FACE THE PUBLIC Mayor Hayward, it's time for you to hold a press conference. The written statements, YouTube videos and weekly segments on NewsRadio 1620 aren't cutting it.

The journalists in this town have too many questions about your most significant initiatives that have gone unanswered for far too long.

When you ran for office in 2010, you promised an open government. You and your administration would meet face-toface with the citizens to hear and address their concerns. And to your credit, you did for three years, but then you stopped.

From that point, you became the social media and press release communicator. Only reporters and radio personalities that promise to treat you nicely get face-to-face interviews.

Asked one complicated question, and you run from the interviewer.

But your selective exposure to the media hasn't worked out for you lately. Your Wednesday morning interviews on NewsRadio 1620 with Andrew McKay have not gone as planned.

Mayor, it was on McKay's show that we learned you wanted the Confederate monument removed, only to have your staff later devise a way to prevent it from happening. Last week, you called Bruce Beach "toxic," but then you had to admit to the PNJ that you had done no testing to back up your claim.

Though it may be difficult for you to accept, Mayor, press conferences aren't about you. Their purpose is to inform citizens what is happening inside their government. To take the issues away from the sterile, safe environment of written statements and Facebook videos and have exchanges that get to real facts.

The citizens never got to voice their opinions about the final design of the Bayview Community Center that is already $2 million over its original budget. They deserve to have you explain why the final design is the best one and whether they will be allowed to discuss the plan with you before bidding the project.

The citizens need to know why you chose Bruce Beach over the Port of Pensacola for the site of the fish hatchery. If you're not willing to move it to the port, what are your long-term plans for that city enterprise?

The citizens need a more detailed explanation of what is happening with the Corinne Jones Stormwater Pond. What are the issues that have delayed completion more than three years? Why does the eastern pond continue to washout after rainstorms?

Why haven't you closed on the sale of the Blount School property? The Pensacola City Council approved the deal on June 8.

Trump's announcement caused an instant downturn in the local Cuban economy. Reyes said, "All the hotels and Airbnbs were full and flourishing. Now several of my friends say they haven't had a reservation since August."

The American tourism had helped to create a small business economy in Cuba.

He said, "All this stuff that they've built up to get this private market is now just getting killed by this reduction in tourism.

People were visibly improving their lives with the tourism dollars."

By Rick Outzen In June, President Donald Trump announced that he was changing the nation's policies regarding Cuba. His administration would strictly enforce the authorized exemptions that allow travel between the US and Cuba and prohibit commerce with Cuban businesses owned by the military and intelligence services.

The announcement has had a chilling impact on the Cuban small business economy.

"The Trump Administration hasn't really actually implemented much of a change, per se, at all," said Stephen Reyes.

Reyes, a partner in the Saltmarsh, Cleaveland & Gund accounting firm, has visited Cuba several times since travel 66

restrictions were lifted by the Obama Administration. His father is from Cuba.

"But what the president has done has been incredibly impactful," he told Inweekly. "One, he's scared tourists from going by saying, ‘Hey we're gonna make it so you can't go unless you have these specific processes.'"

According to the Reyes, the processes include having a licensed tour guide with an approved travel itinerary and agenda to be allowed to travel to Cuba, which has put a damper on tourism.

"Now to me, that seems kind of a backward way to do it, but that's what he's essentially saying he's going to do, although that hasn't been enforced yet," said Reyes.

"He's put some fear, though, in some people saying, ‘Hey we're gonna haunt you

"Let me tell you, he hasn't talked to those Cubans," said Reye. "I've been down there. I know many of them. These people are not interested in his protection of the blockade. They had, and they still have, all these small businesses popping up. It is amazing the response to lifting of sanctions

He talked with Inweekly about an 85-year-old Cuban who repairs and bicycles in the corner of his yard. It's in his home that the Pensacola CPA rents an Airbnb one-bedroom apartment.

"At night, he folds it all up. During the day, he just pulls the stuff out, and people come from all over. He fixes their bicycles.

It's amazing that he's made this business," he said.

A foreign language school is across the park from the house. When he found that the school didn't have housing for all its students, Reyes suggested to his friend that he let the school know he has a room available.

Laughing, Reyes said, "He thinks I'm the most genius marketing person because they weren't raised in capitalism. Those simple concepts are not something they think about every day, but they are coming around to it. " He said the restaurants, taxicabs and most of the retail shops are private businesses.

"There are two sweets bakeries. One is the state-run bakery. You go there, and there is like one or two of these things and big empty shelves everywhere," he said.

"Across the street is a private bakery. Much higher quality stuff. Much nicer, but it's smaller. Things are custom. It's a private business that has come up under the new small business economy."

SONIC WEAPON

This summer, the State Department reported nearly two dozen diplomats at the American Embassy in Havana had been

stricken with a variety of mysterious medical symptoms, including hearing loss and cognitive difficulties. The agency concluded the diplomats had been attacked by some sonic device.

The State Department withdrew nonessential personnel from Havana and issued an advisory urging Americans not to visit. On Oct. 3, the Trump administration expelled 15 Cuban diplomats from the United States.

Reyes has his doubts about a sonic weapon. "I've been to the residence of the embassy leader. I've been to the embassy itself. All these are buildings that have significant perimeters around them. You'd have to have this weapon a significant distance away."

Jun Qin, an acoustic engineer at Southern Illinois University, told the New York Times, "Ultrasound cannot travel a long distance."

Jürgen Altmann, a physicist at the Technische Universität Dortmund in Germany and an expert on acoustics, said the idea of a sonic weapon was "fairly implausible."

However, the issue has made it difficult for Cubans to visit their relatives in the US. To apply for a Visa, they have to request an interview with the US embassy.

"That interview costs $160 US per person," said Reyes. "They have to pay for it upfront, and if they get declined, they don't get the money back. The cost is for the interview, not for the Visa."

His friends had an interview scheduled for Oct. 4. They got a letter from the US embassy that said, "Because of our staffing reduction, we've canceled all Visa appointments. If you want a Visa to the US, we suggest you go to another country, perhaps Bogota, Columbia."

The US did not offer to refund the $320 paid for the Visa interviews.

"That's huge money for these people.

Huge money," said Reyes. "And it's embarrassing and hurts me to see that we've done that to these people. Why? Why would we not give them their money back? What is $320 to the US government?"

Still, he remains optimistic.

"We will eventually open up with Cuba," he said. "You know, you can't get toothpaste back in the tube once it's open." {in} inweekly.net

It was April 2010 when the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill became the largest and most devastating accident in American history.

The oil spill dumped an estimated 4.9 million barrels of crude oil over 87 days. Oil covered nearly 25,000-square-miles of the Gulf of Mexico and coated hundreds of miles of sensitive beaches, marshes and mangroves with oil.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi helped secure $1.5 billion in economic and environmental damages to the state from BP, one of the world's largest oil and gas companies.

And former Florida Senate President Don Gaetz (R-Niceville) then helped pass the Gulf Coast Economic Corridor Act in May 2013. The law created the Triumph Gulf Coast board to distribute the BP money to eight Florida counties: Bay, Escambia, Franklin, Gulf, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton and Wakulla.

Seven years after the oil spill, BP money meant to transform the Northwest Florida Gulf Coast economy should finally start flowing at the beginning of 2018.

The first $300 million of $1.5 billion in economic damages from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill got deposited at about 11 a.m.

Wednesday, June 21, said Stan Connally Jr. The president and CEO of Gulf Power Company and one of the seven members of the Triumph Gulf Coast board expects qualified projects with major economic benefits in the eight Northwest Florida counties to begin receiving money in the first quarter of 2018.

"We hoped to deploy some dollars before the end of the year," Connally said. "It'll be next quarter before we see any real outflow."

Connally said the board was unable to have any official meetings until after the state government approved releasing the BP money.

Since then, he said the Triumph board has worked on developing a process to approve

projects submitted for funding, set up criteria for scoring the projects and ironing out other guidelines.

The pre-application process is 1-3 pages and, if selected, parties must fill out an application that is 10-30 pages.

It's important that the approved projects have big impacts because lawmakers from other parts of the state may want to use the 15 future $80 million payments that begin in 2019 and end in 2033.

"It may seem a little onerous," Connally said. "Just because we got the first $300 million doesn't mean we'll get the next $80 or the next $80. We have to make sure we do the right things with this. Lawmakers are going to ask, ‘We gave you all of this money last year, what did you do with it?'"

Gaetz, a Triumph board member, said he hopes for matching funds to double that $1.5 billion to $3 billion. That would mean partnering with federal and state, sources, as well as private investment to pay for the transformational projects.

"This is the largest development fund in Florida history," Gaetz said. "It can have a significant impact, especially if the $1.5 billion can be leveraged, making it $2 billion or even $3 billion."

Gaetz said he expects the board to receive some "interesting and good" project proposals.

The pre-application process recently began and a deadline was set for Nov. 15. However, the board plans to continue to receive preapplications after that date.

"The money has been spent at least seven times over," Gaetz said with a chuckle. "We just have to get going and fund some good projects, which I believe we will."

The Triumph board will oversee the expenditure of 75 percent of all funds recovered from BP and each of the eight counties must receive at least 5 percent of the initial $300 million and 4 percent of the funding thereafter. This ensures each of the affected Florida counties receives some of the BP money,

especially smaller counties, such as Franklin, Gulf and Wakulla. Those counties' leaders worried that Escambia, the largest county, would suck up all the funds.

One of the big debates by the Triumph board has been how to score and weigh the flood of projects it expects to receive. It likely will be scored with letters, such as A, B, C, D to give the Triumph board members room for some subjectivity and the ability to score intangibles, Connally said.

Proposed projects should transform the region's economy by helping it to diversify.

Some target industries, include aerospace and defense; financial; water transportation or shipbuilding; artificial intelligence and IT; cybersecurity; manufacturing; and robotics.

The board will value proposals that create jobs that pay salaries above the regional average. Also, proposals that have a regional impact, instead of just a local impact, will score higher.

The Triumph board plans to hire both an economic advisor and independent advisor to help in the evaluation of the ideas that get sent to them. The board may even use a stable of evaluators, who are experts in various fields.

"We want everybody to think bigger than one set of community lines," Connally said.

FloridaWest Chief Executive Officer Scott Luth, like many in the region, has looked forward to the Triumph process beginning.

"I feel optimistic," he said. "This really can make all the plans and ideas become a reality.

It's critical we are able to continue to use those funds as intended to continue our growth and diversify our economy."

Grover Robinson IV, the District 4 Escambia County Commissioner the past 12 years, echoes Luth.

"I look back and feel we are light years from where we were 12 years ago," said Robinson, who filed to run for Pensacola mayor in 2018.

"I look forward to Triumph and seeing how significant its impact will be on our economy and environment. We've never had the money to sit back and do transformational things."

Connally said of all the places that Gulf Power has moved him during his 28-year career with the energy company, the Gulf Coast is the best place he and his family have ever lived.

Now, the region may improve even more?

"We got a great platform to grow on," Connally said. "We can be even better than we are today." {in}

WORKING ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM Escambia County Corrections

Director Tamyra Jarvis and her staff presented three possible programs to reduce the inmate population, lower the number of inmates who return to jail and save taxpayers money during the first Public Safety Coordinating Council subcommittee meeting on Oct. 24.

They presented the Alternative Sanctioning Program, Day Reporting Community Corrections Program and a Jail Re-Entry Program, all of which the county lacks. Additionally, subcommittee chairman Escambia County Circuit Court Judge Tom Dannheisser proposed implementing a Fatherhood Initiative.

Most of the nearly 90-minute meeting

at the M.C. Blanchard Judicial Building was spent discussing the Day Reporting program. It is a more intensive version of probation with inmates meeting with corrections staff three times a week and being offered education, job training and help with housing among other services.

The voluntary program initially could handle up to 80 inmates by a corrections department office staffed with two corrections officers, an administrator and administrative assistant. The program estimated to cost $60 per month per inmate would rely on a majority of its funding from grants. The corrections department plans to hire a grant writer.

With about 1,520 inmates today, Jarvis said the program would grow "over time."

"Those who have more supervision seem to do better," added Tammie Booker with corrections. "It makes them feel empowered to want to be successful."

Dannheisser proposed to the subcommittee starting a Fatherhood Initiative. He pointed out more than half of youth in Escambia County lack fathers. He said it's the main reason jail cells are bursting with inmates.

National studies and organizations support

his assertion showing young men who grow up without fathers are twice as likely to end up in jail. Meanwhile, 70 percent of juveniles in state-operated institutions come from fatherless homes.

"An intact family is the best anti-poverty, anti-crime system ever devised," Dannheisser said. "It's the elephant in the room. The numbers are undeniable."

WIN-WIN VS. WIN-LOSE Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward still is a big supporter of the Florida Gulf Coast Marine Fisheries Hatchery and Enhancement Center at Bruce Beach.

"West of city hall is just taking off," said the mayor on NewsRadio 1620 on Oct. 25. "From the Blount School property being redeveloped now to the A Street and its beautification to Corinne Jones to the fish hatchery enhancement center, they had created a piece of property that was just toxic for years and now we're going to be able to have a great asset there for the community to enjoy along with education, and hopefully get some more dollars to have people on the water with kayaks, etc."

He added, "I'm trying to figure out why this is not a good thing. No one can tell me that."

THE PENSACOLA CIVIC BAND Inweekly checked with the Escambia County Property Appraiser Chris Jones' website. Even though the Pensacola City Council approved the sale of the Blount School property last summer, the mayor's office has not closed on the deal. The city still owns the land.

The Corinne Jones pond continues to have engineering issues and washed out again during the heavy rains at the end of last month.

And after the Inweekly reported that soil tests have come back clean for Bruce Beach and no environmental remediation is in the construction documents, Mayor Hayward had to admit the city had done no environmental testing on Bruce Beach and no facts to support his "toxic" comment.

The mayor framed the discussion about relocating the fish hatchery to Port of Pensacola as a "win-lose" debate. However, Dan Lindemann, the local businessman who brought up that the hatchery lease agreement may be void, told Inweekly that he supports the hatchery but believes it should be moved to the Port of Pensacola.

Lindemann described the relocation as a "win-win" solution. The port has several vacant buildings. The Florida Wildlife and Fish Commission can save money on construction, and the Community Redevelopment Agency can figure out the highest and best use for the city's last vacant property on Pensacola Bay.

TOURISM SUCCESS Visit Pensacola recently

held its annual meeting to mark the beginning of a new fiscal year for the organization and celebrate the recording-setting success of the fiscal year that ended on Sept. 30.

Visit Pensacola President Steve Hayes said, "Through the combined efforts of Visit Pensacola's staff, tourism partners, and industry leaders, that increase is a direct reflection of the tourism industry's collaborative effort.

The Pensacola Bay Area experienced a 30-percent jump in number of visitors, 2,073,381 people. Those visitors spent $787,186,547, 16 percent higher than last year. The total tourist development taxes collected were nearly $10.2 million, an 8-percent increase.

The Pensacola Bay Area Visitor Information Centers hosted 82,000 travelers and booked 239 events that resulted in 27, 430 delegates and 35,339 room nights, valued at $35.3 million.

Nicole Stacey, the marketing director for Visit Pensacola, talked about the group bookings on "Pensacola Speaks."

"The groups are calling every day, and we are saying you know come on down," she said.

ing through town so we're getting calls every day which is super exciting."

To build on that momentum, incoming Board Chair Jason Nicholson, vice president of operations for Innisfree Hotels, relayed his goals for the upcoming year.

"My goal is to communicate to Escambia County what the role of tourism is and how it directly relates to our economy," Nicholson said. "In telling our story, my hope is to develop meaningful relationships that in turn educate and promote all that the area has to offer."

Key areas of focus in 2018 will be to continue to use data to drive business decisions and direction while focusing on service to increase business. As storytellers for the industry, the importance will be to continue developing relevant content with a focus on service to partners, the Pensacola Bay Area community and travelers to the destination.

"We want the community to be involved in telling our story," said Stacey. "We want them to know exactly what Visit Pensacola is doing and why. We want people to know we're working together to promote our piece of paradise."

GLOBAL START-UP WEEKEND The fifth

Startup Weekend Pensacola will take place Nov. 10-12 at the Cowork Annex in downtown Pensacola, in conjunction with Techstars Global Startup Weekend.

Just like previous events, Startup Weekend Pensacola 2017 will start with individuals pitching ideas they think could be the next big thing.

Teams will form around the most popular ideas, and each team will spend the next two days developing a prototype, validating the business model and getting feedback from experienced entrepreneurs and experts.

This will be the first Startup Weekend Pensacola to take part in Techstars Global Startup Weekend, a global initiative with more than 15,000 participating entrepreneurs in over 50 countries. Don't say there's nothing to do in Pensacola. For the next 12 days, there's something to see, taste and experience pretty much every day as Foo Foo Fest events take over the town.

If you're still unfamiliar with this new fall festival or you just need a quick refresher, this issue is for you. Now in its fourth year, Foo Foo Fest is a 12-day celebration dedicated to existing and new cultural events throughout the city. Most of the events we highlighted are "official"—meaning they received grant money from Art, Culture and Entertainment, Inc. (ACE) to help make their events possible and lower the cost for attendees. But we also included pretty much every other "cultural" event we could find, because that's what Foo Foo is all about.

From concerts to block parties to art installations, there's something for everyone to get excited about under the Foo Foo Fest umbrella this year— literally. So read up, start planning and get ready for culture overload. {in}

Photo by Bill Strength A brand new food event hopes to give back to our region's oysters as much as they've given us. Peat & Pearls will highlight local chefs and oyster farmers, which organizer Terry Strickland anticipates will bring more awareness to the preservation of our oyster reefs.

In August, heavy rains devastated a significant portion of Pensacola Bay's oyster crops.

"Pensacola Bay Oyster Co. is one sliver of a much larger story that is playing out across the Gulf Coast," Strickland said. "It's a story that matters deeply, whether or not you consider yourself a ‘foodie.'"

Strickland said that over the last decade, storms, droughts and oil spills have ravaged wild reefs and devastated the livelihoods of many of the region's traditional oystermen.

"If we can get people invested in the story of oysters, we can get them invested in the story of our coastal environment, and if we can convince them to value oysters as more than a commodity, we have a shot at doing some good," he said.

Strickland said that a new breed of oyster farmers are preserving the working waterfronts of the Gulf Coast, restoring coastal environments with new techniques and reviving regional varieties of shellfish that haven't been seen in decades.

"The boutique oyster movement has made oysters ‘sexy' again, which might 212 1

sound pretentious," he said. "The interesting thing, though, is that oysters are sort of a sentinel species. They're filter feeders and embody the characteristics of their environment. That makes them interesting from a gastronomic perspective, in the same way that wine is interesting. But it also makes them important from an environmental perspective."

Ticket sales for the Peat & Pearls event will also benefit the oyster shell-recycling program run by Keep Pensacola Beautiful.

"Recycling oyster shells is always important, but it's particularly critical now," he said. "Our area will soon start seeing more restoration funding from the BP oil spill. Millions have been set aside for reef restoration work. However, for that work to proceed uninterrupted, we'll need a steady supply of shells."

Admission to the main event, on Sunday, Nov. 5, includes oyster and Scotch tastings.

"We'll have about a dozen oyster farms represented, about as many chefs and whiskey programming by Glenfiddich and Old Hickory Whiskey Bar," Strickland said.

"We'll also have live music, a cigar garden, chef's demos and a bundle of other things going on. If Scotch isn't your cup of tea, we'll be offering tasting flights of champagne and sparkling wines, as well."

ture Chefs James Briscione and Brooke Parkhurst. Briscione is a Pensacola native, two-time "Chopped" champ and host of "Man Crafted," on the Food Network.

"James is an expert in molecular gastronomy and the science of flavor," Strickland said.

Briscione will be joined in the kitchen by local guest chef Frank Taylor of Global Grill and his team. Together, Strickland said, they'll be cooking a five-course dinner featuring oysters with whiskey and wine pairings for each course.

"We intend to make this an annual event and are already laying the groundwork for next year," Strickland said.

Chefs at Peat & Pearls will include Irv Miller of Jackson's Steakhouse, Dan Dun of H20 at the Hilton Pensacola Beach, Chris Sherrill of Salt at San Roc Cay, Drew Dzejak of Alys Beach, Gregg McCarthy of The Grand Marlin and Chris Rainosek of The Noble South in Mobile.

"Food is family. We're all connected by it, whether or not we've ever met," Strickland said. "The more deeply we understand those connections, the richer our experience will be and the deeper our empathy.

We've spent the last couple of centuries, obliterating these ties, cheapening our experience and alienating ourselves from our environment and our neighbors. It's time to change that." {in}

CUBED, a 12-day outdoor mural installation, is different than the Foo Foo Fest projects the two artists have taken on before.

"Ashton and I had a lot of time to talk about art ideas while in the lift for 60 plus days when we were painting the Jefferson Street Mural last year for Foo Foo Fest," Levin said.

"Everything started to look like a canvas to us.

One idea we came up with was to do a mural festival in one of the parks downtown. We brainstormed on how we could build walls for artists to paint on."

Levin said that they wanted to do something that was more engaging and interesting to look at instead of just a wall with a mural on the front and back, so they decided creating giant cubes would have a better visual impact.

What inspired your design for CUBED and the Inweekly cover?

CHOI: The kinetic-ness of the type just made sense for the personality of Pensacola. I see Pensacola as a lively city with so much to offer, and the city has grown and evolved so much in the past several years. So I wanted to represent the idea of constant movement and evolution while standing strong on the foundation of its history as the background.

ZAYAS: The cover is a reflection of what we're bringing to the CUBED event and what the Foo November 2, 2017

How would you describe your own design style?

CHOI: Two words: organized chaos. This speaks loudly in my lettering style. While I try to make everything pixel-perfect and aligned at my desk, I try to disturb—with purpose— what's perfect and simple during my lettering session outside of the office. I believe there's beauty in both perfection and imperfection. It's all about how well it's executed.

ZAYAS: My style definitely leans towards structured and purposeful. I love the energy that hand lettering can bring to a piece, but there has to be a reason for integrating it.

Design with concept and purpose behind it stands the test of time and can do a lot to push a brand to that next level.

"We had a blast painting Jefferson Street together and lots of time to brainstorm," Howard said. "Like Evan said, to an artist, everything looks like a blank canvas and after realizing we couldn't (but want to) paint every wall in downtown, we settled on CUBED." Levin said that Pensacola has a lot of talented artists and they wanted to create an event to highlight that.

"At the end of the three days of painting there will be 16 new murals that will become a part of the downtown experience," Levin said.

The four eight-by-eight foot cubes were constructed by Fluid Metalworks and will allow 16 different live paintings to happen at once in front of an audience.

"We want to continue to be at the forefront of the art scene in Pensacola and help brand this city's identity through the exposure and talents of many local artists," Howard said.

Selected CUBED artists include Joe Hobbs, Joyful Enriquez, Stephanie Garland, Austin Garcia, Gabriel Smith, YehRim Lee, Poppy Garcia, Jarrod Goldman and Cecilia Lueza as well as collaborations from Wildcat Artists, Scott Satterwhite, Valerie George and Eliza Espy of the 309 Punk Museum Project, Veronique Zayas and Somi Choi, Olga Silva and Jaime Diffee and Selina McKane and Joseph Tempesta.

"We had 46 submissions this year," Levin said. "We were really pleased with that response and I think it shows the potential of how this can become an annual event and grow each year. We wanted as much diversity as possible. It is going to be really exciting to see all of the different styles and how each artist works. What's it been like collaborating with each other for this project?

CHOI: First of all, it's been so much fun. Veronique and I have been friends even before we started collaborating.

We have great design chemistry, which made collaboration so much easier. We have different styles that we mesh to make them work better together. It's amazing when you start one project not knowing how everything will go, and in the middle of the process, you begin to see how everything comes together. That's a true joy.

ZAYAS: Somi is my lettering kindred spirit—it's fantastic to work with someone who pushes you to do something differently or approach a piece from a new angle. That's what makes our projects work so well—the opposing styles that come together to create a final piece better than either of us could manage on our own. {in}

Levin said that for his mural, he will be painting a parent and child walking through a surreal landscape observing a bird in a tree.

Howard also has a concept centered around the early learning initiative.

"The concept of the mural is to illustrate the 30 Million Words Initiative and the importance of engaging in conversation with your child in the first three to four years of their life when the brain is in a critical development stage," Levin said.

Levin and Howard both said that there is definitely an exciting and fun energy that happens when they have an audience.

"Live painting is always a blast, especially in the beautiful outdoors," Howard said. "I have painted live on cruise ships, gallery settings, and many other events, but CUBED will be something entirely unique." {in}

Yume Matsuo / Courtesy Photo As one of the most popular arts festivals in the region, Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival (GGAF) attracts thousands of art lovers to Seville Square to experience paintings, pottery, sculptures, jewelry and graphic design from over 200 prominent artists around the country.

Each year GGAF organizers also bring in a distinguished artist from another part of the globe to exhibit at the festival and speak about their art. This year's Invited International Artist is Yume Matsuo, who is from Wakayama, Japan, the sister state of Florida.

Matsuo describes herself as a "circle painter" who creates intricate designs of circles and dots to make large colorful murals.

The artist left her job as a private English schoolteacher and translator between native teachers and students last year to pursue art full-time. Before that she had been living in Ireland to study English and traveling in Europe.

"I'd known that being an artist was what I needed in my life and what I wanted to do, but I didn't make it come true for some reason," she said. "Two years ago I realized that I was just wasting my life on what I didn't want even

though I knew what I wanted. So I decided to quit my job and pursue art full-time."

Matsuo said that she's loved painting since she was 5 years old, but started using this specific style of circle patterns about nine years ago.

"I use circles mainly in my art," she said.

"I get some inspirations from traditional arts such as Japanese Ukiyo-e, especially Hokusai's Big wave."

Ukiyo-e is a Japanese art genre that was popular in the 17th through 19th centuries depicting folk tales and subjects including beautiful women, actors, landscapes, flora and fauna. Matsuo has exhibited at several shows in Wakayama, as well as shows in Osaka, Tokyo and Berlin.

"There wasn't a meaning to my work at first, but now I think I've found it," Matsuo said.

"Circles are the warmest and most peaceful shape I think. I never want to hurt someone by my art. I want people to receive warm feelings from my art. So I guess circle is the perfect shape for my style."

Since her work has a lot of intricate detail, it usually takes her several hours to complete one piece.

"To finish a postcard-size work with pens, I need about eight hours," she said.

"I use pens and acrylics. Pens are for small detailed work and acrylics are mainly for murals and large work."

This will be her first visit to the eastern

U.S., as she has visited once when in San Francisco four years ago.

Matsuo said that her art can be therapeutic sometimes, but that the main reason for drawing is for fun.

"The world is full of hardship," she said. "I want people to forget their worries and pains at least while enjoying my art. I want to reach world peace by making circles."

On Nov. 1, she visited Pensacola State College to give a lecture on her art and techniques at the Anna Lamar Switzer Center for Visual Arts. Matsuo will be at her booth near the gazebo for all three days of GGAF in Seville Square. {in}

We all know Florida is a little weird, and that's okay.

The West Florida Literary Federation's Writing on the Funny Side of Florida event series brings together three Florida humorists who prove our weird state is funny for all the right reasons.

Born in Pensacola, event speaker Craig Pittman is an award-winning journalist and 2017 Florida Book Award winner. Now living in Tampa, Pittman will talk about his latest book, "Oh, Florida!: How America's Weirdest State Influences the Rest of the Country."

In addition to Pittman, the Foo Foo Fest event will also feature Orlando-based humor columnist Eric Deckers and local author and comedienne Leanna Conley.

Aside from getting ready for her workshop, Conley has been working on her books and illustrating book two of her children's series "The Adventures of Officer Bob on Patrol." The first book can be found on Amazon.

"I'm also teaching my StandUp2Speak classes for people who want to improve their writing and public speaking skills using stand up techniques, which also is the core of my workshop for the West Florida Literary Federation at Foo Foo," she said.

Conley is also working on a memoir about growing up with Janet, her backstage November 2, 2017

mother, and how her quest for stardom as a young model affected Conley's direction in life.

"I wanted ‘The Janet Chronicles' to show that you can overcome your childhood and eventually forgive and bond with your parents," Conley said.

"Plus, she makes me laugh so much every day. She's amazing at 85, a party with legs; I had to share our stories. The book is due out within the next year or so."

Conley said that she gets her humor from her mother, Janet.

"You can't help but laugh when Janet is around," she said. "I guess it's genetic."

Originally from Michigan, Conley graduated from The University of Michigan with a Bachelor's in English Literature and has always been involved in the arts. After college, she studied improv at Second City in Chicago and acting at Circle In The Square in New York City.

"It was very tough and competitive," she said. "It was kind of a golden age. My classmates at Second City were Tim Meadows and Chris Farley, Bill Murray's little brother Joel Murray and Andy Dick. I think Bonnie Hunt was also in the main cast. I did shows at ETC Theater. I'm happy that I switched to stand up, so I can control the scene, and be the master of my fate onstage. I guess I don't share well, being an only child."

Ever seen hundreds of colorful umbrellas suspended mid-air above a city street? Neither have we. For what's sure to be one of Foo Foo Fest's most popular photoops, the Downtown Improvement Board (DIB) is bringing in Portuguese artists to install an umbrella sky right here in Pensacola.

In 2012, the vibrant project first debuted at an arts festival in Águeda, Portugal, where photos of the umbrellas went viral. Now, the umbrellas are a permanent fixture over several of Águeda's streets for three months out of the year, providing a canopy of shade for pedestrians and gaining a cult following.

Sextafeira, the creative design firm that created the urban installation, has brought the project to other areas of the world including Lisbon, France, the U.K., Bahrain and now, Pensacola.

The Sextafeira team arrived at the end of October to get started on the installation of the canopy of umbrellas, which will be suspended high above Intendencia Street between Jefferson and Palafox.

Spearheaded by Lissa Dees of the Pensacola DIB, the installation will kickoff Nov. 3 and will remain for three months.

To elevate your umbrella selfie even more, the DIB is launching a special

Umbrella Sky Project Snapchat filter and encouraging everyone to use the hashtag #PensacolaUmbrellaSky while sharing posts from the suspended exhibition.

Around the same location downtown, you can also enjoy Busker Festival during Foo Foo Festival weekend one (Friday, Nov. 3-Sunday, Nov. 5). Busker Festival is an event celebrating street performers and you can expect to see a wide range of talents on display, from music to comedy. {in}

Improv is a great skill just like stand up, Conley said, and she goes over that in her classes as well.

"I started out performing in NYC with comics like Jim Gaffigan and Lisa Lampanelli," she said. "We'd watch Dave Chappelle at the Comedy Cellar and Sarah Silverman at The Improv. It was a cool time to be in it."

In the summer of 2009, Conley moved to Pensacola to be closer to family.

"Just in time for the oil spill," she said.

"I moved here to be with my mom, aunt and cousins here in Pensacola and to take a break from New York City, the concrete jungle. Plus, I love the beach."

In addition to her books, illustration work and public speaking seminars, Conley has also worked at SoftRock 94.1, freelanced for Bella Magazine and is a Gulf Breeze Toastmaster.

"My Toastmasters of Gulf Breeze Club and writers group, Write On! Pensacola, also has contributed greatly in honing my own abilities," she said. "Conveying your ideas onstage to an audience is a very powerful medium, and can be applied to almost every part of life and work. It's certainly essential to a performer, even a sales person or presenter of any kind. And, overcoming the fear to speak makes you grow as a person and gives you a new confidence."

Conley is currently working on "The

Janet Chronicles" as well as a book called "War Stories, A Father Talks to His Daughter" that she's read for the West Florida Literary Federation.

"I'm also working on film and TV projects that come from the books," she said. "Plus, I teach whenever I can. And, hang out with my fiancé, Bob, and two 100-pound puppy Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Thor and Xander." {in}

First City Art Center (FCAC) really does make the community a more beautiful place.

And that's just the kind of thing the art

center wants to celebrate with its 24-hour Art-A-Thon.

With funding from a Foo Foo Fest grant, FCAC members Jonathan Kusnerek, Devon

Murphy and Ben Twingley have been collaborating on a fountain sculpture at Long Hollow Park across the street from the center.

On Monday, Nov. 6 the new sculpture will be unveiled at 6 p.m., and it is just one part of the non-stop celebration of creativity planned for the 24-hour event.

FCAC Managing Director Caitlin Rhea said the collaboration is a great way to incorporate art into the cityscape.

"The fountain hasn't worked for several years, it was just a little patch of grass with a concrete circle," Rhea said. "The artists had a lot of meetings to create something cohesive, but also showcase their talents and styles. It's been really fascinating to watch."

A project that big and exciting warranted a cause for celebration. Following FCAC's previous Foo Foo events such as the Day of the Dead celebration and pop-up glass blowing demonstrations, Rhea said they wanted to do something that would engage the community.

The fun begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, as the community is welcomed to join in on a mural painting on the FCAC campus.

Then, there's glass blowing demonstrations, learning to throw clay on the potter's wheel, figure drawing sessions, PechaKucha artist talks, a drag fashion show and dance party at midnight and finally, a sunrise meditation the following morning.

Open Books, which is located on the FCAC campus, will also be open the full 24 hours and are having a book sale as well as providing free coffee.

In a way, the Art-A-thon is like taking a crash course on all of the classes that are offered at FCAC. "We are a community based art center for all ages and abilities," said Rhea. "It's a creative

This year's Foo Foo Fest is bound to be full of surprises around every corner, but few as fanciful as the Fiore Flower Flashes.

Starting on Monday, Nov. 6, those "flashes" mean biodegradable floral installations will appear at several iconic locations across downtown.

Fiore owner Shannon Murphy Pallin was working in New York City several years ago and was inspired by the work of Lewis Miller NYC. This firm created art installations all

over New York using leftover floral materials to create works of public art.

Most of the public only interacts with the work of professional florists during special events like weddings or when bouquets are given as gifts to commemorate life events.

For this year's Foo Foo Fest, Pallin wanted to create something similar to the Lewis Miller NYC installations for residents and visitors of Pensacola.

While Fiore's professional services are usually purposefully designed and carefully executed, this project gives the team a new way to repurpose their work and bring joy to even more people.

"We usually give the extras away," said Pallin of the usual post-event fate of their floral creations.

For this first Fiore Flower Flash, Pallin says that the repurposed flowers will be supplemented by additional flowers specifically purchased for the event to add some variety to the color scheme.

The installation is set to appear on

Monday, Nov. 6 on Palafox Street between Wright Street and Main Street.

Once the flowers are placed, Pallin says it's up to the weather and the public how long the experience will be around. She says she hopes people who come across the installations will stop, admire, ask questions, maybe even take a few flowers.

"The whole art process will evolve," said Pallin. "It could last two days or a whole week."

The Fiore team did communicate with city and downtown officials to ensure that the installations would not be removed before time, weather and public interaction necessitate their clean up.

Pallin hopes that the Fiore Flower Flashes will beautify the city in an unexpected way during Foo Foo Fest, near iconic locations and well-known landmarks in town that may have become background noise to residents who frequent the area.

outlet for people. We have schools cutting back on their art programs...adults need an outlet after work. It's a great place to come and try new things, have fun, experience art and share work. It's a great sign of any thriving city."

Since Foo Foo Fest's inception, FCAC has been one of the benefiting cultural nonprofits.

It's a partnership that helps promote the work of the art center and the talents of Pensacola, said Rhea.

"We would not have the budget for this without the Foo Foo Fest grant," she added.

"That would have been a separate fundraiser, which can be a roadblock. Foo Foo Fest helps make the city a more vibrant place. It helps put Pensacola on the map."

Planning and coordinating a full 24-hour event is no easy feat, but Rhea is looking forward to Art-A-Thon. The best part is seeing the reactions from folks who walk through the FCAC doors.

"Even in this visual culture we can still give people something new," she said. "I know I've done my job well if we can give people an experience they've never had before." {in}

From a juried art exhibit to an electric car show, to a tiny-home on display, there will be many opportunities to discover the possibilities of renewable energy and sustainable technology. sacola. This local organization supports the national nonprofit, 350 that uses grassroots organizing, online campaigns and mass public action to work towards 100 percent clean energy solutions that work for everyone.

Christian Wagley is the program chair for 350 Pensacola and oversees the vendors for the Clean Energy Fest. We caught up with him in advance of the event to chat about the wide range of experiences available for visitors to this year's festival, all aimed at educating and inspiring people to get involved with a movement towards a clean energy future in the Pensacola area.

"Pensacola is in such a special place here on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico," said Wagley. "We're vulnerable to the choices we make in the future of the energy."

Exhibits will demonstrate the ways consumers and businesses can support a clean energy future, such as the electric car show.

One key example of what the future of clean energy will look like in Florida is the solar panels that will be on display. Unlike other

states that will rely on wind turbines, Florida has the potential to harness the power of the famous sunshine of the Sunshine State.

Wagley predicts that the tiny home, built by students at Pensacola State College, will be a crowd favorite. This building trend has gained popularity in recent years, but it's also a great example of how individuals can lessen their environmental footprint while building their dream home.

In addition to the displays of innovative technology and the science behind a clean energy future, Clean Energy Fest will welcome poet Hilton Kelley for the day, who is a winner of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize. He'll share the story of his hometown of Port Arthur, Texas, and its struggles with the oil industry.

Also on the creative side of things, the juried art exhibit Crossing Boundaries: Art and the Future of Energy will be another way for visitors to engage. This art exhibit features art from artists and designers from the Gulf Coast arts community, but also entries from UWF faculty members, scientists and engineers.

"Creative expression and art in general are a great way to tell a story and further a cause," said Wagley. "Not everybody is motivated to take action and get involved by research studies or seeing an electric car."

"We wanted to make sure the clean energy message was broad and reached as many people as we could," said Wagley.

This year's Clean Energy Fest is, at it’s core, is a celebration of the limitless possibilities available to our community as we continue the transition from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy. Wagley's hope is that visitors to this year's event will find a reason that a future free from fossil fuels excites and motivates them.

"Anybody who's concerned about public health and the quality of our natural environment would want to see that transition happen as quickly as possible," said Wagley. {in}

Stevenson asked Montana's father Alfred, who was a family friend of his mother's, if he could take the name of the tribe for his own.

"I took the name to give back to the community, and even though Tootie's gone, Monogram Hunters can still live on," Stevenson said.

Stevenson also carries on Montana's tradition of non-violence within his tribe and community. The history of the Mardi Gras Indians has a violent past. Originally they were a violent group fighting over lands and wards surrounding the parishes, and used Carnival as a way to seek revenge by attacking while disguised in dress. Montana is responsible for changing the violent nature of masking, which Stevenson is proud to carry on.

A night of poetry, prose and folk music at Open Books will honor a prolific Florida poet, writer and musician as well as celebrate the bookstore's 10th anniversary.

University of West Florida English instructor Scott Satterwhite and several others started Open Books in 2007 as a way to continue the Prison Books Project.

The nonprofit program currently sends around 6,000 books each year to inmates in Florida prisons.

The brainchild of Satterwhite and his wife Lauren Anzaldo, the closing of the project's original location at Subterranean Books prompted the opening of Open Books, originally at Barrancas Ave., as a way to continue the nonprofit. Open Books has been at its location on Guillemard St. since 2012.

Run by the proceeds of the bookstore and the time of generous volunteers, Open Books will celebrate 10 years with performances from musicians, singers and poets that include Mad Happy, Satterwhite, Mike Potters, Northwest Florida Poet Laureate Jamey Jones, hip-hop duo Black Superheroes, Aminah, Patrick Hutchinson, Charles McCaskill and LaChelle McCormick.

The event will also honor Slim McElderry, a profound but underappreciated poet, writer and musician associated with Pensacola and the Gulf Coast.

McElderry passed away in November 2013, but those who knew him want to preserve his memory with Slim Fest, an event dedicated to remembering his legacy.

Mac," his son Sun McElderry, from Seattle, said. "He was an artist and professor who was really committed to preserving Gulf Coast culture through his art."

McElderry was also a writer and completed many books and wrote memoirs, novels, poetry and plays, and was also a folk and blues singer-songwriter.

"Essentially capturing through his stories and songs the second half of the century in the South was what his life was all about," his son said. "He loved the simple rhythm of life there, the peace and quiet, and he hoped very much that his work would serve as this reference and archive knowing that it would change over time, as the old ways of life disappeared and artists were eventually replaced.

He wanted to preserve that magic."

McElderry had a small cabin in Panacea in Wakulla County, which was home base as he travelled—with a typewriter and guitar—to teach at several different colleges. He helped to establish the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory with marine biologist and conservationist Jack Rudloe and lived right next to the lab.

"They were partners and Dad would document the cultural side," he said. "They track the impacts on coastal wildlife and collect all sorts of marine life for biomedical purposes. Dad helped to make the lab well recognized."

Sun said that Pensacola was McElderry's favorite city in Florida and he had many close friends there.

"If he hadn't owned a home in Panacea, he would have owned one in Pensacola," he said. "He would travel back and forth frequently. He thought he could find kindred spirits, fellow artists and thinkers who appreciated his worth there, and the folks at Open Books were like a community for him. Scott Satterwhite has done a lovely job of helping to preserve Mac's memories and the artists' community in general."

Eerily, three months after his death, McElderry was featured on NPR's This American Life, as an unknown voice speaking about living off the coastal land in an episode called "Day At The Beach." The segment he was featured in was from a public radio show recorded in the '70s produced by Florida State University.

"They didn't know who it was because it was recorded anonymously," Sun said. "Ira Glass introduces the segment by saying this is his favorite piece of radio ever. It's about two or three minutes of this stream of consciousness monologue and that person is Dad. It was very fitting and eerie that it was so close after his death. He always knew that his work would become more valuable and appreciated and this was sort of a sign."

Sun said that he is very thrilled to see his father's legacy carried on and that Pensacola is the perfect place for it to happen as a creative center.

"I think Open Books really understands the spirit of Dad's work and appreciates what he was trying to create," he said. "It's very precious that they've chosen to carry this on."

McElderry was acquainted with poet Allen Ginsberg and was associated with the folk music revival movement of the '60s, including banjo player Mel Lymon of the Lymon Family commune.

"He was associated with a lot of well-known people, but never got a lot of recognition for his own work," Sun said.

"However, he died at peace feeling he had wrapped up his body of work and committed his stories to paper. He left it to us to remember and carry it forward and keep it alive. Open Books has an archive of his work and can help anyone explore his books if interested." {in}

news of the weird TRADITIONS The 72nd annual Yellville (Arkansas) Turkey Trot, which took place on Oct. 14, is famous for its Turkey Drop, in which live turkeys are dropped from a lowflying airplane and then chased by festivalgoers. This year, KY3.com reports, several turkeys were dropped during the afternoon despite animal-rights activists having filed a formal complaint with the sheriff's office, saying the pilot "terrorized" the birds. But pharmacist and past pilot Dana Woods told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette: "We treat the turkeys right. That may sound ironic, but we don't abuse those turkeys.

We coddle and pet those turkeys. We're good to them." Wild turkeys can fly, but in 2016, about a dozen turkeys were dropped and not all survived the fall. According to The Washington Post, over the past several years, local sponsors and the chamber of commerce have distanced themselves from the Turkey Drop, now more than five decades old. The Federal Aviation Administration is checking to see if any laws or regulations were broken, but said it has not intervened in past years because the turkeys are not considered to be projectiles.

'TIS THE SEASON Could turkeys be sensing the peril of the season? Police in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, tweeted a warning to the town's residents on Oct. 15 about aggressive wild turkeys, WBZ-TV reported. As proof, an accompanying video showed four turkeys chasing a Bridgewater police cruiser, but police were not as amused as their Twitter followers. "Aggressive turkeys are a problem in town," the department tweeted. "State law doesn't allow the police or (animal control) to remove them."

Sheila Keen married Michael Warren in 2002, NBC News reported. (Warren went to prison in 1994 for odometer tampering, grand theft and racketeering in connection with his car rental agency.) Sheila had worked for him, repossessing cars, and they were reportedly having an affair when the murder took place. While Sheila had always been a suspect, new technology finally allowed prosecutors to retest DNA evidence and build a case against her.

"Meng Meng is in puberty," zoo director Andreas Knieriem explained to the Berliner Zeitung newspaper on Oct. 22. "The reverse walk is a protest." To address the situation, zookeepers will introduce Meng Meng to Jiao Qing, a male giant panda three years older, who presumably will ease her frustration by engaging in sexual activity with her.
