TOMMY THRALL The former voice of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos and Southern League Broadcaster of the Year has been named the Cincinnati Reds' new play-by-play announcer. Thrall, 35, replaces legendary radio voice Marty Brennaman, who had announced at the first of the 2019 season that he would be retiring this year after 46 years with the team. During his seven-year stint in Pensacola, Thrall also announced University of West Florida football and basketball games. TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN Last month, Take Stock in Children recently introduced 34 new scholarship recipients and their mentors—29 new seventh-graders and five alternates from the eighth and ninth grades. The additions brought the total to 138 students enrolled in the program, which is offered by the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation. Students will receive a college scholarship upon graduation from high school as long as they maintain good grades, attendance and citizenship, remain crime- and drug-free and meet weekly with a volunteer community mentor.

ASHLEY MOODY The Florida Attorney
General doesn't like a proposed constitutional amendment that would open primaries to all voters regardless of party affiliation. All candidates for an office, including partynominated candidates, would appear on the same primary ballot. The two highest votegetters would advance to the general election. Moody filed a Supreme Court brief claiming the ballot summary was unclear and asserting the proposal would give "party bosses" control of the nominating process. No, AG Moody, it does the opposite. More people could run and more voters could participate.
ECAT RIDERS Last week, riders of Escambia County's bus system were frightened by incompetent news reporting, an opportunistic commissioner and union leadership that overacted. The Escambia County Commission voted, 4-1, to repeal a special district set up for ECAT. The vote did nothing but eliminate bureaucratic red tape, but WEAR-TV made it seem the dissolution of the district would lead to cuts in gas taxes, reduction of routes and firings. Commissioner Doug Underhill knew better but fed the hysteria and baited the union into attacking him. JOHN MACIVER By a 3-1 vote, the Florida
Cabinet appointed Governor Ron DeSantis's deputy general counsel as the chief judge of the Division of Administrative Hearings. MacIver has never been a judge. His main qualifications appear that he worked briefly for the National Rifle Association and he is president of the Tallahassee lawyers chapter of The Federalist Society.

SOUL BOWL CELEBRATION This weekend, the Southern Youth Sports Association and East PensacolaMagee Field Rattlers will play at Pensacola Blue Wahoos Stadium in the 28th annual Soul Bowl, a full-day showcase of area youth football and celebration of community unity. Five age divisions ranging from 6-under to 14-under will be playing on the field. Players and their families will see the players' faces displayed on the big screen. Each team will have a full complement of cheerleaders. In all, more than 600 children will be on the field. Inweekly has been involved in the Soul Bowl since 2007 when SYSA co-founder Lumon May invited us to help sponsor and promote a truly grassroots event. When I walked onto Legion Field, I felt like I was back in the Mississippi Delta. Grills were fired up, and they served hamburgers, hot dogs and barbecue. The Rattler and Tiger supporters playfully teased each other. I listened to dozens of tales of past great games and plays. One of the greatest moments was the unity circle when May, community leaders and the coaches for all the teams stood in the middle of the field holding hands. We all stood together as one community, forgetting rivalries and disagreements, showing all the children and their families that we are greater together than apart.
Eight years ago, Quint Studer approached May about moving the Soul Bowl to Blue Wahoos Stadium. Studer wanted the stadium opened to the entire community, not just one segment, and agreed to underwrite the cost to relocate the daylong showcase to the Maritime Park. I was worried the move would take away the neighborhood aspect and the tailgating of the Soul Bowl. Admittedly, I was also concerned that I wouldn't be able to buy any ribs. May disagreed. He saw using the Blue Wahoos Stadium as an opportunity to let a segment of the population play in the park that never would have a chance to do so without the Soul Bowl. Most of the children would never play or cheer on the college or even on the high school level, but on Soul Bowl weekend, they would all be stars. The players and their families would come to see the Maritime Park as their park, too. He also figured out a way to add food vendors to serve food outside the gate, so I still got my barbecue ribs. After all, you can't have a Soul Bowl without ribs. Gates will open at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12. The first game will begin at 8 a.m. The general admission ticket is $9 for all ages. Children 2-under will be admitted free. Reentry will be allowed by showing the ticket. Please join us. {in} rick@inweekly.net

COMMUNITY RESPONDS TO OFFICER'S FIRING
By C. Scott Satterwhite Three months after the shooting death of Tymar Crawford, the Pensacola Police Department announced the termination of Daniel Siemen—the officer who shot Crawford to death in front of his home on July 5. Pensacola police officers attempted to stop Crawford after stating that they smelled marijuana smoke coming from his car. After what was described as a "slow pursuit," Crawford eventually stopped his vehicle. Police alleged he resisted arrest, but eyewitness accounts offer different versions of events. Pensacola Police Department spokesperson Mike Wood told WEAR-TV 3 that Crawford attempted to "disarm one of the officers by taking his taser, and shots were fired shortly thereafter." Crawford's partner, Kimberly Henderson, witnessed the shooting and said Crawford was holding his hands up when an officer started punching him. A cell phone video taken by another witness showed evidence of a struggle and people screaming, followed by the sound of several gunshots. Sarah Brummet, a neighbor of Crawford, was outside of her home with her children when the incident took place.
"When I heard the gun go off, just a couple hundred feet away, I ran," she said. "I heard shot after shot. I didn't know who was shooting or in what direction, and I made my kids get down and get to the safest room in the house. Later, I found out that the cops had killed my neighbor in his yard." Last month, the Pensacola Police Department released the name of Officer Daniel Siemen as the man who shot and killed Crawford. As per policy, the police immediately opened an internal investigation on the shooting. The investigation led to the firing of Officer Siemen. Officer terminations after a deadly shooting are incredibly rare. When asked if he was aware of any similar instances in the Pensacola Police Department, Officer Wood said that he was "not aware of" any other incidents. "We work hard to develop and maintain trust in our officers by all members of our community, and if an officer violates that trust, we take appropriate action," said Police Chief Tommi Lyter in a statement released on Thursday, Oct. 3. "We want residents to know that this incident is not reflective of the training, policies, procedures or culture of the Pensacola Police Department." Unrelated to the PPD investigation, State
Attorney Bill Eddins announced last month that his office would investigate the shooting and present its findings to the Escambia County Grand Jury, a process expected to take 60 days. After the grand jury issues its report, Eddins said video footage of the incident would be released to the public. Ieshia Williams, an organizer with the civil rights organization Dream Defenders, was surprised "to an extent" when she learned of Siemen's termination. She told Inweekly, "I figured it would happen, but I wasn't sure it would happen in this time frame." Besides attending several meetings with city government and holding a "People's Assembly" town hall meeting in Crawford's neighborhood, Dream Defenders helped lead marches in July and August in which hundreds rallied at police headquarters sharing the demands of the family, which included the firing of the police officer involved in the shooting. Organizers with Dream Defenders see this first step as a victory. "They could've easily ignored the fact that there were protests going on," said Williams. "And I think they likely wanted to ignore it, but they knew that Daniel Siemen really screwed up." Williams said that she is certain that the protests ultimately influenced the decision to terminate Sieman. "The pressure that was put on them meant that they couldn't sweep it under the rug and ignore it. As much as they might've wanted to ignore what had happened, they couldn't," she said. "Us showing up to not only the police station but [also] showing up at city meetings made it very clear that we're not going anywhere." Traveling at the time of the announcement, Haley Morrissette heard the news through social media. Morrissette immediately described herself as feeling emotional. "The Pensacola Police Department did the right thing in firing Daniel Siemen. Now the family can rest better tonight." Morrissette leads the local chapter of
Dream Defenders, whose stated goal is to "make powerful change come to Florida." Morrissette hopes that, with this announcement, "the community can understand that together, radical change can happen in the city of Pensacola." She added, "We look forward to what moves Bill Eddins will make, as well as Mayor Grover Robinson, because we still have many demands that need to be met in order for there to be complete restoration and justice." Among the demands, created by the family, are "deprioritizing low-level arrestable offenses," quarterly anti-racist training, restitution to the family and "establishment of an all-community police accountability board." Williams stated, "The rest of our demands need to be met. We absolutely need a police oversight committee. We're very intentional with what we're doing, and we have all the motivation in the world to stay in this fight." Word of the PPD announcement spread through Crawford's community quickly. Like Morrissette, Brummet said that she too was "overwhelmed with emotion" and "had to fight back tears at work." For her and many members of Dream Defenders, the shooting was very personal. She said, "This is more about the fact that we all see ourselves in the people we're supporting more than anything else." Williams' immediate concern was for Crawford's family. "I want for them to be able to find the joy in their lives that they deserve. I want for them to be able to feel at peace, as much as they possible can, especially because of what happened," she said. "I want for them to be able to know that they don't have to worry about this sort of thing anymore." As she advocates for the family, Williams is also hopeful that the work of Dream Defenders will ultimately lead to a safer community. "My hope is that what happens with the city's response makes it possible that they genuinely trust that this isn't a concern anymore, that what happened will never happen again." {in}

2019 RAT PACK REUNION Council on Aging of West Florida announced the ninth annual Rat Pack Reunion has been set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Skopelos at New World. Every year, a committee selects four outstanding business and philanthropic leaders to honor. The black-tie fundraiser allows the senior services agency to increase resources and awareness for its various programs, including Meals on Wheels, adult daycare, companionship, respite care and more. This year, the honorees are: Ashton Hayward—His eight years as mayor shaped Pensacola into what it is today—a vibrant hub of ideas and opportunity. After a few years in New York City working for AT&T, Ashton moved back home to open his own real estate company before taking public office as the first "Strong Mayor" in 2011. His current work at the Andrews Research and Education Foundation represents the organization on a global scale. Michael Murdoch—He brought the
technology industry to Northwest Florida in a new way through his creation of AppRiver. He attended the University of Georgia and always had a passion for the technology industry, creating applications long before AppRiver. Within a few years of founding his signature company, it was worth millions. Murdoch has since sold AppRiver and is enjoying seeing the world with his wife, Addie. Michael Riesberg—Dr. Riesberg is an ear, nose, and throat doctor in Pensacola. After retiring as a Navy captain, he opened the Riesberg Institute to provide ENT services in Pensacola. Not satisfied with just practicing medicine, Dr. Riesberg works to improve his field by inventing various medical devices. A patron of the arts, he is heavily involved in the local opera community. Known as the "Opera Doc," he is the only doctor that many professional singers trust to operate on their throats. It is difficult to find a local cause that he has not been heavily involved in. Brenda Vigodsky—She worked closely
with her late husband, Fred, to build the business community in Pensacola for decades. Their various businesses ranged from clothing stores to restaurants to a television broadcast station. Known for her class and tact, Brenda has been involved in many nonprofits in Pensacola. Today, her close involvement with the Pace Center for Girls has changed the lives of the young girls involved. Brenda can also be found cheering for the Florida Gators and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Now in its ninth year, the Rat Pack Reunion recreates the glamorous old Vegas styles and atmosphere of yesteryear's Rat Pack by honoring Pensacola's own celebrities with a gentle roast, dancing, dinner, free cocktails and more. To date, the event has raised more than a million dollars for Council on Aging of West Florida and the 2,200 seniors in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties the organization serves. To purchase tickets, sponsor the Rat Pack Reunion or for information on the event, visit ratpackreunion.com.
ECAT MELODRAMA Last week, WEAR-
TV made it seem that an agenda item on the dissolution of the special district for Escambia County Area Transit would amount to the county taking control of the mass transit system. According to the report, Escambia County Commissioner Doug Underhill said if the county took control, routes would be cut and jobs would be lost. The reporter, Renee Beninate, tweeted, "Commissioner Doug Underhill hopes to save least $4.5 million a year by cutting bus routes and jobs in the county. That way, commissioners could repeal a 4-cent gas tax that funds the county's transportation services right now. Full story tonight at 10 on @weartv #C3N." Sadly, the local ABC affiliate fell for Underhill's political trap without understand-
ing the issue or the commissioner's motives. County Attorney Alison Rogers told Inweekly the vote would have no impact on mass transit. The county has had control of ECAT since 2017. Nothing would change if the special district was dissolved. The county commission would gain no more power over the system. Predictably, the television report concerned ECAT workers. Mike Lowery, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1395 president, sounded off on the prospects of losing the transit authority at the Wednesday, Oct. 2, press conference. "You have not given it a chance to even operate," Lowery lamented, contending that county commissioners were giving up on the special district his union fought for two years ago. When Inweekly caught up with Commissioner Underhill after the presser, his tone had changed. He said, "It's a nothing burger. It doesn't do anything. It doesn't mean anything." However, the WEAR-TV news report led Lowery to believe repealing the special district hinted at additional motives. After all, Underhill had brought up cutting gas taxes in 2017, 2018 and 2019 but failed to muster the two additional votes he needed do it. "We're concerned there is a hidden agenda, which Commissioner Underhill put out there in the pubic, which is to cut service," the union president said. "I think their intention is to squeeze the system and make it smaller and not successful." At the commission meeting on Thursday, Oct. 3, the commissioners showed little support for the special district. "This is removing a layer of government," explained Commissioner Robert Bender, attempting to assure ECAT employees that the move would not impact jobs or routes. "I support the ECAT system. I want to see our routes improve; I want to see our ridership go up." He added, "I did ask the question, would

it make it any easier to dissolve ECAT, and the answer was no." Escambia County Administrator Janice Gilley and Clerk of Court Pam Childers said that the special district required added accounting and reporting responsibilities, some of which the county has not actually been adhering to. County Attorney Rogers said the district amounted to "a paperwork shuffle" and was "an extra layer of government that could be pretty easily gotten rid of." Lowery said that the county should have communicated better about its intentions to do away with the authority. He requested commissioners hold off on a decision until after meeting with ECAT representatives.

"I've heard more tonight than I've heard in the last two weeks trying to find out what the basis of this was," Lowery said. Cathryn Andrews, legal counsel for the national Amalgamated Transit Union, traveled from Maryland to ask the county to reconsider. She said that the district arose out of negotiations with ECAT unions as part of the process that saw the employees moved under the county, and as such, further negotiations should be held prior to dismantling the district. "I want to emphasize that the special district was not created in a vacuum," Andrews said. "It was created for a special purpose in a specific context, and removing it should not be a unilateral decision."
LAST BLAST RIDE WRISTBAND Purchase a special $23 wristband, good for unlimited rides on Midway until closing.
Commission Chairman Lumon May said that he would not be supporting the move to dissolve the special district and was supportive of ECAT's mission, but he seemed to know the tally of the vote that was about to be thrown upon the dais. The commissioners ended up voting 4-1 to shed the weight of the special district.

ALL HAIL THE QUEENS
TALKING PASSION AND PERFORMING WITH PENSACOLA'S "BEST" DRAG QUEENS By Jennifer Leigh
Flashback to a recent Sunday afternoon—the scene of the Inweekly Best of the Coast cover shoot. The mood is a little chaotic and a lot glamorous as four of the area's best drag queens get camera-ready. There's dozens of disco balls, a clothing rack of colorful costumes and a mix of Lizzo and Beyoncé playing in the background. Despite the diva on-camera personas, there's a lot of camaraderie behind the scenes. Lauren Mitchell, who has been entertaining the Pensacola area for more than 30 years, helps Monica Heart get into her shimmering sequin dress. Later, Monica will reciprocate the favor by helping Lauren select the right necklace for one of her ensembles. "(With drag), you kind of teach each other and become a family," said Monica.
THE QUEEN OF THE QUEENS
This year is the first time Inweekly added "Best Drag Queen" to Best of the Coast, with Monica taking the inaugural win. While drag is nothing new—and certainly not to Pensacola—it seems that the local drag scene has recently been put back in the spotlight after some dark times. Lauren started performing in drag in 1987. "I saw a show, tried it and never stopped," she said. "I love that you get to emote freely, entertain and inspire."
"I love that you get to emote freely, entertain and inspire." Lauren Mitchell In those early days, Lauren said she had to learn the tips and tricks of the trade the hard way. "There was no YouTube, no Pinterest," she said. "You had to figure out the makeup and how to make your own costumes on your own. It was just you and a hot glue gun." Lauren did figure it out and performed not just at clubs but at Christmas parties in Milton, and even at the National Naval
Aviation Museum where she performed as Cher singing "If I Could Turn Back Time," for a RE/MAX Realty convention. "I'm the only drag queen that can say that," she said proudly. Fast forward to 2016 when Emerald City shut its doors. It was just one of a few nightclubs in Pensacola and one of the more popular clubs to catch a drag show. For full-time performers like Mitchell, the loss of venue meant a loss of income. "I went and got a part-time job. I warned everybody," Lauren said. That part-time job then became a promotion, to the retail manager for MAC Cosmetics. And if you've seen Lauren's immaculate makeup, it's easy to understand the transition. Now, she performs when she wants to, not just out of necessity. "It's brought joy back into it," she said.
ALL HEART
Put Lauren in front of a camera and you recognize she's a pro. She knows her angles. And to many of the younger queens she's someone to look up to—a "Drag Mother," said Monica. Monica was a former ROTC student who had a dream of being on stage. She remembers celebrating her 18th birthday at Emerald City and approaching one of the drag queens—Valerie Heart—about becoming a back-up dancer. Instead, she got a makeover. "Everybody was in awe," Monica recalled of the transformation. She performed at a Drag-a-Rama contest, and it was Lauren who convinced her to get on stage with "the regular girls." Monica, also known as the "Princess of Pensacola," is now one of the "regular girls" performing and competing, and winning, in drag pageant shows. "Performing was my dream," she said. "It still is." As a performer, Monica Heart (the name pays homage to the drag queen that convinced her to start), enjoys telling a story through a song.

"I'm always thinking about if I was going to the concert of the singer I'm performing—what would I expect from them?" she said. "I want them to be fully entertained for those three minutes." Monica not only dances and struts to a beat, but she does gymnastics—in heels no less. She says she started incorporating back handsprings and splits into her act after she lost a ponytail and dropped into a split to recover. Another fun fact about Monica—she's colorblind, but you wouldn't know it from her well-coordinated style. She said she's humbled by the recognition as "Best." Even if she's only on stage for three minutes at a time, and even if those aren't her lyrics she's singing to, she's giving you everything she's got. "It comes from what I feel," she said. "I don't ever want to be fake. It's coming from my heart."
BRINGING IT BACK
The history of drag dates back to the late 1800s, but as far as modern-day drag goes, it used to be an undercover affair. Now, you can watch drag queen makeovers on YouTube and enjoy a drag show with your mimosa at 10:30 in the morning during brunch. "People weren't always allowed to dress like this; they'd wait until it went dark to go out," said Heart. "Now, we're doing shows at 3 p.m." Heart said the drag queen shows are more "spread out," now with performances at The Cabaret and The Round Up and even some newer venues like bingo at Dolce & Gelato and brunch at The Vineyard. Glen Hill, owner of The Vineyard in East Hill, started hosting tea dances around 2016 and then drag brunch last year. These events were different from the average nightclub drag show because they were during the day. The Tea Dances originated in big cities across the U.S. and include dance music, drink and drown packages and drag shows. Drag brunches were designed to be more family-friendly. "They sell out every time," said Hill. "I didn't really think of them as a business opportunity. I just wanted to showcase drag shows outside the element of bars and give people the opportunity to understand the diversity of the community." These shows bring diverse customers. Hill said he's had patrons come from Fort Walton Beach and South Alabama. And the age range is 21 to 80. "Our senior citizens love it," he said. "No one wants to leave when the show's over," he added. "The performers work very hard. It's always a different show—and you don't have to stay up past your bedtime." Drag shows have often been tied to the LGBTQ community, which is likely why they were taboo for so long, but Hill said he's noticed attitudes change in recent years. "It's changed in Pensacola and across the country, and the world," he added. "This is not about perversion or sexual identity. This is entertainment. People appreciate the art and seeing their favorite celebrities impersonated. There's Dolly Parton impersonators, Cardi B, Whitney Houston ... drag queens create their own style. It's absolutely fun." October 10, 2019
A NEW GENERATION
You can't mention drag queens and not mention the impact the reality competition show "RuPaul's Drag Race" has had on the drag community. It's paved a way for young, upand-coming performers and helped put drag queens in mainstream pop culture. Terrah Card is considered one of the "baby queens" of the bunch, having just started performing in February 2018. Her first performance was an amateur drag show at Pensacola State College. She taught herself how to sew elaborate costumes with large, 3D headpieces. At the Inweekly shoot, she shows off a recent creation that's likely more subdued than her other outfits—a black and lime green houndstooth bodysuit and cropped jacket. "I've never taken a sewing class. I just look it up on YouTube," she said. "A well-rounded queen can sew, perform and style wigs." Outside of the padding and wigs, Terrah said she's self-conscious, but she found her confidence in drag. "Once I started performing, I found I was really good at what I do," she said. 'I'm super confident on stage." Drag has also given her a sense of family when she couldn't find acceptance at home. "I haven't been to Thanksgiving in three years," she said. "My mom likes to know what I'm sewing and said she's proud of me no matter what ... but you can find other people that accept you to consider family. There's a sisterhood with drag queens." Madame Hex, another of the younger drag queens, grew up in Milton watching "RuPaul's Drag Race." Her first performance was the senior showcase in high school. "It went terrible," she said with a laugh. "But it was a really cool experience. I'm really happy when I perform. I especially enjoy hosting events and getting to talk on the mic." Her goal is to be a full-time performer. She rehearses at home, working on dance routines and rhythm. Her favorite part of the process is when it all comes together in the end. It's "very satisfying," she said. Until she's on stage full-time, Madame Hex delivers pizza, working from 5 p.m. to midnight. Sometimes that money goes right back into her passion. "It costs a lot of money to do drag," she said. "Sometimes you make $40 or $50 in tips, but that doesn't even cover the cost of hair." It's a lot of work to prepare and perform a drag show. It's also "surreal." "We have the chance to expose people to this art and change people's mind about what drag is," said Madame Hex. Drag is over-the-top and dramatic, but it's also kind of relatable. We've all had grand daydreams of standing in the spotlight. Drag queens just turn those fantasies into realities. That's how Monica Heart sees it. "You can't tell me you've never danced in your room singing Beyoncé songs into your hairbrush." free will astrology WEEK OF OCTOBER 10 ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): "Love is when you meet someone who tells you something new about yourself," wrote poet André Breton. I think that's an excellent principle to put at the top of your priority list in the coming weeks, Aries. To be in maximum alignment with cosmic rhythms, you should seek input from allies who'll offer insights about you that are outside your current conceptions of yourself. You might even be daring enough to place yourself in the paths of strangers, acquaintances, animals and teachers who can provide novel reflections. There's just one caveat: Stay away from people who might be inclined to fling negative feedback. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): Constantine P. Cavafy's poem "Waiting for the Barbarians" imagines the imminent arrival of an unpredictable agent of chaos. "The barbarians are coming today," declares the narrator. Everyone in town is uneasy. People's routines are in disarray. Faces look worried. What's going to happen? But the poem has a surprise ending. "It is night, and the barbarians haven't come," reports the narrator. "Some people have arrived from the frontier and say that there aren't any more barbarians." I propose that we use this scene as a metaphor for your life right now, Taurus. It's quite possible that the perceived threat isn't really a threat. So here's my question, taken from near the end of the poem—"What are we going to do now without the barbarians?" GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): Some folklorists prefer the term "wonder tales" rather than "fairy tales." Indeed, many such stories are filled with marvelous events that feature magical transformations, talking animals and mythical creatures like elves and dragons and unicorns. I bring this up, Gemini, because I want to encourage you to read some wonder tales. Hopefully, as you do, you'll be inspired to re-imagine your life as a wonder tale; you'll reframe the events of the "real world" around you as being elements in a richly entertaining wonder tale. Why do I recommend this? Because wonder tales are like waking dreams that reveal the wishes and curiosities and fascinations of your deep psyche. And I think you will benefit profoundly in the coming weeks from consciously tuning in to those wishes and curiosities and fascinations. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): I suspect that in the coming days you'll be able to see into everyone's souls more vividly than usual. You'll have a special talent for piercing through the outer trappings of their personalities so as to gaze at the essence beneath. It's as if your eyes will be blessed by an enhancement that enables you to discern what's often hidden. This upgrade in your perception may at times be unsettling. For some of the people you behold, the difference between how they present themselves and who they actually 050 5

are will be dramatic. But for the most part, penetrating to the depths should be fun, enriching, even healing.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): "This heart is
rusty," writes poet Gabriel Gadfly. "It creaks, it clanks, it crashes and rattles and bangs." Why is his heart in such a state? Because he has been separated from a person he loves. And so he's out of practice in doing the little things, the caring gestures and tender words, that a lover does to keep the heart well-oiled. It's my observation that most of us go through rusty-heart phases like this even when we are living in close proximity to an intimate ally. We neglect to practice the art of bestowing affectionate attention and low-key adoration. We forget how important it is for our own welfare that we continually refresh and reinvigorate our heart intelligence. These are good meditations for you right now, Leo.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): "All the effort in the world won't matter if you're not inspired," writes novelist Chuck Palahniuk. I agree! And that's a key meditation for you right now. Your assignment is to enhance and upgrade the inspiration you feel about the activities that are most important to you—the work and the play that give you the sense you're living a meaningful life. So how do you boost your excitement and motivation for those essential actions you do on a regular basis? Here's a good place to begin—visualize in exuberant detail all the reasons you started doing them in the first place. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): I hope you are embarking on a vigorous new phase of self-redefinition. I trust you are excited about shedding old ways of thinking about yourself and eager to revise and re-imagine the plot of your life story. As you do, keep in mind this helpful counsel from physicist Richard Feynman—"You have no responsibility to live up to what other people think you ought to accomplish. I have no responsibility to be like they expect me to be. It's their mistake, not my failing." SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): You've probably heard the saying, "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration." It's often attributed to inventor Thomas Edison. Sixteenth-century artist Michelangelo expressed a similar idea. "If you knew how much labor went into it, you would not call it genius," he said about one of his masterpieces. I'm guessing that you Scorpios have been in a phase when these descriptions are highly apropos. The work you've been doing may look productive and interesting and heroic to the casual observer, and maybe only you know how arduous and exacting it has been. So now what do you do? I say it's time to enjoy the fruits of your efforts. Celebrate! Give yourself a thrilling gift. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21):
"The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you," declared astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. If that's even a little bit true, I bet you won't believe it in the
coming weeks. According to my analysis, the universe will make a great deal of sense to you—at times even exquisite, beautiful, breathtaking sense. Life will be in a revelatory and articulate mood. The evocative clues coming your way about the nature of reality could tempt you to believe that there is indeed a coherent plan and meaning to your personal destiny.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): In
2005, Facebook was a start-up company barely on the map of the internet. Its president asked graffiti artist David Choe to paint murals on the walls of its headquarters. Choe asked for $60,000, but the president convinced him to be paid with Facebook stock instead. Years later, when Facebook went public, Choe became a multi-millionaire. I suspect that in the coming months you will be faced with choices that are less spectacular than that, Capricorn, but similar and important. My conclusion: Be willing to consider smart gambles when projects are germinating.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): "Experiment is the sole source of truth," wrote philosopher and polymath Henri Poincaré. "It alone can teach us something new; it alone can give us certainty." He wasn't merely referring to the kinds of experiments that scientists conduct in laboratories. He was talking about the probes and explorations we can and should carry out in the course of our daily lives. I mention this, Aquarius, because the coming days will be prime time for you to do just that—ask provocative questions, initiate novel adventures, and incite fun learning experiences. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): In my opinion, Piscean singer, poet and actor Saul Williams produces high-quality art. So he has earned a right to critique mediocre art. In speaking about movies and TV shows that are hard to enjoy unless we dumb ourselves down, he says that "we have more guilty pleasure than actual f——— pleasure." Your assignment in the coming weeks, Pisces, is to cut back on your "guilty pleasures"—the entertainment, art, and socializing that brings meager returns—as you increase and upgrade your actual f——— pleasure. news of the weird PEOPLE WITH ISSUES There's so much to unpack about Sexy Vegan, a 37-yearold from West Hollywood, California, that we scarcely know where to begin. His real name is Hansel DeBartolo III. After changing his name in 2016, he had the new handle tattooed on his forehead and chest. He's an "Instagram sensation" and a 2020 presidential candidate, according to his IMDb profile. But most recently, Vegan's been a resident of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, reported the Los Angeles Times, following his arrest Sept. 26 on charges of sexual abuse of his dog, which authorities say he captured on video and posted on social media. "I do get judged a lot for being different," Vegan told Dr. Phil in 2017. THE CONTINUING CRISIS At New Lynn's Peaches and Cream, a sex toy shop in suburban Auckland, New Zealand, staffer Kat Maher immediately noticed a strange customer on Sept. 23. "He was very energetic and erratic, going around the shop, talking a lot," she told Stuff. Strangely, he also closely resembled Elvis Presley, with slicked-back black hair and sunglasses, although he was wearing a high-visibility orange vest. "He brought a sex toy called 'Like a Virgin' up to the counter, but his card declined," Maher said. When the purchase didn't go through, the man grabbed the "fake vagina" toy, worth about $60, and ran out of the store. Maher reported the theft to police, but fake Elvis has not been apprehended. She also noted that the shop gets robbed about once a week: "It's really frustrating when this sort of thing happens. So rude and it ruins your day." RECURRING THEMES Sunday morning shoppers in central Auckland, New Zealand, got more than an eyeful on Sept. 29 when for several hours, pornography was broadcast on a large outdoor video screen at the Asics sportswear store. The "totally inappropriate and offensive" scenes apparently continued for about nine hours— until staff arrived at the store around 10 a.m. and turned the screen off, the New Zealand Herald reported. "Some people were shocked, but others just stopped and watched," said security guard Dwayne Hinango. The store manager, who gave only "John" as his name, said the incident stemmed from a cybersecurity breach, and Asics apologized on its website and through email to its customers. •And in Auburn Hills, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, motorists along an interstate got a free show late on Sept. 28 after two people broke into a small building connected to an electronic billboard and uploaded pornography to the sign. Auburn Hills police told WDIV that two hooded young men were captured on surveillance video

entering the structure at 10:49 p.m. and staying about 15 minutes. Police started getting reports of the images around 11 p.m. "I was just looking up at it and I was like, 'Huh, oh, wow. That's porn,'" said driver Chuck McMahon. Police are still looking for the hackers. UNCLEAR ON THE CONCEPT Lee Dongjin, the mayor of Jindo county in South Korea, wanted to make International Coastal Cleanup Day special for his community. So on Sept. 20, the day before the global event, he instructed crews to transport more than a ton of trash that had already been collected from coastlines and deposit it on a pristine beach in Jindo, according to Agence-France Press. "We brought in waste Styrofoam and other coastal trash gathered from nearby areas so the 600 participants could carry out clean-up activities," Lee said. He apologized for deceiving the volunteers and assured residents that there was no "secondary pollution." NEWS THAT SOUNDS LIKE A JOKE The Hudson Regional Health Commission in New Jersey is investigating a mystery odor, according to WABC. People in Jersey City and Bayonne complained about the smell on Sept. 24, and officials, following the wind, searched in Newark but couldn't identify the source of the odor, which some described as similar to rotting fish. "Being a peninsula, we have water on three sides and sometimes at low tide you can smell the bay," explained Edoardo Ferrante, coordinator at the Office of Emergency Management. "It was really nothing like that. It was a very nasty, almost like a foul meat type of smell." The HRHC is continuing to investigate the odor. FAMILY VALUES Bozhena Synychka, 20, and Volodymyr Zaitsev, 25, just got "tired of looking after" their toddler boys, Andrey, 3, and Maksim, 2. So in mid-August, they dropped the boys off at a homeless encampment in Zaporizhia, Ukraine—and didn't come back. The naked toddlers were watched over by men at the camp for a week as they drank from a river and foraged through trash for food, until passerby Olena Tashevska spotted them on Aug. 26 and called police, reported the Daily Mail. A pediatrician who examined them at the hospital said they suffered from viral infections and malnutrition. "They are weak now and barely can walk," Dr. Taisa Klimenko told local media. Police are pursuing criminal charges against the parents, and the boys are living in an orphanage in the meantime. {in}
