Protecting our members Senate Bill 309 gains support of Indiana Senate You may have read in previous editions of Electric Consumer about the important issue of service territory preservation. We have been working hard with the Indiana General Assembly STEVE SEIBERT this year to help protect Indiana’s electric cooperatives from losing members, infrastructure and territory to municipal electric utilities after an annexation. We have been encouraging our state senators and state representatives to pass Senate Bill 309, which would end these unfair takings of territory and level the playing field for all of the state’s electric utilities. I am pleased to report that we were successful in getting Senate Bill 309 passed in the Indiana Senate. After lengthy debate in the Senate Utilities Committee, committee members, including Sen. Erin Houchin who represents our Perry County members, passed the bill onto the full Senate for debate. In a broad, bipartisan show of support, the Indiana Senate passed the bill with a 42-7 vote. This sent the bill to the Indiana House of Representatives for the next step in the legislative process before the bill can become law. Many of you had the opportunity to support our efforts by participating in our call to action before the Senate voted

on Senate Bill 309. I want to extend a special thanks to our members that visited action.indianaec.org and joined more than 1,800 co-op advocates around Indiana asking their senators to support this legislation. We also want to thank our state senators who voted for Senate Bill 309. Sen. Houchin and Sen. Mark Messmer, representing our Spencer, Dubois and Warrick County members, both voted in support of this vital issue for Southern Indiana Power and all of Indiana’s electric cooperatives, and they deserve our thanks. At the time of printing, we are still at work on Senate Bill 309 in the Indiana House of Representatives. You may have already had the chance to take action at action.indianaec.org to ask Rep. Lloyd Arnold and Rep. Ron Bacon for their support and we thank you for that. We encourage you to stay engaged on this issue and hopefully we can come together and put an end to the unfair taking of our electric service territory and our members. Visit action.indianaec.org for the latest on Senate Bill 309 and to sign up to receive alerts when you can help us speak out on issues that impact your electric bill. STEVE SEIBERT is the president/CEO of Southern Indiana Power.
