Message from Mayor Wayne M. Messam Miramarians

B

efore I get into this month’s column, I would like to say, Thank You! I’m grateful for the trust you have placed in me to lead our city as Mayor. This month is my 11th year of service, being initially elected as a City Commissioner in 2011. When the voters of our city elected me to be Mayor in 2015, my number one priority was to continue the progress and lay the foundation and infrastructure for the next 30 years. Well, property values continue to go up, corporations with high-paying jobs continue to choose Miramar even during the pandemic, we’ve made a number of improvements to the infrastructure in Historic Miramar with plans for so much more. The past eleven years have been a blessing and together we will continue our progress. So, Thank You! In the immediate future, I have made several proposals that will ensure Miramar’s prosperity, relevance and sustainability.

They include infrastructure investments that prepare us for the advancements in transportation infrastructure, economic development, continued redevelopment of Historic Miramar, Workforce Development and Innovation. I will explain further in my upcoming newsletter. In the meantime, do know these proposals include an Innovation Village, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Master Plan and Roadway Improvements.

Over the past 11 years, residents have come to know me as a person who focuses on the matters that create jobs, youth development, infrastructure improvements and economic

development. Leading a city in partnership with our residents requires collaboration and vision. When we look at the 2013 Revenue Bond, it was highly criticized by those who failed to have a forward outlook on investing in ourselves despite a tough economic climate. Today, because of that bold move back in 2013, the city has 2 new police facilities, a new fire station, a new water treatment plant, several renovated parks and improved storm water drainage in Historic Miramar. I remind us of our journey because I am asking all residents to join me again in 2022 as I push forward to make the case on why Miramar should prepare for the future now. That future is one that will include electric and autonomous vehicles making up 40% of vehicles by 2030. A future that will need a workforce that has the critical skills needed by emerging technologies.

Can you imagine Miramar being the Venture Capital of South Florida or even our own cryptocurrency? Well together, there is nothing we can’t do. Will you join me?

Message from Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis Hello Miramar! I am grateful to be able to reach you through this medium once more. Let’s continue to wear our masks

when required, social distance, practice proper hygiene and follow the CDC guidelines as we start out the new year, 2022!

On January 17th, we celebrated Martin Luther King JR.’s legacy and commitment to equality for all people, we came together as a city had a motorcade which included City of Miramar officials, police, fire, and community partners. As Dr. King would say, “The time is always right to do what is right.”

This February I have planned a series of events to celebrate Black History Month and Reggae Month under the theme “Black History Meets Reggae”. Our annual launch took place on February 2nd with previews of the artists opening for main acts, Protoje, Afro B and EIX. The Community ID program was held on February 5th at the City Hall from 9am to 3pm with Broward Legal Aide. The ID provides card holders with a verifiable form of identification that can be used as a tool by law enforcement, health centers, schools, nonprofits, businesses, and cultural arts organizations to better identify, serve, and protect them.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

February 25th at Shirley Branca Park 6900 Miramar Pkwy 7pm-11pm to celebrate February as Reggae Month and Black History Month. Five finalists will compete in a “winner takes all” sound clash with a cash prize going to the victor.

AFRO-CARIB FESTIVAL I am excited to announce the return of the Afro Carib Festival on Saturday, February 26, 2022, from 7pm-11pm at the Amphitheater at Miramar Regional Park located at 16801 Miramar Parkway.

Grammy nominated and contemporary Reggae superstar Protoje, Afro beats star Afro B known for his hit song, “Drogba (Joanna)” and Puerto Rican Reggaeton artist EIX, will headline the highly anticipated event that celebrates Black History Month through the music which represents South Florida’s unique combination of Black cultures. Tickets starting at $15 are on sale at afrocaribfestmiramar.com, while supplies last. Limited VIP tickets are available for $45. Parking is $10.

Miramar Police: Committed to the safety of our schools With four months left in the 2021-2022 school year, we would like to take this time to remind parents/guardians of an important conversation to have with your children concerning threats of violence. This school year alone, the Miramar Police Department has investigated numerous cases and arrested several students for making such threats.

After investigations have been conducted, the majority of these threats have proved not to be credible. Most students making threats have motives ranging from wanting to disrupt a school function to making the threat as a prank. They fail to realize that their actions can have devastating consequences, putting not only the public, but their lives at risk. Those making threats also fail to realize the loss of valuable law enforcement resources that could have been directed to solving or preventing other crimes, and the emotional distress caused to the entire community.

We recommend that you: • Remind your child that any threat made will be thoroughly investigated and the consequences are severe, affecting more than just their education and future career choices, even if the child’s intentions were to be humorous. Threats can come in the form of conversations, writings, emails/text messages, and/or social media posts using suggestive words or images.

• Be receptive to answering your child’s questions and make sure they know the lines of communication with you and our department are open to discuss any aspect of a school threat.

• Monitor your child’s social media accounts and talk to him/her about using social media responsibly.

• If you see something, say something: report any suspicious activity immediately.

Do not forward or share the threat until the proper authorities have had a chance to investigate it. Doing so could cause panic or spread misinformation.

We applaud students who come forward to report suspicious activity and want to express our gratitude for your support of our officers and staff. We truly appreciate the trust you have given the Miramar Police Department in caring for your children.

The Miramar Police Department has always been committed to the safety and future of our children. We were the first agency in Broward County to provide full-time SROs at every public school and have had a school resource officer (SRO) program for decades. Today, our public and charter schools all benefit from the fundamental concept of the SRO program - having students and faculty interact with officers on a day-to-day basis, thus building trust and developing relationships with the youth of our community. Unfortunately, no school district is immune to threats or acts of violence. We must all remain vigilant.

Message from Mayor Frank C. Ortis Dear Readers: Late last year I was honored to participate in a ground breaking ceremony for the Memorial Cancer Institute which will help usher in a new era of comprehensive cancer care in South Florida. While it’s not expected to open until next year, I wanted to share this info with you. The freestanding, 121,000+ sq. ft. facility will consolidate resources and maximize collaboration between high-level specialists at what is already one of only five Cancer Centers of Excellence in Florida. With this centralized location, adjacent to the campus of Memorial Hospital West near the corner of Pines Boulevard and Flamingo Road, Memorial Cancer Institute cements its place as a home for world-class treatment, research, and the highest quality patient and family-centered care to the more than 5,200 new patients that come for life-saving treatment each year.

The new, four-story Memorial Cancer Institute will house radiation oncology, a breast center, hematology-oncology clinic, the Moffitt Malignant Hematology and Cellular Therapy Clinic, and an infusion clinic. It will also feature an image recovery area, conference center, physician offices, private infusion suites, a rooftop garden, and meditation room. We’re very proud to have this facility in our city.

This month the City of Pembroke Pines recognizes Women’s History Month to honor all women – commemorating and encouraging the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s

contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987. In celebration, the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center will be hosting a tea party on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Center, located at 301 NW 103 Ave. The cost is $20 per person (cash only) and reservations are required by March 23, 2022.
