Message from Mayor Wayne M. Messam My Fellow Miramarians

In March of this year, I had the opportunity to represent the great city of Miramar via invitations from the President of the Annual Investment Meeting, Mr. Dawood Al Shezawi and Broward County to attend a trade mission in Dubai. In addition, I was personally invited to be one of the panelists during AIM, which took place during the World Expo. The purpose of the trip was to explore trade opportunities between Miramar, Broward County and the City of Fort Lauderdale.

With Miramar having its own foreign trade zone at the Miramar Park of Commerce and hosting more Fortune 500 Companies than any city in the tri-county area, Miramar is well-positioned to expand and identify opportunities in this region. During the expo, we were successful in meeting with the ministers and undersecretaries of the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Health, DP World and the Chamber of Commerce in Sharjah.

Commerce. The Miramar team was able to share information about our city and what makes Miramar so great. In addition to these activities, our delegation was also joined by a Miramar based manufacturer who was successful in establishing contacts and business resources to assist their efforts to export to the Middle East.

I would say our first trip to Dubai was very successful, we will continue to build upon this new relationship and we will host a delegation from the U.A.E this month in Broward County to include His Excellency, Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, U.A.E. Minister of State for Foreign Trade.

The City of Miramar is a vibrant community not just because of our amazing residents but because of our strong and diverse economy. As the ambassador of our city, it gives me great pride to showcase all that we have to offer any prospective business that is looking to expand in South Florida. I am committed to expanding our reach and will never be complacent in our current success.

My number One objective is to ensure that Miramar remains a place that has exciting and high paying jobs. Trade missions like this help to achieve this goal.

Message from Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis Hello Friends & Neighbors!

I am grateful to be able to reach you through this medium once again. Thank you for your continuous support.

It was all about the Haitian Culture in the month of May as we celebrated the sights, sounds and tastes of the island nation at the Haitian Cultural Celebration. Three Miramar students were recognized as the winners of the Haitian Flag Day Student Art Contest! Each of their schools received a $400 check for art supplies, donated by our sponsors, Congresswoman Sheila CherfilusMcCormick and WID the headline act.

It was wonderful to host the City of Miramar’s in person Job & Education Fair on May 26th with top companies such as WSVN, Miramar Police, Amazon, Carnival Cruise and many more! The Job fair was a success with folks who reported that they landed a job on the spot!

Oh, what a night it was on May 27th when Stephanie Mills blew us away with hit after hit! The Harden Project was the opening act who prepared us for what was to come! It was great to see patrons from all over dance the night away.

The month of June was recognized as Caribbean American Heritage Month, and I had the pleasure of kicking it off with a media launch showcasing our Caribbean Heritage activities for the month with music and entertainment. We closed out the month with a little Taste of the Caribbean Islands at Vizcaya Park. A fun time was had by all as we incorporated new aspects this year with an art and book fair as well as culinary demos.

I am pleased to have worked alongside the City of Miramar’s Economic Development & Revitalization team, Business Inclusion & Diversity (BID) programs and in partnership with the MiramarPembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce to host the Biz Fit Roadshow and Virtual Workshop 2022. The Biz Fit workshop is designed to

help small businesses start, operate, and expand in Miramar and surrounding areas. The Biz Fit Roadshow offered businesses free information, resources, and incentives available to area businesses.

In association with Anzora’s Foundation, I hosted Gospel Groove Sunday featuring the Stellar Award-nominated Williams Singers from Indianapolis, Indiana, Comedian Natasha Calloway, Psalmist Ernest Gonder and other local artists at the Miramar Cultural Center.

This event was created to bring awareness and raise money for mental health. Attendees enjoyed a spectacular spirit-filled show as they supported our vendors and food trucks.

I was honored to have been selected as the Government Official of the year at the People Profile Awards Ceremony held on July 10th, 2022. I will continue to devote my time to public service and advocate for the residents and businesses I serve!

On August 5th, we danced the night away in all Black, Green and Gold at the Jamaica’s 60th Independence Day Fete celebrating 60 glorious years of Independence for Jamaica! It was a pleasure to have Stone Love perform and commemorate their 50th anniversary. During our Fun and Laughter intermissions, four lucky winners received roundtrip Spirit vouchers to any destination of their choosing! In partnership with Grace Foods, we also gave away Grace Food baskets to ten golden winners of our trivia. Attendees whined and dinned with our fantastic vendors who provided food, festivities, and fun. It was “one love” at the Jamaica’s 60th Independence Day Fete, can’t wait for year!

Behind The Badge: K-9 Kaiser K-9 Kaiser is a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois born in the Netherlands.

He is affectionate and playful and although he is seven years old, he still has the vitality and fun-loving innocence of a puppy. Kaiser is a dual-purpose dog specializing in patrol and explosives detection.

Although Kaiser has a sweet and playful personality, it’s all business when he’s at work. He has searched and located suspects of homicides, carjackings, robberies, and more.

As a bomb dog, Kaiser has assisted numerous agencies in explosives detection. He has worked NASCAR races, Superbowl LIV, the Fort Lauderdale Air Show, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Jazz in the Gardens, visits involving dignitaries and high-ranking government officials and more.

Kaiser has also responded to and cleared numerous bomb threats in schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Police K-9s are an essential part of law enforcement. Dogs, like Kaiser, are extraordinarily well-trained and are selected for their even temperament. They are brave, loyal, watchful and protective of their police officer handlers. K-9s offer a crucial advantage during dangerous searches, providing a greater reaction time for an officer. They also provide essential skills – with their noses – reducing the time needed

to search buildings, a perimeter or to find people, helping keep our community safe.

There is nothing more rewarding for Kaiser and his handler, Officer Edel Esponda, than doing demonstrations for elementary and middle school students. “When the children and teachers alike see Kaiser’s obedience, how he follows commands, how he heels and calmly listens as if he were a student himself, the teachers and children alike are in awe of him,” says Officer Esponda.

“I tell them that I have the best job in the police department because I get to bring my best friend to work with me. It’s not uncommon for Kaiser to be called back to that particular school for another demo.

Often, I receive packets of drawings from the children containing thank you notes and drawings often depicting the children with Kaiser, or me with Kaiser. This is very special to me,” Officer Esponda added.

At the Citizens’ Policy Academy, Kaiser has been a hit as well. The residents who attend are often impressed with how he could apprehend a decoy without incident, and the next minute have that same decoy petting him. Kaiser’s well-trained and is a consummate professional at his job.

He is not only Officer Esponda’s partner at work, Kaiser is part of the family. “Given his sweet and fun-loving nature, I often find my wife and Kaiser on the floor with Kaiser wrapping his front legs around her in a hug. He absolutely loves my wife and goes crazy when he sees her.”

Officer Esponda adds, “He is not only loved by my wife and I, but also by our respective families. Whenever he has been sick, we get calls from our children, our nephews and nieces, my parents, in-laws, and friends who love him as well.” Kaiser is truly cherished at home and at work, where he proudly serves our community.

REAL ESTATE – REAL talk with Rafael / Business Insider Over the past few years, we’ve seen the Real Estate Market really take off. From condos to single family homes, the residential market has most definitely been a seller’s market with prices trending up. But what caused the market shift and why did homes gain value in such a short period of time? There are several factors that contributed to the increase in property prices.

An influx of out-of-state buyers is one of the reasons we saw prices climb. Employees from northern states (with frigid climates) who transitioned from in-office to “remote” or work-from-home employees during the pandemic made their way to Florida (with our tropical climate). This surge in buyers caused a strain on South Florida’s already limited Real Estate inventory causing prices to go up.

International and domestic investors also began exploring opportunities in our State and especially in South Florida. Looking to find opportunities for financial gain, investors expanded their search from multi-family homes and apartment buildings to add single-family homes to their portfolios. Popular home rental apps like Airbnb and Vrbo became the go-to during the pandemic for people who wanted to vacation but didn’t want to expose themselves to the large crowds in hotels. Investors took note of this increase and began looking to acquire more single-family homes and condos to list on these apps.

The financial markets also contributed to the rise in property values.

Lower interest rates helped to offset the higher home values allowing buyers to maintain lower mortgage payments. Lenders were working around the clock to process loan applications while the rates were

below 3%. Many homeowners also took advantage of the low interest rates and refinanced their existing mortgages, many choosing to go from a 30-year loan to a 15-year loan while keeping the same or even lower mortgage monthly payment.

As the summer comes to a close, home prices have leveled off a bit though we continue seeing increases in pockets throughout South Florida. Here in Miramar and Pembroke Pines, the continued growth within our two cities has helped to alleviate the demand. Electric Vehicle Charging Safety Tips Are you thinking of buying an electric vehicle (EV)? Here are steps you can take to lower your risk of fire and electric shock injury related to charging EVs. Before buying an EV, have a qualified electrician install: • A new, dedicated circuit for your EV charging device.

Older home wiring may not be suitable for use with EV supply equipment.

• Level II charging devices (if that is your preferred charging method).

Charging EVs:

• Follow manufacturer’s guidelines when charging your vehicle.

Check with your local dealer if you need additional information.

• Purchase a charging device that is certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

• Plug Level I EV chargers directly into an outlet designed to handle the amperage of the charging device. Never use a multiplug adapter or extension cord.

• Install a residual current device with the charging unit. It will turn off the power if a fault is detected and help prevent a fire.

• Place all charging device components out of reach of children when not in use.

• Maintain the components of your charging station according to the manufacturer’s maintenance guidelines. Signs of excessive wear may indicate a potential shock hazard. Never use an EV charger with obvious signs of damage.

• Cover the EV charging station outlet to stop water from entering.

Check the manufacturer’s guidelines to make sure it is safe to charge your EV in wet conditions.

Home EV charging types

There are 2 types of home charging: Level 1 and Level 2.

• Level 1 uses the charger included with the EV. These chargers are plugged into a standard 120-volt outlet.

• Level 2 charging uses a charger that is sold separately from the EV and allows for faster charging times. They are plugged into a 240-volt outlet.

Charging an EV is safe when done with certified equipment.

By following these tips, you can lower your risk of having an associated fire or an electric shock injury.

What’s Happening in Miramar: Taste of The Caribbean Islands Rocked Miramar!

Caribbean American Heritage Month was in full swing in the City of Miramar for the month of June and culminated with a new and improved signature event, Taste of the Caribbean Islands, hosted by Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis.

Commissioner Alexandra Davis stated, “This year’s event was bigger and better. We added new elements such as a book and art fair featuring books from A. P. Wright and David Muir. Featured artists were, Richard Blackford, Mark ‘Renaissance’ Cameron and KayAnn Dukhran Lewis. In addition, the Children’s Trust donated and distributed free books. Also added were culinary demonstrations from renowned Caribbean Chefs such as Suzzanne Barr from Canada and Khalil Campbell from Jamaica, who was accompanied by students from the Jamaican University of Technology School of Hospitality. A special cultural presentation of Jamaican folklore was given by Steve Higgins and the Tallawah Mento Band.”

The sound of Caribbean music filled the air with sounds from reggae, soca, salsa, and merengue. Event attendees enjoyed performances by the USVI Moko Jumbie Stilt dancers, Bahamian Junkanoo Band, Soca Fitness group, Bahamian Julien Believe, Gianpaul & Latin Soul Band, Reggae star Lee Kelly & Dwhas Band, DJ Sinistar and DJ Tony X of the Miami Dream Team, steel drum music from Steel Away and International headliner out of Trinidad and Tobago, the Queen of Bacchanal, Destra Garcia.

Deputy Consul General of Grenada, Dianne C. Perrotte and Consul General of Jamaica, Oliver Mair were present to share in the colorful festivities of this Caribbean event.

A few notes to remember: Children should never walk behind a school bus when approaching at a bus stop. And, parents are encouraged to visit the bus stop and show the child where to wait safely for the bus which is at least six feet (or three giant steps) away from the curb. The bus stop is not a place to run or play. If driving behind a bus, allow a greater following distance than if driving behind a car. It will allow more time to stop once the red lights flash and the STOP arm is extended. The area 10 feet around a school bus is reportedly the most dangerous for children so it’s important for drivers to stop far enough back to allow them space to safely enter and exit the bus.

Back to school means sharing the road with school buses, more parents taking children to and from school and even children on bikes.

Please be aware of entering school zones, slow down near bus stops, be aware of children in the area, and follow bus safety rules to ensure a safe school year.

Subaru of Pembroke Pines Donates More Than $108,000 to Hometown Charities During the 2021/2022 Subaru Share the Love® Campaign

This year, Subaru of Pembroke Pines has donated $108,000 to hometown charities including Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and the Humane Society of Broward County that was raised during its Subaru Share the Love® campaign. Held annually, the Subaru Share the Love® campaign ran from Nov. 18, 2021, through Jan. 3, 2022. For every vehicle purchase or lease, Subaru donates $250 to a hometown charity of the customer’s choosing. Check presentations took place on June 7 at Subaru of Pembroke Pines.

As the largest donor to the Subaru Share the Love program in the nation, Subaru of Pembroke Pines has donated a staggering $1.4 million to date to the local community.

Recognizing the diverse needs of the community in its own backyard, Subaru of Pembroke Pines actively supports a number of local initiatives year-round.

During the 2021/2022 Subaru Share the Love campaign, Subaru of Pembroke Pines together with Subaru of America donated over $84,000 to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and $24,000 to the Humane Society of Broward County, totaling more than $108,000. Since 2018, Subaru of Pembroke Pines has donated more than $543,200 to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. This year’s campaign also included the new addition of the Humane Society of Broward County as a hometown charity.

Every year, Subaru of Pembroke Pines owner and operator Craig Zinn Automotive Group generously matches the amount raised by the campaign. This year’s campaign celebrated a kickoff luncheon in November at the dealership

that was attended by representatives from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and the Humane Society of Broward County, that raised awareness and shared best practices of how to best support the Subaru Share the Love campaign.

“The Subaru Share the Love campaign is very important to helping many worthy causes, and we at Subaru of Pembroke Pines and the Craig Zinn Automotive Group are pleased to have once again participated in the campaign,” said Craig Zinn. “By continuing to raise funds for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, and now the Humane Society of Broward County, our goal is to help those in need in our local community.”
