Born from a gold rush in 1902, Fairbanks remains a frontier town in the middle of a vast wilderness. The Fairbanks North Star Borough, which includes the cities of Fairbanks and North Pole and neighboring communities such as Ester, Fox and Salcha, has a population that hovers around 95,000 residents. The people that call this spirited place home are tough as nails and independent yet creative and kindhearted—one of many reasons why Fairbanks is known as the “Golden Heart of Alaska.” Artsy shops and venues along with innovative attractions, activities and events celebrate the midnight sun, aurora borealis and life in the Far North, embracing the area’s Alaska Native heritage, historic roots and its sense of place. Downtown Fairbanks is a delightful blend of old and new. Gold rush era buildings mingle with a contemporary arts scene, an array of delicious eating and drinking establishments, museums, shops, the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center and iconic Golden Heart Plaza. Public art is found all around with colorful murals on buildings and whimsically painted steam-heat vent pipes. Sculptures enliven green spaces and cheerful holiday-themed lights decorate lampposts in winter, beautifying downtown streets and businesses. The Chena River runs right through the heart of town and locals embrace the waterway as a venue for summer activities like floating, boating and fishing, as well as winter activities such as dog sledding, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Stroll the two-mile river walk beside the Chena River from the antler arch at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center to beloved Pioneer Park and enjoy the interesting sites, sculptures and flowers along the way. 2

through the YEARS

Since Italian immigrant Felix Pedro found gold in the foothills nearby, sparking Captain E.T. Barnette to establish a trading post on the banks of the Chena River over one hundred years ago, gold mining has remained an important factor in the Fairbanks economy. Fairbanks holds tight to its colorful gold rush roots with attractions and fun-filled events that celebrate the historic quest for gold. See the largest public display of gold in the state at the university’s museum or tour a gold dredge. Try your hand at gold panning or visit a local jeweler to find a gold nugget souvenir to take home. Over the past century, the area has grown and thrived in other industries as well. The Alaska Highway linked the state to the rest of the world and the city became a pivotal point for major projects throughout its history. As the northernmost post, Fairbanks played an integral role for the United States during World War II, enabling the US to assist its European allies. Our strategic geographic location is just as important today, with Fort Wainwright situated adjacent to the city and Eielson Air Force Base located just past North Pole to the south. Fairbanks was also a crucial staging area for construction of the 800-mile trans-Alaska pipeline that carries crude oil from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez. Visitors can view and learn about the pipeline 10 miles north of Fairbanks near Fox. The flagship campus of the state’s university system, the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) sits on a hillside overlooking the city and the Tanana Valley. Known as “America’s Arctic University,” UAF offers a variety of tours and attractions for visitors to enjoy, including the University of Alaska Museum of the North.

An easy 20-minute drive from Fairbanks will lead you to North Pole, Alaska, “where the spirit of Christmas lives yearround.” A visit to this cheery little town will leave you feeling the holiday spirit no matter the time of year. Drive along Santa Claus Lane and admire streetlights decorated as candy canes, holiday twinkle light displays and buildings painted with Christmas colors and festive motifs. Visit the Santa Claus House to browse holiday-inspired gifts and take your picture with the jolly old elf himself. Meet Comet, Cupid and the other reindeer and have a letter from Santa sent to friends and family back home with an authentic North Pole postmark. 4

Morris Thompson CULTURAL and VISITORS CENTER Serving as the regional visitor facility, the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center should be your first stop in Fairbanks. Both beautiful and informative, the center has brochures, maps and friendly and knowledgeable Explore Fairbanks staff with answers to all your questions. Free to roam, the center also features 9,000 square feet of exhibits, offering a glimpse into life in the Far North with displays and dioramas about Interior Alaska’s people, wildlife, landscapes and seasons. Denakkanaaga and Tanana Chiefs Conference Cultural Programs share Alaska Native culture with visitors. The Alaska Public Lands Information Center offers an outdoor excursion trip planning area as well as an Alaska Geographic gift store.

With nearly endless daylight, Fairbanks’ summers are filled with energy and brimming with action. During Midnight Sun Season—April 22 to August 20—sunsets seamlessly merge into sunrises because the sun never goes down far enough for the sky to get truly dark. In fact, from mid-May through late July, Fairbanks experiences continuous daylight for 70 straight days. This constant sunlight transforms life in pleasing and wondrous ways with the rousing midnight sun calling people to the verdant outdoors. Middle-of-the-night activities include golfing, biking and hiking. Go for a midnight stroll, float the Chena River or indulge in a late-night dessert on an outdoor deck. At the peak of solstice, three events celebrate this Far North phenomenon—a 12-hour street fair takes place in downtown Fairbanks, the Alaska Goldpanners start their historic solstice baseball game at 10pm without turning on the lights, and a festive 10k run winds its way through Fairbanks’ neighborhoods creating a partylike atmosphere. With the midnight sun simply refusing to set, this top-of-the-world town enjoys one of the best summers the planet has to offer. 6

Fairbanks is among the world’s best places for viewing the northern lights during Aurora Season—August 21 to April 21. The city’s location is ideal, directly under the Auroral Oval, a ring-shaped band that hovers in the atmosphere above the Arctic Circle where aurora activity is concentrated and consistent despite the 11-year solar cycle. In addition, low precipitation in the region means clear nights are more common and low population density leads to darker skies with less light pollution. Nearby vantage points are perfect for scanning the sky and waiting for the northern lights to appear or you can book a tour for professional guidance. Spend a night in a heated “aurorium” cabin, yurt or lodge to view the northern lights in warmth and comfort. You can also look for them on an overnight dog sled adventure, snowmobile ride, snow cat tour or a flight above the Arctic Circle. Ask your lodging’s front desk if they offer a wakeup call when the northern lights are out. Stay for at least three nights and be out actively looking during the late-night hours and your chances of seeing the aurora are more than 90%. Intensity varies from night to night and the best displays usually appear during the late evening to early morning hours. No guarantees, but the longer you’re here, the better your chances of seeing a great show.

Like a trip inside a snow globe, Winter Season in Fairbanks does not disappoint. Our sub-Arctic location makes it one of best places on Earth to be captivated by the aurora borealis, experience the exhilarating sport of dog mushing and see amazing outdoor ice sculptures. Fairbanks’ northern region is rich with Alaska Native heritage. Many different Indigenous groups in Alaska first called the Last Frontier their home thousands of years prior to the miners and merchants of the gold rush. Each has their own way of life, including language, material culture and traditions. Adventurous travelers can visit remote villages and be inspired by the resourceful and contemporary lifestyle of Interior and Arctic peoples. Athabascan people are predominant in Alaska’s vast Interior. Once nomadic, they now live in small villages and are known for their decorative beadwork, birch bark baskets and skin-sewed garments. Inuit of the Far North are often coastal and create elegant carvings of the natural world around them from ivory, bone and driftwood. Alaska Native peoples create works of art out of strikingly different materials like caribou antler, moose hide, whale baleen and walrus ivory. Authentic Alaska Native made gifts and artwork can be found in many galleries and specialty stores. Traditional Alaska Native athletic games and performing arts like drumming, dancing and fiddle playing can be seen during special events around town, offering an authentic view into the past as well as a bridge to the future.

ALASKA’S BASECAMP for adventure Thanks to its central location within the state, Fairbanks has served as a hub for access to Alaska’s Interior and Arctic since its very beginning. Whether on your own or on a tour, any route you take out of the city will very quickly lead you to jaw-dropping scenery dotted with serene lakes, crisscrossed by mighty rivers and shadowed by majestic mountains. Wilderness abounds and adventures begin. To get you off the road and into the wild, guided ecotours, fishing and boat charters, and wildlife tours can be arranged through professional outfitters. Float a mighty river, fly fish a remote stream, take a flight to see glorious mountain and glacier views or simply be still in a truly wild place and take in nature’s extraordinary gifts. Roadhouses, lodges, campgrounds and friendly communities along the way welcome visitors and encourage exploration.

INTERIOR ALASKA wide open spaces

Alaska’s Interior spans 175,000 square miles between the Alaska Range to the south and the Brooks Range to the north, covering about 30% of the state. For a little perspective, this region is as large as the states of Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio combined. Bordering on the Arctic, the White Mountains National Recreation Area north of Fairbanks is easily accessible via the Steese and Elliott highways and offers opportunities for gold panning, cross country skiing, hiking, fishing and camping. Explore the area stretching south from Fairbanks along the Richardson Highway through Salcha and Delta Junction to the Copper River Valley. The Gulkana, Delta, Tanana and Copper rivers offer scenic recreation with fishing, rafting and boat tours. The towns of Glennallen, Copper Center, Gulkana and Gakona are rich with gold rush history and Alaska Native culture and serve as popular starting points for backcountry expeditions. At the edge of the Interior, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve encompasses 13.2 million acres of stunning scenery, making it the largest national park in America with four mountain ranges and nine of North America’s sixteen highest peaks. From Paxson, head west along the Denali Highway through 135 miles (217 km) of Interior Alaska to Cantwell. Only accessible mid-May through September, this road is mostly gravel with gorgeous views of the Alaska Range but few services along the way. Return to Fairbanks via the Parks Highway, visiting Denali, Healy and Nenana on the way. 15

DENALI more than just a mountain

One of Alaska’s most popular destinations, Denali National Park and Preserve is wild and breathtakingly beautiful, covering six million acres of pure wilderness and home to North America’s highest peak. Meaning “the Great One” or “High One” in the Alaska Native Athabascan language, Denali rises 20,310 feet (6,190 meters) into the sky. Although summer months are most popular, the park is enchanting any time of year and is an easy two-hour drive south on the Parks Highway or a four-hour train trip from Fairbanks. In summer, traverse the Denali Park Road in your own vehicle to mile 15 or venture deeper into the park on a tour bus. Flightseeing is another exciting way to view the Alaska Range and get up close to “the Great One.” The park’s varied terrain includes brilliant mountains, pristine rivers and lakes, colorful tundra, alpine meadows, sweeping vistas and abundant wildlife. Along the way you may spot moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, wolves or any of the hundreds of other species that call the park home. Dining, shopping, tours, lodging and other visitor services are available near the park entrance. Activities within the park are as varied as the travelers who visit and whether you choose to simply take in the pristine wilderness or explore the rugged backcountry, there are plenty of options to help you discover Denali.

After an adventure to the Far North, return to the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center to pick up an official Arctic Circle Certificate. A journey to the Arctic will surely be remembered forever.

Experience the vast wilderness panoramas, tundraladen landscape and fascinating Indigenous cultures that define Alaska’s Arctic. Cross the Arctic Circle at latitude 66° 33’ north, where the sun does not set for one day during summer solstice, June 21, nor does it rise for one day during winter solstice, December 21. This place that many only ever dream about visiting is just 140 (225 km) air miles or 195 (314 km) road miles north of Fairbanks, a four- to five-hour drive. Tour by van or motorcoach up the Dalton Highway, also known as the Haul Road, or by plane to see the Arctic Circle and the mighty Yukon River. Visit Coldfoot, 18

Explore the Brooks Range and Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, sometimes called Alaska’s ultimate wilderness and covering 8.4 million acres, or Kobuk Valley National Park, renowned for half a million caribou and sand dunes created from ancient glaciers in northwestern Alaska. 19

Surrounded by wild and scenic woodlands, Fairbanks is boundless when it comes to outdoor fun. Public lands are easily accessible and offer unlimited options for hiking, skiing, birding, boating and more. Interior Alaska’s bountiful freshwater rivers, streams and lakes provide ample opportunities for fishing enthusiasts, both summer and winter. You might hook Arctic char or grayling, rainbow trout, king or silver salmon, perhaps even northern pike or burbot. If you crave sleeping under the stars or just a place to park your RV, private and public campgrounds can accommodate your needs.

Explore these nearby areas on your own or connect with a guide to show you the ropes. The Chena River that flows through town is easily accessible at several points and is great for fishing, boating, floating and more. Take a cruise on an authentic sternwheeler or rent a canoe, kayak or paddleboard. The many parks and campgrounds along the river are perfect for picnics. Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, a former dairy farm, is just a few minutes from downtown and is a great place for a leisurely stroll through fields and boreal forest while learning about the birds and other flora and fauna of Interior Alaska. It’s also an ideal setting to watch the northern lights during Aurora Season. Birch Hill Recreation Area in the nearby hills is a premier destination for cross country skiing, with groomed trails and warm-up areas in winter. In summer, the area is great for hiking, biking and disc golf. Tanana Lakes Recreation Area in south Fairbanks is a fun place for a swim and has a sandy area for a day at the “beach.” The lake is stocked for fishing and boat rentals are available. In winter, part of the lake is cleared for ice skating. Chena River State Recreation Area begins at mile 27 (43.5 km) of Chena Hot Springs Road and continues to the end with popular areas for hiking, snowmobiling, camping, fishing and aurora viewing. Granite Tors and Angel Rocks are more challenging hiking trails in the area. Tent and RV campgrounds as well as roadaccessible public use cabins are available. Chena Lake Recreation Area near the City of North Pole is another scenic option for a beach day and swimming as well as renting a boat and wetting your line. When frozen, the lake is ideal for ice fishing, snowmobiling and aurora viewing. Harding Lake, Birch Lake and Quartz Lake are state recreation areas within easy reach along the Richardson Highway south of Fairbanks. All offer camping, fishing, boating and great chances to spot wildlife and the northern lights.

WILDLIFE

Alaska’s Interior and Arctic, including the Fairbanks area and Denali, are well known for large, unspoiled landscapes that serve as great habitat for animals. Each highway branching out from Fairbanks crosses large tracts of boreal forest, subalpine or Arctic tundra. Along the way, you may see moose, bear, fox or caribou. Also keep your eyes open for beaver, ermine, red squirrels and other small animals. Be sure to take your binoculars for close-up views from a safe distance. Moose are a common part of life for most Alaskans. These massive, hulking creatures wander through sports fields, poke around neighborhoods and nonchalantly cross roads and highways. Moose are generally happy to pose for a picture or two but leave them plenty of room, especially when calves are nearby. Bears may be spotted fishing along streams with spawning salmon in the summer. In late summer and 22

fall, they are often found feeding on berries in open meadows or on the tundra. Black bear populations are plentiful in Alaska’s Interior, but sightings of this shy animal are rare outside of national parks and state recreation areas. Bring along potent bear spray if you’re hiking outside of urban areas, just in case. Fox are another commonality in the Fairbanks area and can sometimes be seen darting across the road in woody, brushy areas. If you’re lucky, you may see one with the “cross” coloration—a dark band crossing the shoulders and back. Look for the Arctic fox north of the Brooks Range. White in winter and gray or brown in summer, its ears and body are smaller compared to the red fox. Caribou travel in large herds during spring and fall migrations but are often seen in small bands or as individuals during the summer. In Fairbanks, some visitor attractions include experiences with caribou’s domesticated cousin—reindeer—and are a popular

way to learn about these fascinating animals and snap an up-close photo or selfie. Birds abound in the Interior and Fairbanks is a thoroughfare for hundreds of species. A walk through local fields and forest trails will reveal sandhill cranes, Canada geese, snow buntings, Townsend’s warblers and more. Spot alpine species such as the northern wheatear, surfbirds and willow or rock ptarmigan. Mighty birds of prey like osprey, northern goshawk, eagles and boreal and northern hawk owls keep a close eye on everything. Muskox have roamed the Earth for over 600,000 years, once mingling on the Arctic tundra with woolly mammoths and sabertooth tigers. These odd-looking, rotund creatures are rare to see in the wild but easy to spot at the Large Animal Research Station at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. You can even take a tour to learn more about these fascinating Ice Age relics. 23

FLAIR & FLAVOR cuisine, spirits, markets & more

Breweries, distilleries, corner coffee huts, specialty food trucks and loads of dine-in, drivethru and take-out eateries and restaurants assure no one goes hungry in Fairbanks. When available, restaurants often utilize local produce, meat and seafood in their recipes. Savor Alaskan comfort foods like grilled salmon, king crab and reindeer sausage alongside locally grown Yukon gold potatoes and sweet garden-fresh baby carrots. Fairbanks’ eclectic palate has also given rise to cosmopolitan cafés including sushi, Vietnamese, Indian, vegan, award winning BBQ and Thai food, just to name a few. With beers named after quintessential Alaskan items like ptarmigan, the northern lights and brown bears, the brewery scene in Fairbanks is hopping. The small-batch, small town focused HooDoo Brewing Company, named after the Alaskan Mountains bearing the same name, takes the phrase “the ART of brewing” totally seriously. Latitude 65 Brewing Company converted an old athletic club into an inviting space serving up delicious beers and tasty ciders. Housed in an attractive, renovated historic roadhouse, Silver Gulch Brewing & Bottling Company is home to original, great tasting brews. In Fairbanks, you’ll also find Humble Roots Beer Project and Black Spruce Brewing Company. While traveling the highways to and from Fairbanks, check out 49th State Brewery in Healy along the Parks or Big Delta Brewing Company along the Richardson. You can also sample creations from many of these local breweries at restaurants, bars and tap houses in the area. Summon the spirits with a visit to one (or more) of four amazing distilleries in the Fairbanks area. Ursa Major, whose name means “great bear,” uses barley from Delta Junction to craft exceptionally smooth spirits including Fairbanks Sourdough Rum (Alaska’s first rum), Summer Harvest Gin and their flagship Long Winter Vodka. Historic Fairbanks City Hall has never 24

looked so good with Fairbanks Distilling Company setting up shop to serve delicious high-latitude, ultra-premium spirits made from Alaskan-sourced grains, berries, potatoes and more. Hoarfrost Distilling features hand crafted alcohol infused with local berries and produce and offers its flagship Crystal Vodka by the bottle. Arctic Harvest truly embraces the phrase “farm to table” as they grow all the grains used to make their high-end spirits on a beautiful family farm. Fairbanks is also home to four coffee roasters including the artsy and welcoming McCafferty’s, award-winning Alaska Coffee Roasting Co., North Pole Coffee Roasting Company and Lifeline Coffee Roasters. Enjoy a cup at their flagship cafes or served at local drivethru coffee huts. Summer’s everlasting sunshine creates amazing growth and northern farmers attest that produce tastes better because of the climate—cool nights make the vegetables sweeter and more delicious than those grown in warmer climates. Find tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce and more at seasonal farmers markets and brighten your day with a beautiful locally grown bouquet. Homegrown small businesses turn Alaska produce into for-sale items such as Alaskan jam, honey, seasonings, mustards, vinegars, baked goods and sweet treats. Find them at local shops around town, seasonal markets and holiday bazaars. Artwork, jewelry and other gifts adorn the market stalls and you’re sure to find the perfect keepsake to remind you of your visit to the Last Frontier. GETTING AROUND

Even with its far away and remote location, Fairbanks is the farthest north city in Alaska and the United States accessible by air, rail, road and, in some cases, ocean! Visitors come from around the world to bask in the midnight sun, chase the aurora and experience the thrill of winter in Fairbanks. Fairbanks International Airport is close to downtown Fairbanks and provides great service and support for travelers. Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines offer daily, year-round direct flights to and from Seattle. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines typically offer direct service to and from other Lower 48 cities during the summer season. There are a variety of connecting flights that make getting to Fairbanks easy from anywhere in the United States at any time of the year. Within the state, Alaska Airlines provides daily, year-round direct service to and from Anchorage while regional air carriers, including Wright Air Service and Warbelow’s Air, serve Fairbanks and numerous Interior Alaska rural communities. All aboard! The Alaska Railroad provides year-round service to Fairbanks. The daily summer train between Fairbanks and Anchorage is a magnificent 12-hour journey that stops in Talkeetna and Denali National Park. In winter, the train offers service between Anchorage and Fairbanks, allowing passengers to experience Alaska in winter from the comfort of a warm railcar. Moving around town is easy with rental cars and motorhomes, shuttles, taxis and rideshare services available in addition to the Fairbanks MACS Transit Bus System. Statewide shuttle companies provide daily transportation to many locations. Some vendors offer rental cars and campers suitable for travel on gravel roads like the Dalton and Denali highways.

Take an ALASKAN CRUISE to Fairbanks

Despite being almost 500 miles away from oceanside ports in Southcentral Alaska, Fairbanks is a popular destination for summer visitors taking a cruise to the state. Many cruise lines coming to Alaska offer one-way Gulf of Alaska trips that include the port of Vancouver in Canada and either Whittier or Seward as the port in Alaska. These cruises typically offer land tour packages that incorporate Fairbanks and Denali National Park into their itinerary. In the packages, Fairbanks is generally the first or last place people visit, making it easy for visitors to add on extra days to experience more of Alaska’s Interior and Arctic with Fairbanks as their basecamp. Other cruise visitors will take a one-way cruise across the Gulf of Alaska and then explore Fairbanks and other communities on the road or rail system on their own. The Gulf of Alaska cruise season runs from May to September, with each month offering a different experience for visitors who come to Fairbanks. May to early June will generally see smaller crowds and better value as well as giving people a chance to experience 24 hours of daylight, which extends almost to the end of July. Mid-June to early August are the peak summer months when Fairbanks offers the warmest weather in the state and around-the-clock activities and events. From mid-August through September, visitors have a chance of seeing the northern lights in one of the best destinations in the world to see them. There are numerous ways cruise ship passengers to Alaska can enjoy the state’s “farthest north port” of Fairbanks. Contact your travel agent or cruise company for more details.

Pack a sense of adventure along with casual, comfortable clothing and shoes for your trip to Fairbanks. Dressing in layers is recommended regardless of the season as temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day. Although summer wear includes shorts, short-sleeved shirts and sandals, also plan to pack pants, long-sleeved shirts and a light jacket. INTERIOR ALASKA

HIGHWAYS

Alaska offers some of America’s most amazing motoring adventures over a wide variety of terrain. Roads range from two-lane highways to narrow dirt roads. Many Interior Alaska roads have uneven surfaces due to the thawing of the frozen ground below the road surface. Road work happens in the summer, so expect occasional delays. • The Alaska Highway (#2) is a fully paved highway with services about 50 miles apart and serves as Alaska’s main road artery through Canada to the Lower 48. The Alaska Highway officially ends in Delta Junction but the road continues to Fairbanks as the Richardson Highway. • The Elliott Highway (#2) extends north from Fox to Livengood, then west to Manley Hot Springs. • The Parks Highway (#3) links Fairbanks and Anchorage, a 360-mile drive that passes by Denali National Park. • The Richardson Highway (#2 & #4) connects Fairbanks and Delta Junction (#2) then continues on to Valdez (#4). It is a scenic route with beautiful views of the Alaska Range.

• The Steese Highway (#6) heads north from Fairbanks towards the White Mountains and the village of Circle, only the first half of the road is paved. • The Denali Highway (#8) spans 135 miles (217 km) of Interior Alaska, from Paxson on the Richardson Highway to Cantwell on the Parks Highway and offers outstanding views of the Alaska Range. Open mid-May through September, the road is mostly gravel with few services along the route. If using a rental car, make sure that your contract allows travel on the Denali Highway. • The Dalton Highway (#11), also known as “the Haul Road,” continues north where the Elliott Highway turns off at Livengood. Following the route of the transAlaska oil pipeline to Prudhoe Bay, the road is open to the public for 496 miles (798 km) north of Fairbanks although services are very sparse. If using a rental car, make sure that your contract allows travel on the Dalton Highway. • The Alaska Marine Highway System is not technically a road but is another option if you are driving your own vehicle to Alaska. The system covers 3,500 miles of coastline, serving over 30 communities with regional hubs in Ketchikan, Juneau, Whittier and Homer. 65
