What kind of tree is it?

Liberty Tree

The Liberty Tree is a live oak; it’s a slow growing tree. This is what gives it strength and resiliency in windstorms.

What is the history of tree?

Here’s a look at the woonerf and the Liberty Tree at Southtowne, located in Downtown Pensacola.

The tree was grown specifically for a woonerf. Three years ago, Jerry Pate Design visited Panhandle Growers in Milton, Fla. to select what is now known as the Liberty Tree.

Why is it called the Liberty Tree?

How was the tree grown?

The name “Liberty Tree” is a reference to Pensacola’s history as a Navy town.

Sailors would come ashore on break, or “liberty,” and make their way to the current Intendencia Street.

The name Liberty Tree is in honor of our service men and women.

• First, the tree was developed in pots, then moved to soil. As the tree grew and was trained into an upright tree, it was root-pruned and moved to new locations at the nursery.

• The nursery pruned the large lower limbs from the trunk to ensure they would never obstruct vehicles.

• Now that the tree is in place, it will continue to grow. However, like all newly planted trees, it will take time for the tree to get established before it puts out new growth.

• With a tree this size, it will likely be at least two to three years before there is new growth.

• Due to its location in the compacted soils under the street, this live oak will likely grow slower. Its roots will take longer to spread into the soil.

• Because this type of tree is slowgrowing, it will be very easy to keep the Liberty Tree pruned to the desired size and shape.

• Shaping the lower limbs is a simple task to preserve vertical road clearance.

Keeping the outside limbs at the correct size should be a consistent effort once the tree approaches its desired size.

What is a woonerf?

The concept of a woonerf, a Dutch word which translates to “living street,” was originally implemented in the city of Delft, Netherlands. The residents of Delft wanted to slow automobile traffic in their neighborhood, so they placed obstructions in the middle of the street to force automobile traffic to slow down.

Why do we have a woonerf in Pensacola?

The Southtowne area of Pensacola is truly an urban neighborhood. With more than 2,000 people crossing Intendencia Street each day, pedestrian safety is a top priority.

The woonerf concept was incorporated into the street design to enhance the safety of everyone — pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

CITY OF GULF BREEZE The legal fight over a small parcel of land at the end of Catawba Street appears to have finally concluded, and the city will have to pay out $250,000 for the legal fees of the adjacent homeowners who have contested the public's right to use the land since 2013. Two weeks ago, the Florida Court of Appeals released its decision to uphold the lower court's decision to compel the city to pay the plaintiffs' legal fees. It was the fourth appeal regarding the case that the city of Gulf Breeze had lost.

BUREAU OF LICENSE ISSUANCE A

follow-up report on the handling of the state's concealed carry permitting process pointed to a lack of management oversight by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the agency needs more controls over employees that review applications for private investigator, security officer, recovery agent and concealed weapon licenses. The audit noted the Bureau of License Issuance managers indicated their process was to verbally reprimand a contracted employee who had been the subject of a "management report" and to terminate the contracted employee for a second offense. But that wasn't the agency's practice, according to the report.

The audit came after media reports that 48 employees had made mistakes in the review process, requiring the agency to revoke two concealed weapons licenses and an armed security guard license. At least 300 concealed weapons permits were revoked eventually.

CONGENIALITY The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners at its first regular meeting displayed a level of congeniality that has been missing for some time. Too often, watching a county commission meeting has been like viewing lost episodes of "Jersey Shore," with board members berating and belittling the audience and each other.

Of course, it's difficult to build a positive atmosphere when two commissioners have actively campaigned to help their colleague's opponents get elected or when a commissioner can't get past a vote he lost and takes to social media to let known his displeasure with his fellow commissioners.

The county commission is composed of five people with five different backgrounds, five different life experiences and five different approaches to governance. The commissioners represent five different districts with various needs and challenges.

It's illogical to think they will always agree, but it's not unreasonable to expect them to work toward an agreement. Not all votes will be 5-0.

Some will be 4-1, and others will be 3-2. However, once the decision is made, the expectation is the board will move on to the next issue without animosity or resentment.

The late state Rep. Clay Ford and I served together on the Gulf Breeze City Council for 14 years. We didn't always agree on every issue, but neither of us could remember what the disagreements concerned. We moved on to the next item on the agenda. We often joked to be

a good council member you needed to act as if your emotions about an issue were like an Etch A Sketch that you erased after the final vote.

On Dec. 6, Commissioner Robert Bender, the newest member to the board, gave the vice chairman title to Commissioner Steven Barry. Bender will serve as vice chairman under Barry and will be the chairman in 2020-21. The commissioners agreed to return to rotating the chairmanship by order of districts in November 2021.

"It's only fair that (Barry) have this opportunity since he was so kind to my predecessor," Bender said. "Two months ago, I didn't even think about it (being vice chairman)."

Bender was under no obligation to swap the vice chairmanship, but he wanted to honor Barry's 2013 decision that swapped the vice chairmanship with former Commissioner Grover Robinson. The decision allowed Robinson to avoid having to juggle appointments as Florida Association of Counties' president and Escambia County chairman at the same time the following year.

Bender's decision was also a good one for county residents. He will have a little more time to get acclimated to the board and learn from watching commission chairs Barry and Lumon May. It also sets the proper congenial tone for the board.

THE DEMOLISH OR SALVAGE DEBATE

By Jeremy Morrison The brick-arched facade fronting Garden Street appears to be a gateway to another time, maybe back to the 1940s, when the old school administration building was built next door, or perhaps to the future, when its demolition could make way for a new mixed-use development that could revitalize the dormant city block.

After a couple of years wrestling with the decision, the Pensacola Architectural Review Board decided during a Dec. 5 special meeting to approve developers' request to demolish the Escambia County School Administration Building located at 215 W. Garden Street as well as an adjoining property.

Critics of this approach charge that the city is erasing valuable architectural and cultural fingerprints of history. Proponents, meanwhile, contend that sometimes it isn't feasible to salvage older properties and point to the increase in property tax revenue and the need for new developments downtown.

"This is real serious stuff we're playing with," Quint Studer, one of the developers planning the Garden Street project, told the architectural review board.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Built in 1941, the old school administration building is pretty typical of such World War II-era construction. Designed by Pensacola architectural firm Yonge and Hart, the building replaced a former public school on the site and initially served as a trade school before becoming the district's administrative building.

For the past two years, Two Hundred Garden West Inc., a group of local developers made up of Studer, Jim Reeves, Steve Simpson, 66

Bill Whitesell, Ed Carson and Adrian Lovell, has been working with the city to build a retail-residential project on the site. In past meetings with the ARB, the group was successful in securing permission to demolish everything but the administration building and a few lingering elements—such as the brick arch facade next door and another series of arches on Spring Street.

But, as Reeves pointed out before the group's latest visit with the ARB, the Garden Street project hinges on the demolition of the school building.

"We're not going to buy the property at the price we agreed to pay if we can't tear the building down," Reeves explained. "If we can't tear the building down, we want to go back to the school board and renegotiate the price or we just want to walk, one of the two."

But the city had pushed back on the demolition request, urging the developers to figure out a way to incorporate the historic structure into their project. Or, as some people, like Pensacola District 6 City Councilwoman Ann Hill, pointed out, switch gears and build something that could more easily utilize the existing structure.

"Personally, I would like to see the building repurposed and not demolished, as we have done many times before with vacant historic properties," Hill said. "We would not have thriving small businesses like IHMC, Ruby Slipper, Union House or Perfect Plain had we torn down those buildings."

Hill said perhaps the site would be better suited for an office project.

"Sure, it may be too costly to convert this particular building into apartments; however, that is not the only option," Hill said.

But the developers have not been receptive to such notions and maintained

that the area needs mixed use and that incorporating the school building into their vision was a no-go.

Reeves said their economists have determined that leaving the building on the site would limit the developers to constructing a project valued at $10 million. If the former administration building is demolished, the developers would be able to construct a much larger development that would add $50 million to the tax rolls.

"The bottom line is, you don't have to know advanced mathematics to figure out what that means in tax income to the city," said Reeves.

While plans for the Garden Street development are only conceptual, the potential project calls for 280 rental units, 15,000 square feet of retail space and a 500-space parking structure. It has been referred to as akin in scope to Studer's Southtowne development at the former Romana Street site of the Pensacola News Journal.

In addition to the projected tax revenue, such a project will generate for the city—estimated by the developers to be around $20 million over 20 years—proponents also say that such a development would help steer downtown revitalization from the core of the district westward. They couple their vision to Studer's current renovation of the former SunTrust building across Garden Street and assert such efforts would help energize that sector of downtown.

"This will open up that west side like you won't believe, all the way to DeVilliers Street, I believe," Reeves said. "If you can get a really successful project in that direction, I'm telling you, the money will follow."

Some ARB members, as well as critics of the demolition request, had expressed con-

cerns that the school administration building was a historically valuable structure that sits in the Palafox Historic Business District.

But the developers portrayed the building as one built on the cheap at a time when supplies were scarce and as a structure, now fraught with structural and design hurdles, that has sat on the market for a decade.

"The building has no history whatsoever," Reeves said, noting that he founded the Pensacola Historic Preservation Board and has fought to keep other local properties, such as the long-demolished San Carlos Hotel, from being torn down. "I have a long, long, long history of preserving historic places, but this makes no sense. It just ruins the project because it's right in the center of it."

Escambia County School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas spoke in favor of the demolition and told the board the school district could use the $3 million from the building's sale. Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson also supported the project.

The board ended up voting 7-1 to approve the building's demolition, paving the way for the developers to purchase the property and move forward. The group will have to come back to the ARB with final design plans before actually demolishing the structure, however.

PUBLIC SHUT OUT

In an interesting quirk of the process, Pensacola's Architectural Review Board did not allow for public comment during its Dec. 5 meeting. Realizing this after the fact, Mayor Robinson—who made openness and transparency a cornerstone of his recent mayoral campaign—issued a release following the meeting indicating that the board would reconvene to allow the public to weigh in.

However, a day later, that was no longer on the schedule.

"While I have asked for that and that's what I would like to have seen, that's not what's going to happen," Robinson said.

According to the city charter, each municipal board has independent authority to call for public comment or not. And because such advisory boards fall under the city council and not the mayor, Robinson has no power to demand it meet again.

Robinson said Carter Quina, the ARB chairman, had declined to reconvene. And that was that.

"He has the ability to set that, and the chair decided he didn't want to do it," the mayor said.

"That's where we are."

Robinson said that he now intends to approach the city council in regards to rewriting the rules governing municipal boards, making it to where public comment is mandated.

"If that's going to be the way things are," he said, "I need to reset the rules on how those committees operate, and that's what I plan on taking to council next Thursday."{in} inweekly.net

By Duwayne Escobedo The newest version of the Escambia County Commission put on a how-to clinic for families on how to talk out difficult issues and remain friends afterward.

In their first regular board meeting together Thursday, the five-member board solved lifework balance for themselves and their staff by trimming their meeting schedule.

Steven Barry, who represents District 5, asked for the vice chairman title from newly elected Robert Bender, who took over District 4 from Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson IV. Bender pondered the request and then graciously gave the title to Barry.

When they learned a contractor the

commission hired was for the very first time creating space to dump garbage into at the Perdido Landfill, the commissioners decided to let them finish the landfill project about two and a half months late. The board also planned to recoup an estimated $252,000 cost overrun by seeking damages from the surety bond.

Serving as chairman for the second time since 2013, Chairman Lumon May expressed satisfaction with how the first meeting went.

He drew on his first stint as chairman and things he liked about his colleagues' service as chairman. Overall, the board members seemed to genuinely respect each other's ideas and opinions as they sorted through problems.

"I'm really big on community engagement and public outreach," May said. "But we were meeting 14 hours, 16 hours a day.

Another motivation for fewer meetings and more efficiency for May were his wife, Tammi, daughter, Armoni, and son, L.J. "At the end of the day, this job can be very taxing on your family," he said. "I make no apologies for wanting to go see my children.

I've missed a couple of things for non-productive bickering."

Thursday night's meeting ended just after 7 p.m., so May missed his son's second basketball game of the season.

In the future, May plans to attend a lot more family events and gatherings. The board agreed with him to drop the agenda review meeting the second Thursday of every month.

Instead, the public forum is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. and lead right into the regular meeting slated for 9 a.m.

District 2 County Commissioner Doug Underhill liked May's idea.

"I'm for anything we can do to become much more productive," he said.

The commission members also showed their collegial side at Thursday's meeting.

Bender, the newest member to the board, gave the vice chairman title to Barry. When Barry serves as chairman in 2019-2020, Bender will be his vice chairman and become the board chairman in 2020-21. The commissioners agreed to return to rotating the chairmanship by order of districts in November 2021.

Barry swapped turns with former Commissioner Grover Robinson as chairman. The swap allowed Robinson to avoid having to juggle appointments as Florida Association of Counties president and Escambia County chairman at the same time. It's not uncommon. Underhill and District 1 commissioner Jeff Bergosh switched so the then newly elected Bergosh could get better acquainted with the commission board.

"I do appreciate the gesture," Barry said.

Bergosh added that Bender's action was "magnanimous."

Presented with a company struggling to build a waste disposal site for the first time, commissioners decided to let it complete the $3.7 million project. Originally scheduled to be finished in December, it will be about March before Jones Edmunds gets all the necessary permits for the new dump.

The delays have compounded because of continual problems keeping the groundwater down so it can lay liner to prevent pollutants from seeping into the ground.

However, county staff convinced the commissioners to stick with the company because it had strong subcontractors.

"We've got to finish this project," Bergosh said. "We have to approve this change order or everything comes to a screeching halt."

Bergosh, the past commission chairman, said May ran an impressive meeting and set the tone for respectful relationships among the board members and toward the citizens moving forward.

Evans has made the short list to be the next chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, according to news reports.

Governor-elect Ron DeSantis will be picking his nominee for the post.

Congressman Matt Gaetz is handling the interviews. The other two candidates that Gaetz has reportedly interviewed are Palm Beach County Republican Chairman Michael Barnett and Leon County Republican Chairman Evan Power.

RPOF rules require a candidate to be either a county chair or county state committeeman or committeewoman. Evans is the state committeeman for Escambia County.

However, the governor's choice hasn't always won the chairmanship. In 2015, Governor Rick Scott's candidate wasn't elected, and the governor stopped raising money for the state party.

STYROFOAM-FREE CITY HALL?

Pensacola may be taking a small, simple, somewhat symbolic step onto a greener path. Members of the city's Environmental Advisory Board unanimously passed a motion last Thursday to request the Pensacola City Hall be cleared of the plastic bottles of water and Styrofoam cups ever present at public meetings.

The board decided to request after discussing how best to implement recommendations in a recent report from the city's Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Task Force.

"It's just food for thought that we start right here at city hall," said EAB member Kyle Kopytchak.

Kopytchak had thrown the notion out a bit earlier in the meeting, too, after recalling fellow board member Dr. Gloria Horning having mentioned it.

"We can start right here and come up with an idea to remove the plastics and the Styrofoam from city hall and have an alternative, and the environmental board doesn't need to be guilty as we speak of colluding at the same time," he told Mayor Grover Robinson, who was attending the meeting.

The mayor seemed open to the idea.

"We've got some good Pensacola mugs so that we can put those out," Robinson suggested as an alternative to the Styrofoam cups near the coffeemaker.

Pensacola City Council Executive Don Kraher told the board he felt sure he'd be able to find a council member willing to sponsor the motion and bring it before the council. Three members of the city council—President Andy Terhaar, as well as Sherri Myers and Ann Hill—were in attendance at the meeting.

Neil Richards, EAB chairman, had welcomed the notable attendees earlier. He 010 1

seemed particularly glad to see the mayor in attendance.

"We've never had a mayor (here) as long as I've been on the board," Richards said, "so this is groundbreaking. I truly appreciate it, and I'm excited for the future."

Robinson told the board he looked forward to seeing how aspects of their work could be incorporated into the city's operations.

"I'm very excited to see how this gets incorporated," the mayor said. "Seeing what you've done here as a group is very exciting, and we have real opportunities to position ourselves and be much better and really deal with restoration."

Grover Robinson Robinson then fielded questions from the EAB, diving into discussions about things like the need for breakwaters, the city's tree fund, water quality and the possibility of using Three Mile Bridge rubble as an artificial reef, as well as the erosion and restoration of seagrass.

The mayor also told the group that he appreciated living in a city that had the initiative to form a municipal board dedicated to environmental concerns.

"The fact that we have a committee like yourselves," Robinson said, "I think that says a lot about who we are as a community."

TOXIC CLIMATE One of Mayor Grover Robinson's first actions was to survey all city employees and ask for their insights into the city's strengths and weaknesses.

Employees were also asked to list any questions they have for the new mayor and make suggestions on what he should focus during his first six months in office.

Employees were allowed to reply anonymously but were asked to state in which department they worked. Not all employees listed their departments, but 58 of the 2,723 responses were from the Pensacola Police Department—21 percent.

Several police officers were concerned about pay and health insurance. One PPD employee wrote, "Health insurance for single coverage is great. Family coverage is expensive. Rates for retirees are ridiculous."

Another wrote, "In the police department, our employees, especially civilians, are not paid a competitive wage. When we try to hire or promote employees, we are often met with roadblocks from HR, who often seems to try and get the most out of people for the least amount of money."

He added, "It is difficult to hire quality workers at most of the current salaries.

There does not seem to be a 'let's take care of our employees' attitude from the Human Resources department."

Problems with the new employee evaluation system were also cited, "The employee evaluation system that the city implemented a few years ago is not suited for the police department. It is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole."

Police vehicles and training were seen as areas needed for improvement. It was stated that officers are driving cars on daily patrol that are 8 to 10 years old.

With a young police force, more training is needed, cited several officers. The police station was said to be in poor shape, "I know we just had an expansion, but the layout and design are poor. And there are a lot of areas that are wasted space."

Chief Human Resources Officer Ed Sisson came under fire from the Pensacola Police Department respondents. It was asserted that Sisson had brought a split between the police and the city. One officer described the climate at city hall as "toxic."

The officer wrote, "Human Resources has really done a lot to damage morale among the police department. Please take a special interest in overseeing their actions. Everyone else at city hall is always wonderful. It just seems Human Resources would rather think about how to hurt people rather than what they can do to help the city and its employees."

LEGISLATIVE DELEGATION MEETS

Members of Escambia County's state legislative delegation will hold a public hearing 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at the Pensacola State College Jean and Paul Performance Studio, 1000 College Blvd.

Delegation members will consider local bills, hear presentations from government entities and take public testimony on proposals for the 2018 Regular Session of the Florida Legislature. LEGAL COSTS UNDER REVIEW During his second term, Mayor Ashton Hayward's administration spent over $5.4 million on 40 different law firms, according to the latest quarterly report for FY 2018 that CFO Dick Barker presented to the Pensacola City Council on Monday, Dec. 10. Mayor Hayward spent another $2.2 million on his legal department for the period Oct. 1, 2015-Sept. 30, 2018. The combined total for city legal expenses was $7,714,777.

No wonder that his successor, Grover Robinson, has his hands full determining how to manage the city legal expenses better. At his Monday, Dec. 3, press conference, he talked about asking the Tallahassee firm Nabors, Giblin & Nickerson to review the city's legal situation and offer recommendations on how to create a complete legal department.

"My goal is to hire a good city attorney and allow them to put in a legal process," said Mayor Robinson. "We have a variety of inweekly.net

"I like cold winters, and I like hot summers," Barker said.

Christian Wagley, who's overseeing environmental concerns for the transition team, asked if the city had thought about what it would do when people began using less fuel sources like natural gas and began using cleaner forms of energy.

"We're going to see some things like natural gas go away over time," Wagley noted.

Barker said he considered natural gas to be a clean source of energy and stressed the city was heavily invested in its success.

"That is going to be hard to replace," Barker said of the energy company's impact to the budget.

TOP TEACHERS Escambia County School

District's Community Involvement Office has announced the District's the five finalists for Teachers of the Year. These teachers were interviewed in front of selection committee, and each of the top five will be observed by the committee during a classroom visit in January.

WADING INTO THE MATH During its second engagement, Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson's transition team delved into the city's financials.

"Today, we're gonna provide about a 30,000-foot level review, if you like, of the finances," prefaced Bruce Vredenburg, the team member charged with assessing the city's financial and budgetary particulars.

City Finance Director Dick Barker provided a walkthrough overview. He outlined the city's nearly $240 million budget and explained that each year's General Fund weighs in at around $53 to $54 million.

SPECIAL ADOPTION RATES The Escambia County Animal Shelter is offering a special reduced adoption fee of $50 for all dogs and puppies and $20 for all cats and kittens during December. Adoption fees include spay or neutering services, microchip, heartworm test and the initial vaccinations, including rabies vaccinations.

Escambia County residents will be required to purchase a license at the time of adoption. The license is an additional $11 over the adoption fees and is paid separately. MOMS VISITS MILTON Main Street Milton has been selected to host "Hometown Teams," a Smithsonian Institute "Museum on Main Street" exhibit. The Smithsonian Institute also awarded Main Street Milton

$5,000 to provide programming to enhance the exhibit experience. Selected through a competitive process administered by the Florida Humanities Council, the exhibit and associated events will be held at the Main Street Event Center in 2019.

Museum on Main Street is a Smithsonian Institute outreach program that engages small-town audiences. In partnership with the State of Florida Humanities Council, the program brings traveling exhibitions, educational resources and programming to small towns across Florida. Since 1994, MoMS has visited over 1,400 communities nationwide with a median population of 8,000.

Valley of Death (Flossenbürg Memorial and Museum, Germany) by Gesche Würfel "What Remains of the Day" is a unique collection of landscape photography by Gesche Würfel that explores memories of World War II. This exhibition can be seen in its first museum viewing at Pensacola Museum of Art starting this week.

Following people and places, contemporary visual artist and photographer Würfel explores memories of WWII and the Holocaust through the use of overexposed photos and oral histories from survivors.

Würfel's work has been recognized internationally and exhibited at different venues, including the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh, N.C., and the International Center for Photography in New York City. In 2016, she was named the Juror's Pick for the LensCulture Emerging Talent Awards. She currently is the Teaching Assistant Professor

of Photography at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The PMA will host an artist talk with Würfel in early 2019 where guests and the artist can discuss how her photography demonstrates relationships between trauma, history, identity and memories.

"Her work is compelling and poetic. In particular, the images are rich and multivalent and draws surprising and cogent connections between architecture, memory, history and sites of power mediated through photography," expressed Amy Bowman-McElhone, the assistant vice president of the UWF Historic Trust Museums and director and chief curator for the PMA. The memories of the past often fade with the people they affect, but when Chancellor Merkel welcomed the arrival of one million refugees in Germany in 2015, the memories of WWII raised questions for Würfel. She became interested in the possibilities and responsibilities of Germans because of their history. She was asking herself what this might look like both as a memory and in German culture. The idea to overexpose the photos came when she visited the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp, now Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum, while standing at the roll call area.

The poster design should reflect the

deep, rich jazz music heritage of Pensacola and communicate a sense of the area. Entries should conform to a vertical orientation using a ratio that will fit, with margin, on a final poster size of 18 inches wide by 24 inches high. The poster must include the name of the festival—2019 Pensacola JazzFest. Submission entries must be in low-resolution, JPEG format and emailed to info@ jazzpensacola.com.

There is no limit to the number of entries by a single artist. Each entry must include the artist's name, address, email and telephone number.

ARGO ATHLETIC BAND DRUMS UP SUPPORT WITH $50,000 GIFT The University of West Florida has announced a $50,000 gift to the Argo Athletic Band from The Russenberger Foundation.

Inspired by a passion for music, this donation will grow and support one of UWF’s newest traditions.

“It’s a special moment when community members appreciate the special spirit at UWF and choose to support our students on their journey,” said UWF President Martha Saunders. “The Argo Athletic Band, while traditional in practice, is new to UWF and has already captured our hearts. We are very grateful for the support from the Russenberger Foundation.”

A check presentation was held at an event in the music parlor of the Russenbergers’ home on Monday, Nov. 26, where the band performed and guests were encouraged to make contributions to the program. The Russenbergers’ gift will be used to meet a variety of needs for the band including scholarships, instruments, uniforms, potential travel costs and more.

“I saw an article in the newspaper and thought ‘I would love to help and see the band grow,’” said Ray Russenberger. “I was in the band in high school and know that bands often get overlooked. Music is something that stays with you for life.”

Ray and Valerie Russenberger are both musicians who are known for their patronage of the arts. Their philanthropic support of theatre and music led them to establish the Russenberger Foundation in 1997. The couple enjoys performing together - Ray plays the guitar, piano, five-string banjo and drums and Valerie is a vocalist. The Russenbergers have a history of support through service and gifts to music and theatre in the community. Valerie serves on the Pensacola Little Theatre board, where she also performs. The Russenbergers have also donated to the Pensacola Children’s Chorus and the Center for Fine and Performing Arts on UWF’s Pensacola campus.

“It has been an exciting year for the Department of Music and the Argo Athletic Band,” said Dr. Sheila Dunn, chair of the Department of Music. “There is nothing like hearing our fight song and alma mater performed live by our incredible students who hail from departments all across campus including psychology, engineering and communication arts. Music enriches their lives as students, and I know music will continue to distinguish these young professionals as they begin their careers. The Russenbergers believe in our students and the Argo Athletic Band and have made a transformational gift that will help to get us marching in 2020. Their kindness and generosity is inspirational.”

The Argo Athletic Band formed this fall and played in the stands during the UWF home football games, entertaining the crowd with a more traditional atmosphere. The band will also play at UWF basketball games this spring and performs at select University functions. In its inaugural year, the band has nearly 60 members, representing every UWF college. Membership of the band is open to any UWF student with a music background.

news of the weird SEEMS LIKE AN HONEST MISTAKE John Stevenson of Inverclyde, Scotland, hit a bump in his plans to vacation in the United States on Dec. 3 when his visa was denied after he declared himself a terrorist while filling out a Department of Homeland Security online form commonly known as ESTA. One of the questions on the form asks, "Are you a terrorist?" Stevenson, 70, told The Independent that the website "must have jumped from No to Yes without me knowing," adding that the site kept timing out and crashing as he and his wife, Marion, tried to answer the questions. "I even called the border control in the U.S. and gave them my passport details," he said. "They looked up my ESTA number and said, 'You're a terrorist.' The only time I've been in court was for jury service. Marion is sick about it. ...

I don't know why that question is on the form in the first place." (UPDATE: United Airlines refunded the Stevensons' airline tickets and gifted them two free flights to New York once their visa troubles are all worked out.)

LOL The animal rights group PETA launched a new campaign Dec. 4 designed to remove some common animal-related idioms from the English language. CBS News reports the group tweeted suggested alterations to phrases it says are verbal vestiges of "speciesism" and perpetuate harmful messages. PETA offers these alternatives: For "bring home the bacon," try "bring home the bagels." "Take the bull by the horns" should be "take the flower by the thorns." And "kill two birds with one stone" morphs into "feed two birds with one scone."

PETA likened the use of the original phrases to racist and homophobic language: "Phrases that trivialize cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are." Reaction on social media was swift.

Maybe PETA should have let sleeping bags lie.

UPDATE In The Hague, Netherlands, motivational speaker Emile Ratelband, 69, will not turn 50 on his next birthday, as he had hoped.

As reported earlier, Ratelband petitioned the court in November for an age change, saying he feels discriminated against both in the career realm and on Tinder. But the Associated Press reported that on Dec. 3, a Dutch court rejected his plea to become 49, saying he did not convince judges that he had been discriminated against and that "Mr. Ratelband is at liberty to feel 20 years younger than his real age and to act accordingly," but noting that changing his age would nullify any number of records from public registers. Ratelband hopes to appeal.

GOVERNMENT IN ACTION Yoshitaka Sakurada, 68, a 22-year member of Japan's parliament, was named by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in October to two new posts: cybersecurity and Olympics minister for the country. But according to Reuters, at a committee meeting on Nov. 14, when a member of the opposition asked Sakurada a "gotcha" question about his computer literacy, he admitted: "I've never used a computer! ... I've always directed my staff and secretaries to do that kind of thing."

He assured the lawmaker there would be no problems. Mmm-hmm.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS A successful heist at an electronics retail store requires careful planning and attention to detail — a fact that appears to have escaped three men in North Raleigh, North Carolina, on Nov. 12. That night, the News and Observer reported, an employee of the store called 911 to report that three men had entered the store with semiautomatic weapons and ordered workers into the stockroom. One of them was carrying a cardboard box, officers learned, which he used to load up mobile phones and smart watches.

The men also filled two crates with merchandise, which totaled more than $26,000. When the robbers left through the back door, they took the crates with them, but forgot the cardboard box which, serendipitously, sported a shipping label with an address on it. Police used the address, along with a mug shot from a previous crime that matched an image in the store's surveillance video, to track down Brian Lamonte Clark, 22, and arrest him for robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.

• The Lucardo Escape Rooms in Manchester, England, were the site of a misguided breakin on Nov. 29 when two thieves ransacked a fake bank vault as if it were the real thing. The Manchester Evening News reported that more than 50 surveillance cameras captured the duo's antics as they broke into fake safes and opened drawers that held only puzzles. "They must be Manchester's stupidest burglars," said Lucardo director Ian Pownall, 26. The business lost about 100 pounds in cash, but damage amounted to about 1,000 pounds — not to mention lost revenue while the business cleans up. "We're a small, family-owned business, so even a couple of thousand pounds will have an effect on us, particularly before Christmas," Pownall said. {in}
