Message from Mayor Wayne M. Messam Greetings Miramarians
A
s we enter the last month of the year, it never ceases to amaze me how fast a year can go by. Although the pandemic is still a reality, we are beginning to see signs of hope as more Americans become vaccinated and our daily lives begin to return to what was normal. Let’s never forget how blessed we are as a nation, a state and as a city. December is perhaps the most festive month of the year. It is the month we celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah and other religious and secular occasions. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate during the Holiday Season, it is a time when we all can spend time with family, take some time off from work and plan for the new year. The best part of it all are the memories we create during these times, so make it as special a holiday as best as you can. In an effort to safely bring the community together, I will bring back "The Longest Table to Miramar." This is a community inspired event being hosted by the Mayor’s office in order to help begin promoting a sense of “place and community” here in Miramar. This socially distanced event is a dinner discussion held outside in what will be the longest dinner table ever assembled in Miramar. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, January 23, 2022 outside. Neighbors, friends, family and co-workers will take part in a tasty dinner discussion under the stars. Residents are encouraged to pull up a seat
ĵ 4
and simply engage with one another in discussion over a meal. Sparking up a conversation with someone whom you’ve probably never met is the greatest way to step into another person’s own personal world. “The Longest Table” is meant for talking over experiences and sharing a laugh or two while enjoying delicious meals in an aesthetically comforting environment. I highly encourage residents to attend and to invite a guest. Conversations take at least two parties and your voice will be the best part. The more diversified we aim to be, the higher the uniqueness we present. Our inaugural Longest Table event was last held in 2020 and it was an amazing success. There is no doubt that our next one will be successful as well. Let’s use this time to have an open forum in the City of Miramar so that everyone can feel welcome as they should be, right here in the city. Did I tell you the food will be as good as the discussions? To be notified of the registration date for this event please email elaroche@miramarfl.gov. As we approach the closing of the year, we greet the new year with hearts open, I urge you all to go forward with not only the standard New Year resolutions but much more. Strive to improve every aspect of your life. Start the changes you’ve been putting off. Explore the community and figure out ways to give even more back. Never forget that anything you will ever need is Right Here … in Miramar! Angela and I wish you and yours a Happy Holiday and Happy New Year!

Message from Commissioner Alexandra P. Davis Hello Miramar! I am grateful to be able to reach you
through this medium once more. We must continue to wear our masks when required, social distance, practice proper hygiene and follow the CDC guidelines. On October 14th I was proud to sponsor a free lunch for the residents of Miramar to celebrate Latin Flavors as we continued to celebrate Latin Heritage Month. I would like to thank Juana’s for their partnership. I partnered with the Miramar Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) on October 23rd for the National Prescription Drugs “Take Back” and Guns for Funds program to take unwanted guns off the streets to keep our community safe. I was pleased to also host the “Love & Laughter” concert in our Cultural Center where the residents enjoyed the R&B sounds of Meli’sa Morgan, E.L.E.M.E.N.T.S and the comedic routine of Marvin Dixon.
given a bag of “Fixins” donated from Farm Share, Inc and on November 20th turkeys. The drive-thru was done in two locations, the Miramar Multi-service Complex on the east side of Miramar and Sunset Lakes Community Center on the west side of Miramar. I was honored to sponsor “An Evening With an Olympian” on Tuesday November 16th at the Cultural Center. The evening was a fundraiser, and introduction to the City, for Ambassador Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce CD and her Pocket Rocket Foundation as well as the start of future collaborations. I am pleased that the event was a success and Miramar open their hearts and pockets for the Foundation! UPCOMING EVENTS: • FIRST FRIDAYS REUNION HOSTED BY COMMISSIONER ALEXANDRA P. I was proud to be able to once again host the annual Black British Heritage Awards and Celebration. This year we added a virtual forum on October 26th in collaboration with the British Consul General Nicolette Brent called “Black British Heritage: Past, Present & Future: highlighting the Windrush Generation and one of our own Miramar residents. I ended October with an awards celebration recognizing the contributions of Black Britons in the US in the areas of education, community engagement and business entrepreneurship with the celebrity appearance and award for entertainment going to Alison Hinds.

Code Compliance Division: Keeping Miramar Beautiful The Miramar Police Department’s Code Compliance Division strives to maintain a desirable living and working environment. The division partners with residents, neighborhood associations, public service agencies and city departments to facilitate voluntary compliance of city ordinances. The following information has been developed to address some of the most frequently asked questions regarding code violations, as well as information on community outreach and assistance available to Miramar residents: LAWN MAINTENANCE • Grass must be mowed regularly and cannot exceed six inches in height. Derelict & Inoperable Motor Vehicles • Wrecked, partially dismantled or otherwise inoperable vehicles may not be stored except in a fully enclosed garage. Inoperable vehicles are subject to towing at owner’s expense and property owners are subject to fines. PARKING OF VEHICLES • Passenger vehicles can be parked in a driveway, carport or garage. Vehicles may not be parked on lawns. RECYCLE PAINT PROGRAM • The exterior of residential properties must be painted and kept free of mildew stains, chipping and peeling paint. • The city of Miramar recycles paint collected through the city’s monthly household hazardous waste collection event. The collected paint is re-blended into high quality exterior latex paint available to all Miramar residents. • Applicants must provide two forms of identification for the address where the paint will be used (e.g., driver’s license and utility bill). • Applicants must complete and return a request form. The form is available online at https://www.miramarfl.gov/1325/FREE-Recycled-Paint or by emailing recycle@ miramarfl.org.

CONTROLLING MOSQUITOES INFESTATION Mosquitoes breed by laying eggs in and near standing water. They can strive, breed, and multiply in as little as one teaspoon or bottle cap of water standing for more than one week. They can live indoors and will bite any time during the day or night. • Any items stored outdoors that can hold standing water should be removed and properly discarded. Around the exterior of buildings, at least once a week, empty, turn over or cover anything that could hold water. • Some of the breeding ground for mosquitoes are: tires, buckets, toys, untreated water in swimming pools, pool covers, birdbaths, trash, trash containers, recycle bins, boat or car covers, roof gutters, coolers, and pet dishes. • Homeowners/tenants are responsible for pool maintenance to prevent mosquitos from breeding there. • Code Compliance partners with Broward County Mosquito Control by providing mosquito repellant to prevent breeding. Code Compliance will treat unsanitary pools if voluntary compliance is not gained. CODE COMPLIANCE DIVISION OUTREACH • The Code Compliance Division provides outreach assistance to Miramar residents who are elderly, and/or may be experiencing health, financial challenges, and lack the ability to address certain code related concerns. The division identifies individuals in need through daily patrol and/or referral and partners with city departments, agencies, community groups, youth groups and others having a desire to assist those in need and enhance the community’s appearance. • Code Compliance can assist with removing debris, cutting the lawn, removing shutters, pruning trees, and painting the exterior of residential homes. • To request assistance or make a referral contact the Code Compliance Division at (954) 602-3174 or email codecompliance@miramarpd.org.

INSIDE MIRAMAR/PEMBROKE PINES - THE MAGAZINE
Message from Mayor Frank C. Ortis Dear Reader: Please take note of recycling and bulk services information for the City of Pembroke Pines. All residential waste and recycling programs remain the same now through January 1, 2022. Residents are asked to please continue to separate garbage and recycling in the appropriate carts as always. Beginning January 2, 2022, changes will occur for singlefamily residents. All residential trash and recycling materials will be collected by Waste Pro in the green trash cart – do no use the blue recycling cart – and sent to the Wheelabrator South Broward Waste-to-Energy facility located on SR7/441 where it will be converted into electricity by incineration. By Florida statute, the incineration of refuse materials to make energy is considered recycling. Even though Waste Pro will not be collecting waste and/or recycling from the blue carts, the City is requesting that you keep your blue recycling carts for the time being – we will provide further information when the changes occur. These changes to the recycling and waste collection program DO NOT affect Condominium Residential Units (such as Century Village, Hollybrook, Park Place, Colony Point, etc.). You can find more information about the recycling transition on the city’s website at www.ppines.com. Regarding Bulk Services: The frequency of curbside bulk pick up will remain the same, which is twice a month.
Residents can view the bulk pick up schedule on the city’s website. Bulk waste is large discarded items that include, but are not limited to, white goods, toilets, pool heaters, bedding, furniture, and yard waste. Currently, residents are permitted to place an unlimited amount of bulk out for removal on monthly scheduled dates. Beginning January 1, 2022, the change that will occur involves the amount of bulk that may be placed curbside. It will be limited to 10 cubic yards. Please go to the city’s website for detailed information. Redistricting is also on topic at the present time. Everyone is welcome to attend a public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at 7pm in City Commission Chambers to share input on redistricting. Analysis was presented at the October 6th Commission Meeting. For more information, please visit the City’s website at www.ppines.com, click Resident Resources on the top of the web page and then click on Redistricting. I have great hopes for a new year in which all of our best expectations are met. May it be a safe and joyous holiday season, with a happy and prosperous New Year! As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-435-6505, or by email at fortis@ppines.com

Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department The holidays are here, which means that it is time for decorations to be hung and for family and friends to get together. But it also means that there is a greater risk for fire. The Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Department would like to share the following safety tips to make sure that you and your family enjoy a happy and firesafe holiday season. As you begin to decorate for the winter holidays we would like to remind you of a few ways to prevent any accidents this holiday season: Inspect holiday lights each year and replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections, don't overload extension cords or wall sockets, and make sure to use the correct equipment such as a ladder when hanging outdoor lights on rooftops. Be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly. More than one of every four home Christmas tree fires is caused by electrical problems. Just as you inspect the lights that hang outside make sure to check for fringed or broken cords, and broken or loose bulbs on a string of lights meant for your Christmas tree. Dried out trees are a fire danger, make sure to water your tree regularly and keep heat sources such as candles, and space heaters at
ĵ 20
least 3 feet away from your Christmas tree. Keep decorations away from windows and doors. In the case of a fire you need to be able to get out quickly and safely having decorations that block your exits can lead to tragedy. The month of December is also the peak time of the year for home candle fires. More than a third of home decoration fires are started by candles. Remember to blow out lit candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Never leave lit candles in an area that is easily accessible to children or an area near curtains or blinds that can catch fire. Lastly if planning to use sparklers during your New Year’s Celebrations be aware that the tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of more than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to cause 3rd degree burns. Always make sure to use precautions and never leave a child unsupervised while using sparklers. For more information on Holiday Safety visit https://www.nfpa.org/ Public-Education/Fire-causes-and-risks/Seasonal-fire-causes/Winterholidays and make sure to follow us on social media to see safety messages and stay up to date on what is happening in our department.

AMEND & REPROOF Located in the Shoppes at Silver Isles 16283 Miramar Pkwy Miramar, FL 33027 (954) 251-3002 www.polonorterestaurant.com For nearly 30 years, Polo Norte Cuban Restaurant has been satisfying the cravings of loyal customers. It all started when a Cuban family emigrated to the United States with hopes of achieving the American dream. Like thousands of Cuban families in the early ’80s, with the help of relatives already living in “El Exilio”, the Busquet family left the island on the Mariel boatlift. They had nothing more than each other, a will to make it and their dreams. After years of hard work and sacrifice, they established the original Polo Norte in 1992 as an ice cream parlor. However, in an incredible twist of fate, Hurricane Andrew hit it only three days after it opened. With untiring determination, the Busquet family picked up the pieces and reopened Polo Norte but this time a little wiser than before. After their recent experience, they knew that selling ice cream alone would not keep the family afloat for long so Raul, his wife Vivian, and their two sons decided to expand the menu and include “Pizza Cubana” along with other Cuban dishes that Vivian was so great at cooking.
AMEND & PROCEED
APPROVED, NO CHANG
Soon after, Polo Norte’s reputation as the place to go for a truly authentic Cuban meal was indisputable, and its popularity in the South Florida community exploded to a level they could have only dreamt of years before. Today, the Busquet family’s true labor of love has flourished into six successful restaurants, still family-owned and operated but most importantly, still run by the same principles, work ethic, and genuine “Cuban” hospitality that started it all. If your tastebuds are in the mood for a truly authentic Cuban experience, Polo Norte is the place for you. For starters try the “Antojito Criollo”, a mouth-watering combination of fried cheese and chorizo over plantain chips. Other fan favorites include the “Bistec Uruguayo”, a deep-fried palomilla steak filled with ham, cheese, chorizo, and bacon. In addition to the savory traditional Cuban dishes, Polo Norte also offers a variety of delicious Cuban-style thick crust pizzas with a selection of over twenty toppings, including guava and cheese. On the menu, you’ll also find sandwiches, salads, and “El Especial del Dia.” And for those with a sweet tooth, desserts like the “Arroz con Leche” are delightful treats or choose from a variety of tropicalflavored ice cream delicacies like the Copa Lolita (two scoops on top of a flan). If that’s not enough, try one of the specialty cocktails at the full bar like the “Piña Coladita,” which features a shot of cafecito. !Buen provecho!
