THE 2020 CHASSIS GUIDE If you’re a regular visitor to the Inside BTCC website then you’ll be aware that one of the big projects we’ve been working on in recent seasons has been the chassis archive for cars built to the Next Generation Touring Car regulations.

On the site, you’ll find details on every NGTC chassis that has ever competed in the series, with full information on who drove it each season and a full list of statistics.

In this special eMagazine, which we bring to you free of charge to sit alongside our bumper season review - which you can purchase by following the advert we’ll run down the 27 different chassis that competed in the 2020 season.

It means you’ll be able to see how each car compares in terms of the key statistics - and you might be surprised at some of the data that is thrown up.

Should you wish to check out the full NGTC archive, simply visit the link below…

by West Surrey Racing, B uilt chassis G20-023-01 is the car

G20-023-01 First race: Brands Hatch Indy, 2019

that carried Colin Turkington to the championship title in 2019.

The first of three BMW 330i M Sport models to have been completed, G20-023-01 has just finished its second season of competition having only been used by Turkington thus far.

G20-023-01 will go down in history as the car in which Turkington equalled Andy Rouse’s record of four championship titles and is also the one in which he reached 50 wins, 150 podiums and surpassed 4,000 career points.

The car has the most wins and has led the most laps of any active chassis to compete in 2020. 4

he BTC Racing Honda Civic that was raced by Tom Chilton in 2020 is the newest of the five FK8 chassis to have featured on the grid.

NGTC-18-005 First race: Donington Park, 2020

NGTC-18-005 was built up by Team Dynamics to allow BTC to expand to a three car team and would go on to secure three podium finishes across the course of the season.

The car would also lead its first laps at Brands Hatch during the the season finale after Chilton’s decision to run wet tyres in the second race of the weekend allowed him to briefly vault up to the front of the field.

The 184 points scored is the third highest tally for a customer FK8 so far in the series. 5

The car first competed back in 2012 in the hands of Jeff Smith until a huge accident at Rockingham saw it suffer extensive damage.

The chassis wouldn’t compete again until 2015 when it was raced by Martin Depper, and has competed in every season since - albeit only in the second half of 2017 when it was brought back to replace the car written off by Smith at Croft.

NGTC-12-004 is the car that took Rory Butcher to the 2019 Indy title. 6

MBP-2020-008 is the C hassis second of the two brand new

MBP-2020-008 First race: Donington Park 2020

Ford Focus STs that was built by Motorbase ahead of the 2020 season.

The car is the one that was raced by Rory Butcher on his return to the team, and was the first fourth generation Focus to secure pole position and to win a race.

The 286 points scored in a season is the second highest ever by an NGTC Focus and is only six shy of the record - an impressive fact when you consider that the 2020 season featured three fewer races than normal.

The chassis has already undergone its first major rebuild following Butcher’s accident at Silverstone. 7

The car is one of the original BMW 125i M Sports that debuted in 2013 and was originally driven by Rob Collard for three seasons before reverting to the spare.

Scheduled to return in the final round of 2017 but unraced due to Collard being unwell, the car was purchased by Jelley ahead of 2018 and was the first customer 1 Series to compete in the series.

The car secured a single podium finish during 2020 having taken Jelley to his third career win the previous season. 8

G20-023-03 First race: Brands Hatch Indy, 2019

built by West Surrey Racing and was raced in 2020 by Tom Oliphant.

The car is the same one that Oliphant used in his first season with the team, and secured a first win this year at Brands Hatch, having taken a best finish of second in 2019.

Of the three 330i M Sports to have been raced so far in the series, G20-023-03 is the only one yet to secure a pole position - although it is now the second highest scoring 3 Series chassis.

The car helped WSR and BMW to secure two manufacturers’ titles in two seasons, as well as helping Team BMW to win the teams’ title in 2020.

WPMS-NGTC-068 First race: Donington Park, 2020

that were built by BMR Engineering and Laser Tools Racing for the 2020 season.

Driven by Aiden Moat, the car was visually similar to the older-spec Infiniti that the Scot raced the previous season but was a totally dierent machine under the skin.

Although unable to make it onto the podium during the 2020 season, chassis WPMS-NGTC-068 ended the year having scored more points than the older cars combined - thanks in part to nine top ten finishes across the course of the campaign.

HYUNDAI i30 N FASTBACK

by EXCELR8 for just its B uilt second season in the series,

WPMS-NGTC-070 First race: Donington Park, 2020

WPMS-NGTC-070 is the first of the two new Hyundais that debuted in 2020.

Driven by Senna Proctor, the car endured a diďŹƒcult debut weekend at Donington Park where engine related trouble meant he failed to start all three races.

From there however, WPMSNGTC-070 would go on to become a regular contender for points finishes and proved to be the better performing of the two i30 N Fastbacks over the year as a whole.

It would end up scoring more championship points despite appearing in one race fewer.

WPMS-NGTC-025 First race: Brands Hatch Indy, 2017

First raced in 2017 when the AmD Tuning team introduced a second car for Ant Whorton-Eales, the chassis is the same one that took Jake Hill to victory last year at Knockhill - scoring the only win for the S3 in the process.

Despite starting 65 fewer races than the sister car, the chassis has scored more points during its time in the series.

The 44 collected by Thompson was the third highest score of any driver to have raced the S3 during its time on the grid. 12

Although six drivers were due to compete in the car, only five were able to actually race after Jac Constable was taken ill at Croft.

It meant the car equalled the record for most drivers to have raced an NGTC car in a single campaign, rather than taking it outright.

PMR-02 is the car that was previously raced by Senna Proctor and Rob Collard, and secured the maiden victory for Power Maxed Racing when Proctor crossed the line first in the dramatic wet/dry race at Brands Hatch in 2018. 13

WPMS-NGTC-071 First race: Donington Park, 2020

and the first of the two Hyundais built by the EXCELR8 Motorsport team.

The car scored a podium finish on its first weekend in the series at Donington Park, which was also the first top three finish for the secondyear team.

In the same race, the car also became the first Hyundai to lead a lap in the BTCC, with Smiley having started from the reverse grid pole.

Those three laps mean WPMSNGTC-71 was one of only three cars to lead a lap during the 2020 season without actually winning a race.

in 2012 as replacement for the sister car when it crashed at Rockingham.

First race: Silverstone, 2012

Part of the grid every season since, bar 2015, NGTC-12-006 is one of only three chassis to have started more than 200 races and is the ninth highest scoring NGTC car.

It is also the chassis with most pole positions amongst the 27 cars to have competed in 2020.

Hill is the fourth driver to have taken a podium in the car after Jeff Smith, Jack Goff and Sam Tordoff, with Goff and Tordoff sharing the four wins.

Martin Depper and Mike Bushell were the other two drivers. 15

NGTC-18-001 is the first Honda Civic Type R FK8 to have been built by Team Dynamics.

Although the car would be winless for a second successive season, NGTC-18-001 enabled Neal to continue his record of scoring at least one podium finish and leading a lap in every season since 2002.

It was also the car in which Neal reached the landmark of 700 races in the series at Oulton Park.

Chassis NGTC-18-001 has also been driven by both of Neal’s sons Henry and Will - the former in the summer Snetterton test and the later in the Touring Car Trophy finale last season. 16

Cammish has gone on to be a title contender for the last two years and has scored the most points of any driver in an FK8.

RML 131 001/13 First race: Brands Hatch Indy, 2013

The car holds the record for being the NGTC machine driven by the most drivers, having raced every season since bar 2017.

RML 131 001/13 is the only one of the four VWs not to win a race, and has the unwanted record of being one of the few cars to record a minus score with Mark Howard in 2016.

Had it not been for the fact that Hamilton had to miss five races in 2020, the car would have been only the fourth NGTC model to start 200 races. 20

RML 131 002/13 was the first CC to win in the series thanks to Aron Smith at Oulton Park in 2014 but departs the series as the lowest scoring of the four cars built - having failed to break 100 points in any of the seven seasons that it was active.

GPRM NGTC 017 First race: Brands Hatch Indy, 2014

NGTC 017 is the original Mercedes Benz A Class that was introduced by Ciceley Motorsport back in 2014.

Adam Morgan’s race car for three seasons and the first Mercedes to win a race in the series, GPRM NGTC 017 became the spare car for 2017 before being reintroduced when the team expanded to two cars for 2018.

Although the chassis has the record for most points scored by a Mercedes back in 2015 - when Morgan picked up 267 - the car ended up being overhauled by the sister Ciceley-run chassis during the 2020 campaign, having managed to score just 70 points during the last three seasons of competition. 22

Despite starting fewer races than the other two Mercedes Benz A Class chassis that have been built by Ciceley Motorsport, GPRM NGTC 019 is the highest scoring of the three cars, with Morgan’s solid performances in 2020 moving it ahead of the sister car opposite.

Although it was only a winner in two of the four seasons it raced, and has led fewer laps than the other two cars, GPRM NGTC 019 has picked up a total of 17 podium finishes which is the most for a Mercedes in the series. 23

131 003/14 is one of the two Volkswagen CCs that were introduced by Team BMR mid-way through the 2014 season.

The car was the most successful Volkswagen over the course of a single season, taking six wins and ten podium finishes with Jason Plato in 2015 and scoring 344 points.

Having been a spare car in 2016, the car enjoyed only limited success when brought back out by Team HARD in 2017 and would only add another 63 points to its tally in four seasons.

Neate had been set to start the season in one of the older Focus RS models - MBP-006-2017, as raced last year by Ollie Jackson - whilst the build of his car was completed.

However, delays to the season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic ensured the car was ready to contest the entire season.

The three points scored by Neate is the second lowest tally by an NGTCspec Focus being run by Motorbase behind Nicolas Hamilton, who was unable to score in 2019. 26

The car was the first in series history to be specially adapted for a disabled driver when Nicolas Hamilton got behind the wheel in 2015 after the car was acquired by AmD Tuning and it would go on to be raced by Jake Hill, Ollie Jackson and Mark Blundell.

Jackson scored the only podium finish for the car in the chaotic wet/dry race at Brands Hatch Indy in 2018.

However, a total of 141 points from 180 starts is only ten more than Hill scored in the sister Audi during the 2019 season alone. 31

NGTC-18-004 First race: Brands Hatch Indy, 2019

The car allowed Crees to match his personal best finish in the series and also set a new best for points scored with 50.

NGTC-18-004 was driven by Chris Smiley in 2019 and picked up three podium finishes although it is still the lowest scoring of the five FK8 cars that are currently racing in the series.

The 182 points scored is two less than NGTC-18-005 managed in its debut season with Tom Chilton. 32
