PENSACOLA YACHT CLUB One of the

oldest yacht clubs on the Gulf Coast hosted the first major, fully-permitted sailboat race to Havana, Cuba since diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba ceased over 50 years ago. The regatta, which included 24 vessels ranging from high-tech performance multihulls to classic cruisers, placed Pensacola in the international spotlight.

VISION 2015 In 2010, the Greater Pensacola Chamber launched the job creation initiative to reboot economic development in Escambia County. The campaign focused on recruiting new businesses, helping local businesses expand and strengthening the public-private partnerships. The results have been amazing—8,962 new jobs, average salary of $53,898.

GENE VALENTINO Former Escambia

County Commissioner Gene Valentino tried to get the Board of County Commissioners to pay the $28,000 legal tab for his fight with the contractor for his home. In 2012, he filed a complaint against the contractor with the county's Contractor Competency Board alleging shoddy work and failure to pay subcontractors. The complaint was eventually dismissed after three years of legal wrangling. The BCC declined to pay Valentino’s bills.

NORTHWEST FLORIDA WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT The State Auditor

General in September issued a report that pointed out several operational issues with the Northwest Florida Water Management District, which manages the water resources for Escambia, Santa Rosa and other panhandle counties. The duties of permit fee collection and recordkeeping were insufficiently separated.

The district acted against state law by paying a bonus to an employee after services had been rendered and had established a bonus program without obtaining approval from its governing board.

CITY OF DESTIN Destin City Councilwoman

Prebble Ramswell and City Manager Greg Gisela are being investigated for “irregularities in the city credit card” use. Originally, Gisela asked the State Attorney’s Office to review the councilwoman’s use of a city credit card for a personal trip. Then a public record request turned up a check written by Kisela to reimburse the city for baseball tickets he bought using his own municipal credit card. Now the State Attorney’s Office is reviewing all city credit cards.

THE IMPORTANCE OF VISION In November 2010, Bentina Terry, who was, at the time, the vice president of external affairs and corporate services for the Gulf Power Company, visited the Inweekly offices with Reed Benson, project director for the Atlanta-based National Community Development Services.

They came to discuss Vision 2015, a new Pensacola Chamber of Commerce initiative to revitalize the area’s economic development efforts, truly making it a public-private partnership. The goal was to raise $6.5 million over the next five years and add 3,000 new jobs to the Pensacola Bay Area.

“Those jobs mean $77.1 million in new bank deposits and $11 million in additional groceries bought each year,” said Terry. “They mean people buy $18 million in new homes and spend $5 million to furnish them. And they mean an additional $149 million in consumer spending and $5.3 million in additional sales.”

Gulf Power, Sacred Heart, Lewis Bear Company and Sandy Sansing were some of the first companies to invest in Vision 2015.

The Escambia Board of County Commissioners and Pensacola City Council also joined the campaign that focused on recruiting new businesses, helping local businesses expand and strengthening the public-private partnerships in the Pensacola region.

Five years after Terry’s visit, the Chamber celebrated the phenomenal success of its

Vision 2015. The job-creation effort nearly tripled its goal, creating 8,962 new jobs with an average salary of $53,898. Our unemployment rate dropped from 10.5 percent in 2010 to 5.0 percent in 2015.

At the Vision 2015 celebration, Clay Ingram, Greater Pensacola Chamber President & CEO, said, “Vision 2015 served as a catalyst to stimulate existing business growth, improve the available workforce and spearhead community improvements.”

Ingram was correct, but Vision 2015 was much more than that. Our community was trying to come out an economic recession.

We were battling the aftermath of the BP oil spill and needed to show a unified front on recruiting employers to our area.

Vision 2015 proved that we could place personal agendas aside and work together for the good of the entire community. The city, county and business community could join forces and reignite our economy.

A host of people and organizations deserve the credit for the Vision 2015 success because it took a truly a team effort. Governor Rick Scott’s emphasis on job creation helped tremendously, as did having Don Gaetz, RNiceville, as the Florida Senate president for two of those years.

TELLING: PENSACOLA After a successful production in the Tampa Bay area this past spring, the Florida Humanities Council brought the project to Pensacola giving local veterans the chance to share their experiences.

“It’s a whole population that needs to be listened to and respected as human beings and figure out ways to support them,” said Lisa Powers, director of “Telling: Pensacola.”

With a background in theatre and drama therapy, The Telling Project is a perfect fit for Powers. Her role as the director is to help the veterans feel confident and “support them theatrically.”

“They couldn’t make a better project for me,” she said.

Powers herself has no background in the military — “no connection, no exposure.”

In the spring, she worked on “Telling: Tampa Bay,” which was also turned into a documentary that will premiere on PBS-affiliate stations in Florida.

At “Telling: Tampa Bay,” Powers witnessed veterans from the audience approach the cast and share their own stories and experiences.

That’s why these veterans signed up for The Telling Project. They still want to serve by letting others know it’s OK to talk.

“Mental health is one issue that is still not dealt with,” said Debra Russell, a Navy veteran who served from 1984 to 1997.

“There’s that stigma, and yet you can only take in so much before you explode.”

“You don’t know who the damn enemy is. They would shake your hand one minute and put a bullet in your back the next.”

By Jennifer Leigh Inside Pensacola Little Theatre recently a group of near-strangers sit down in a circle.

It’s evening, but they’re pouring cups of coffee into mismatching mugs.

They only just met, but they’re talking about hopes and fears, losing faith and gaining strength. Some of these thoughts they have never even said out loud.

Without any acting experience, they’ll take their stories to the stage. And we will listen.

“I’m taking power back and reclaiming my story,” said Timothy Jones, a Navy veteran who served from 1998 to 2000. “This project gives us the opportunity to heal. We all have something to say.”

PREPARING TO TELL

Since 2008, The Telling Project has helped bridge the communication gap between military veterans and American society.

Based in Austin, Texas, it has created a chain reaction of 27 original performances in 16 different states. And now, it’s made its way to Pensacola.

“It’s about personalizing experiences that otherwise seem so distant to the vast majority of Americans,” said Max Rayneard, co-creator of The Telling Project. “A way to think about it is this: only 1 percent of Americans have served in post-9/11 conflicts, which means that, perhaps more than any prior generation, contemporary veterans are isolated.”

“Our mission is to tell the stories of Florida with programs that go back to the original people of Florida to the current stories,” said Barbara O’Reilly, communications director for Florida Humanities Council.

Around 20 veterans answered the call from FHC to be interviewed for “Telling: Pensacola.” From there, it was narrowed down to six individuals. In August, each one sat down with Rayneard for an in-depth interview, and a script was written to weave the diverse experiences into one production.

“Everyone who sat down spoke with generosity and candor,” said Rayneard. “The stories are funny, poignant, and yes, painful.

But overwhelmingly, the veterans amazed me with the clear-sighted strength with which they understand their experiences. Chances are, people will not have heard stories like these before.”

LISTEN AND RESPECT

The stories shared by the Pensacola veterans run the gamut from PTSD, to alcohol abuse, to rape and overall loss.

Scott Satterwhite, who served in the Navy and Marine Corps from 1990 to 1999, said the “Telling: Pensacola” cast is a good representation of what the military is like.

“Not every experience is an action film, and a lot of the things that happened to us aren’t the things anyone would put on a recruiting poster,” he said. “I think it’s good for our community to actually hear what vets say about what it’s like to be in the military.”

While these experiences stem from military service, you don’t have to be a veteran to take something away from it. In fact, the less you know about the military, the more enlightened you may become.

THE PRICE OF SERVING

Each of the veterans signed their lives away for a different reason — a sense of patriotic pride, to have a career or wanting to defend a war. What they all got in return was a sense of disillusionment.

Elliott James served in the Army from 2004 to 2006, and he likely crossed paths with another cast member, Tabitha Nichols, who served from 2003 to 2011.

“I was pro-everything, I wanted to protect America…it was a sense of duty,” he said.

When the Vietnam vets got home, they were spit on,” James said. “That’s still taking place today. You want to get spit on? Walk with a vet inside the nearest VA hospital.”

When Nichols signed up, she was just 17. “I thought I was a badass,” she said.

The daughter of an ex-Marine, she had hoped to join the military and retire by 37.

But in 2005, during a tour in Iraq, she was injured by an RPG attack, which fractured her ribs, two cervical vertebrae and two lumbar vertebrae. Ten years later, she’s still in pain.

When she was honorably discharged, she was lost. At 24, while her peers were making their way in the work force, she was starting from scratch.

“I was just a kid,” she said. “I didn’t know shit about the world.”

It’s been nearly 50 years since Patrick McCrary dropped out of high school and signed up for the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War as a “testosterone-filled teenager.” Hearing stories from some of the cast has taught him that little has changed over the years, he said.

“I know what those kids are going through,” he added. “You don’t know who the damn enemy is. They would shake your hand one minute and put a bullet in your back the next.”

Witnessing war is not something you can be mentally prepared for, McCrary said.

“What man can do to man…the eyes see it, but the brain can’t quite process it,” he said.

James did one tour in Iraq where he manned a machine gun convoy. He also did checkpoint duty where one night he was run over by an equipment truck causing him to lose his right leg below the knee. He came back home with a different perspective about duty.

“You’re willing to send somebody off to war and not take responsibility for that war?

said of signing up for the military as a teenager. At the beginning of his service, he was a self-described “Reagan Youth.” When he left, he was a different person.

“Those people who are sent into harm’s way have hopes and dreams and are young.

Even the service members who didn’t see war don’t walk away unscathed.

For years, Russell had kept the sexual trauma she faced in the Navy a secret. She thought no one would believe she had been raped.

“It’s very hard for me to talk about it,” she said. “I felt they would say ‘Oh, you know you wanted it.’ They can tell everybody and make them think you did it…the people that tell they made to feel so shamed.”

“Telling: Pensacola” will be the first time Russell publicly speaks about the abuse she suffered 20 years ago.

“I used to think I had the greatest job in the world…” she said.

On Sunday, Nov. 8, right before the last performance of “Telling: Pensacola”, James will race in the Pensacola Marathon, wearing his prosthetic leg in honor of veterans.

He rarely misses an opportunity to make a statement.

“Maybe I can have an effect,” he said.

“What’s happened to me is probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Like Russell, there was also that stigma, not to mention lack of adequate help.

“It was a rough transition back into civilian life,” he said. “I was abusing drugs and alcohol until I recently got my life back on track.”

Jones has a heart for homeless vets and recently completed a 203-mile walk raising awareness for the forgotten population.

“There are homeless vets at the park right now, but no one’s talking about that except for the fact that they’re an eyesore for the city,” he said.

Jones isn’t the only one advocating.

‘A NEW FAMILY’

It didn’t take long for the cast of “Telling: Pensacola to form a bond.

“It’s amazing that we came together from such a broad spectrum, but yet we’re so similar,” said Jones. “It’s a new family.”

Having the opportunity to connect with other veterans has been an added benefit behind the project.

“There’s a certain language, really, that’s unique to veterans,” said Satterwhite. “…It’s been great to have the opportunity to be in a room full of vets and feel a camaraderie that I didn’t even know I missed.”

What the cast hopes the audience gleans from the project is an honest look into military service.

“Most military stories are all sugar coated,” Russell said. “I don’t think any of us got a parade when we came home.”

CARSON PRESCRIBES CHILL PILL

They came to see the doctor, the man with the soothing bedside manor and a voice like smooth jazz strained through molasses. They came to see retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, the outsider candidate currently leading the Republican primary pack in national polls.

“I just like the fact that he’s so laid back,” said Melynda Corley.

Corley was first in line Nov. 1 at Booksa-Million in Pensacola to catch Carson’s book tour on its swing through the Panhandle. She arrived hours before the store opened to wait in the rain.

“I just wanted to make sure I had a chance to meet him,” Corley said from her spot at the front of the line. “I just love where he came from and what he believes in.”

Waiting behind Corley, snaking through the store, lining the aisles, laying on the floor, lounging in lawn chairs and thumbing through copies of Carson’s “A More Perfect Union”, many hundreds more awaited their chance to meet the candidate. By the time Carson arrived for the afternoon book signing, a couple of thousand people filled the store.

“It’s been hectic,” said Donna Raimondi, co-manager of the Books-a-Million.

“But a pleasant type of hectic, know what I mean?”

Carson’s Pensacola visit comes at a frenzied time for his campaign, with the doctor recently crowned as front-runner after edging past the domineering and thus-far-dominating Donald Trump in the polls. But the visit wasn’t an official campaign stop, it was a book tour. The candidate spends an hour and a half hustling people through a line to sign their copies of his book. Then does it again in Panama City.

And again in Tallahassee.

“One of the stores did 2,000 books that he signed in an hour and a half — you’ve got to remember he’s a doctor,” laughed Raimondi.

But it sure smelled like a campaign event with the stickers and the Super PAC schwag and the media circus.

“T-shirts are 20 bucks, hats are 25!,” Marty Miller called out from his vending table positioned by the store’s front doors.

“We take credit cards!”

Though not affiliated with the candidate’s organization, Miller’s been slinging Carson campaign fare all along the trail.

Places like Iowa and Texas and Tennessee.

“You know, my campaign is not about me, it’s about ‘we,’ ‘we the people,’ and it’s time to put the people and what is good for them back at the forefront.” Ben Carson

“We travel all over the country with him,” Miller explained. “They tell us where they’re going. They love us.”

Before jumping on Carson’s tour, the vendor was on the Ted Cruz circuit doing the same. But this is different.

“I asked to do Ben,” Miller said, explaining that he felt a connection with the candidate.

Spread out across Miller’s table are shirts and hats, lots of pink for the ladies, and buttons with catchisms: ‘The Doctor Is In, The White House,’ ‘Legalize the Constitution,’ ‘Annoy a Liberal. Work Hard, Be Happy.’

Such sentiments are echoed by the folks waiting inside the Booksa-Million. So is another one: “He’s a Christian.”

“Some of its just deep in here,” said Kim Diemer, lamenting how society has “really gone down hill.”

Diemer and her husband Scott are volunteers with Carson’s Super PAC, 2016 Committee. The Fort Walton residents first heard of the candidate after his appearance at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast.

“That started getting pushed around in the spring of this year,” said Scott, explaining that they jumped on board soon after seeing the Prayer Breakfast footage.

“Some of us haven’t felt like this since Reagan.”

Also topping his list of reasons why he’s attracted to Carson is the fact that the doctor is not a politician. He’s an outsider — “I want somebody that’s not a politician” — and perhaps more palatable than Trump, with whom he shares some common policy ground.

“But with Trump you get this crass, inyour-face demagoguery that we’ve seen,” Scott said. “Ben is soft spoken, where Trump is very loud.”

After logging some time signing books, Carson took a few minutes to speak with the media during his Pensacola stop. It was the moment the candidate’s visit veered undeniably off the book circuit and onto the campaign trail.

In his trademark calming tone, Carson answered questions about his displeasure with the GOP debates, his thoughts about concerns of racism in Alabama’s voting process and his recent record-breaking fundraising numbers.

“Look around you,” Carson said, referencing the large crowd filling the bookstore and noting that his supporters have made more than 800,000 individual contributions to his campaign.

“You know, my campaign is not about me,” Carson smiled, “it’s about ‘we,’ ‘we the people,’ and it’s time to put the people and what is good for them back at the forefront.”

RESURRECTING REGISTRY In the

weeks before the 2014 general election, Mayor Ashton Hayward announced he wanted to establish a lobbyist registry.

In his “Upwords” newsletter, the mayor said, ““Anyone who is paid to speak at city council meetings or who seeks a meeting with a city official to lobby on behalf of another individual, organization or interest group should be required to register as a lobbyist. As part of that process, lobbyists should be required to disclose the clients they represent, as well as the subject matters they seek to influence, and citizens should have access to that information.”

Then nothing happened for five months.

On March 12, 2015, Mayor Hayward presented the council an ordinance. In his memo to council, he wrote that the lobbyist registry would prohibit lobbyists from knowingly making false statements when lobbying.

“Adopting such a program would ensure greater transparency and provide citizens, as well as the mayor and city council members, with more information throughout the decisionmaking process,” said Hayward.

However, during the agenda review session, council president Andy Terhaar moved the item to a special meeting on March 26. Then the ordinance later was pulled from that agenda and disappeared.

Councilwoman Sherri Myers wants the lobbyist registry ordinance added to the Nov. 12 agenda.

“Many cities and counties in the state of Florida have lobby registries. I see no reason why Pensacola should not have one. I think that it gives us more transparency and accountability in government to know what money is behind influencing the government,” said Myers on New Talk 1370 WCOA. She added, “This is just the first step in a series of things that we need to address in order to have more transparency and accountability in government.”

Myers said she would like the city council to consider an independent ethics officer, similar to one for the city of Tallahassee.

“I've been reading the anti-corruption act in Tallahassee,” said Myers, “and I think that we need to revise and expand our ethics ordinance.”{in}

FAMILY

From World War II on, Northwest Florida has benefitted broadly from the generosity and leadership of Jack Kugelman and his family. A 3rd generation Pensacola native, Jack was the son of Edgar, a native himself, and grandson of David, a nephew of Henrietta Kugelman Bear who came to Pensacola in the 1890s.

Jack’s parents, Edgar and Sylvia, moved the family to Jacksonville and found success in liquor distribution.

At Dartmouth College, Jack joined the V-12 Navy College Training Program and served in the South Pacific during World War II. By the war’s end in 1945, Standard Distributing Company expanded, and Jack was Ensign Jack Kugelman chosen to head the Pensacola unit. during World War II

Building A Legacy of Giving Back With increasing success, Jack’s parents established The Kugelman Foundation in Jacksonville and began making contributions to Pensacola agencies of compassion.

Jack married Jane Sabel, and the pair had four daughters (Marcy, Jackie, Nancy and Janet). The couple became active in the community, serving with a multitude of civic organizations and receiving numerous awards for their devoted service and philanthropy. When Edgar Kugelman passed way, Jack took over Standard Distributing, and he and Jane became directors of The Kugelman Foundation. In the 1990s, Jack sold the business and dedicated his time to running the foundation.

Devoted to Community and Family With Jack at the helm, The Kugelman Foundation supported local organizations and established the Kugelman Telecommunications Center at PJC, the Kugelman Honors Program at UWF, and the Kugelman Cancer Center at Baptist Hospital. But nothing kept him from Jane and the girls. He often worked while they slept so he could spend mornings with them, and he was home for dinner every evening. Today, the Kugelman daughters— Marcy Cameron Kugelman, Jackie Kugelman, Nancy McSweeney and Janet Livingston—and their families carry on the legacy of doing good and giving back. Jack passed away in 2006, and his beloved Jane, now 88, is surrounded by the extended families of the couple’s four daughters and eight grandchildren.

It was Pensacola’s good fortune that the first generation of Kugelmans settled here and that Jack and Jane planted such deep roots when they returned, producing lasting benefits themselves and making it possible for future generations to continue making a difference.

Foo Foo Fest. You know what that means—fall is finally here.

And just in case you’re still unfamiliar with that last one, please allow us to introduce you to your new favorite fall tradition. Now in its second year, Foo Foo Fest is a 12-day celebration dedicated to existing and new cultural events and creative happenings throughout the city. Basically, it’s everything you’ve ever loved about fall in Pensacola, like the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival, plus tons of new events, like Popera in the Park, happening around the same time to encourage locals and tourists alike to take in as much culture as possible.

Some area arts and cultural organizations received grant money from Art, Culture and Entertainment, Inc. (ACE) to help make their events possible and lower the cost for attendees.

Cover art by Alfons Mucha for "La Plume" To ask Dr. Patrick Rowe to pick his favorite work by Czech Art Nouveau painter and decorative graphic artist Alphonse Mucha is like asking him to pick between precious gems.

“It’s like Sophie’s choice,” he chuckled.

Rowe, with 122 pieces, has one of the largest personal collections of Mucha in the country, many of which are currently being shown at the Pensacola Museum of Art (PMA) as part of the “Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau” exhibit.

Rowe has lived and worked in Pensacola since 1983, teaching at PSC and UWF, and spending his summers in Italy teaching for FSU and co-directing an excavation south of Florence. In 2002, he stopped excavating in order to focus on putting together shows of his growing art collection.

Rowe began working on his Mucha show in 1999 and lending it to various museums shortly after. The current show 212 1

at the PMA is special because on top of Rowe’s private collection, thanks to a grant from Foo Foo Fest, the museum was able to bring in pieces from the private collection of Jack Rennert in New York, as well as the Tampa Museum of Art and the Boca Raton Museum. Rowe partnered with the museums to create an entire Mucha experience that truly captures the trajectory of the artist’s career, as well as his relationships with contemporaries and influencers.

Mucha, now known as one of the major forerunners in the Art Nouveau period in Paris, was a fascinating man, and his work is imbued with a certain whimsy that is hard to dislike. While he started his career in the commercial arena, working on everything from magazine illustrations and advertisements to posters, menus, and post cards, his work is now considered to be fine art.

Beliech participated in her first craft show when she was 18 and has been in about a dozen throughout the years. In 2005, she had the opportunity to go back to school and attend Pensacola State College, earning degrees in Graphic Design and Art. “I worked as a corporate graphic designer for years and won awards for my work, but my passion was always working with my hands, creating beautiful objects from raw materials,” she said.

In 2013, Beliech said that she went through a corporate downsizing and ended up re-evaluating what she wanted to do with her life.

“I left Pensacola for over a year pursuing other jobs, but then I decided to see if I could live off of what I could earn from my art and my needlework,” she said.

“I returned to Pensacola to sell off my remaining belongings and learned about the studio rental program at First City Art Center. I applied and was accepted, so I spend most of my time in my studio at the Art Center, creating new pieces and meeting new people. It hasn’t always been easy financially, but I’m so much happier and more fulfilled with the life I lead now.”

After attending last year’s GGAF, Beliech said that she noticed the tatting artist was absent from Heritage Row, so she decided to enter the festival.

The Pensacola MESS (that’s Math, Engineering, Science & Stuff) Hall is taking science to the streets.

As part of the 12-day Foo Foo festivities, the educational program will have an interactive science experience available 24-hours a day along the streets of downtown Pensacola.

Festival goers can learn while they partake in the Planet Walk, a pathway that explains a sense of scale of the solar system and other planets.

You can even learn more about the science behind optical illusions, perception and balance.

The exhibits aren’t just for kids. Friends and families can work together on group exhibits such as a musical bench.

The Pensacola MESS Hall was founded in 2012 and allows kids to get hands-on experiences. With a rotating number of projects, kids can tinker and experiment just like a real scientist.

Although Foo Foo Fest is hosting a diverse group of events dealing with theatre, film and arts, one event in particular hopes to start a conversation about environmental stewardship and how climate change is affecting the planet.

The first-ever Clean Energy Fest, hosted by 350 Pensacola, will celebrate a clean energy future through art, food and live music in the heart of East Hill.

The festival is the brainchild of Elaine Sargent, the founder of 350 Pensacola, who is an artist herself and thought that area artists could help the public visualize what a Clean Energy Future might look like to spark conversations through the medium of art.

“350 Pensacola is a part of an international campaign that’s building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis—the solutions that science and justice demand,” said the group’s Education Co-Director Susan Feathers. “350 is the number of parts per million CO2 that scientists note as a safe level for healthy functioning of Earth's ecosystems. We are now over 400 ppm. The transition to clean forms of energy, such as wind and solar power, is vital to maintaining a healthy planet.”

“It’s America’s original art form,” said Crystal Joy, Vice President of the Jazz Society of Pensacola and music director for the annual Pensacola JazzFest. “It reaches out to so many different generations.”

The events may all hone in on the word jazz, but each night offers something different.

The first event is All that Jazz with Trombonist Harry Watters. Watters is an educator 414 1

Feathers said that 350 Pensacola began when a group of citizens concerned about climate change and environmental issues met over their shared concerns for responsibility to help bring change.

“350 Pensacola hosts and organizes community events, such as Moving Planet Pensacola, Climate Impacts Day, the annual Cool the Panhandle Funky Bike Fest, and Hands Across the Sand,” Feathers said. “We have committees that work on specific issues, and we host monthly lectures and discussions on many topics related to climate change and sustainable communities.”

Feathers said that artists, architects and designers were invited to submit art and design concepts related to clean energy, to a direction for future community design, or to feature current examples of clean energy design in our area.

The Future of Energy juried art competition will feature works by local artists in all genres to give artistic expression to the many benefits of a clean energy future. Judges for the competition will include artists and designers from the Gulf Coast art community, university faculty, and clean energy specialists.

The Virginia-based musician will perform at the Saenger Theatre with the Pensacola Civic Band, as well as host a clinic for students at Pensacola State College Nov. 13.

The next two nights are also about giving back to the community with Jazz for Justice and The Janet Knowles Memorial Jazz Gumbo.

Now in its 19th year, the Jazz for Justice event has raised more than half a million dollars for Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF), which offers legal services to those whose incomes fall below 125 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

“It’s one of our biggest fundraising events,” said Melissa West, spokesperson for LSNF. This year’s Jazz for Justice lineup includes national acts, as well as the UWF Jazz Combo.

“We’re excited to have them,” West said.

“The performers are from all over, and the audience spans a lot of generations.”

A special dance performance of Team Green World’s ‘Lean Green Dancing Machine’ will be choreographed by Eleanor Johnson and will feature children from the Milk and Honey Outreach Ministries, as well as other children from the community. There will also be an exhibit of art by middle and high school artists from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. A “Make and Take” area will engage children in crafts relating to wind, solar and other forms of clean energy.

“We love being part of Foo Foo, because it creates a new medium for us— art—to help showcase a cleaner, healthier and better future for our community,” Feathers said. “All of the visual art and nearly all of the musical acts are local or regional, and people will be delighted to see the amount of talent we have here.” {in}

“It’s a good opportunity for people to listen to New Orleans music without having to take a trip,” Joy said.

Kevin Clark, trumpet player and band leader for the Dukes of Dixieland, said NOLA jazz often incorporates early rhythm and blues. What sets the Dukes apart is their fast pace. The band plays nightly in New Orleans and has their sets down to a science.

“There’s not a lot of downtime between the songs,” he said. “It’s not a history lesson.

It takes a lot of hard work being in a town where a lot of people do what we do.”

Clark said he’s excited to return to Pensacola where the audience has been supportive.

“That’s my favorite part about performing — when the band’s hitting on all cylinders and the audience can feel the energy,” he said. “There’s no experience like that.”

With the turn of the 21st century came a business and cultural renaissance and an economic resurgence. While many businesses have come and gone, others have remained steadfast to welcome the newest ones to the neighborhood, including Blue Dot, The Dwarf, The Elks, Benboe Funeral Home and Joe Morris & Son Funeral Homes.

“Cultural heritage is a powerful force,” said Kim Jennings of Truth for Youth.

“It is important to highlight that cultural significance in order to create a greater awareness of its celebration of life and how that celebration is lived out through the creativity of a culture, every day.”

This is the second year that Truth for Youth, which provides educational, recreational and social development programs for at-risk youth in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, will serve as both participating organization and festival host to the event, while the Belmont-DeVilliers Neighborhood Association will act as co-host.

“Neighborhoods, like people, take on the character, personality and identity of the foundation in which it was established,” Jennings said. “The Belmont-DeVilliers neighborhood is no different. The Back on the Blocks Festival was missioned to recapture the unique richness, personality and character of a neighborhood and community once forgotten.”

The opera is typically performed in grandiose theatres where the audience is decked out in their finest. It’s not typically a free event inside a baseball stadium.

But that’s the beauty behind Popera in the Park: Featuring The “Foo Foo” Three Tenors. It is an event that introduces the beauty behind musical theatre in the same spot you scarf down hot dogs during baseball season.

Popera in the Park piggybacks on the “popera” phenomenon which more recently took the world by storm in th 1990s and early 2000s when opera singers Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciana Pavarotti formed The Three Tenors.

Pensacola Opera Artistic Director Kyle Marrero assembled our own version of The Three Tenors with world-renowned singers Arnold Rawls, Adam Diegal and David Portillo, who will perform a selection of music from well-known operas, Broadway musicals and popular songs inside Blue Wahoos Stadium at Fetterman Field.

Just in time for Foo Foo Fest, the Blues are back.

The team is headed home to Pensacola after a busy season, and is ready to show off their moves at the annual NAS Pensacola Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show. On top of daily shows on Friday and Saturday, the exhibition team will also be doing a nighttime performance, joined by special nighttime aircraft and performers. At the end of the night there will be a grand fireworks display, rumored to be the biggest fireworks display in the Pensacola area of the year.

“The “Foo Foo” Three Tenors are very good friends, as well as good colleagues,” said Rawls. “The three of us bring three completely different things to the stage.

Each of us is a specialist in his repertoire. I think the selection of music is as diverse as the singers performing it.”

Just as the original Three Tenors sang at various FIFA World Cup games, The “Foo Foo” Three Tenors will mix sports and opera. Rawls said the two aren’t actually so different from one another, even though they’re not always regarded in the same way.

“The opera and symphony is very much like American Football, baseball or basketball,” he said. “Opera is a national pasttime over in Europe. I sing a great deal in Europe, and it seems that it is very difficult to obtain a ticket to an opera performance.

They tend to sell out. I think opera being thought of as out-of-reach in America is from the intimidation factor.”

The intimidation can come from an unfamiliar atmosphere or the fear of not un-

derstanding a single word (most operas are in foreign languages), but the barriers have been breaking down. As Rawls pointed out, most opera companies now have translations of the productions scrolling above the stage. And while nothing beats free, Pensacola Opera tickets are affordable starting at $25 for single tickets.

Whether you’re an opera house regular or just curious, The “Foo Foo” Three Tenors is a good representation for the art form and may even spark an interest for the newcomers, which is perfect timing, since the Pensacola Opera 33rd season starts in January 2016 with “La Traviata.”

“This event would be a great ‘first time’ for the newbie opera-curious person,” Rawls said. “All the music is some of the most popular tunes out there for the tenor

On top of the live performances, there will be over 20 static displays, as well as an area for kids with rides and food. If you need a break from the sun between attractions, then head into the Naval Aviation Museum to peruse the exhibits, pose in Marine One, or try your own hand at flying in one of the Blue Angel Simulators.

The City of Pensacola is also joining forces with Naval Air Station Pensacola and the National Naval Aviation Museum to celebrate the Blue Angels homecoming by hosting a weekend hashtag project and “Instameet.” The “Instameet” will be on Saturday at 1 pm, near the general admission area. This gathering will allow Instagram users to exchange photography advice and produce content together to share on their own accounts. They are also encouraging residents to use the hashtag #welcomehomeblues for the entire weekend to show our support. {in}

If you missed the Halloween weekend performances of Ballet Pensacola’s “Headless Horseman,” there’s still time to visit the creepy woods of Sleepy Hollow.

Back after a successful premiere last year, “The Headless Horseman” is bigger than ever.

“Last year we designed it to be a second half of our repertoire,” said Richard Steinert, artistic director of Ballet Pensacola. “Presented with an opportunity from Foo Foo Festival, we’ve been able to develop a full evening.”

Taken from various renditions, Steinert retold the creepy classic with the help of Ballet Mistress Christine Duhon and Production Designer Lance Brannon.

“It’s a triple whammy performance,” he said. “From the costumes, to the set…it’s a spectacle all around.”

New this year is a “spookier” woods, along with mystical woodland creatures.

The full-size horse puppet designed and built by Lance Brannon is back. The creation has almost become a character of its own, Brannon said.

“It was a fun project,” he said. “It’s very gratifying to see it again.”

Steinert said he hopes to see the audience come to the show and appreciate modern ballet.

DI PANNI: Every tour, all year long, we always try to contribute to as many charities as possible.

If you buy the song “Room for All of Us,” all proceeds go to the International Rescue Committee to help relocate refugees in conflict from around the globe.

We are also involved with The Ally Coalition created by the band Fun and designer Rachel Antonoff. We worked with them last year to support LGBTQ causes and to fight discrimination. Any chance we get to utilize a charity, we definitely do.

Most of the seven band members who met in high school all shared a similar vision to make it a mission to use their music as a positive force of good. It may sound cheesy, but The Mowgli’s take love pretty seriously.

Dave Appelbaum, Colin Louis Dieden, Katie Jayne Earl, Josh Hogan, Matthew Di Panni, Spencer Trent and Andy Warren released their first album, “Sound the Drum”, in 2012 and since then have been touring incessantly to spread that message.

Inweekly talked with The Mowgli’s bassist Matthew Di Panni about having six other bandmates and what it’s like working with his best friends.

INWEEKLY: How did The Mowgli’s first start playing together?

DI PANNI: A lot us met each other in high school. Colin and Josh moved to Los Angeles, and we all met each other in this circle of musicians. We started out doing nonstop shows seven days a week. We would play shows until 4 or 5 in the morning and then go straight to our day jobs.

INWEEKLY: A lot of your music is pretty positive and is about spreading love. Do you guys try to convey that message in your music?

DI PANNI: That’s always been something from the get go. We want to make people realize that we are in love with each other and in love with everyone who support us.

Since day one that’s been something we wanted to do. Every time we write a song, it’s about taking care of each other and common themes that people can relate to.

INWEEKLY: Is writing a collaborative effort between everyone?

DI PANNI: The interesting thing in how we write is that we had all the time in the world to write the first record. You always have forever to write your first record. Over the course of two years, we wrote a lot of songs and put them together. The second record was a time constraint. We put together some songs we had all written and had to figure out which ones we wanted to record.

We say that Colin, Josh and Katie are the main songwriters, but everyone contributes as much as they can.

INWEEKLY: You have a lot of band members. Do you ever clash on your preferences in what you want the band to sound like, or do you all pretty much work together?

DI PANNI: Every band will always have differences, but it helps a lot that the other six are my best friends. We are all in this together, and we all have a common goal.

They are my family. We all have off days, but it helps that we genuinely enjoy each other’s company and get along so well.

INWEEKLY: Are you looking forward to your stop in Pensacola?

DI PANNI: We are actually very excited about the show. On our way to Pensacola to play a few years ago, our van broke down in North Carolina. That was the very first time The Mowgli’s ever had to cancel a show due to a situation like that. We are glad to get a chance to come back. {in}

DI PANNI: Everyone in the band has always been very musical.

I want to sing this song like I'm dying.” As presented in the lead single, ‘Something Soon,’ Toledo has the straightforward self-loathing and blatant honesty that made early Bright Eyes albums appealing to a generation tired of having Bono forced upon them. Toledo offers a similar respite for those getting overwhelmed by hazy synths and the current ‘something-wave.’ Car Seat Headrest may pay homage to past generations of indie rock, but their intentions are showing a way forward. “Teens of Style” is out now via Matador Records.

I can already feel the wheels on albums for 2015 slowing just a bit, but that doesn’t mean that I’m running out of things to be excited about.

David Bowie “Blackstar” The legend announced that he will have a new album out on January 8th. The resulting sessions have been described as “an album of long, jazzy jams mixed with the kind of driving beat pioneered by Seventies German bands Can and Kraftwerk." Grimes ‘Flesh without Blood’

Grimes has been working on her highly anticipated follow up to 2012’s “Visions” at a nearly annoying pace. Late last fall, tension built, the world was ready, and she announced that she scrapped the album, because “it sucked.” A few months later, she decided to release the demo ‘REALiTi,’ which really sounded less like a demo and more like a perfected track, and all I could think was, “This is what you’re saying sucks?” A little over a year later, Grimes is ready and ‘Flesh without Blood,’ the first taste of her new album, “Art Angels,” delivers in form and progress. On the surface, Grimes is building on the dark, spacious pop flair which drew fans to her in the first place. However, deeper, there are gaps where she has never traversed, including underlying pop-punk guitar riff s and a considerably more laid back attitude. Using this track and ‘REALiTi’ as guideposts, I think “Art Angels” will be a massive leap forward for Grimes. “Art Angels” is out November 6th via 4AD. {in}

From November 3-7, The Art Gallery (TAG) at the University of West Florida will host the second annual artistic exhibition which represents a feminist perspective in the arts. “Feminist Iconography II” is sponsored by the Women’s Studies Collective, a feminist group which aims to promote women’s studies in the broader community, both on and off campus.

“Feminist Iconography” is the brain child of Erica Miller and Alina Figueroa, both members of the Women’s Studies Collective (WSC) and students at UWF. The idea for the original exhibition came in April 2014 when the Women’s Studies Program at UWF, along with the WSC,

According to a statement written by Miller, the goal of this regional exhibition is to “show experiences and representations of women but also the achievements and aspirations of the feminist movement [by presenting] innovative perspectives of contemporary feminist politics and discourse through exploratory works of art.”

Katherine Romack, a professor in the Department of English at UWF and longtime advocate for the Women’s Studies Program at UWF, said she wanted this event to stay regional and focused on the daily struggles of

DIFFERENCE MAKERS Charity Golf Weekend Raises $170,000 for Local Causes When John Peacock lost his 17-year old son to a car accident, he vowed to make something positive come out of the pain and loss of that tragedy.

That promise is being fulfilled in bigger and bigger ways each year at the Panhandle Charitable Open, which will donate $170,000 to local charities this year.

Now in its 14th year, the Panhandle Charitable Open started as an afternoon golf tournament but has grown to include two days of golf and a sold-out pre-tournament dinner. This year’s “Tee-Off Par-Tee” dinner featured America’s Got Talent finalist Oz Pearlman, who wowed the crowd with card tricks, eerily accurate mind-reading and mentalist demonstrations. Over 200 players competed in the sold out two-day golf tournament at Marcus Pointe Golf Club.

All told, over the course of the weekend, the Panhandle Charitable Open netted $170,000 after expenses, all of which will be donated to local charities over the next few weeks. Peacock, who is active in several civic organizations, attributes the success of the weekend to a generous community, a fun atmosphere and the support of a dedicated cadre of volunteers, including members of the Pensacola Young Professionals.

“We run this organization on an entirely volunteer basis - including a lot of assistance from the members of Pensacola Young Professionals. We donate every penny, after expenses, back to charities that benefit our local community,” said Peacock. “We try to make it a fun weekend - the dinner is casual, we have great entertainment, even the food and golf environment is laid back. So we try to make it a fun, relaxed time where people can enjoy themselves and at the same time contribute to some great causes.”

One of those great causes is the Council on Aging of West Florida, which the Open has supported in previous years.

John Clark, CEO of the Council on Aging, had this to say about the event: “The Panhandle Charitable Open (PCO) has been a lifeline for Council on Aging of West Florida, raising over $154,000 since 2007 in support of the many unfunded and underfunded programs of the Council. Programs such as Meals on Wheels, adult day care, volunteer programs, senior dining sites and much more benefit from PCO,” said Clark.

“Because this support is local; we can also use it to match many of our state and federal grants, resulting in an additional one million dollars coming into our community in support of eldercare programs. John Peacock and the volunteers, donors and sponsors of the PCO, deserve the heartfelt thanks of this community. They put words into action and they are what makes this community such a great place to live, work and play,” Clark continued.

In Georgia (and other states), blood alcohol tests are "voluntary" (to bypass the issue of whether drivers can be forced, or even pressured, to endure a test that ultimately helps to convict them), but the Georgia court has ruled, against custom, that a "consenting" driver might be "too" drunk to appreciate the consent—in which case, the test results would be inadmissible in court. Equally awkwardly, prosecutors would be forced to argue that the drunk driver—too drunk to handle a motor vehicle—was still sober enough to give knowledgeable consent.

Atlanta's WSB-TV reported in October that judges statewide are grappling with the issue.

RECURRING THEMES (RECENT INSTANCES OF FAMILIAR WEIRD BEHAVIORS) Funerals and burials, in the United States and elsewhere, are no longer always so staid. COLLEGE "INCLUSIVENESS" TO THE NEXT LEVEL "Service" animals (mostly guide dogs) are ones that have been specially trained to provide help for people with disabilities, but untrained "comfort" animals are also privileged for those diagnosed with panic attacks or depression. In an October report on college students hoping to keep their pets in no-animal dorms, The New York Times noted that school officials have entertained student requests for the "comfort" of (besides dogs and cats) lizards, potbellied pigs, tarantulas, ferrets, guinea pigs and "sugar gliders" (nocturnal, flying, six-ounce Australian marsupials). Informal Justice Department guidelines rule out only animals that are aggressive or destructive or that trigger other students' allergies.

RAISED RIGHT—OR SNITCH-IN-TRAINING? In September, Audrey McColm, 25, traffic-stopped in Randolph County, Indiana, for driving "erratic(ally)," became the latest parent ratted out by her child. When Mom denied having been drinking, her daughter, 7, blurted out, "Yes, you have, Mom." McColm registered 0.237, had nearly hit another officer's car head-on, and was so hammered that she "urged" a different officer to "shoot her in the head."
