Message from Mayor Wayne M. Messam Greetings Miramarians

It

has been over a year since we have had to endure the effects of the Coronavirus. We’ve lost loved ones, colleagues, friends and others we didn’t even know but felt sadness for their loss. Thousands of COVID-19 survivors will never be the same due to lingering physical effects of having been infected. Our first responders including fire, police, doctors, nurses and scientists risked their lives to help save ours in what began as an unknown but is now at least somewhat understood. I reflect on the negative impacts of the pandemic, but I remain optimistic. Our scientists have developed several vaccine options that, while not eliminating the virus, they all provide life saving and illness protection in most cases. We now know if you take the vaccine, your chances of survival are certainly better than not having taken the vaccine and yet, there is still some vaccination hesitancy. For various reasons, the unvaccinated for valid reasons or not, put themselves and others at risk. I refrain from passing judgement for getting the vaccine is truly a personal decision. However, the data overwhelmingly supports a case for those that are unvaccinated, to do so. Our Health Departments and the CDC confirm that the recent surge in COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations is being driven by those who are unvaccinated. For breakthrough cases of vaccinated individuals, the data supports far fewer deaths and the need to be hospitalized. I encourage all residents who are medically qualified to get the vaccine to get vaccinated. For the sake of our loved ones and community, we don’t have to continue to see deaths and our hospitals don’t have to be overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients.

If you haven’t been vaccinated, I encourage you to continue to consult your medical professional to get the information you need to get the vaccine. There are numerous locations where you can get the vaccine, for free, no appointment needed - https://miramarfl.gov/1716/Covid-19Vaccine-and-Testing While the City of Miramar continues to observe CDC Guidelines with social distancing, masks and sanitizing protocols, we continue to slowly return to normal with precautions. With that said, I have a special invitation to share. Hard to believe but this year marked the 20th Anniversary of 9/11. The City of Miramar is in possession of two relics from the World Trade Center and we have dedicated a site at Miramar Regional Park for their permanent placement. If you would like to be a part of the City of Miramar 9/11 Memorial with a brick paver or bench that you are welcome to purchase as a part of the memorial in your namesake or in the name of a love one. For more information please go to 911bricksponsor.eventbrite.com For those of you who love chess, the Mayors Chess Challenge is back. On October 23rd, from 9 to 11 am., come test your skills against chess fans of all ages. INSIDE MIRAMAR/PEMBROKE PINES - THE MAGAZINE

Message from Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis Hello Miramar!

I am grateful to be able to reach you through this medium once more. We must continue to wear our masks when required, social distance, practice proper hygiene and follow the CDC guidelines as new COVID-19 variants re-threaten our lively hood. I had the privilege of celebrating heritage and culture with our Colombian brothers and sisters in the City of Miramar and the City of Weston on July 17th. I enjoyed myself dancing and eating great food, but most importantly, seeing all my friends in the Hispanic/Latin community. Que Viva Colombia! I am pleased to have presented a Temporary Protection Status (TPS) Information Session in collaboration with Commissioner Dale Holness and Florida State Rep, Marie Woodson on July 29th. The session provided the residents of Miramar and surrounding areas valuable information on the TPS process; status of the TPS portal, documents needed for TPS, organizations providing assistance and future upcoming free events. Kudos to our Miramar Police Department for another successful Community & Cops event on July 31st at the Presidente Plaza. We had a great day visiting the businesses introducing them to their community Resource Officers as well as listening to any concerns they may have had. We kicked off August with the Jamaica 59th Pre-Independence Day Fete at Miramar Regional Park Corporate Pavilion. It was a day for everyone to experience Jamaica’s sound system culture and celebrate the Island’s independence with a family fun zone, food vendors and music. I was proud to sponsor the City’s Free Virtual & In-person Job & Education Fair on August 3rd at the Miramar Cultural Center. We had over 40 companies such as Amazon, WastePro, US Customs Border & Protection, Comcast and JBL Audio and 18 university and colleges, such as Barry, FIU and Nova ready to hire and assist in the transition into new jobs and career fields.

The Miramar Cultural Center featured an exhibition of maquettes by Basil Watson from June 1st -August 15th. Mr. Watson is a highly regarded Jamaican sculpture recognized for his piece of Usain Bolt, at the Jamaican National Stadium, and recently his sculpture of Martin Luther King “Hope Moving Forward” in Atlanta. I was pleased to sponsor the closing reception on August 5th which was a joint reception and moderated discussion as we celebrated Jamaica’s Independence. On August 16th I hosted a CommUnity Forum, sharing information on voting rights, property fraud and the right to protest with a virtual panel that included Senator Shevrin Jones, Florida State Senator District 35; Marie Woodson, Florida State Rep District 101; Supervisor Scott, Broward County Supervisor of Elections; Marty Kiar, Property Appraiser and moderated by Commissioner Dale Holness, Broward County District 9. On September 5th the renaming of SW 62 Ave as Alcee L. Hastings Ave was a complete success with his family and the community coming together to honor this legend! I am grateful to have worked on this initiative as not only a supporter of the congressman, but as a dear friend. May he rest in peace. UPCOMING EVENTS HOSTED BY COMMISSIONER ALEXANDRA P. Reflections on 9/11 On September 11, 2001, Miramar Police Captain Mike Yepez was wearing a different uniform. He was working as a New York City Police Department (NYPD) patrol officer. Below is his personal story of that fateful day: I worked the night shift and would arrive home at around 6:30-7AM, always unplugging my home phone to sleep. For some unknown reason I didn’t that day. At around 8 a.m. I received a call from my lieutenant and was told to come in for court.

Our assignment was to help with rescue efforts. Exhausted from the previous shift and with no sleep, I worked for another 38 hours. We all wanted to save someone. That’s what pushed us to continue working, while breathing in soot. At that point we had no masks, and we didn’t care. After I was relieved of duty and was able to go home, I found out Jenny had survived. She had walked out of her building and walked for hours and hours to her parents’ home in New Jersey. For the next three months many of us worked twelve hour shifts with no days off. I was on autopilot and didn’t have the leisure to feel anything. It took six months for what occurred to really sink in.

As I was driving on the Verranzano Bridge, listening to the radio, I heard about a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. I thought it was a bad joke until I looked up and saw the smoke and the second plane strike the other tower. I knew then it was no accident.

Jenny didn’t have a job anymore and decided to stay with her parents in their second home in Miramar. Nine months later I decided to give South Florida a try. I love New York, but 9/11 had forever changed the course of my life and career.

My fiancé at the time, Jenny, was working at the World Trade Center building 7. Along with the towers, that building collapsed as well. I was concerned and unable to get a hold of her.

The Miramar Police Department became my home in 2002. When asked to write about my 9/11 experience, I pulled an old picture of me in my NYPD uniform. The kid in that picture had no idea what he was getting himself into. However, every time he put that uniform on, he enjoyed every minute of it and did it with pride and honor.

Walking into the 66 Precinct, everyone was crying. There was an utter silence in the locker room though that was unusual. Fifteen of us squeezed into a transport van and headed toward the towers. Vehicles in the Battery Tunnel were not moving, and we decided to walk through the tunnel into Manhattan. The site looked like a scene from a movie… a cloud of dust; people running, screaming, crying; chaos. It seemed unreal and I kept thinking about how to get into contact with Jenny.

ĵ 14

We often hear the term “Never Forget.” On this 20th anniversary of 9/11, I will never forget the pride we felt to be an American at that time. It didn’t matter what your background was or what uniform you were wearing that day. We all came together and showed the world the compassion we had for each other.

Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety Pembroke Pines FL. – Every year the Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department, along with firefighters and safety advocates nationwide, joins forces with the NFPA during Fire Prevention Week. This year Fire Prevention Week runs from October 3-9th, and the theme, Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety, aims to remind everyone of the importance of taking the right actions to keep themselves and those around them safe. Do you know the sounds of Fire Safety? If there is a beep or a chirp coming out of your smoke or carbon monoxide alarm do you know what it means? Knowing the difference between these sounds can be lifesaving. The Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department encourages all residents to take interest and embrace this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme. It is of extreme importance that you know the different sounds, what they mean and make sure that everyone in your home understands the sounds of the alarm and how to respond. When an alarm makes a sound it usually means that we must take action. Here are a few safety tips that should help you “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety”: • A loud and continuous set of three loud beeps. Means there is smoke or fire and you need to get out quickly. Remember in the case of a fire you need to get out, dial 911 and stay out! Fire spreads quickly and you only have a few minutes to exit your home.

• A single chirp every 30 to 60 seconds means that the battery is low and must be replaced. A good rule of thumb is to change the batteries in your alarms the two times a year you change your clocks. • All smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years. If you cannot remember how old the unit is, replace it! • Chirping that continues after the alarm has been replaced means that the alarm is at the end of its life and should be replaced. • If you have members in your family that are deaf, hard of hearing or have other sensory impairments make sure that your smoke and CO alarms meet their needs. There are bed shaker alarms as well as ones that use strobe lights to alert of fire and smoke. Additionally make sure you and your family have a home fire escape plan and that all household members are familiar with it. In the case of a fire in your home mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Your home fire escape plan should be practiced regularly and should include knowing two ways out of each room, practicing getting low and go, having a family meeting place which should be an immobile object such as a tree, light post, stop sign or neighbors home, and making sure everyone understands the importance of getting out, staying out and dialing 911. Remember fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Children, teens, adults and the elderly are all at risk in a fire, knowing about fire prevention and how to stay safe in the case of a fire makes all the difference.

As Growth and Development Continues, Where is the Vision?

A

s the Fall season gets fully underway, many of us are happy to see seasonal activities returning to almost-normal, pre-pandemic levels. These include schools reopening, team sports and activities starting up, retail establishments expanding their hours and more. However, one emerging and unexpected consequence of these activities is the impact many of them are having on the traffic patterns across many Pembroke Pines communities and neighborhoods. Specifically, school is back in session which means hundreds of cars are now on the roads in the morning and late afternoon – adding congestion, consternation, and confusion to a city that at best, is barely able to support the amount of vehicles on our roadways on a regular daily basis. If you follow social media platforms, the school traffic situation is a hot issue generating hundreds of comments, complaints, and concerns from residents due to the disruption it’s causing all across Pembroke Pines and Miramar. The bottom line is that the return to school after a nearly 2-year gap has resulted in huge traffic woes that city officials seem reluctant to acknowledge, let alone find solutions for. As the level of feedback and commentary from citizens has continued to grow, and the school/traffic issues have not gone away weeks after schools have reopened,

this topic is finally starting to get the attention of elected officials in Pembroke Pines. Whether or not these officials can offer any sort of solution to address the traffic concerns remains to be seen, but the issues we are facing raise the question of how did we get here in the first place? City officials are quick to point out that all new development proposals come with fully reviewed traffic studies, impact assessments, school reviews, etc. Clearly there is a very obvious connection between the non-stop, dense growth happening across the City and the lack of planning to really understand the impacts any new development will have to residents, resources, the environment, retailers and more. Time and time again, these proposed developments are sold as impact free and yet they continue to cause traffic and other issues. The solution is that as a growing city, we need a holistic vision of how to preserve our city’s existing beauty while continuing to offer the same high level of service. Without this vision, we will continue to struggle with issues like terrible traffic, environmental impacts, unchecked development and more. Having a forward looking plan and vision for our city that takes into account the needs of our existing communities, our families, and our businesses that call Pembroke Pines home is needed and is currently lacking. That’s where Friends of the Pines can help – we have organized around the need to push our city officials to create a long-term, holistic understanding of the future of our city. If you are passionate about the future of our city, please connect with us to stay engaged, aware, and informed and most importantly, to make your voice heard.
