best quality of life for our residents and greater opportunities to ensure sustainable growth and development (and redevelopment) for current and prospective businesses. You can view the presentation on our YouTube Channel (www.youtube.com/ItsRightHereInMiramar) or Miramar TV (Comcast Channel 78 or www.MiramarFL.gov/MiramarTV) at 1PM or 6PM daily. Miramar has the unique distinction of being one of the fastest growing and most diverse communities in the nation. Over the years, it has dealt with many challenges, but overcame them through collaboration, finding common ground amongst various stakeholders and seeking inclusiveness for all parties.

We are proud to provide the services and resources that you depend on to live, work and play in the beautiful City of Miramar. The Office of the City Manager is responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of services, including recommending and carrying out the policies and ordinances of the City Commission. It is the responsibility of this Office to advise the Commission on the City's financial condition and to submit the annual operating and capital improvement program budgets to them. This Office also provides effective communication between the City Commission, employees, residents and the general public and oversees the management of all City departments. These processes allow us to keep with our commitment to the ongoing implementation of best practices in all City operations. It is our belief that our City’s greatest attribute comes from our diverse residents with different points of view believing in one City. As such, we continue to work to establish collaboration, find consensus and achieve inclusiveness to become the best Miramar possible. The City looks forward to a productive summer as we prepare for 2020. We appreciate your support as we work to make Miramar the shining example of exceptional municipal service. Please join me in helping our Mayor, Vice Mayor, Commission and City staff write Miramar’s next chapter.

As a City, we are on the cusp of even greater opportunities and results, with major projects and initiatives such as: Historic Miramar Master Plan; Smart City Enhancements; Billboards; Development of Block 2 at Miramar Town Center; a Dog Park at Miramar Regional Park; Senior, Affordable and Workforce Housing opportunities—just to name a few.

he Miramar Police Department’s Chaplains Program was established to provide aid and comfort to those in need and to provide a calm and thoughtful presence in times of stress, hardship and grief. For nearly twenty years, the department has had a well-staffed Chaplains Program, volunteers from our community representing various faiths. We have had Protestant, Jewish and Catholic chaplains. Although the chaplains are trained clergy or lay pastors of a recognized religious denomination, who are active in their local churches, they serve in a nondenominational role when representing the police department. They do not promote their religion to those they minister to. All our chaplain volunteers serve in three main roles: The primary purpose is to serve police officers and their families. Chaplains are there for support, for counsel, and to share in special life events. They offer complete confidentiality for families that need an extra ear to talk to and share life challenges and concerns. The Chaplaincy Program also represents the city and department at special functions, by offering prayers of invocations and/or benedictions or serving other roles in community events. Chaplains also serve our community, coming alongside police officers in special crisis situations such as death notifications, offering words of comfort during tragedies or to families facing challenging situations.

Police Chaplains. Due to the enormous responsibility and the sensitive confidential nature of the work, the selection process for membership and assignment to the Chaplains Program reflects the highest professional standards. Membership to the unit is limited to those professionals having a minimum of five years experience as an active minister. We have a total of four chaplains. Our Senior Chaplain, Mark Hattabaugh also serves with the Occupational Chaplains of America as the Commander for Law Enforcement and Fire Personnel setting up chaplaincy programs all across the United States of America and offering support to the command staffs working on opening new Chaplaincy programs. Chaplain Hattabaugh speaks Spanish and Portuguese fluently and serves as the Senior Pastor of the Pentecostal Church of Cooper City. Chaplain Gyrgleston Barnes is the Sr. Pastor of Faith Tabernacle in Ft. Lauderdale; Chaplain Donald King is the Senior Pastor of New Life in Miami; and Chaplain Earl Richards is with Miracles through Prayer and Faith Ministries in Pembroke Pines. The Miramar Police Department is privileged to have chaplains who volunteer their time and effort to serve this department, this community and even disaster-stricken areas abroad. For further information on the Chaplains Unit, please contact Office of the Chief at 954-602-4400.

The Miramar Police Department supports the Chaplaincy Program by providing the necessary training and materials to maintain its proficiency All our chaplains must go through certification. They receive ongoing training with the department and with the International Conference of

Summer Time Sports Reflection by Chris Koval - Publisher

D

uring the DOG DAYS OF SUMMER it gives me time to pause, reflect and share with you, the loyal reader of Inside Miramar what’s on my SPORTS MIND…

Will Jorge Mas and David Beckham ever get INTER MIAMI CF off the ground? As an old Ft. Lauderdale Strikers fan, I would love to watch our new team thrive and bring excitement to a rich soccer area like South Florida. Welcome to town Josh Rosen. What the Dolphins pulled off in this years draft was simply brilliant. Getting Christian Wilkins, DL, from Clemson with the 13th pick was not only a huge need but he will fill a leadership role for many years to come. You have to love grabbing an OL from Wisconsin in the 3rd round. Michael Deiter is his name and hopefully he is ready to go by week one. What the Dolphins gave up, very little to possibly land their franchise QB in Josh Rosen was tremendous. He has a one-year trial to show what he can do on the field, and with his contract—so team friendly—this was a no brainer for the a team looking for a QB, well, since Danny Boy.

IN IDER The Marlins have been playing some really good baseball the last month. No, it’s not a typo. Since starting the season with the worst record in baseball the team started a nice winning streak and have been playing much more consistent. This year has been about developing the young pitchers and stocking up the farm system again, and with fingers crossed maybe it’s starting to work. They drafted a polished college out fielder named J.J. Bleday out of Vanderbilt with the 4th overall pick last week. He led the nation in Home Runs and the Marlins can certainly use some more offense. It might be ready to play for the big club by next year. Tiger Woods will get me through the Dog Days until football season starts. Wasn’t that awesome watching Tiger win the Masters again in April? Whether you like him or not, there is nobody that brings this much excitement to the PGA Tour. With two Majors left this season it should be a fun ride up until Dolphins season starts in August.
