According to Tobacco Free Florida, "in 2018, about 25 percent of Florida high school students reported current use of electronic vaping—a 58 percent increase compared to 2017. YOU WOULD HAVE LIKED HIM

This Sunday marks the 40th anniversary of the last Father's Day that I celebrated with my father. He was 49, and I was 21.

You would have liked my dad. He was a compassionate leader who grew up in the Great Depression. He was a partner in Eustis, Dees & Outzen, one of the top insurance firms in the Mississippi Delta.

He also was an election commissioner for Washington County, which was a part-time position in the '70s.

Richard Outzen, Sr. was devoted to his family and church. He coached all five of his sons in YMCA football, placing more emphasis on learning the fundamentals and teamwork than winning. He served several terms as parish council president for St. Joseph Catholic Church and on its school boards. He taught all his children to be leaders and problem solvers, not complainers.

When he returned to Greenville, Miss., after the Korean War and joined the insurance firm, my dad had to figure out how to build a book of business in a place with mostly family businesses that already had agents. He chose to focus on Asian-American and African-American communities that few agents would insure. I remember traveling with him to take Polaroids of homes and businesses to convince insurance carriers to write the policies. I went with him to hand life insurance checks to grieving families when a loved one passed.

In the years before his death, dad would become president of the Mississippi Independent Insurance Agents Association. He was recognized as one of the top agents for several insurance carriers. And as great as those honors were, he was most proud of handling the insurance for nearly all black-owned business in the state north of Jackson.

The Carter administration had several programs to help start-ups for black entrepreneurs. The young business owners remembered how my dad had taken care of their parents and grandparents. The only insurance agent they would use was my dad.

Dad mentored dozens of people, some in insurance, many in other fields. He believed leaders should take stands, even if they were unpopular. Greenville had an annual fundraiser of the Heart Fund, a predecessor to American Heart Association. For decades, the white and black communities had separate drives. Dad agreed to chair the fundraiser, but only if the two drives were combined into one. George Lewis, an African-American painter and dad's childhood friend, co-chaired the fundraiser, which broke all records.

Even though he was only in my life for a little more than two decades, my dad taught me a great deal about leadership, compassion and taking stands. For that, I'm forever grateful.

CERVANTES STILL DEADLY

By Danielle Brown Nearly one year after the tragic hit-and-run that left one woman and an infant dead, Pensacola and Escambia County officials continue to push for pedestrian safety improvements on West Cervantes Street.

With State Sen. Doug Broxson (R-Gulf Breeze) and State Rep. Alex Andrade (RPensacola) heading the pedestrian safety project, the Florida Legislature has approved $600,000 toward improvements to be made ahead of the construction scheduled in 2021.

Even after years of work and research put into the project, officials are concerned Gov. Ron DeSantis could veto the appropriation in his review of the annual budget.

To get ahead of a veto, the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners sent a letter last month to Gov. DeSantis in support of the project.

"This corridor is extremely dangerous for vehicular traffic as well as pedestrians,” wrote the board. "In the past five years, there have been 682 crashes along this stretch of Cervantes Street and nine fatalities.”

Rep. Andrade, who worked closely with Sen. Broxson on this "high priority” project, said they would not stop if they do not gain the governor's support.

"Even if this money is vetoed, this project will start being worked on in 2021,” Andrade said. "It's going to be part of FDOT's five-year plan.”

If the money is not vetoed, Andrade said construction would hopefully begin this year, which the Brownsville community has long awaited.

TWO DEATHS TOO MANY

On June 6, 2018, Nephateria Monique Williams, 28, Quineka Tyon Baldwin, 27, and Neariaah Ikerria Williams, Baldwin's 8-month-old daughter, were struck by a car going over 90 mph while they crossed 66

West Cervantes Street. Williams and the baby were both killed in the accident, while Baldwin was rushed to the hospital.

A press conference was held near the crash site on the night of the accident where Councilwoman Jewel Cannada-Wynn, Commissioner Lumon May and former Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward gave their condolences and expressed their intentions to prevent similar accidents in the future.

"This is horrific—a sad night and a sad event,” Cannada-Wynn said. "We have done some things here—the mayor, Commissioner May, Sen. Broxson—to focus some attention to Cervantes and the lighting and everything here. I don't know if that would have changed the outcome here today, but there are some things in the works.”

The following week, light installation crews began placing LED street lights along areas of Cervantes Street where pedestrians are most at risk. The lights had already been in the city's agenda before the accident happened but were pushed as a top priority after the fatal incident.

In an attempt to accelerate additional traffic improvements after the fatal accident, Christian Wagley, a Pensacola resident and the principal at Sustainable Town Concepts, started an online petition that was endorsed by the Florida-Alabama Transportation Planning Organization.

"The purpose of the petition was to show the local transportation officials how serious the community was about wanting an immediate fix to the very deadly conditions that exist on Cervantes Street,” Wagley told Inweekly recently. "A year later, pretty much none of the demands on that petition have been met.”

The petition, which was signed by over 300 citizens, called for increased pedestrian safety measures on West Cervantes Street, including changing the speed limit from 35 to 30 mph, narrowing the lanes from 11 feet to 10 or 10.5 feet, increasing PPD enforcement of the speed limit and adding designated crosswalks with signals that will be easily visible at night.

Meanwhile, the city and county budgeted a combined $2 million with a supplementary $5.5 million from state and federal transportation funds toward the project, but action was still slow moving because of the process through FDOT. In addition to allocating the funds, the city council also sent a letter to FDOT to fast track construction of short-term safety improvements to the West Cervantes Street corridor.

"It is the City Council's urgent desire that the committed local funds be used by FDOT to quickly construct these safety improvements on behalf of our citizens,” the letter stated.

Included in the letter were several examples of successful pedestrian safety implementations in other high traffic and pedestrian areas in the state. Pictures of midblock crosswalks in the downtown area of Fort Walton Beach and in front of Big Kahuna's in Destin were shown as examples of the redesign in store for Cervantes Street.

Even after this letter was sent to FDOT, no changes had been made on West Cervantes Street aside from the 74 LED street lights. Consequently, the number of car and pedestrian collisions along this dangerous strip continue to rise.

STILL NOT SAFE

Rep. Andrade said that among the many ways these accidents along Cervantes Street can be avoided is installing a raised median.

"Instead of having what looks like five lanes that are just flat across, you have a raised median in the middle so someone walking across can stop in the middle,” Andrade said.

On the other hand, Commissioner May believes more upgrades need to be done than adding medians, crosswalks and other traffic calming measures; for example, lifting the sidewalks up from the street.

"The sidewalks are too small; they're too close,” he said. "That lift is a lift that's not going to happen in the next 5-10 years.

The way it was explained to me in the (Brownsville Community) Center—we had a meeting last Wednesday with the DOT—is you're looking at all your inlets, all your drainage, all your stormwater, all of your right of ways, in the domain and taking property—that's probably a 20 or 30 million dollar lift.”

May continued, "My concern is most of the accidents are not people trying to cross the street. They're people walking on those narrow sidewalks because they're too close.

I believe that those residential houses at its core are too close to the road … I don't know if we have a complete solution for that.”

Wagley believes that although the city's plans for improvements are great, it's ultimately the speeding that poses the biggest threat.

"There's no one single element of the redesign that will magically fix everything,” Wagley said. "It's going to take a combination

of the traffic calming, of narrowing the street, of adding crosswalks. But the single most important thing that has to happen is that the traffic speeds have to be reduced … When cars are only going 30 mph, everybody has time, much more time, to react, and you don't have a bad situation. When cars are going 45, which is what they're doing there, there's not the time to react to a mistake.”

Inweekly sat down with Commissioner May on the eve of the anniversary of the deaths of Nephateria Monique Williams and Neariaah Ikerria Williams to discuss the challenge to make West Pensacola streets safer for residents.

May said the city of Pensacola missed an opportunity for improvement 14 years ago when it failed to implement the West Pensacola Neighborhood Plan, which called for the development of a town center on West Cervantes Street with a public school, library and grocery store.

If the plan had been implemented, May believes it would have slowed the traffic, bringing more walkability to the community.

"I was part of that Westside development plan, where we were going to tear those hotels down and hopefully spur some private development and make that more walkable,” the commissioner said. "When you look at Brownsville and Morris Court, two of the poorest in Escambia County, most of the traffic is split traffic. Those cars speeding through are not residents. They're just coming from the west side to downtown.”

Nevertheless, he is optimistic that West Pensacola and Brownsville can still be revitalized with the right attention moving forward.

"Maybe not the town center with the school because Global went down on Pace Boulevard, but we still have an opportunity because there's a lot of vacant land,” May said.

"There's a lot of opportunity. I think the plan needs to be modified, but I think that, unfortunately, that was a lost opportunity.”

He continued, "Millions of dollars of studies and plans and truckloads full of ideas and concepts, but we've been slow to implement anything in my opinion that has brought about substantial change to Brownsville.

Now, with more powerful people involved in the project compared to previous years, Commissioner May believes there is a strong chance that last year's plans will soon turn into action pending the governor's approval of the $600,000 appropriation.

"We have our state representatives paying attention to Brownsville, and I think the business community realizes that if we don't do something on Cervantes, if we don't develop the alphabet street of the Western corridor to the city, then there's not going to be any more growth,” May said.

The results from the governor's review of the $91.3 billion budget could be announced any day. {in} inweekly.net

SUNSHINE CO-OP ON THE HORIZON BETTER TOGETHER

By Jeremy Morrison Solar power excites financial advisor Jacey Cosentino. She seems to light up just talking about getting power from the sun.

"Both sides of my roof are exposed to sun," she said, literally beaming as she described the rooftop solar power system she has installed on her property.

"I live on a farm in Beulah, and I have five buildings," Cosentino continued. "I felt like I was throwing money out the window, and I didn't like the idea of contributing to the burning of fossil fuels."

Cosentino estimates her solar system covers as much as 90 percent of her power needs. Whereas her power bill used to be around $500 a month, it currently runs between $50 and $100.

"In the winter, it's a little bit more because the sun is out less," she said.

When Cosentino had her solar system installed, she went it alone. She had to educate herself about solar power and then go about finding someone to survey her site and install the system.

The financial adviser had heard of solar co-ops, but that wasn't an option.

"I'd read about it in other areas," Cosentino said. "They get a lot better prices because they're all doing it together."

The lack of solar co-op options locally could be about to change.

Soon, Escambia and Santa Rosa residents looking to install rooftop solar power may have the ability to explore the option as a group.

Over the course of this summer, Solar United Neighbors (SUN), a national nonprofit, is working to organize a collective of property owners interested in exploring the co-op option.

"We are not selling solar; we're all about helping people go solar," explained Julia Herbst, SUN's Gulf Coast co-op coordinator.

SUN is active in 13 states. The organization works to educate people about the benefits of solar power and the process of getting the necessary infrastructure in place.

"The real backbone of our co-op is our education sessions," Herbst said.

In addition to acting as an educational and networking source, the co-op model is also designed to get solar customers a better rate for solar installation because they approach contractors as a collective.

"They get together in someone's living room and review bids," Herbst explained, adding that the group approach typically attracts bids from throughout the region.

"These prices are really competitive. We see some nice savings."

After a co-op group has selected a particular solar installer, the installer visits the individual property sites and evaluates how solar might benefit each site. After the assessments and following quotes, the individual co-op members decide if they want to continue as part of the group or pursue other options on their own.

In addition to being an option that might make sense for individual solar customers— either residential or small-business properties—Herbst said that contractors are usually pretty hip on the co-op model as well.

"We're bringing a large set of informed, hungry customers to a contractor," she said, explaining that the co-op will likely consist of 20 to 30 property owners.

A LOCAL EXAMPLE

SUN has already conducted a couple of local sessions for interested solar customers. There's a few more throughout the summer in various locales in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

"We held our actual launch of the co-op at a solar-powered brewery," Herbst said.

That initial meeting was at A Little Madness Brewing Company on North Davis Highway near UWF. The brewery has solar water heaters incorporated into their brewing process.

"Five panels on the roof, the water feeds through all of them," said David Beddick, who co-owns A Little Madness with his wife Dayna Beddick.

SUN's choice of A Little Madness for its initial local meeting wasn't coincidental.

In addition to employing solar power at the brewery, the Beddicks have also entered in the nonprofit's annual Brews from the Sun competition. The contest is open to breweries using solar power.

"It's to shine the light on some breweries that are trying to do the right thing," Beddick said.

If A Little Madness doesn't clinch the prize this year, they can keep trying as the brewery adds to its solar arsenal. Beddick said there are plans to construct awnings outside to support solar PV panels so the business can begin to offset its energy usage.

"We'll have the photovoltaic out there," he said. {in}

Members of the public who spoke at the town hall were all of the latter opinion, leaving Andrade as the move's sole defender.

"Philosophically, the concept of the public school system we have today is an outdated system," Andrade said. "This is going to be a difference of opinion and a difference of philosophy."

Dr. Edler said she wasn't particularly bothered by the concept of charter schools and said public schools needed to focus on offering students the best available education.

I am publishing this press release to address the controversy that arose over a question recently asked at an event sponsored by Women for Responsible Legislation in Pensacola."

drade's local town hall was billed as focusing on recent educational developments in Tallahassee. The Republican was joined by two Democrats—Escambia County Commission Chairman Lumon May and Dr. Laura Edler, the District 3 representative on the Escambia County School Board.

Of primary concern among attendees was the GOP-controlled legislature's decision to allow public education dollars to be used for private and charter schools. It's a move proponents defend as allowing parents and students a choice when it comes to education, while critics contend that it will drain needed resources away from public education while funneling it towards potentially unaccredited and unqualified private institutions.

"It's like a product," the school board member said. "We have to market our product. If the charter schools are more attractive, we have to be competitive with them."

Chairman May argued that "charter schools are fly by night," spoke about the importance of holding non-public institutions to the standards—"we can't do it without regulations, we can't do it without accountability"— and agreed with a member of the audience in describing a quality public education system as foundational in a democracy.

"Quite frankly," May said, "it's the great equalizer for the American Dream."

While Andrade didn't waiver in his support for the measure, he did concede that "Escambia County has been burned by some charter schools" and that he appreciated the public's input. It wasn't the first time he'd heard the critique though—the state representative's mother is a teacher in Broward County.

"If you could see the novel she sent me via text message, you'd all lay off me a little bit," Andrade said. "The tongue lashing has occurred."

ARMING TEACHERS The state legislature's decision this past session to allow for arming teachers, Rep. Andrade said, was a reaction to the 2018 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. The law makes Florida the first state in the country to allow for arming teachers.

"We're not taking this lightly," Andrade said, assuring that gun-carrying teachers would be required to undergo screening and training. "We're taking serious, adult approaches to solutions. We're not saying everybody should be a cowboy."

Speakers at the Brownsville town hall were decidedly opposed to the concept of arming teachers, asking the representative to square how they were supposed to be "teaching children to add and subtract and to read while carrying a gun on their hips."

"This is not a mandate from the state

for teachers to carry guns," Andrade said, clarifying that both of the school districts in his region—Escambia and Santa Rosa—were electing not to allow teachers to carry guns.

The state representative—who voted for the measure—said he understood that most of the state's urban school districts were taking a pass and argued that the guardian program is intended "to allow some communities that are different than ours the opportunity to put that option in place."

In Escambia, Dr. Edler said, the district would not be arming teachers but would be participating in the guardian program, incorporating armed protection in the way of law enforcement personnel or school security guards.

"You will not be a classroom teacher and a guardian at the same time," Edler said.

May expressed skepticism in the overall concept of guns in schools, pointing to the recent series of shootings in the area and efforts to combat gun violence.

"I'd never support it," the chairman said. "You don't fight fire with fire."

STOP GUN VIOLENCE Following another shooting Monday, June 3, in a string of shootings in recent weeks in the Pensacola area, local officials joined with victims' family members two days later to implore people with any information regarding the shootings to step forward.

Tameika Crayton was among those family members who stood on the steps of Pensacola City Hall and asked the community for help. Her brother, Terrell Crayton, was shot earlier this week as he sat in a car.

He is currently in the hospital.

"We need to put the guns down.

That's all I'm asking. Please stop shooting." Tameika Crayton "My brother is fighting for his life now.

He was on his way to work. He had nothing to do with nothing. He was at the wrong place, wrong time. He was on his way to work, so why? Why the guns?" Crayton said. "We need to put the guns down.

Escambia County Commission Chairman Lumon May said he has known Crayton since he was about four years old, when the child began participating in a local youth sports program. During Wednesday's press conference, he spoke about the personal loss felt across a community due to gun violence.

"The lives that have been lost are not just statistics or social security numbers," May said. "These are children that we work with daily in our youth program and afterschool program and our sports program."

Two of the shootings have been drive-by events, and the string of shootings have resulted in two deaths.

Another family member of a gun-violence victim that spoke at the June 5 press conference was Cindy Martin, whose son, Matthew Sheldon Cox, Jr., was shot and killed in 2012.

"I hate that people are being so complacent, because I have people that live three, four, five blocks away that never heard of my child, of his murder," the mother said.

In her comments, Martin linked gun violence in the African-American community to poverty and infrastructure issues, as well as with the lack of schools in black neighborhoods.

TIMELINE FOR APPOINTMENT The

According to the timeline, the advisory will be appointed on Feb. 18, 2020, and will hold its first meeting on June 25, 2020, the day before the application deadline.

During July 2020, the advisory will meet, screen the applications and identify the semi-finalists. The following month, the school board will identify finalists and conduct interviews. The appointed superintendent will be selected on Sept. 1, 2020, and contract negotiations will commence. The start date for the new superintendent is Nov. 24, 2020.

GAETZ ON IMMIGRATION At his Pen-

Escambia County School Board last month met with Florida School Boards Association search committee to discuss the 18-month timeline for the selection of the district's first appointed superintendent.

The FSBA committee recommended conducting a three-month online community survey to find out how the public views the district's strengths and weaknesses and their priorities for the new superintendent. The survey would go live on Sept. 1 and close on Dec. 1. During that time, the school board will conduct several community forums.

The committee also recommended the formation of a Citizens Advisory Committee to help the board screen the pool of applicants and provide a non-ranked list of candi-

sacola town hall on June 1, Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) discussed with the crowd one of his favorite issues, immigration.

During one exchange, the congressman fielded a question from a man who contended that lawmakers were not doing enough to deal with the immigration issue legislatively.

Gaetz asked the man what Congress should be doing—"So, give me a suggestion."

"I think you ought to lock all those people in a room and keep them in a room until they come out—" the man began.

"Are you talking about the migrants or the congressmen?" Gaetz interrupted, getting a laugh from the room. "The congressmen? Fair question, it's a fair question."

Gaetz continued, "Alright, your suggestion to me is a padlock and a large room, but not for the migrants, for the members of Congress."

It was a little awkward, if the padlockimagery happened to conjure up a recognition that the federal government was very recently roundly criticized for keeping migrant children in fenced cages.

Earlier in the conversation, Gaetz had come down hard on the situation at the border, talking about Mexican drug cartels were slipping in "bad hombres" into the waves of migrants heading toward the U.S. and how he had recently visited the border to get a firsthand account.

"They weren't running; they weren't hiding.

They would surrender, and then within four days of their surrender, we would send them on a plane to anywhere they wanted in the

country, and we would do it at your expense, at taxpayer expense," Gaetz said.

The crowd was beginning to get riled up.

Some people booed the situation Gaetz was describing, while others booed the people that were booing.

"The fabric is full!" a man yelled.

As he did several times during the event, the congressman found himself needing to reign things in.

"We are not going to do this," Gaetz said. "We are not going to yell at each other disrespectfully."

There would be more immigration talk later, when a man would talk with the congressman about how "Mexico is really not a friend of ours" and how "they're still mad because we bought Texas and southern California from them" and how "now they're trying to subvert us by sending out all these people here that are gonna end up voting Democrat" and how when they speak in their given language "you don't know if they're talking about you or not."

"It's true," the man said. "In other words, you better learn how to speak Spanish, OK?" Again, the crowd would get worked up— "English is the American language!" one lady yelled, "Oh, boo your ego!" another replied— and again, Gaetz would need to wrangle a hot mess he'd just watch unravel.

"Let's get to the point," he said, quickly pivoting the man to a question about imposing punitive import tariffs on Mexico as a way of getting the country to a more "cooperative partner" when it comes to immigration.

HEALTH CLINICS When Mayor Grover

Robinson took office, he said he would be looking into the city's health insurance plans and whether or not city employees would be better off taking advantage of community health clinics. Robinson is familiar with that arrangement as employees of Escambia County, where he previously served as a county commissioner, participate in such a plan.

"I think we had a little bit better benefit at the county, and it was a little bit cheaper to the user," Robinson said at his June 3 press conference.

The city's exploration of this option kicks into an earnest gear this week with the arrival of Amy Lovoy, who will be stepping into the assistant finance administrator position. Lovoy previously worked for Escambia County, where she worked with Robinson on the county's health clinic program.

"I worked diligently with Amy to put that employee clinic together at the county, and I think it creates a good benefit and we're trying to see how it might play with us," the mayor said.

Robinson said that Lovoy would be evaluating the city's current insurance costs and what the cost might be if it switched to the health clinics. He allowed that typically such a move works better the more employees an entity has—the county has around 1,000 employees, whereas the city has about 800—but the mayor said he thought the numbers would work.

The mayor also said he felt that not only would the move be financially beneficial to the city but also individual employees.

"They typically go there easier; you manage it more effectively and they don't end up waiting for a longer time to then find out they get sick or something else happens, and it costs you more money down the line," Robinson said.

The first gay pride event was actually a protest.

It was 50 years ago, on June 28, 1969, when New York City police violently raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. It should be no surprise that the 1960s was not a safe time period for the LGBTQ community—or any community that broke from social norms for that matter.

The raid led to six days of protests, and 50 years later, it’s credited for leading the way for gay rights in America. It’s why June is recognized as Pride Month, and this year, Gay Grassroots of Northwest Florida is recognizing the Stonewall milestone alongside its very own—the 10th anniversary of June 13, 2019

PensacolaPRIDE

With each Pride Month, it’s a chance to remember those early activists and reflect on the victories that have followed—like the end of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and beginning of marriage equality across the country, to name a few. But it’s also a time to reorganize and learn about the challenges and goals ahead— such as the Trump administration’s ban on transgender troops and the hopeful passage of the Equality Act to extend civil rights protections to gay and transgender people.

Local Pride

Brian Heike, president of Gay Grassroots of Northwest Florida, credits the

Stonewall activists for opening doors for him. For most of his adult life, he’s worn various hats, working to fight the AIDS crisis in the ‘80s and ‘90s and lobbying Congress for better funding.

“I came out in 1974—five years after Stonewall,” he said. “(Stonewall) was the first time I learned that I was allowed to come out of the shadows.”

And like that first Pride event changed Heike, he hopes more young people will take note of the LGBTQ history through PensacolaPRIDE festivities.

“We had to fight for our human rights.

Somehow all of that can be lost on the younger generation,” he said. “I know how

impatient I was to get all of my rights right then, right now, but it was incremental progress.”

After a string of victories, Heike said he believes there’s a tide against the progress both nationally and locally. (Inweekly has actually interviewed Heike on this topic in relation to the recent comments made

by Rep. Mike Hill. You can read that in our June 6 issue). As he sees it, pushback isn’t a reason to give up but instead fight harder.

“We have to make sure we don’t lose all the rights we fought so hard to get,” Heike said. “I want young people to be aware that they need to get involved or it could slip away from us.”

PRIDE Vibes

Beyond the parade floats and parties you might associate Pride Month with, Heike said PensacolaPRIDE is “a different vibe.” There’s an art show, mid-week mixers, a book reading and the annual Festival in the Park at Seville Square. At this year’s festival, Heike said there will be a transgender active duty service member to present the American flag who will speak about the challenges that transgender people face in the military.

These events are made to be inviting to everyone—regardless of sexuality or gender identity. Heike said he always hopes for people who are unfamiliar with the LGBTQ community to come to an event and leave enlightened.

“We have many straight allies who

accept us for everything we are,” he said.

“It’s cliché, but we are your brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, your neighbors, your friends. You may know someone in the LGBTQ community and not even know it.”

It’s common that putting a face to an issue allows people to empathize. That’s one goal of PensacolaPRIDE. But it doesn’t have to only happen in June. You can be an ally all year long. It starts with an open mind and an open heart.

“Once they do meet someone—a real life, breathing, flesh and blood person—we become a whole human and not just a cartoon character,” Heike said. “You’ve heard of take your kids to work day? How about take a gay person to lunch day? Spend time with LGBTQ people and get to know them.”

In the spirit of Pride and giving back, Sunday’s Child will announce its latest grant recipients on Sunday, June 23.

The Pensacola-area philanthropic organization recently announced its selection of 10 finalists to be awarded one of four grants of $26,500.

Founded in 2014, Sunday’s Child is made up of members who donate funds annually, and 100 percent of funds go to grants for organizations that promote LGBTQ acceptance and inclusion. Last fall, the organization raised $106,000 among almost 200 members.

“The mission of Sunday’s Child is one of acceptance and unity in our diversity,” said Drew Buchanan, president of Sunday’s Child, via a press release. “We’re prideful of the fact that our community is made up of individuals and organizations that celebrate our unique differences.

In just a few short years, we’ve given back nearly half a million dollars to our community, proving just how much the citizens of the Pensacola Bay Area care about diversity in their communities.”

GREAT GULFCOAST ARTS FESTIVAL LOOKING FOR EMERGING ARTISTS

Applications are open for the GGAF Emerging Artists program. This program, developed in partnership with Artel Gallery, gives new artists a chance to be a part of the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival and offers them guidance in what is involved in being in an arts festival.

Applications are open to artists who have limited experience participating in arts festivals and are residents of Escambia or Santa Rosa Counties.

Two artists will be chosen to participate in this year's June 13, 2019

festival. GGAF will waive fees for the two artists and will provide a booth and mentor to help guide them through the process. For more information and an application, visit ggaf.org.

news of the weird IT'S COME TO THIS The Pokemon Co. has made Japanese brides' dreams come true with its announcement that it is collaborating with a wedding planner to offer sanctioned ceremonies with its characters in attendance, dressed as a bride and groom. Yes, Pikachu will stand up with you and your betrothed (as long as you go to Japan to tie the knot), and the icing on the cake is Pokemon-themed food items and a Pikachu cake topper. Finally, United Press International reports, for your scrapbook, you'll have a marriage certificate decorated with Pokemon imagery—surely an item you'll want to preserve in a licensed Pokemon photo frame.

STAY WITH ME HERE Around 1:40 a.m. on May 9, as an unnamed Cocoa, Florida, homeowner slept in her garage, a black Cadillac crashed into the structure, missing her by only inches, according to the 911 call.

The Cadillac was stolen, it turns out, and was fleeing an Orange County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle — which was also stolen and being driven by someone impersonating a police officer. After the crash, WFTV reported, the imposter patrolman continued trying to pull over vehicles before speeding away. The patrol SUV was later abandoned behind a shopping plaza in Cocoa.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINAL Police in Lincoln, Nebraska, responded to a call on May 21 about a domestic assault. They didn't find the suspect, identified as Markel Towner, 26, in the residence, but someone who matched his description was sitting outside in a car. When questioned, the man said his name was Deangelo Towns, but a fashion faux pas led officers to suspect he was lying—a lanyard around the man's neck clearly bore the name "Markel Towner."

After some resistance, KETV reported, Towner was finally subdued and arrested on a variety of charges.

OOPS An unidentified man in Tuscumbia, Alabama, did what so many of us do every day: He went online to Amazon to order some household items. But when his package arrived on May 23, he was alarmed to discover a urine sample from a private citizen, not the shower curtain and rings he'd ordered. "When I reached in and pulled it out (it was) some kind of urine specimen or something like that," he told WHNT. An Amazon representative said the company was "very sorry" about the mistake and would send his bathroom accessories right away, but declined to have him return the sample.

Share Now responded to inquiries from KIRO saying seven different customers tried to rent the car a day after it was left in Smith's driveway but couldn't because of the barricade. Asad Rasheed, who lives in Smith's building, said the errantly parked vehicles are a common problem: "People are not made aware of where to park, where not to park and how to use them," Rasheed said. Share Now has agreed to work with Smith but told the TV station they wouldn't be paying him.

•Damon Hudson, 25, of St. Ives, England, first noticed his missing milk delivery on May 17. "My milk delivery means the world to me. My little brother and sister can't function without their cereal in the morning," Hudson told Metro News. He could see the thief on his doorbell video footage, but he didn't want to bother the police with such a trivial case, so after two weeks of going milk-less, he set up his own sting.

Hudson introduced a couple of new ingredients in the milk bottle: fish oil and his own urine. "Hopefully that's the end. The weirdo deserves it." No word on whether the thief has found a new target.

STAR TREATMENT Gwen Lynch, the lone 2019 graduate of the eighth grade at Cuttyhunk Elementary School on Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts, will receive the accolades and advice of a celebrity graduation speaker, actress and comedian Jenny Slate, on June 17. The island, which has a year-round population of only about a dozen people, is familiar to Slate, whose parents live nearby, reported the Cape Cod Times. Gwen has also been working on her own speech. Graduation festivities will include a potluck dinner, and organizers expect a "packed house": "Most of the town will be there," predicted Michael Astrue, who secured Slate for the address.
