In 2018, the Santa Rosa County Pre-Trial Release Program generated an estimated net savings of $1,866,408 for Santa Rosa County. The program functions under the direction of Clerk of the Court Donald Spencer, with the dayto-day supervision provided by the director of the Santa Rosa County Probation Department.

Costs of the program are offset by the collection of a one-time $50 administrative fee and drug/alcohol testing fees paid by individuals in the program. The PTR savings is based on 238 people in the program in 2018 for a total of about 34,000 days of not being incarcerated.

AMERICAN HUMANIST ASSOCIATION

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a 40-foot stone cross in the median of a public road in Maryland doesn't have to be moved because it doesn't violate the Constitution's establishment clause. The case, The American Legion v. American Humanist Association, fought the removal of the cross that honors those killed in World War I. The American Humanist Association had argued it entangled government unnecessarily with religion.

PENSACOLA BEACH TOLL BOOTHS

The system put in place in May hasn't worked, causing a huge traffic jam that lasted past 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. Two of the toll booths were switched to only take the SunPass for payment, even though only about 35 percent of the vehicles have SunPass transponders. Some commissioners are calling for the toll booth to go fully-automated and drop the toll employees. Our bet is little will change until the political pains get greater.

MILTON HIGH ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT State Attorney Bill Eddins investigated

alleged violations involving athletics at Milton High School, primarily supplements paid to sports coaches. It was alleged that these supplements were being made improperly and in some cases paid to individuals who did no work associated with the supplement. Based upon its review, the state attorney's office determined that there was insufficient evidence to establish that a crime had been committed.

However, policy violations had been committed and were referred to the Santa Rosa County School District.

CHILDREN AS PAWNS

Has our federal government lost its compassion for children? Having read the Associated Press report on a migrant detention facility near El Paso, Texas, I'd have to answer in the affirmative.

I'm surprised we haven't seen ChildFund commercials on television with Sally Struthers pleading for donations to help the infants and children in living in squalor in the overcrowded Border Patrol facilities.

AP obtained data that showed the facility had three infants in the station, all with their teen mothers, along with a 1-year-old, two 2-year-olds and a 3-year-old. There are dozens more under 12.

Fifteen have the flu, and 10 more are quarantined.

The news agency spoke with a team of lawyers that interviewed 60 children that described mistreatment, neglect and inadequate food, water and sanitation. AP reported, "Three girls told attorneys they were trying to take care of the 2-year-old boy, who had wet his pants and had no diaper and was wearing a mucus-smeared shirt when the legal team encountered him."

I may need to rethink my ChildFund commercial because the treatment of these children at the hands the U.S. government is more horrific than those from Third World countries, especially considering the splendor enjoyed by the multi-millionaires that created the facilities.

The other problem with my ChildFund commercial is the federal government won't

accept donations to improve the living conditions of these children. The Texas Tribune reported that a group of Texans tried to donate $340 worth of diapers, toys and hygienic supplies for children being held at the facility but were told the center doesn't take donations.

Two days before the AP report, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco held a hearing on the U.S. government's appeal of a federal judge's 2017 ruling that U.S. authorities breached the agreement after young immigrants caught on the border said they had to sleep in cold, overcrowded cells and were given inadequate food and dirty water.

The DOJ attorney tried to argue that the government didn't necessarily have to provide a toothbrush and soap to migrant children in the detention facilities. The judges appeared not to buy her argument.

On "Meet the Press" last Sunday when asked about the conditions at the detention facilities, President Trump told host Chuck Todd, "We're doing a fantastic job under the circumstances." And he blamed congressional Democrats for "holding up the humanitarian aid."

In other words, the children are merely political pawns. I worry for the souls of our national leaders, almost as much as I do for the children who have been treated so callously. {in} rick@inweekly.net

HOW OPIOIDS BECAME A CRISIS

By Rick Outzen The Panhandle Tiger Bay Club didn't have its usual political speaker last week.

On the program was Mike Papantonio, nationally-known trial attorney, bestselling author and accomplished jazz musician. His chosen topic was the opioid crisis.

More than 130 people die each day in the U.S. due to opioid overdoses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Abuse of opioids caused over 47,000 deaths in the U.S. in 2017, six times higher than the number of such deaths in 1999. The rapid rise in deaths prompted the Department of Health and Human Services to declare a public health emergency.

Papantonio and his firm, Levin, Papantonio, Thomas, Mitchell, Rafferty & Proctor, has made the decision to the sue the opioid manufacturers and distributors at the local level because "the counties and the cities all over this country that have had to build huge infrastructures— new EMTs, new police forces, new court systems—to be able to deal with this problem that is like a wildfire ravaging this country."

Papantonio said cities and counties have had to raise taxes raised because they needed a bigger police department and an increased number of EMTs to answer the number of overdoses that were taking place every day. He wasn't talking about treating just homeless drug addicts.

"Nothing is farther from the truth. The people I've met are people like soccer moms who had wonderful lives, raised wonderful families," he told the luncheon crowd. "And then all of a sudden, they go, and they're given a drug for seven days. And their system tells them, 'I'm addicted.' And they don't even know they're addicted."

Papantonio shared documents that showed how pharmaceutical executives misled physicians and the public so sales would continue to increase. He shared a 2013 report by the General Accounting Office that

reviewed "the history that was taking place with the narcotics industry."

He said the federal government wrote the drug manufacturers saying, "A) Stop lying to the American public; B) What you're representing in your clinicals is not accurate; C) How dare you tell the doctors that this isn't addictive and that they can give as many of these as they want; and D) We want to know the basis of your statement, where you're finding this stuff, because we can't find it."

According to Papantonio, the pharmaceutical companies didn't take the drugs off the market. Instead, they expanded their sales forces. He said, "They go out, and they say, 'We're selling so much of this, we can't even keep up with it.'"

He alleged the strategy was to determine how to keep people on OxyContin longer. "So they did studies all over the country where they said, 'Okay, if we keep them on OxyContin for 60 days, for example, we think we can probably extend it to 90 days. If we keep them on OxyContin for 20 days, we think we can keep them on OxyContin for 60 days.'"

Doctors were encouraged to increase dosages, according to Papantonio. He said the physicians were told, "No, you don't give this to somebody when they're hurting. You saturate their system all the time, and that is more successful in dealing with the pain."

When doctors began to complain that their patients were getting addicted despite the drug companies' research, the companies created a new medical term, "pseudoaddiction."

"They would send representatives to the office and say, 'Doc, I know you're worried about addiction. What you're seeing really isn't addiction'" Papantonio told the audience. "'It's something called 'pseudoaddiction.' It's something new. You know, it's in the literature, but what you're seeing here is not really addiction.'"

Another argument used by the manufacturers was that addiction was a disease, not an issue with the drugs. If a patient be-

came addicted to OxyContin, the patient was the problem, not the medication.

Papantonio said, "Ladies and gentlemen, there's been study after study after study that shows just the opposite. The genetic predisposition is a factor, but it is a minor factor."

"Across the table from me, I'm dealing with a true-to-life sociopath," said Papantonio. "They don't look like a sociopath.

They've got a Rolex watch. They have an MBA from Harvard. And nevertheless, they make decisions that affect your life.

And they're going to walk away from it, and nobody's going to be prosecuted. They're going to pay money, and it's going to be business as usual."

He complained about how aggressively the criminal justice system punishes someone that is selling three ounces of marijuana on the street corner but doesn't punish corporate executives.

He said, "Why do we treat that person different? We have to recalibrate, and we have to get control of this problem and understand they're no different. They're killing our kids, and we're letting them go just by paying money. Time and time again, they pay money, and it's get out of jail free."

This fall, Papantonio will represent the state of Nevada in a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma L.P. and its affiliates, which manufacture OxyContin and other opioids.

The lawsuit seeks civil penalties and damages for reimbursement and treatment and seeks to cease Purdue's unlawful promo-

tion of opioids on behalf of the state as a whole and the municipalities and counties.

Last week, Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford filed an additional lawsuit against over 40 alleged opioid "conspirators" including manufacturers, distributors, pharmacies and individuals alleging they had created "an unprecedented public health crisis for their own profit."

"This case arises from the worst manmade epidemic in modern medical history—the misuse, abuse, diversion and over-prescription of opioids," said the court documents.

At the Tiger Bay luncheon, Papantonio said, "It's all of them. It's the distributors.

It's the manufacturers. The case I'm going to show in Nevada under RICO is they were all working together. They all understood exactly what was being told to the doctors, and they actually promoted these lies to the doctors. So when you start hearing doctors being accused of this, you need to understand what the reality is. The reality is the industry drove this."

He said that eventually, he would like to see more than fines and settlements.

"They've made hundreds of billions of dollars, and they want out," explained Papantonio. "And they want to say, 'Well, we just want to pay you $20 billion, and gee, that's a lot of money.' Who in this room would not take a deal like that? Make $100 billion, and it cost you $20 billion. Who's not going to take that deal?"

He would like to change the way big corporations do business in this country, "to where a kid coming out of MBA school in Harvard says, 'You know, I'll tell you a little scam Uncle John did 20 years ago. He put a product on the market he knew was dangerous, but he did a calculation. He figured out how many people were going to die. And he said, 'Well, we can pay for those deaths and still make a big profit.'"

Papantonio added, "What person in this room could do the things I'm talking about and not end up in prison? So we have to change the way we think about this." {in}

DREAMSCAPE

By Jeremy Morrison There are numerous words to describe the proposed plans to improve connectivity and waterfront access in downtown Pensacola. Creative. Cool. Ambitious. Smart. Progressive. Also, expensive.

And maybe overwhelming.

Pensacola City Councilman P.C. Wu described the plan as “doable” and “transformative.” He compared SCAPE’s proposals to the development of Maritime Park, which he framed as a game-changer and key factor in the revitalization of downtown.

“This is a chance for us to have another transformative moment,” Wu said. “This is a chance for us to transform the city for a second time.”

For the past six months, New York Citybased urban design firm SCAPE has worked to come up with a plan to create a more pedestrian-friendly downtown core—a space where walkers and cyclists feel as comfortable as vehicular drivers—as well as a landscape that allows for access to Pensacola Bay. Over the past half year, SCAPE has worked with the local community, hosting a series of input sessions and presentations, to come up with its vision. The design team focused on the swath of Pensacola’s downtown that rests between the Pensacola Bay Bridge and Bruce Beach, just west of Maritime Park.

SCAPE recently unveiled its grand plan, inviting everyone into a beautiful, hip dreamscape and a future full of possibilities via lush theoretical architectural renderings. But dreams ain’t cheap. And while the design process was a gift to Pensacola—SCAPE was brought to town and its work funded by local businessman Quint Studer—the follow-through will require significant funding commitments from the city.

The plan proposed by the SCAPE team is anchored by two primary elements, referred to as ‘catalytic’ projects. The first such project pertains to a quartet of streets in the downtown core.

Dubbed the Waterfront Hashtag project, this portion of the plan focuses on Main, Cedar, Palafox and Jefferson streets.

Mapped out on the street grid, the streets make the shape of a hashtag.

The Hashtag project involves design elements such as road diets, bike lanes and crosswalks. It is designed to de-emphasize infrastructure for vehicular traffic while making the area more inviting to pedestrians.

The proposals slated for Main Street are fairly illustrative of the Hashtag project’s overall aim. Whereas Main Street now features wide 12-foot lanes and a dearth of opportunities for safely crossing the lanes of flowing traffic, SCAPE is suggesting that the lanes be slimmed to nine or 10 feet, that crosswalks be implemented, that the route include a bike lane and also a physical median dividing eastbound and westbound lanes.

One of the more dramatic elements involves transitioning a stretch of Cedar Street to accommodate a plaza-like environment.

The streetscape would feature alternating bio-swales, or expanded curbs featuring vegetation, on either side of the road to slow vehicles down and would also allow for the street to be closed to cars altogether. This is a European concept, referred to as a woonerf street, meaning living street.

The Cedar Street proposal seems to embody the overall spirit of SCAPE’s objective—to create uninterrupted routes where pedestrians can navigate downtown. While the improvements proposed for Main, Palafox and Jefferson also incorporate elements that better the environment for pedestrians, the changes proposed for Cedar would offer perhaps the most pleasant traverse.

SCAPE’s other catalytic project involves Bruce Beach and calls for developing the site into a welcoming waterfront space and community hub. Currently, Bruce Beach is effectively hidden, an urban gem lying a stone’s throw from Main Street.

“It’s an incredible space,” said Gena Wirth, design principal with SCAPE. Wirth described Bruce Beach as “a little

slice of nature” nestled within the urban core.

She also noted how the site, at 11.5 acres, is relatively large. For a point of reference, she explained, the nearby Admiral Mason Park is only 7.5 acres, while Bryant Park in her native New York City is nine acres.

Plans for Bruce Beach include connecting the public waterfront with Main Street via a park-like atmosphere, featuring tiered terraces and an overlook bluff. Portions of the site will be left natural, while other areas will be developed to include elements like a splash pad, kayak storage facility and a 15,000- to 20,000-square-foot educational center that focuses on the area’s ecology, culture, history—such as the beach’s historical importance to the local African-American community—and everevolving relationship with the waterfront.

In tandem with SCAPE’s work, the impacts of the team’s proposed plan were fed through a calculator in an effort to figure out what the associated economic benefits might be. According to New York-based economist James Lima, the projects could have a considerable economic upside.

“The more I see of this plan, the more excited I get for Pensacola,” Lima said.

As for the proposal for Bruce Beach, the economist said, any park-related improvements should be viewed as promising.

In general, public spaces that people want to hang out intend to drive surrounding real estate values upward.

“A park strategy is really a strategic part of a place’s economic strategy,” Lima said, ballparking valuation increases for properties within a couple of hundred feet of a public park at around 20 percent. “We think there’s a strong stimulative effect that will occur.”

Both projects—Bruce Beach and the Hashtag—are expected to be drivers of both new real estate development, as well as an increase in the value of existing properties downtown. Lima outlined the projections for each.

As an associated benefit of the Bruce

Beach project, Lima projected that existing properties would see a combined $2.8 million increase in assessed value, and new properties would add another $6.6 million to that. That would mean a total property tax benefit to the city of about $1.7 million.

The Hashtag project, the economist said, would result in existing properties jumping $29.6 million in value, while new properties generated $27.9 million in value. That would mean $11.6 million for the city tax rolls.

“We think our numbers are extremely conservative,” Lima said.

Pretty pictures can go a long way. They can spark one’s imagination. They can excite a community.

But after all the pretty pictures have been taken off their easels and the SCAPE team has returned to New York City, the difficult conversations must begin, conversations about funding and about how far Pensacola can realistically expect to go towards realizing SCAPE’s dream vision.

And while it may be difficult to get a fair read on what such conversations might sound like with psyches still bathing in the afterglow of SCAPE’s proposals, members of the Pensacola City Council at least seem to be on board with the plan in concept.

“My gut reaction,” said Councilman Jared Moore, after digesting SCAPE’s proposal, “I want to be there. I want to walk those streets and pedal on those streets.”

Council President Andy Terhaar agreed—“It’s a great plan and something we’ve got to get to work on”—saying that portions of the Hashtag plan likely represented the low-hanging fruit, while the Bruce Beach proposal posed a more formidable financial hurdle.

As for funding? Terhaar said it’ll likely come down to community support.

“I think there’s going to have to be some outside money that’s going to have to have to come in,” Terhaar said. “Public or private, there could be a combination of both. I do think that the private sector knows that they benefit from this, so we’ll see.” {in}

EXPENSIVE DRINK In May, British politician Nigel Farage was doused with a $6.50 banana and salted caramel milkshake while campaigning. The media labeled the political protest “milkshaking.”

Last week, a judge ordered the milkshake tosser, Paul Crowther, to pay £520 (about $650) in damages, including £239 ($330) for Farage’s lapel microphone, plus his dry cleaning and distress.

Earlier this month, Congressman Matt Gaetz was grazed by a slushee, tossed by Amanda L. Kondrat’yev. She was charged with simple battery. How much will Kondrat’yev’s protest cost her?

POLLING DISTRICT 1 In an Inweekly/Political Matrix poll of 450 likely Republican voters in State House District 1, we found that 52.4 percent would re-elect controversial State Rep. Mike Hill today, with 22.4 percent saying they wouldn’t and 25.1 percent undecided.

However, when we looked at Hill’s attempt to ban abortion even in the case of rape, incest, domestic violence and similar issues, we found about only 34 percent of the GOP respondents agreed with him. Over 48 percent disagreed with Hill’s position, and another 17 percent were undecided.

We found a similar disconnect between Rep. Hill and the Republicans in his district regarding protecting the LGBTQ community from discrimination by employers. At the May meeting of the Women for Responsible Legislation, Hill had stated that such legislation was “not the value of Northwest Florida.”

Over 48 percent of the Republicans polled disagreed with Hill’s opposition to laws protecting the LGBTQ community in the workplace, and another 17 percent were undecided.

The persons sampled were likely Republican voters of the Florida House District 1 with a voting score of 100 percent for the general election cycles. The voters were called using an Interactive Voice Response system during the hours of 1-7 p.m. between June 11-14. The Margin of Error for this study is +/- 4.5 percent with a confidence level of 95 percent.

AND MIKE LIKED THE RESULTS After being called “fake news” for two weeks by the state lawmaker and his supporters, Inweekly has picked up an unlikely new fan—Rep. Mike Hill.

for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC) and the Andrews Research & Education Foundation, the research arm of the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, have signed an agreement to collaborate on human-performance research.

“We’re really fortunate to have two world leaders in human-performance right here in our community,” said Ken Ford, co-founder and CEO of IHMC. “This partnership is going to leverage the work of both organizations for the benefit of sports medicine as well as programs geared toward improving the capabilities and resilience of astronauts, fighter pilots, divers and other elite members of our military.”

The two will share office and lab space at their Pensacola and Gulf Breeze facilities.

The scientists and doctors will collaborate on research into areas ranging from optimizing physical and cognitive performance to developing technologies aimed at helping high-performing humans like professional athletes, astronauts and fighter pilots.

“People here at AREF are thrilled they’ll be able to work with IHMC in areas that will help us with neurosurgery, neuroscience, ophthalmology and, of course, sports medicine,” said Ashton Hayward, Andrews Research & Education Foundation president.

Immediate plans include IHMC and AREF personnel working together on current ongoing research projects as well as developing proposals for future projects and grants.

CELEBRATING 120 YEARS In June

1899, a small group submitted the original application for establishing an Orthodox congregation in Pensacola, making B’nai Israel one of the oldest Jewish congregations Florida. Its officers were Alex Lischkoff, president, N. Weiland, vice president, M. Solomon, secretary, and N. Zung, treasurer.

The trustees were C. Marcus, H. Cashman, J. Morris, J. Herschkovitz and S. Israel.

In 1923, a house at 400 N. Barcelona Street was purchased and became the new home of B’nai Israel. As the congregation grew in the 1940s, efforts began to build a new synagogue at Mallory Street and Ninth Avenue. Ground was broken on Dec. 2, 1953, and the complex was dedicated on Sept. 26, 1954.

The following year, B’nai Israel affiliated with United Synagogues of America, becoming a conservative congregation.

B’nai Israel Synagogue will celebrate the 120th anniversary of its founding with a gala and Jewish music concert, exhibit at Voices of Pensacola and reunion of local musicians and former members the weekend of June 28- 30.

The spark that led to this historic occasion was the chance reunion last fall of renowned Cantor and Pensacola native Martin “Moshe” Bear, Rabbi Samuel Waidenbaum and president of B’nai Israel Jerome B. Gordon at the Pensacola Beach residence of former Synagogue President Eugene Rosenbaum.

The festivities will begin 3-5 p.m.

Friday, June 28, with a public exhibit on the history of B’nai Israel synagogue at the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center, 117 E. Government St. Later on Friday at B’nai Israel will be a brief musical prelude at 6:30 p.m. followed by services at 7 p.m. at the synagogue, 1829 N. Ninth Ave. Shabbat services start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, and will include musical liturgy performed by Martin Bear, Amy Goldstein and Greg Watson. Sunday, June 30, at 11 a.m., Rabbi Waidenbaum will intone memorial prayers at the B’nai Israel Cemetery gravesites of parents and relatives.

LEGEND PASSES Former Escambia County

Clerk of the Court Ernie Lee Magaha, Sr. passed away on June 18 at the age of 91. Magaha first ran for clerk of the court in 1956 and held the

office for 14 terms until he was defeated in the GOP primary by Pam Childers in 2012.

In 1995, when Escambia County Comptroller Joe Flowers got in trouble for mishandling county investments and losing $15 million, Gov. Lawton Chiles asked him to assume the additional responsibilities of the comptroller’s office. The two offices were later combined.

When he was term-limited out of the legislature, State Sen. W.D. Childers pressured County Commissioner Mike Whitehead to step aside and run against Magaha in 2002. Magaha trounced him by 33,000 votes.

Five years later, County Commissioner Whitehead and County Administrator George Touart battled Magaha over a new computer system, ordering the clerk of court pay an

outstanding bill—$467,060—to Boulder, Colo.based Solbourne Computer Inc. for Oracle software with which Magaha’s staff had issues.

Magaha had already battled Touart, refusing to pay the county administrator’s $16,115 legal fees in his defense of charges by Arety Angel’s strip club owner Arety Sievers’ that Touart and Escambia County Sheriff Ron McNesby conspired to coerce her into forgiving a $7,000 debt run up by Touart’s son, Matthew.

Later in 2007, Magaha was praised for being one of the first in Florida to withdraw all of its county’s money ($75 million) from that state-run investment pool that was suffering from the subprime mortgage slump. Escambia County didn’t lose a dime.

In October 2012, the Board of County 11

Commissioners voted to rename the Escambia County Governmental Complex to the Ernie Lee Magaha Governmental Complex.

UNITED WAY EVOLVES Previously known

as the Community Chest, the United Fund and United Way of Escambia County, the organization will now operate as United Way of West Florida.

In April, United Way of West Florida expanded its service area to incorporate Santa Rosa County. President and CEO Laura Gilliam said, “We have been serving Escambia County for 95 years, and as we move forward, it was important to have an identity that represents every person in every community that we serve.”

She added, “We’ve been able to serve our community for as long as we have because of our organization’s willingness to evolve and adapt. As our community changes, so do the issues it faces. We will continue to grow to meet those most pressing needs.”

In July, United Way of West Florida will Stuff the Bus in advance of the 2019-20 school year. Last year, over 35,000 school supplies worth over $60,000 were donated to support children in Escambia County, in addition to $22,800 in monetary gifts. Stuff-AThons will be held in Escambia County at 10

United Way of West Florida will again host the single largest day of volunteerism in Northwest Florida, as the 27th Annual Day of Caring will take place on Oct. 4. Last year, over 900 individuals rolled up their sleeves to complete 122 service projects at over 55 agencies and schools in Escambia County. NEW HOSPICE CENTER Covenant Care,

the largest nonprofit home health and hospice care organization in the region, has relocated and upgraded its Center for Hospice Care at West Florida. The new 11-room facility—which is moving from the third to first floor—features an intimate setting where a team of caregivers provides round-the-clock care.

“Covenant Care’s new Center for Hospice Care at West Florida Hospital builds upon the excellent care our team has given to patients at that location for 14 years,” said Jeff Rogers with Covenant Care. “This new space will help us care for our hospice patients in a warm, home-like setting where every member of a family can find comfort.”

The new Center for Hospice Care includes space for family visits and counseling, a private courtyard, meditation area and community gathering space.

Sisters That Stray and their postcard-worthy Instagram feed might seem too good to be true, but it's all reality.

Their profile—sprinkled with photos of beaches in Costa Rica, yoga poses and colorful, plant-based dishes—is their reality, and they manifested it.

Pensacola natives Manda and Meleah Manning are the sisters and online holistic wellness coaches behind the nomadic-named account and corresponding blog.

They first started the brand Sisters That Stray as a travel blog while backpacking across Europe in 2015. But that wasn't totally fulfilling them.

While living in Costa Rica for nine months, they had an epiphany.

"As much as we love traveling, we

started to explore, 'What is it that sets our soul on fire and makes us excited to wake up every day?'" Manda said. "We both realized it lies in health and wellness."

Teaching and practicing yoga in Costa Rica was their inspirational starting point.

"We were always pretty deep in the jungle, in these really cool studios we got to teach in," Meleah said. "We were surrounded by the power of the jungle, the sounds of toucans and jungle noises."

Practicing yoga while surrounded with nature had an impact. It helped them connect to their higher powers, Manda said.

"We just have such a greater appreciation for nature and the power and energy that lies in nature," Manda said. "Once you learn to tap into it, you can find that inside yourself, and you can tap into that at any time, anywhere you are."

The two have made it their goal to help others do the same. They will channel their Costa Rican experience into a pop-up workshop at Wild Lemon. The 90-minute class will start with breath work and end with a guided meditation.

"We want to bring the essence of the jungle and the energy we experienced in Costa Rica and share that in our practice," Manda said. "The theme will be connecting to your higher power."

Travel is still at the heart of their work and future plans. They leave for Bali and Southeast Asia in a month.

Applications are open for the GGAF Emerging Artists program. This program, developed in partnership with Artel Gallery, gives new artists a chance to be a part of the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival and offers them guidance in what is involved in being in an arts festival. Applications are open to artists who have limited experience participating in arts festivals and are residents of Escambia or Santa Rosa Counties. Two artists will be chosen to participate in this year's festival.

GGAF will waive fees for the two artists and will provide a booth and mentor to help guide them through the process.

Shovels & Rope couldn't keep family out of it if they tried.

Child No. 2 was in the oven when the folk duo, composed of husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, created their latest album, "By Blood." The title track is a reflection of new parenthood, Hearst said.

"It's written from the perspective of a dad that's astounded by the new relationship with a thing that cries a lot," Hearst said. "We thought that it suited the overall theme for a record as a title because even though the songs aren't all about our family, it's about all the ties that bind people and the inner struggle of people to up their own humanity."

Growing their family not only made their schedule crazier but also shifted their perspectives, Trent explained.

"You can't help but maybe have a little more compassion or understanding and imagine everybody as somebody's baby."

"I think it makes you look at the world a little bit differently. You can't help but maybe have a little more compassion or understanding and imagine everybody as somebody's baby."

"We had some discussions about how a lot of times the concert films can come across as flat and a little bit boring, just because it's impossible to recreate what you're experiencing in the room when you're attending a concert," Trent said. "You can't get that through your TV or your computer screen even if you turn the volume all the way up. It's just not the same."

After recording two nights of audio and video at The Orange Peel in Asheville, N.C., they discussed the concept with filmmaker Curtis Millard.

"Curtis had the idea of making it into something different that nobody's really seen before, which is weaving in a narrative," Trent said. "Not documentary footage, but actively writing a script and getting some local actors and comedians to be part of the thing. We started collaborating and throwing ideas against the wall and ended up having this thing we think is really interesting. You get the live show, but it's like a movie within the show."

Trent enjoyed collaborating with local entertainers.

"We specialize in different things, but it's a similar type of brain," Trent said. "We're all performers, creative people and trying to do something fun and interesting."

It isn't just about the music, Hearst said.

"When people see it, it's definitely an overarching theme outside of our brilliant stellar performance—a guy who's down on his luck, going through some major transitions in his life, and he's trying to keep hope alive," Hearst said. "The message of the movie is that's a universal struggle. Everybody's going through that. It doesn't matter if you're humble or bougie, the struggle for everybody is to find authenticity and happiness in their life." {in}

"Michael got the idea for this dramatic, cinematic song about humanizing these tornadoes and anthropomorphizing them as naughty ladies coming to devastate a place with their guile," Hearst said. "On one level, there's a little kid saying, 'Dad can we outrun this thing; can we get away from these twisted sisters?' But it works on two levels. It's also, I picture a little girl talking to her dad, and it's the dangerous womanhood coming at them."

The couple keeps everything close to home. But instead of usual tools like shovels and rope (pun intended), they stash microphones, compressors and pre-amps in their shed, a makeshift backyard studio.

"Think of it as a small mother-in-law cottage but a recording studio," Hearst said.

They have recorded every album in some manifestation of a home studio. In fact, this is the first to be as far away as the backyard.

"It started out because we had to—then we were always on the run," Hearst said. "We didn't have any money. We didn't have a record deal. Then Michael found a joy to that aspect of the work and had a knack for it."

"It's easy for us," Trent said. "It's creatively satisfying. It doesn't cost us anything. We're in complete control of how it sounds. We don't have to go anywhere."

Future Perfect, a web startup, will happily accept your $350 fee to "email you a customized list of names" to choose from, plus 15 minutes of phone time with one of its consultants.

"Working your way through thousands of alphabetized names can be a useful exercise for some," the website explains, "but the lists we provide are personalized, hyper-curated and unique to each client's specific criteria."

They'll even help you name your pets! WABC reports that Future Perfect offers lessexpensive packages as well, such as a $100 "namestorming session."

OOPS! As members of New Life Baptist Church in Advance, North Carolina, prepared to merge with a nearby congregation, they removed the handmade steeple from their building, intending to return it to church member Mike Brewer, who made it.

But a passerby who saw the steeple at the curb on June 5 thought it was intended for garbage pickup and took it home, sparking a different kind of steeplechase, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Church pastor Matthew Pope called it a clear misunderstanding: "The person assumed we were throwing it out. She ... didn't want it to go to the dump." The unwitting steeple thief saw a post about the missing structure on Facebook from Pope's wife and returned the steeple five days after its disappearance.

AWESOME! In Saint Petersburg, Russia, motor enthusiast Konstantin Zarutskiy unveiled his newest creation in early May: a Bentley Continental GT sedan refitted with heavy-duty rubber tank treads instead of regular tires. He calls the resulting vehicle "Ultratank" and is hoping to get permission from the local government to drive the car on city streets. Zarutskiy tells EuroNews his Ultratank is very easy to drive, although creating it took him seven months as he faced a number of technical challenges.

•Hundreds of divers set a Guinness World Record on June 15 at Deerfield Beach, Florida, where they met to perform an underwater cleanup. Fox35 reported that 633 divers collected 9,000 pieces of debris on the ocean floor during the event, which was organized by Dixie Divers. The previous record, 615 divers, was set in the Red Sea of Egypt in 2015.

graph reported that Galdelli had confessed to posing as George Clooney and opening an online clothing business "to trick people into sending money." The two would also sell fake Rolex watches online, sometimes sending packets of salt to their customers instead of wristwatches. Clooney testified against the couple in 2010, but they fled Italy before being arrested there. Galdelli was arrested in Thailand in 2014, but soon escaped after bribing prison guards. The pair will be returned to Italy for trial.

LAST WISHES Laurence Pilgeram, who died in 2015 in California, paid Alcor Life Extension Foundation $120,000 to preserve his body indefinitely at minus 196 degrees Celsius in the hope of being brought back to life in the future. But a month after his death, his son, Kurt Pilgeram of Dutton, Montana, received a box containing his father's ashes. The company sent all but the elder Pilgeram's head, which is stored in liquid nitrogen at its facility in Arizona. "They chopped his head off, burned his body, put it in a box and sent it to my house," Kurt told the Great Falls Tribune. He is suing Alcor for $1 million in damages and an apology—plus the return of his father's head. "I want people to know what's going on," he said. For its part, Alcor says its contract was with Laurence Pilgeram and that it met that agreement. The company contends Kurt is trying to get the life insurance money that paid for Alcor's services. The trial is expected to begin in 2020 in California.

CHUTZPAH German Instagram "influencers" Catalin Onc and Elena Engelhardt have faced a digital dressing-down after they set up a GoFundMe page requesting donations for a bike trip to Africa. They want to raise about 10,000 euros for the jaunt, but some people aren't on board. Onc and Engelhardt live with Onc's mother, who supports them by working at two jobs, the Independent reported. They posted on their Instagram page: "Some will just tell us to get jobs, like everyone else and stop begging. But when you have the impact we do on others' life (sic), getting a job is not an option. A normal job at this point would be detrimental." Commenters let loose on the couple: "Get a job and treat your mum, she shouldn't be funding her grown son to wander the world like a lost boy." And, "You're not impacting anyone's life, you are just a couple of freeloaders trying to get holidays paid for by mugs." {in}
