Cheshire Mama Club New Mama Venture Brings Together Local Mums And Small Businesses baby and we wanted to host fun events which would enable women to meet other new mums, build a supportive network, enjoy some much-needed me time and regain their confidence, all while having their little ones entertained,” says Sarah.

Three local women have joined forces to bring together new mums and Cheshire-based businesses at positive and inspiring events across the county. Cheshire Mama Club launched in summer 2021 at The Townhouse in Chester and has since connected hundreds of new mums and numerous local businesses.

Cheshire residents and teachers, Helen Jones, Laura Ward and Sarah Taylor all had their first children in 2019 and felt there was a real need for events where mums could socialise while their little ones were entertained.

“The three of us were looking to create beneficial opportunities for mums and their young children,” explains Helen. “We were all new to motherhood and felt there was a huge gap in the market for events where mums and their babies could chat and truly connect in a nonjudgemental, supportive environment.”

The trio set up Cheshire Mama Club in 2020 with a strong vision to support new mums and their little ones as well as small businesses and local venues.

“We know how difficult it is to meet people (and have a decent conversation) when you’ve just had a

At each event, local businesses are given an opportunity to showcase their products and services, there is multi-sensory entertainment for the babies and toddlers, delicious food and drink for the adults, and no one leaves empty-handed – there’s a goody bag for every mum, stuffed full of treats from local suppliers.

Helen, Laura and Sarah also make sure that there’s a photographer on hand at every event: “As mums we all know how difficult it is to get good photos with our little ones, and invariably we’re the ones manning the camera,” says Laura, “so we always book a family or baby photographer who’s used to working with children, to capture the best bits of the day.

That way our attendees get some lovely photos with their children, and a wonderful memento of the day.”

Since its official launch, Cheshire Mama Club has hosted more than 10 events at different venues across Cheshire including Hartford Hall, Popcorn Chester, Upton Village Hall, The Suburbs and The Yard. Each venue is beautifully dressed by professionals and there’s always at least one entertainer and several small, local businesses represented through the products given away at each event.

Helen comments: “We only ever promote businesses whose products we believe in (eco-friendly where possible) and whose values align with ours. Recent collaborations include Knutsford-based SMOOK, Dollimore Photography, Rockaway Toys, Moo Music, Amy White Sleep Consultant, Pura, Bella & Coco, Cleo Stella Photography and Little Bonbon to name but a few.”

The company also supports local mums in need by giving out free tickets to those who may not otherwise be able to attend. “We’re well aware that not everyone has the means to come along to events like these and are always very happy to help.”

She adds: “Looking back on the last six months, we’re so proud of what we’ve achieved. It’s not been easy for anyone who’s had a baby during the pandemic, but we’re thrilled that we’ve been able to connect so many new mums and introduce them to lots of brilliant local businesses. It’s been wonderful watching new friendships blossom and seeing mums kick back and enjoy themselves without worrying that their little ones are bored or being noisy. We’re looking forward to meeting more new mums throughout 2022 and have some lovely events planned for the next few months.”

The enterprising trio will be hosting a Mother’s Day event in March at the Ring O’ Bells in Christleton and an Easter event in April at The White Horse in Chester.

WORLD WAR II Part One

The first of a series looking back at the events and continuing legacy of the world’s most devastating military conflict to date.

HE instability created in Europe by the First World War (1914-18) set the stage for another international conflict World War II - which broke out two decades later and would prove even more devastating.

Rising to power in an economically and politically unstable Germany, Adolf Hitler, leader of the Nazi Party, rearmed the nation and signed strategic treaties with Italy and Japan to further his ambitions of world domination. Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September 1939 drove Great Britain and France to declare war on Germany, marking the beginning of World War II. Over the next six years, the conflict would take more lives and destroy more land and property around the globe than any previous war. Among the estimated 45-60 million people killed were 6 million Jews murdered in Nazi concentration camps as part of Hitler’s diabolical “Final Solution,” now known as the Holocaust.

Build-up to World War II

The devastation of the Great War (as World War I was known at the time) had greatly destabilised Europe, and

in many respects World War II grew out of issues left unresolved by that earlier conflict. In particular, political and economic instability in Germany, and lingering resentment over the harsh terms imposed by the Versailles Treaty, fueled the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and National Socialist German Workers’ Party, abbreviated as NSDAP in German and the Nazi Party in English..

After becoming Chancellor of Germany in 1933, Hitler swiftly consolidated power, anointing himself Führer (supreme leader) in 1934.

Obsessed with the idea of the superiority of the “pure” German race, which he called “Aryan,” Hitler believed that war was the only way to gain the necessary “Lebensraum,” or living space, for the German race to expand. In the mid-1930s, he secretly began the rearmament of Germany, a violation of the Versailles Treaty.

After signing alliances with Italy and Japan against the Soviet Union, Hitler sent troops to occupy Austria in 1938 and the following year annexed Czechoslovakia.

Hitler’s open aggression went unchecked, as the

United States and Soviet Union were concentrated on internal politics at the time, and neither France nor Britain (the two other nations most devastated by the Great War) were eager for confrontation.

force designed to support the Army, but its planes were superior to nearly all Allied types. Production of German combat aircraft had steadily mounted since 1935.

Great Britain, which was held back by delays in the rearmament programme, was producing one modern fighter in 1939, the Hurricane. A higherperformance fighter, the Spitfire, was just coming into production and did not enter the air war in numbers until 1940.

Lessons learned from WWI

The events of World War I seemed to vindicate the power of the defensive over the offensive, and efensive concepts underlay the construction of the Maginot Line between France and Germany and of its lesser counterpart, the Siegfried Line, in the interwar years.

Yet by 1918 both of the requirements for the supremacy of the offensive were at hand: tanks and planes. The battles of Cambrai (1917) and Amiens (1918) had proved that when tanks were used in masses, with surprise, and on firm and open terrain, it was possible to break through any trench system.

The pact with Stalin meant that Hitler would not face a war on two fronts once he invaded Poland, and would have Soviet assistance in conquering and dividing the nation itself. On September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland from the west; two days later, France and Britain declared war on Germany, beginning World War II. On September 17, Soviet troops invaded Poland from the east. Under attack from both sides, Poland fell quickly, and by early 1940 Germany and the Soviet Union had divided control over the nation, according to a secret protocol appended to the Nonaggression Pact.

Stalin’s forces then moved to occupy the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and defeated a resistant Finland in the Russo-Finnish War. During the six months following the invasion of Poland, the lack of action on the part of Germany and the Allies in the west led to talk in the news media of a “phony war.” At sea, however, the British and German navies faced off in heated battle, and

lethal German U-boat submarines struck at merchant shipping bound for Britain, sinking more than 100 vessels in the first four months of World War II.

Forces and resources of the European combatants in 1939

Against Germany’s 100 infantry divisions and six armoured divisions, France had 90 infantry divisions in metropolitan France, Great Britain had 10 infantry divisions and Poland had 30 infantry divisions, 12 cavalry brigades, and one armoured brigade (Poland had also 30 reserve infantry divisions, but these could not be mobilized quickly). A division contained from 12,000 to 25,000 men.

It was the qualitative superiority of the German infantry divisions and the number of their armoured divisions that made the difference in 1939.

The firepower of a German infantry division far exceeded that of a French, British, or Polish division. and The six armoured, or panzer, divisions of the Wehrmacht comprised some 2,400 tanks.

The German Air Force, or Luftwaffe, was also the best force of its kind in 1939. It was a ground-cooperation

At sea the odds against Germany were much greater in September 1939 than in August 1914, since the Allies in 1939 had many more large surface warships. At sea, however, there was to be no clash between the Allied and the German massed fleets but only the individual operation of German pocket battleships and commerce raiders.

World War II’s key figures:

Adolf Hitler

Born in Austria-Hungary on April 20, 1889, Hitler was decorated during his service in the German Army in World War I. In 1919, he joined the German Workers’ Party, and was appointed leader of the Nazi Party in 1921.

In 1923, while in jail serving a five-year sentence after a failed coup in Munich, he dictated the first volume of his autobiography and political manifesto Mein Kampf (“My Struggle”).

After his early release in 1924, Hitler gained popular support by attacking the Treaty of Versailles and promoting panGermanism, anti-Semitism and anti-communism. He frequently denounced international capitalism and communism as part of a Jewish conspiracy.
