Fairbanks is a vibrant river city with a rich Alaska Native culture. Bisected by the Chena River and surrounded by mountain ranges and pristine lakes, Fairbanks is the gateway to an abundance of natural wonders including the ones overhead—the midnight sun and the northern lights. Thom Meintel, travel writer

Welcome to Fairbanks, Alaska! Deep in the wilds of Alaska, tucked in between two immense mountain ranges, nestled up against a winding river, you will find a gem of a little city known as Fairbanks. The magical northern lights dance across the sky nine months of the year during Aurora Season and the sun shines up to 24 hours a day during the Midnight Sun Season. Winter Season takes on a storybook like quality, the Chena River freezes over, snow blankets the ground and lighted snowflakes adorn lamp posts. Bold and resourceful locals have created a spirited city in the Golden Heart of Alaska. Where else can you travel to such a remote setting and still enjoy all the amenities of a delightful downtown, a thriving arts community, dynamic Alaska Native culture, outstanding Alaskan activities and attractions and endless opportunities for exploration? Bursting with energy and things to do, visitors find Fairbanks inviting, engaging and awe-inspiring—the heart of the last frontier. Get lucky panning for gold, float the Chena River, mingle with reindeer and musk oxen, cool off in an ice museum, take a refreshing hike and look for birds and wildlife. Be inspired by art galleries, museums, open-air markets and historic sites. With Fairbanks as a basecamp you can journey to Denali National Park, cross the Arctic Circle and discover spectacular Interior Alaska landscapes, towns and destinations. Whether you want to scan the skies for the aurora borealis, bask in the everlasting sunshine or take a trip inside a snow globe— Fairbanks is an extraordinary destination.

Traveling in the time of COVID-19 In a time when it feels as though uncertainty and change seem to dominate our days, we can all rest assured the sun will keep rising, the snow will keep falling and the aurora borealis will keep weaving its way across the sky. As people are traveling again, let’s do so in a thoughtful, responsible and respectful manner. A big part of that involves preparation. Please familiarize yourself with and adhere to state mandates so that we can all stay safe together. Fairbanks and its businesses are doing their part to keep travelers, employees and the local community safe. There are many outdoor and/ or spacious venues, activities, attractions, tours and eating and drinking establishments that have thoughtfully re-opened. Visit Explore Fairbanks’ website for a current “Open for Business” list, including steps being taken to help travelers have a safe experience. Keep track of the State of Alaska’s travel requirements on the government site, sanitize your hands, practice social distancing and don a mask. With careful planning and testing, responsible travelers can embark on a journey to the land of the aurora borealis, midnight sun and winter adventures. Or sit tight and savor a virtual view of what Fairbanks has to offer via Explore Fairbanks’ online videos and 360-degree content and imagine yourself here until traveling becomes more amenable again.

Heralding the lowest population density in the United States of America, here a modicum of social distancing has long been a way of life. In Alaska’s Interior and far north, the buffer between you and the next person was substantial prior to COVID-19, so adding a foot or two to get to six feet apart has been quite manageable. Many of the activities and adventures Fairbanks offers are malleable in regard to COVID-19. It is reasonably easy to social distance while chasing the northern lights, basking in the midnight sun, floating the Chena River, golfing at midnight, hitting the nature trails or dog mushing in the moonlight.

Alaska Native Heritage Dynamic indigenous peoples. Alaska Native peoples have lived in Alaska for more than 14,000 years. The Interior and Arctic regions are primarily home to Athabascan Indians and Inupiaq and Yupik Eskimo. Once nomadic, most Athabascans now live in urban centers or in small villages throughout Alaska’s vast Interior. Alaska Native artisans create works of art out of strikingly different materials. Athabascans work with caribou antler, birch bark, moose hide, porcupine quills, trade beads and more to make baskets and exquisite beadwork. Farther north in the Arctic, you will find Inupiaq and Yupik Eskimo. These resilient people are often coastal and create elegant carvings of the natural world around them out of walrus ivory, bone, caribou antler, whale baleen and driftwood. Alaska Native artists demonstrate, exhibit and sell their work in museums, galleries and specialty shops presenting an authentic view into the past as well as a bridge to the future.

The indigenous peoples of Interior Alaska have inhabited this region for thousands of years with grace, fortitude and respect for this challenging land. The chance to view their vivid art and experience their dance, song and chant offers visitors a window into a colorful culture—and into their care and reverence for their Native lands. The limitless light that bathes Fairbanks in midsummer is both energizing and comforting. You can play golf or ride your bike at midnight, or you can just relax in the sunflower glow that spreads across the entire sky into the ivory birch woodlands. Life seems to expand endlessly—and Alaska Interior visitors can enjoy this magic as easily as residents do. Eric Lucas, travel writer

Midnight Sun Season Bask in the sunshine. Wake up in the middle of the night to find the sun shining brightly, people out biking and gardening and walking the dog. With the summer sun shining up to 24 hours a day during the Midnight Sun Season from April 22 to August 20, the subarctic summer is filled with action and brimming with growth. In fact, from mid-May through mid-July Fairbanks experiences 70 straight days of 24-hour sunlight. Whether you plan on going on a nature hike, watching a glorious garden grow, floating down the Chena River or having a late-night dessert on an outdoor deck, the rousing Midnight Sun Season is awesome and rejuvenating. More middle-of-thenight activities include running, biking, gardening and even baseball—where the Alaska Goldpanners start their historic solstice game at 10pm. With low chances of a truly rainy day, the average temperature hovering at 70 degrees and the midnight sun simply refusing to set, our top-of-theworld town enjoys one of the best summers Earth has to offer. Heads Up! Track daylight hours for any day of the year at explorefairbanks.com.

Fairbanks’ everlasting summer sunshine creates amazing growth, and as a result the local farmers markets are extraordinary. Northern farmers claim that produce tastes better because of the climate. Cool nights make the vegetables sweeter and more delicious than those grown in hotter climates. Purchase tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce and more at seasonal markets—or brighten your day with a beautiful bouquet. Local small businesses also turn Alaska produce into for-sale items such as Alaskan jams, seasonings, mustards and more. Artwork, gifts and jewelry adorn the markets—find that perfect keepsake to remind you of your journey to the top of the world.

To witness those lights dancing in the sky is without a doubt one of life’s great highlights—one of those unforgettable treasures. Striking the aurora from our bucket list in the winter wonderland that is Fairbanks was a truly special moment. Ian Shantz, travel writer

Aurora Season Experience the magical northern lights. Fairbanks is a world-famous aurora destination. Spanning all four seasons during nine months of the year, Aurora Season runs August 21 through April 21. Fairbanks’ location directly under the Auroral Oval—a ring-shaped region hovering over the far north—combined with a good balance of clear nights, occurrence frequency and activity allows for excellent aurora viewing opportunities. Additionally, Fairbanks’ low precipitation, distance from coastal areas and minimal light due to low population density consistently contribute to clear, dark skies and optimum viewing. Take a guided tour and chase the aurora with the experts. Drive to a nearby vantage point and wait for the northern lights to appear. Or look for them from a heated “aurorium” cabin, yurt, dome or lodge; on a dog sled adventure; by snow cat tour; while ice fishing or on a flight above the Arctic Circle. Ask your accommodation’s front desk if they offer a wake-up call when the northern lights are out. No guarantees, but the longer you’re here, the better your chances of seeing a great show.

Heads Up! Track real-time aurora activity and find 3-day forecasts at explorefairbanks.com.

Natural phenomena are unscathed by viruses so local guides are still chasing the aurora and have developed ways to safely assist visitors in this pursuit. Whether seeing the northern lights is an unfilled dream, or something that you can’t get enough of, with careful planning Fairbanks can make your aurora viewing wishes come true.

Aurora Viewing in the Fairbanks Area • Intensity varies nightly, with the best displays from late evening to early morning. • Aurora will be visible an average of four out of five nights when the sky is clear and dark enough. • Auroras range in color—typically iridescent green, they can also be yellow, magenta and red.

• If you stay a minimum of three nights and are actively out during the evening hours, your chances of seeing the aurora increase to 90%. • A full moon does not interfere with aurora viewing— in fact, the full moon can enhance the contrast between the landscape and the aurora.

Interior Alaska is where all of the fun happens in the winter! A day full of outdoor adventures with sled dogs, snow machines, or a walk with reindeer and then watching the aurora dance all night! Sherry Ott, travel blogger

Winter Season Winter rocks. With a blanket of snow covering the ground, hoarfrost clinging to the trees and the northern lights dancing overhead, Fairbanks is a portal into a winter wonderland mid-October through late March. Here you can mush a team of Alaskan sled dogs through a pristine forest, watch two-ton blocks of crystal clear ice turned into works of art or hit the trails via snowshoes, skis, fat tire bikes or hiking boots. Skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, curling and ice hockey abound. Challenge snowcapped hills on skis or snowboard or cross-country ski birch-laden trails. Fairbanks is a dog mushing mecca and accessing Alaska’s state sport—dog mushing—has never been easier. Local mushers have a variety of adventures to choose from, and if it’s spectating you prefer, Fairbanks hosts multiple sled dog races. Visits to kennels and even hiking with huskies are other great ways to experience some puppy love. Journey above the Arctic Circle, visit Santa in North Pole or discover the incredible warmth of an Alaska hot spring at the end of an adventure-filled day. Be spirited away by a truly memorable winter expedition in this sparkling land of aurora, ice and snow.

In Fairbanks, ice art is not only remarkable, but commonplace during winter months with sculptures found all around town. The ice is harvested by forklift from local ponds and artists create brilliant sculptures with chain saws and specialized ice carving tools. There are ice museums and local ice events where you can frolic in playgrounds made of ice, skate on all-natural ice rinks and crawl through ice mazes.

Denali National Park is truly a slice of heaven... a pristine and stark beauty that soothes the soul with profound awe and wonder. Karin Leperi, travel writer

Denali National Park Stand in awe. Denali rises 20,310 feet (6,190 meters) and is North America’s highest peak. The crown jewel of the Alaska Range, Denali means “the Great One” in the Athabascan language. Denali National Park and Preserve covers six million acres of pure wilderness and is an easy two-hour drive or four-hour train trip from Fairbanks. In the summer, traverse the Denali Park Road in your own vehicle to mile 14 or journey deeper into the park via tour bus. Fairbanks outfitters offer both COVID-19 friendly road and air tours of the park all year. Flightseeing is also an exciting way to view the Alaska Range and get up close to the Great One. There are many ways to experience the park but make sure you verify your plans before you embark. The park’s varied terrain includes brilliant mountains, pristine rivers and lakes, colorful tundra, alpine meadows, sweeping vistas and abundant wildlife. Along the way you may spot moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, wolves or any of the hundreds of other species that call the park home.

The thirty days that I spent walking through the wilderness of Denali National Park while working on my undergraduate geology research for the University of Alaska Fairbanks were some of the most unique and inspiring days of my life. Every day when I unzipped my tent door, I tilted my head back to look at the massive beauty that is Denali and could not help but wonder, “Why is it so big?” It is one thing to look at pictures of the Great One, but it is a remarkable experience to actually stare up at it. Growing up in Alaska, I have seen many beautiful landscapes, but Denali is truly stunning. Walking through the glaciated wilderness provides an unparalleled feeling of solitude that is special to the park. To me, Denali is truly the heart of the Alaskan wilderness.

Todd P aris/UA F

During Winter Season, beginning in midFebruary, the National Park Service plows the first 12.5 miles of the Denali Park Road to the Mountain Vista Rest Area—where you can view Denali during clear weather.

Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska is like being on another planet. The mountains, best viewed from the sky, look like welcoming gates into another dimension—the Arctic. It looks fake but the colors are spectacular, true and flawless. This is nature at its finest. That’s basically Alaska in a nutshell. Lee Abbamonte, TV personality

Basecamp Extraordinary expeditions. Fairbanks is the perfect basecamp to explore the vast Interior and Arctic. Denali National Park is just two hours away; the Arctic Circle and Yukon River are an accessible four- to fivehour drive; road trips to colorful Interior towns and lodges are easily within reach. Auto rentals, air and ground transportation, guided ecotours, fishing and boat charters and wildlife tours can be arranged through professional outfitters all following COVID-19 safety protocols. Let the warmth of our people guide you through these vast and beautiful lands. Interior and Arctic Alaska invite you to embark on an unforgettable expedition. Go on a late-summer polar bear tour, float a mighty river, hike to see glorious mountain views, fly fish a remote stream, take a flight to see the face of Denali, or simply sit still in some wild place and marvel at nature’s extraordinary gifts.

There are glorious national parks to explore in the Interior and Arctic regions. These parks are mostly vast and untouched wilderness with few or no roads, trails or established campsites. Local air taxis provide flightseeing trips and outfitters guide day trips or overnight campouts to remote locations. Hike through Alaska’s ultimate wilderness or float a remote river to see caribou cross a northern valley, fish a serene alpine lake or simply listen to the call of the wild.

Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve covers 8.4 million acres of pristine beauty, sometimes called Alaska’s ultimate wilderness. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve at 13.2 million acres is the largest national park in America. There are four mountain ranges and nine of North America’s sixteen highest peaks. Kobuk Valley National Park is renowned for half a million caribou and sand dunes created from ancient glaciers.

Arts, Entertainment & Events Nature-inspired art. Captivated by the pristine, all-encompassing wilderness; artists find the Fairbanks region a wellspring for creativity. Museums, exhibitions, local shops, open air markets and more display art of all kinds—paintings, ceramics, masks, found art, sculpture and photography. Culinary artists and gardening buffs appreciate the light of the midnight sun and its boon to local farmers markets, locally sourced eateries and botanical gardens. With so many end of the road artists its easy to find that perfect keepsake to take home with you.

The project was founded in the Fairbanks North Star Borough in July of 2019 by artist Somer Hahm. Alaska's first barn quilt trail is designed to ignite the eyes and minds of Fairbanks by creating accessible, colorful and site-specific public art pieces. Barn quilts, bold geometric paintings of quilt block designs, enliven our shared spaces, honor familial heritage and bring attention to architecture. The cornerstone of the project has been “Flying Geese” which was mounted on one of the historic barns at Creamer's Field in Fairbanks.

Denali Neighbors Denali, crown jewel of the Alaska Range. One of Alaska’s most popular destinations, Denali National Park and Preserve is an easy two-hour drive or four-hour Alaska Railroad ride from Fairbanks. The majestic Alaska Range offers an incredible backdrop to much of Alaska’s Interior. In the park, wildlife abounds with bear, wolf, moose, caribou, Dall sheep and more being commonly seen by travelers. Visitor services are available along the Parks Highway, at campgrounds and visitor centers, in Kantishna and in remote lodges. Around the park, the activities, dining, shopping, lodging, services and transportation are as varied as the travelers. Whether you choose to go on a raft or ATV adventure, ride an exciting zipline, explore the rugged backcountry or simply take in the pristine wilderness, there are plenty of ways to discover Denali.

Wildlife Viewing Fairbanks is the headquarters for many large, unspoiled landscapes that serve as great habitat for animals, including Denali National Park. The remote Dalton Highway crosses large tracts of boreal forest, subalpine and Arctic tundra. Along the way, you may be able to see black bear, caribou and moose. The nearby Chena River State Recreation Area is a wild forest with many sloughs and a mixture of treed and treeless landscape. Moose and beaver frequent this area as well as other small animals like ermine, fox and red squirrels. Moose Moose are a common part of life for most Alaskans. These massive, hulking creatures wander through our sports fields, poke around our neighborhoods and nonchalantly cross our roads and highways. Moose are generally happy to pose for a picture or two, but give them lots of room, especially when calves are nearby. Caribou Caribou travel in large herds during spring and fall migrations but are often seen in small bands or as individuals during the summer. In Alaska and Canada domesticated caribou are called reindeer. In Fairbanks, there are visitor attractions that include experiences with reindeer and are a popular way to learn about these fascinating animals and snap an up-close Instagramworthy photo. Bear Look for bears in summer fishing along streams with spawning salmon. In late summer and fall, they are often found feeding on berries in open meadows or on the tundra. Black bear populations are plentiful in Alaska's Interior, but sightings of this shy animal are rare outside of national parks and state recreation areas. Bring along potent bear spray if you're hiking outside of urban areas, just in case. Fox The red fox is common in the Fairbanks area and can sometimes be seen darting across the road in woody, brushy areas. If you are lucky, you may see one with the “cross” coloration—a dark band crossing the shoulders and back. The Arctic fox is white in winter and gray or brown in summer. Its ears and body are smaller compared to the red fox. Look for it north of the Brooks Range.

Interior Neighbors Breathtaking vistas. This 175,000-square-mile inland area between the Alaska Range to the south and the Brooks Range to the north comprises about 30 percent of the state, making it as large as the states of Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio combined. This area includes colorful communities like Nenana, Delta Junction, Glennallen and Tok. Alaska’s adventure corridor, with its rich gold rush history and spectacular scenery, stretches from Fairbanks along the Richardson Highway to Valdez and includes mighty rivers, mountains and historic roadhouses.

Amy Reed Geiger/Explore Fairbanks

Trekking to ice caves and glaciers, hiking, fishing and outdoor activities are highlights of Alaska’s exciting Interior. Filled with surprises, Alaska’s Interior is reflected in the wide array of activities, dining, shopping, lodgings and services that are available to locals and visitors alike.

Quintessentially Alaskan, Fairbanks is a frontier town with loads of log cabins, end of the road artists, brilliant Alaska Native culture and gutsy pioneers. Fairbanks is enjoying a revival with ever more coffee shops and food trucks, restaurants, locally made libations, public art and spaces, entrepreneurial attractions, activities and events that celebrate life in the far north. Geographically situated in a sweet spot in the Tanana Valley, Fairbanks has the Brooks Range to the north keeping the Arctic winds at bay and the Alaska Range keeping the wet, coastal weather to the south. You can expect dry weather, dramatic clouds, blue skies, little wind, warm summers and cold winters. How to Dress: Make sure you pack a sense of adventure as well as seasonal, casual clothing and shoes for your trip. Dressing in layers is recommended regardless of the season as temperatures fluctuate. Summer wear includes shorts, short-sleeved shirts and sandals, but also plan to pack pants, long-sleeved shirts and a light jacket. Winter gear includes parkas, boots, hats, mittens and snow pants for your outdoor adventures. Check out explorefairbanks.com to view the fun How to Dress for Winter video.

Welcome to Downtown Fairbanks A delightful blend of old and new, downtown Fairbanks is made up of historic buildings dating back to gold rush days, a vibrant contemporary art scene, an array of delicious eating and drinking establishments, museums, shops, the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center and, in the center of town, the iconic Golden Heart Plaza. Stroll the streets year-round and find unexpected public artworks all around town. Pipes (steam vents) are painted, murals abound and sculptures—both permanent artworks and seasonal ice sculptures—beautify downtown streets and businesses. During the Midnight Sun Season, downtown is teeming with flowers and gardens. During the Winter Season, Fairbanks has a storybook-like quality. The Chena River freezes over, snow blankets the ground and lighted snowflakes adorn lamp posts.

River City

www.explorefairbanks.com

Fairbanks is often called “River City” because of the 100-mile Chena River that runs right through the heart of town. Locals embrace the Chena River and it is a natural venue offering yearround activities and celebrations. Take the two-mile river walk along the Chena River and enjoy the interesting sites, sculptures and flowers along the way. Start off at the antler arch at the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center and head towards Golden Heart Plaza, continuing past the bridges lined with flags and stroll down to beloved Pioneer Park.

Air, Rail, Road & Ocean Just 140 air miles or 195 road miles below the Arctic Circle, Fairbanks is the farthest north city in Alaska and in the United States accessible by air, road and rail. COVID-19 has impacted transportation to Fairbanks but many options are still available.

Air Fairbanks is a key player in domestic and international air travel with excellent connectivity. Home to over 500 small aircraft equipped with wheels, floats, skis and fat tires, it is not unusual to see a 747 and a Piper Cub on parallel runways. In the wake of the COVID-19 global pandemic, air carriers have instituted more techniques that reduce the already low risk of onboard transmission. Domestic: Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines offer year-round direct flights to and from Seattle. Summers usually see direct flights from Chicago and Denver with United Airlines and from Minneapolis with Delta Air Lines. Check directly with each carrier for route availability offered in summer 2021. There are a variety of connecting flights that make getting to Fairbanks easy from anywhere in the U.S. International: Fairbanks is the smallest U.S. market with nonstop flights to both Europe and Asia. German airline Condor offers onceweekly passenger service during the summer season between Fairbanks and Frankfurt. Japan Airlines and other air carriers periodically offer charter service from Japan-based and other airports. Regional: Alaska Airlines and regional air carriers, including Wright Air Service and Warbelow’s Air, provide frequent air service between Fairbanks and numerous Interior Alaska rural communities as well as Anchorage. Road To get around town, rental cars, shuttles, taxis and ridesharing

services are available in addition to the Fairbanks MACS Transit Bus System. Statewide shuttle companies provide transportation to many locations. Cars, trucks, vans, motorhomes, motorcycles and bicycles can be rented. Gravel road rental cars and campers are available from specific vendors for travel on the Dalton and Denali highways.

Rail All aboard! The Alaska Railroad provides year-round service to

Fairbanks from Anchorage, a magnificent 12-hour journey that stops in multiple places including Denali National Park. From mid-May through mid-September, the summer train runs daily; visit AlaskaRailroad.com for current schedules. In the winter, the train offers weekend and some midweek service between Anchorage and Fairbanks, allowing passengers to experience remote winter in Alaska from the comfort of a warm railcar. The winter train stops in Denali for those who have made arrangements with tour companies who provide road trips from Fairbanks.

Ocean Cruising the Gulf of Alaska? Visitors can try one of the major cruise lines that offer land tour packages that bring you to Fairbanks and Denali National Park and Preserve. Passengers opting for a one-way cruise often start or finish their Alaska vacation in Fairbanks, touring the rest of the state by road or rail. Another great option is the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS). Multiple vessels offer passenger and vehicle service to many coastal communities in Alaska. Amenities vary on each ship. Both AMHS and cruise options may change due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2020, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), representing 95% of global ocean-going cruise capacity, announced the adoption of mandatory core elements of a strong set of health protocols to be implemented as part of a phased-in, highly controlled resumption of operations. www.explorefairbanks.com

Local Cuisine, Spirits & Markets Local foods, spirits & farmers markets offer culinary delights year-round. From fine dining to food trucks to seasonal markets, the local food scene is delightfully delicious. These businesses are operating thoughtfully and safely during the time of COVID-19 with many offering seasonal outdoor seating, carry-out options and reduced indoor dining. Fairbanks’ eclectic palate has given rise to cosmopolitan cafés offering sushi, vegan, Indian, barbeque, Vietnamese, Italian, Thai and more. If you are looking for some Alaskan-style home cooking, many restaurants use local produce, meat and seafood in their recipes. Try reindeer sausage or grilled Alaskan salmon alongside home-grown Yukon gold potatoes and sweet garden-fresh baby carrots.

Lemongrass Thai Cuisine

Made in Fairbanks

Homegrown small businesses turn Alaska produce into for-sale items such as Alaskan jams and honeys, birch tree syrups and candies, mustards, vinegars and baked goods. Hot Licks Homemade Ice Cream, with its iconic pink parlor, creates premium ice cream using just picked wild blueberries, and Fairbanks boasts three coffee roasters: artsy and welcoming McCafferty’s, A Coffee House, Etc. is a local favorite situated downtown; North Pole Coffee Roasting Company and Alaska Coffee Roasting Co. complete the list.

Thai Food

Fairbanks is wild for Thai food. This firmly established fact is proven by the well over twenty Thai restaurants in the area. Thai drive-thrus, fancy Thai, organic locally sourced Thai, made-from-scratch noodle Thai, super-spicy Thai, food truck Thai . . . the list goes on and on and the quality is remarkably good across the board. Try Lemongrass Thai Cuisine near the university, a hot spot dating back to the 1980s.

Fairbanks Distilleries & Breweries

64

Summon the spirits with a visit to one of nine local distilleries or breweries. Ursa Major uses barley from Delta Junction to craft smooth spirits including Alaska’s first rum as well as Long Winter Vodka. Delightful Hoarfrost Distilling features vodka made by hand and offers its flagship Crystal Vodka by the bottle, while Arctic Harvest truly embraces the phrase “farm to table” as they grow all the grains used to make their high-end spirits. Rounding out the list is Fairbanks Distilling Company located downtown. If you prefer craft beer there are five exceptional breweries to choose from—the “unusually good” Silver Gulch Brewing and Bottling Co. located in Fox that features brews like Fairbanks Lager and Coldfoot Pilsner, the hip and happening HooDoo Brewing Company that offers “local, fresh beer brewed in the heart of Alaska,” as well as Black Spruce Brewing Company, Midnite Mine Brewing Company and the 49th State Brewery near Denali National Park.

Farmers Markets

Fairbanks’ everlasting summer sunshine creates amazing growth, and as a result the local farmers markets are truly extraordinary. One rewarding consequence of Fairbanks gardens is that many local eateries often use fresh produce. Purchase tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini, broccoli, lettuce and more at seasonal markets. You’ll also find fantastic food trucks and stands at the market, so make sure you go hungry!

Bureau of Land Management

Public lands near Fairbanks offer unlimited outdoor opportunities for COVID-19 friendly things to see and do.

Hiking

Public lands accessible from Fairbanks offer unlimited opportunities for day hikes, extended backpacking trips or a casual stroll in the woods with varying lengths and difficulty. Three of the most popular trails within an hour’s drive of Fairbanks are Granite Tors and Angel Rocks located in Chena River State Recreation Area and Table Top located in the White Mountains National Recreation Area. A leisurely stroll through the boreal forest at Birch Hill Recreation Area, Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge or Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary—all within minutes of downtown—will introduce you to the flora and fauna that make the Interior their home.

Fishing

With bountiful freshwater rivers, streams and lakes, Interior Alaska provides ample opportunities for fishing enthusiasts. The Chena River is easily accessible and family friendly for catching Arctic grayling. The Richardson and Steese highways and nearby Chena Hot Springs Road offer a variety of lakes stocked with Arctic char and grayling, rainbow trout, king and silver salmon in addition to natural stocks of northern pike and burbot. South Fairbanks offers Tanana Lakes Recreation Area and near the City of North Pole you’ll find Chena Lake Recreation Area—both convenient places to wet your line, summer or winter.

Birding

Interior Alaska is a thoroughfare for hundreds of species of birds. Sightings are greater during the spring and fall months as thousands of birds make their annual migration to and from their nesting grounds. A walk around Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge and adjacent Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary, less than five minutes from downtown, will lead you through fields and forests full of sandhill cranes, Canada geese, snow buntings and Townsend’s warblers. Don’t forget your binoculars to scope close-up views.

Camping

Interior Alaska is wild, scenic and accessible. Whether it’s the allure of sleeping under the stars or a place to park your RV for the night, private and public campgrounds can accommodate all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. While options abound, one example is the Chena River State Recreation Area—a short drive from town with tent and RV campgrounds and road-accessible public use cabins. Farther south, the Tangle Lakes area on the Denali Highway rewards the traveler with outstanding scenery and good chances to view wildlife. This campground offers campsites, interpretive signs and access to many recreational opportunities.

Riverboat Discovery

Boating

Floating the Chena River heralds the start of the summer and is a favorite local and visitor activity. Whether it be on an authentic sternwheeler, rented canoe or kayak or a trendy paddleboard, there are multiple ways to enjoy the river. Adding to the fun are the outdoor dining decks along the way where you can stop and imbibe an Alaskan beer or eat oysters on the half shell or a piece of scrumptious peanut butter pie. Tanana Lakes Recreation Area and Chena Lake Recreation Area are two other outstanding places to go for a float. Both easily accessible lakes offer wonderful ways to paddle away and bask in the midnight sun.
