Message from Mayor Wayne M. Messam

reetings My Fellow Miramarians: It has been a trying year and a half but thankfully, our city is moving forward and the path is clearer. As COVID-19 vaccines become more available, I wanted to let you know what is happening in our great city that will give you guidance regarding COVID-19 testing and vaccinations.

For quite some time, we’ve had testing sites at Shirley Branca Park in Historic Miramar and the CVS at Miramar Parkway and Flamingo Road and that will continue. In addition, I was able to secure a permanent vaccine location at Vizcaya Park in Miramar, 14200 SW 55th Street, Miramar FL 33027. Our vaccination site provides 200 doses per day and that allocation is expected to increase to 400 doses in the coming weeks.

The State-Run site gives the community access to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines for both the first and second doses. Named the Miramar Health Equity Site, it is open 7 day per week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on a first come, first served basis, No appointment needed. Please remember to bring proof of Florida residency such as a Florida Driver’s license. If you need additional information, please visit www.

We at the City are always trying to do our best on behalf of our wonderful residents and will continue to do so. Our number one priority is the safety and well-being of our residents.

I also wanted to let you know about some things we’ve been doing out of the Mayor’s office. Health & Fitness has always been a passion of mine personally and when I was elected Commissioner and subsequently Mayor of Miramar, I brought that effort to the residents as well. We began with the Annual 3k Run/Walk- Health & Fitness Fair and three years ago, increased that to a 5K Run-Health & Fitness

Fair. We were able to have our event this year, on a smaller, but nonethe-less, wonderfully successful scale. To help our residents release and heal, for about a month now, we’ve been offering Free Yoga on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. at City Hall Plaza, by the Botanical Garden. This has become so popular, we’ve decided to extend the sessions another 10 weeks and will possibly be adding a weeknight offering of Free Yoga as well. Sponsored by my office and led by Yogi Rocki Roland, the sessions are for enthusiasts of all levels. Whether you’ve been practicing yoga for years or newly interested, I invite you to join us. You won’t regret it.

My office continues to sponsor free Wi-Fi for families with school children who cannot afford to do so at this time. The program will continue for an additional six months, if you are a family in need, please contact your school administration and they will advise you. Please note, your school must be a Title 1 School in Miramar.

Lastly, Commissioner Winston F. Barnes and I co-hosted Vietnam Veterans Day on March 29th, in partnership with the Jr. ROTC at Everglades High School.

These phenomenal Veterans have not always been received as they should have been and Commissioner Barnes and I joined together to recognize our Vets and extended our thanks for all they’ve done on behalf of our country.

Message from Commissioner Davis

ello, my friends! As the pandemic continues to impact our lives, with mass testing and vaccination rollouts, we hope and pray for some normalcy. I am urging all those who can get vaccinated to do so, this way we will be closer to herd immunity. Please continue to wear your masks, social distance, and practice proper hygiene to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

As we entered March, I decided to continue with my Thursday “Drop & Go” initiative of weekly food distribution for those residents that are unable to attend the drive-thru site to receive free groceries.

Thankfully, I have been able to partner with Farm Share, Inc. to deliver this much needed aid to Miramar homes. I am grateful for all those who continue to volunteer their time to ensure that the food insecurities in our local community are met.

Sadly, on March 16, 2021 a series of mass shootings occurred at three massage parlors in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia where eight people were killed, six of whom were Asian-American women, and one other person was wounded. On March 20th, I stood in solidarity with our elected officials for a prayer vigil with our AsianAmerican brothers and sisters, condemning hate of any kind, in any form at Ghandi Square in Davie. I extend my prayers and condolences to the families and friends of this senseless tragedy.

On March 23rd, I joined my fellow Commissioners to open the new Harbour Lakes playground which was greatly needed for the residents in this area.

Vizcaya Park which is opened daily from 9am – 5pm and offering up to 400 Pfizer vaccines.

For the month of April, the Miramar Police Department and I once again partnered on a Gun Buyback Program, Guns for Funds, that allowed for individuals to safely dispose of their guns. Guns for Funds was 100% anonymous where individuals received up to a $100 in gift cards for each handgun surrendered and up to a $150 in gift for cards for each assault rifle or shotgun.

As part of the initiative, a Community & Cops event took place in Historic Miramar’s Bravo Supermarket, which gave residents an opportunity to meet their Community Resource Officers, where they found out what resources were available to them and how they could make an impact within their community with jobs and volunteer opportunities.

On April 13th, I was pleased to have been able to attend the grand opening of the historic police substation which I had proposed back in 2013. We now have equitable police presence and facilities in West Miramar, Central and East Miramar.

Child Exploitation – Online Awareness

s we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic, our children remain more connected to the internet than ever before. Making sure our children remain safe while engaging in online activity is of paramount importance. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children defines online enticement as an individual communicating with someone believed to be a child via the internet with the intent to commit a sexual offense or abduction. Online enticement can result in child sexual abuse, human trafficking, and other violent crimes against children. These devastating crimes have long-term effects on the children that are victimized, which can range from psychological, behavioral, and physical damage. Psychological impact may include depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other trauma-related concerns. Behavioral impact can include suicidal ideation, promiscuity, and other inappropriate sexual behavior, running away, drugs / alcohol use, aggressive / violent behavior, poor performance in school, truancy, defiant behavior, criminal behavior, and other maladaptive behavior. Physical impact may include STDs, HIV/AIDS, child pregnancy, inhibiting the child to have children as an adult, and other health-related issues.

ear Reader: We’re well into 2021 and while vaccines have us hopeful, the COVID-19 pandemic still has many feeling anxious, worried and isolated.

This month has been dedicated to bringing awareness to mental health issues such as these. During May, the City of Pembroke Pines along with National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) joins the national movement to raise awareness about mental health by issuing a proclamation recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month. In the Proclamation I strongly urge the citizens in our community to commit to increasing and understanding mental health illnesses, reducing stigma and discrimination, and promoting appreciation and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses.

Mental Health is often misunderstood because it is hard to define. It involves one’s social, emotional, and psychological well-being, and affects thoughts, feelings, and actions. When a person has positive mental health, they are better equipped to handle stress, be more productive, and realize their full potential. If you or a loved one is experiencing mental health issues, please visit resources we’ve posted on the city’s website at www.ppines.com. It’s also time to start preparing for Hurricane Season. On Sunday, May 9, 2021 through Saturday, May 15, 2021, we recognize National Hurricane Preparedness Week.

National Hurricane Preparedness is a nationwide effort to inform the public about hurricane hazards and to disseminate information and share knowledge which can be used to prepare and take action.

While Memorial Day may symbolize the start of summer for many, this is a special day set aside to honor all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. A Message from Fire Chief Picarello

F

ire is fast! Did you know a house fire can become deadly in as little as two minutes? Nowadays fires can grow quickly due to the items we have in our home. Much of our furniture and other belongings are made of plastic and other synthetics that are likely to burn faster in a fire, as well as produce deadly smoke. Other factors that aid the rapid growth of a fire in our homes are lightweight building materials, open design concepts, and flooring.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), over 80% of fire deaths occur in the home. Home fire sprinklers can save lives and property from fire; they respond quickly and effectively and often extinguish the fire before the fire department arrives.

Having a home safe from fire means you should have working smoke alarms, these work as your early warning.

Smoke alarms should be installed inside every bedroom, outside every sleeping area and on every level of your home. Test your smoke alarms once a month and change batteries when you change your clocks. Make sure you and your family have an escape plan, and practice the escape plan regularly with family members. Fire Sprinklers work as suppression and can put out a fire in one and a half minutes or less.

So how do home fire sprinklers work? It’s not like what we see on our T.V.’s and movies where they all activate simultaneously and you and

your home are left drenched in water. Each fire sprinkler has its own temperature- sensitive part which is composed of a fusible link. This fusible link is what holds the water. When there is a fire, the high heat from the fire is what causes that part to break open. The fire sprinkler closest to the fire activates when it reaches 135-165 degrees, and water will start flowing. This sprinkler should control the fire. Fire sprinklers are not activated by smoke alarms, steam, smoke, or other vapors.

There is far less damage from a fire in a home with fire sprinklers versus the one without. Fire, heat, smoke, and high-pressure water from Fire Department hoses can cause greater damage. Home fire sprinklers are affordable and easy to maintain.

ne of the perks of living in the City of Pembroke Pines is the access to natural beauty and wildlife, sometimes right outside your door. But that benefit is at risk, now more than ever, since there are so few remaining green spaces left in our City.

Some might say that the loss of space is a result of progress; that we need to pave over more and more of our remaining green spaces to attract residents, businesses, and employers to the City.

However, if you look around Pembroke Pines, there are vacancies of all sizes from the beginning of Pines Boulevard through to 202Nd Avenue – clearly there are plenty of existing spaces available to businesses of all sizes without needing to pave over any more open land. Recently several lots have been gobbled up by developers eager to cram as many townhomes onto them as they can seemingly get away with…much to the displeasure of the residents who live nearby and will be impacted by the increased noise, pollution, and traffic these dense developments will inevitably bring.

The real question is not one of “progress” but rather – when is enough development “enough”?

If the on-going rubber-stamped overdevelopment doesn’t benefit our

schools, our roads, our environment, our property values, or most of all, our neighbors who are already here – then why does it keep happening? Everyone knows that non-stop growth is never a good thing.

In this case, the City of Pembroke Pines seems unable to say NO to any development request, regardless of the impact to existing residents, ecosystems, and communities. As a result, the City seems to have no strategic plan for what it wants to BE for its residents.

Are we to become a city of grossly overdeveloped, over-paved, and over-congested roadways or are we to remain a community that values our remaining open spaces? What kind of future are we building as a city – one where the cozy relationships with lobbyists and developers continues unchecked or one in which the elected officials actually listen to their constituents who say enough to overdevelopment.
