entering the U.S. is a misdemeanor federal offense, punishable by up to six months in prison. In the past, those apprehended weren't prosecuted but were put into immigration proceedings and deported, unless they met the threshold to pursue an asylum claim. The Trump administration has chosen to prosecute the adults and separate children from them. Over the weekend, U.S. officials released images showing conditions inside an old warehouse in Texas, where hundreds of immigrant children were held in metal cages, with many using large foil sheets as blankets. Over 2,000 children are being held in detention camps. Explain to us again how the Bible says this is okay, Mr. Sessions.

BAYVIEW PARK The mayor's office blew it. Instead of being open with the public about why he wanted an $8.25 million community center, Mayor Ashton Hayward and his staff acted like the $2.2 million increase over the original budget was solely due to rising construction costs. Sadly, there is no paper trail to show what really happened, and the explanations given make little sense. Mayor, it's okay that you wanted a boathouse, but you should have shared your vision before the taxpayers paid to have it designed. Over $700,000 have been spent, and the neighborhood will have to wait for the next mayor to restart the process, according to your staff.

PLEDGE TO CAMPAIGN FAIRLY Dirty politics have been a part of the American political landscape since Colonial times. Heck, listen to the "Hamilton" soundtrack, and you'll learn how vicious our founding fathers were as they established this nation. Alexander Hamilton loved to write letters to the editor using fake names to attack his political opponents. The duel that cost Hamilton his life was over attacks against the character of Aaron Burr. Escambia County has a history of dirty political campaigns. When a candidate is trailing, the temptation to "go negative" can be immense, even though recently it hasn't worked in local elections. I've met many of the candidates seeking office this year, and I'm optimistic that this campaign season might be different. But I have a suggestion to keep our campaigns positive. The chambers of commerce in some areas ask candidates to sign a fair campaign practices pledge. They will only endorse candidates that adhere to the basic principles of honesty, fairness, responsibility and respect because those who fail to uphold those principles erode the public's trust and confidence in government. The honesty principle mandates two commitments. First, the candidates agree that their campaign communications will present only fair, relevant and truthful information to the voters for the consideration of their candidacy and their opponents' campaign. Secondly, they will present their positions and

record candidly and forthrightly, so that the voters can judge their candidacy for office. All assertions made in their campaign communications will be documented. As far as fairness, the candidates promise to not release irrelevant information that includes appeals to prejudices based on race, sex, sexual preferences, religion, national origin, physical health status or age, as well as information concerning the candidate's family. Campaigns are difficult enough without bashing a candidate's loved ones. Family members should not be targets. The candidates also agree to not take advantage of any position they hold in the public, private or nonprofit sectors to pressure people to support their campaign. Under responsibility, they pledge to support full participation in the electoral process and will take no action to discourage such participation. The candidates agree they are fully responsible for their campaigns. They will make no excuses for mistakes. They will immediately and publicly repudiate those who take actions that are inconsistent with the conduct pledge and either help them or hurt their opponents. To meet the respect principle, they must agree to treat all opponents and their supporters with courtesy and civility, even when they disagree about what is best for voters served by the office sought. It's not too late for the Greater Pensacola Chamber to adopt a pledge requirement. {in} rick@inweekly.net

BARKER ON THE HOT SEAT

Rendering by Caldwell Associates

By Rick Outzen On June 14, the Pensacola City Council voted overwhelmingly to keep the budget for the proposed Bayview Community Center at $8.25 million and, in effect, rejected Mayor Ashton Hayward's effort to increase the cost to $9.6 million. At the meeting, Hayward's chief financial officer, Dick Barker, tried to explain how the budget increased from $6.05 million to $8.25 million to $9.6 million. Barker, who has worked for the city since 1980, tried to convince the council and public that nothing was unusual about how his department handled the project. Before last week's meeting, the council had four votes regarding the new Bayview center. In February 2016, they authorized a reimbursement resolution and appropriated money for Fire Station #3 ($3.3 million) and the Bayview Resource Center ($6.05 million). In September 2016, they approved the FY 2016 that budgeted that amount for the facility. In January 2017, the council approved hiring Caldwell Associates Architects to design a $5.5 million center. In September 2017, they voted to increase the budget to $8.25 million after having only a day to review the final design. Inweekly, Pensacola News Journal and the public have questioned the jump from $6.05 million to $8.25 million in a year, but the project might be under construction had not the bids come back so high and the mayor's office tried to get the contract awarded as an add-on item at the May meeting. Barker appeared to be surprised that there was any controversy over the finances 66

when he appeared before the council last week. After all, he told the board the new project estimate was $8.25 million at a budget workshop in January 2017. However, he failed to mention that only two council members attended the meeting, Sherri Myers and Gerald Wingate, and both expressed concerns about the higher estimate. In his slide presentation, Barker said that on March 9, 2017, "an item was given to council concerning a moratorium on any encumbering of LOST funds at that time. Stated in that item, the Bayview Resource Center was at $6.05 million, and the current estimate is $8.25 million." The CFO said that staff proceeded with designing the $8.25 million facility "once the council was informed of that." However, no vote was taken. A taxpayer reviewing the FY 2017 budget and the CAA contract wouldn't have known the budget had changed. When the media reported on the public forum about the center two months later, the reporters stated it was a $6.05 million project because that was the budget listed on the city website. Barker also failed to mention that he had downplayed the $8.25 million estimate at the budget workshop. He said at the time, "This is all preliminary, but instead of having to come back and ask for more funds, we put in what we know at this time. And it is council's final decision." The council held a second budget workshop on Local Option Sales Taxes on March 20, 2017. Barker wasn't present, which might explain why he didn't mention it in his presentation. The $8.25 million was presented to the council on a spreadsheet, and several members expressed concerns.

Council President Brian Spencer said the increase didn't "fall within the standard contingency percentage." He expected an "action item forthcoming for us to revisit this." The action item wasn't given to the council until Sept. 19, 2017, the night before the final budget hearing. The Bayview Community Center, even at the $8.25 million budget, is the most expensive community center in the city's history. The facility is $2 million more than was spent on both the Theophalis May and Woodland Heights Community Centers. Barker tried to convince the council that the two centers in African-American neighborhoods had higher percentage increases in their budgets than Bayview by using the initial $1 million in the 2007 Pennies for Progress spreadsheet for each facility. "By the time we got to 2012, and I have the detail on this on another slide, both of them were about $3 million," he told the council. When the centers were built in 2015, the May Center cost $3.14 million and Woodland Heights $2.98 million. "If you just do percentages—and you have to be careful when you do percentages—but looking at the percentages, we had a 214 percent increase and 198 percent increase for those two centers," Barker said. "From the bid that we received from the beginning, that's a 58 percent increase on the Bayview Center."

"From the bid that we received from the beginning, that's a 58 percent increase on the Bayview Center." Dick Barker Most council members realized the $1 million allocations for the two centers were placeholders in the first Pennies for Progress plan in 2007 and weren't intended to be the final budgets for them. Mayor Hayward made that clear when he recommended increasing the budgets in 2011, four years before the centers were completed. And the council voted on the $3 million budgets before the design work began. Councilman Spencer asked Barker, "Are you suggesting those AIA (American Institute of Architecture) agreements started out at a low of $1 million?" Barker replied, "No, sir, I'm sorry. If I went ahead and explained it—" "Okay, I just wanted to clarify," said Spencer. "The AIA agreements had a number perhaps of $3.10 million." The AIA contract between CAA and the city was another problem that Barker tried to explain. The agreement, dated Jan. 31, 2017, was for a $5.5 million center. In July 2017, the architect's invoices began to include nearly $120,000 in basic service

costs not listed in the contract. The city paid the invoices without changing the purchase order or asking for an amendment to the agreement. The additional charges were pointed out to the council by Butch Hansen, the council's budget analyst, when he reviewed the accounting for the Bayview project. He determined the mayor's office had a more expensive project in mind than what the city council approved in September 2016. "My review of the history and available documentation of this project concludes that the project was not planned at a $6 million total cost level from the beginning, as initially approved by council and then prescribed in the A&E contract approved by the council," Hansen told the council. "Hence cost increases from the initial approved $6 million project are a combination of design enhancement and construction cost increases, the balance of which I have not been provided information to ascertain."

"Everything else will get paid except that amount of money. I will not pay that amount of money because it exceeds the budget." Barker Barker said the purchase order and contract hadn't changed because the firm's invoices hadn't exceeded the contract amount. The agreement was for $739,328, and CAA has only been paid $597,969. However, there are two invoices that have been received that have yet to be paid. "They have submitted invoices today over budget of $24,982," he said. "That will not get paid. Everything else will get paid except that amount of money. I will not pay that amount of money because it exceeds the budget." In other words, CAA could have billed the city for anything as long as the total billing didn't exceed $739,328. Fortunately for city taxpayers, the AIA won't let its members do that. CAA's invoices needed to reflect the actual services done by line item. The budget had to be changed on the invoices, regardless of the city purchase order and contract. Despite the inconsistencies in his presentation, the CFO insisted he had done nothing wrong. "I never planned to deceive anybody, as the paper said," said Barker. "I can understand that certain reporters don't understand the business we do and how it works, but all the processes that we went through, that I have reviewed, that my staff has reviewed, are consistent with the processes that we have used in the past." {in} inweekly.net

VISIONING FOR THE PORT By Sammi Sontag The City invited residents to participate in a conversation about its "Portside Vision and Reinvestment Strategy" in a press release issued on June 11. Pensacola's 50-acre Port has been a significant contributor to our economy for centuries, but the city enterprise has hit hard times over the past three years. In 2016, Port operating expenses exceeded revenues by $109,500. Last year, the net operating loss was $721, 400. According to the most recent unaudited quarterly financial report, it is estimated that the Port will be short by $330,000 after depleting its reserves by Sept. 30. Two years ago, Councilwoman Sherri Myers convinced the council to approve $100,000 for an economic feasibility study of the Port of Pensacola. After little action from the mayor's office, Myers proposed in June 2017 that the council appoint an Economic Feasibility Study Committee to jump-start the effort. City Administrator Eric Olson told the council that the mayor's office would hire a real estate and industrial professional to conduct a study and provide recommendations on the entire 50 acres. The firm would analyze the low performing assets, draft a series for requests for proposal and help market them. Myers amended her motion to support Olson's plan and dropped the study committee. Myers was pleased to see last week's announcement about the Port. "(The mayor's office) dragged their feet, and then decided they were interested," Myers told Inweekly. "During the 2017 council budget workshops, I suggested the mayor's office take the money and get the study done. I am glad he is moving forward with this." Councilman Brian Spencer is also pleased. "I think the mayor and administration is doing exactly what they were instructed

to do," Spencer said. "They have really pushed forward with the first phase of this project, which is the fact-finding. And they will continue to do just that as the Portside vision continues."

"I think the mayor and administration is doing exactly what they were instructed to do." Brian Spencer The decision has been made to partner with the global infrastructure advisory firm Moffatt & Nichol. The company specializes in structural, coastal and civil engineering as well as environmental sciences and economic analysis. "We don't have any reports yet from Moffatt & Nichol, but I'm sure they're doing data research about Pensacola's demographics to figure out what the next phase of the project is," Spencer said. "But I'm very pleased with the caliber and the depth of experience of this firm." Over the next four months, Moffatt & Nichol will explore the different ways in which the Port could evolve, according to the press release. Pensacola residents, port users and other stakeholders are encouraged to engage in the preliminary parts of this study by offering feedback and attending open houses, according to the press release. However, the City and its consultant had no interest in giving any more background on the visioning effort other than what was in the press release when Inweekly contacted them. The Director of Waterfront Planning with Moffatt & Nichol, Scott Lagueux, has been unreachable, while the senior project manager with Moffatt & Nichol, Jeff Helms, refused to answer questions regarding the project. "I am not authorized to say anything right now, and it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the project," Helms said. "So, if you have any further questions, direct them to the City." tory. The Port of Pensacola has conducted trade and transportation dating back to the 1500s. In the beginning, goods shipped through Pensacola included regionally harvested lumber, locally made bricks and sailing ship masts. But as Pensacola evolved, the Port's cargoes did, too. Manufactured paper, wind turbines, power plant components and services supporting offshore industries became part of the Port's specialization within the broader network of Florida and Gulf ports. Currently, the port faces economic "headwinds" in its efforts to remain selfsustaining, according to the press release. The Port's facilities and infrastructure require constant maintenance and upgrade to continue in its areas of specialization at a time when local, state and federal resources are harder to rely upon. The mayor's office warned the "headwinds" have gained strength and could affect the current "renaissance" along Pensacola's waterfront, throughout the downtown and even in surrounding neighborhoods. The city staff began working on the "Portside Vision and Reinvestment Strategy" earlier this year. Maintaining and upgrading the Port to strengthen trade and commerce is paramount, Spencer said. Encouraging discussion around the Port is the natural next step as Pensacola's waterfront and downtown area undergo revitalization. "I have been in public meetings encouraging colleagues and all citizens to think more broadly and think of this idea as how can we best use these 50 acres on Pensacola's front porch," Spencer said. "And as the first stages of this project continue, we need to make sure we're engaging the public." A community open house has been scheduled for June 26-27 at City Hall's Hagler-Mason Conference Room, 222 W. Main St. This meeting will include a series of interactive work sessions and surveys to help collect and chan-

nel community feedback for the long-term evolution of the Port. The times have yet to be announced. The Port's planning team has created a website, portsidepensacola.com, to encourage the public to engage in the project. The website will have two online survey initiatives designed to grasp what Pensacola residents desire for the waterfront and Port. It will be updated regularly with vision plan materials and news. The DIB, Gulf Power, city staff and council members, as well as the Greater Pensacola Chamber, are also assisting the Portside vision and reinvestment strategy, according to City PIO Vernon Stewart. A final draft of the reinvestment strategy will be assembled in September, which will include case study research, concepts, illustrations and strategies, Stewart said. {in}

Brian Spencer / Courtesy Photo SPENCER WON'T SEEK ANOTHER TERM Pensacola City Councilman Brian

Spencer last week announced that he would not seek a third term on the council. "I remain grateful for the voters, financial supporters, campaign volunteers and friends that endorsed my pledge to represent them for the past eight years," said Spencer in a written statement sent to the newspaper. He asked those seeking to serve District 6, his district, "to recognize the unique characteristics of our downtown, the nearby vibrant and diverse neighborhoods and the valuable qualities of our historic city's edge where land meets sea." Spencer promised to stay active after he leaves office. "I will remain a tireless advocate for the preservation and renaissance of the City of Pensacola's historic districts, neighborhoods, streetscapes and buildings," he said. "I will continue to strongly promote the importance of sound urban planning principles that recognize a vibrant downtown as an essential ingredient for a sustainable city and its surrounding metro area. "

QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR WATER LINGER A recent Inweekly article has

resurfaced concerns over the area's drinking water. Ann Hill, who is running for City Council, District 6, held a town hall meeting to discuss the issue on June 13 at the E.S. Cobb Resource Center. ECUA declined an invitation to participate in this panel discussion because of pending litigation regarding chemicals in the drinking water. However, Dr. Larry 010 1

Pensacola has 28 sand-and-gravel aquifers, which release eight billion gallons of water a year, Walker said. The ECUA serves about 91,500 residents and about 8,800 commercial businesses. "ECUA carefully monitors all of its water from each of its wells," he said. "And we ourselves think that the water quality testing serves a very important function and a very important responsibility, and we conduct far more water quality tests than is required." Walker spent time explaining how many aquifers the area has and how the water is tested regularly. He said ECUA conducts over 25,000 tests each year, which is much higher than most areas, while the water contamination levels are very low for the area. Inweekly reporter Joe Baucum participated in the town hall panel discussion via Skype. He said the tricky part about testing water is there are harmful chemicals floating around that are not considered illegal by federal or state standards, such as PFCs (Perfluorochemicals), which were discussed in his article (Inweekly, "Pensacola's Drinking Water Questioned Again," May 31). PFCs are chemicals found in household and industrial products such as stain repellents, lubricants, firefighting foam and pesticides. PFCs, when consumed in surplus, can be harmful to people. "I first heard concerns about these contaminates about 10 years ago," Walker said. "And I immediately discussed the matter with my executive director to see what the staff was doing about it. ECUA began testing for PFCs in 2006, three years before the first time we were required to test for it by EPA." He continued, "Our most recent testing was in 2016, and we tested all of our active wells, which was 28 at that time, and we found detectable levels of PFCs in three wells. All three of these wells were near airfields. We strongly suspect that the culprit was the firefighting foam that contained an ingredient that produced PFC." Walker offered no strong solutions to fix the chemical problem in the water, but

he insisted the contaminate levels were consistently low. However, ECUA has recently filed a lawsuit to recover costs related to treatment and removal of such chemical compounds. Dr. Enid Sisskin, a UWF professor of Environmental Health, challenged the problems officials refuse to discuss. She also proposed questions, which are still floundering for answers. Sisskin confirmed that the city does have low levels of contaminants in the water. However, this does not shield it from chemical byproducts. "What are the effects of all of these 'well below regulatory amounts of chemicals?'" she asked. "For example, ECUA does not test for pharmaceuticals in the water. What are the effects of these lowlevel chemicals if we continue to drink them? We don't know." The speakers encouraged the community to get involved. Sisskin said, "Bottom line: what we don't know now is way more concerning than what we do know."

GARDEN DISTRICT COTTAGES ParsCo, LLC and its development entity, Encore Investment Company, LLC (Encore), have completed the closing on the former Blount School property with the City of Pensacola on May 25, nearly one year after the Pensacola City Council approved selling the site to ParsCo. The project has been renamed "Garden District Cottages" and is currently completing the final permit drawings/designs for construction. The project will be completed in three phases and will include six homes that will be specifically set aside for the city's affordable housing incentive program with a sales price not to exceed $189,000. The corner lots have been combined into double lots, so the total count of new homes will be 26 with 20 of the new homes sold at market rate. Four different floor plans with six exterior designs will be offered. Encore is also finalizing site utility design considerations that include relocation of existing AT&T fiber/overhead service and working to accommodate ECUA requests to existing infrastructure surrounding the city block. Once the front-end design work and utility considerations are completed, Encore and Voyage Real Estate will begin marketing and completing the sales for Phase 1. Additionally, a new model corner lot home will be constructed to serve as an on-site sales center. The Escambia County School District closed the Blount Middle School in 1982.

There was an attempt to convert one of the buildings into low-cost apartments for the elderly, but that went nowhere. In August 2011, Mayor Hayward announced that the city would buy and demolish the school. To help fund the demolition, Escambia County contributed $200,000 in Community Development Block Grant dollars toward the project's total cost of $466,700. It has sat dormant since the demolition was completed in late 2012.

TRIUMPH BOARD AWARDS MORE GRANTS Last week, Triumph Gulf Coast's

board of directors unanimously voted on final approval of a $10 million grant agreement with the Port of Panama City for a major expansion of port capacity at the new East Terminal facility. The project will support over 140 direct high-wage jobs at the port and more than 250 additional port-dependent manufacturing and distribution jobs. "We are honored to be the first recipient of funding from Triumph Gulf Coast and are committed to delivering significant economic benefits to the region with our port expansion project," said Wayne Stubbs, executive director of the Panama City Port Authority.

"We are honored to be the first recipient of funding from Triumph Gulf Coast and are committed to delivering significant economic benefits to the region with our port expansion project." Wayne Stubbs The Board also agreed to move to the contract phase with Escambia and Wakulla School Districts. In the Escambia School District, 1,145 high school and college students are projected to earn industry certifications and be prepared for high-paying jobs in the IT/Cybersecurity, Advanced Manufacturing, and Aviation/ Aerospace industries by 2024 using a $3 million Triumph grant. The contract will include a "clawback" provision, as required under the Triumph legislation, to set performance benchmarks the grant must meet or else it would have to be paid back. Dr. Rick Harper, Triumph staff economist, admitted to the board that such clauses are rare for school districts, but he felt an agreement with the district, University inweekly.net

Haney Technical Center in Bay County to modernize its 40-year-old HVAC training program. The Triumph Board added a pilot program to the project requiring Haney to offer skills upgrade training to graduates using the new equipment and certification programs. The grant request is for $615,000. The board was impressed with the City of Pensacola's $130 million application to help fund the construction of a $200 million aircraft maintenance campus at the Pensacola International Airport. Harper said the project has the potential to bring up to 4,000 aircraft maintenance jobs. The city was told to come back with more investors to reduce the request from Triumph. The proposed new sports arena didn't fare as well. Few board members appeared to be inclined to spend Triumph dollars on sports complexes. However, the board voted to form sub-groups for sports and other industries that will hold hearings and develop criteria to evaluate the applications. Under the terms of Florida's settlement with BP, the oil company has already deposited $300 million in Triumph Gulf Coast. Further payments of approximately $80 million a year will be made from 2019 through 2033, amounting to a total of $1.5 billion. Triumph Gulf Coast's board of directors is appointed by the governor, chief financial officer, attorney general and presiding officers of the Legislature. The appointees to the Triumph Board are Allan Bense, Stan Connally, Jr, Dr. Pam Dana, Chair Don Gaetz, Ben Lee, Stephen Riggs, June 21, 2018

MORSE RESIGNS On June 12, Downtown Improvement Board (DIB) Executive Director Curt Morse announced his resignation. Morse took over the DIB in November 2016. He took on several unpopular issues while he held the position, including panhandling and the reorganizing of downtown parking. Morse will be best remembered for the DIB ambassadors program that he launched with Pathways for Change last year. The ambassadors keep downtown sidewalks and streets clean on a daily basis. In a letter to the DIB, Morse thanked the board of the opportunity. He said, "I have enjoyed working for the agency and serving the businesses and property owners of downtown and appreciate the support provided me during my tenure with the organization." Following the board meeting, an offer was extended to Lissa Dees, who served the DIB from 2014 to April 2018, for the position of interim executive director beginning June 18. BAY CRUISES START FRIDAY The

The two double-decker catamaran ferry boats will begin service on Friday, June 22. "We're excited to start working with Gulf Coast Maritime Services, Inc. and begin the Pensacola Bay Cruises service," said Superintendent Dan Brown.

Dan Brown All-day, hop-on, hop-off ferry tickets will cost $20 for adults and will include admission to the Gulf Islands National Seashore, which normally costs between $10 and $20 itself. Children's tickets will be $13, with discounted tickets for active duty military and seniors offered for $18.50. Children under 2 will ride free. In 1978, Gulf Islands National Seashore's original General Management Plan called for the establishment of a ferry service in Pensacola Bay. books WELL, THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY: MEMOIRS AND MISTAKES OF AN ACCIDENTAL ACTIVIST

By Franchesca Ramsey You might know Franchesca Ramsey from MTV's "Decoded" or her YouTube hit "What White Girls Say…to Black Girls," but if you don’t, please allow us (and this collection of essays) to introduce you to one our favorite online activists. In the book, she talks about the highs and lows of internet "fame" and shares lessons she learned along the way.

THE AWKWARD AGE

By Francesca Segal How do adults handle falling in love when they have teenage kids? It's complicated. "The Awkward Age" follows the story of the new kind of modern family and all of the good and bad things in between. If your nightstand looks anything like ours, chances are there might be a book or two (or more) from last year's reading list that's still waiting to be cracked open. That's OK. You still have the whole summer ahead of you. Here's a few new picks to add to the top of the pile.

—out now— CALYPSO

By David Sedaris The short story king is back and we couldn't be more thrilled, especially since this collection is being billed as a "beach read for people who detest beaches."

THE ENSEMBLE

By Aja Gabel Gabel's debut novel explores the lives and relationships of four friends navigating the world of classical music and it's already gotten some praise and been described as "pitch-perfect."

ON CHESIL BEACH

By Ian McEwan Set in England in the early 1960s, a young couple celebrates their wedding. But as the night continues, the pressures of the euphemistic wedding night become more apparent and ultimately change the characters forever. The movie, starring Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle, was released in select theaters in May.

DON'T WORRY, HE WON'T GET FAR ON FOOT: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A DANGEROUS MAN

By John Callahan Gus Van Sant is making a movie about 414 1

DO THIS FOR ME

By Eliza Kennedy When a high-powered attorney with a picture-perfect life starts spinning out of control, she had to do some soul searching. Through it all, the protagonist, Raney Moore, finds herself "on a quest to understand sex, fight workplace inequality and solve the mystery of herself."

RICH PEOPLE PROBLEMS

By Kevin Kwan Kevin Kwan, bestselling author of "Crazy Rich Asians," is back with a new novel about a family driven by money, a jealous ex-wife and the heir to one of Asia's greatest fortunes locked out of his inheritance. And don't forget to catch Kwan's "Crazy Rich Asians" on the big screen Aug. 15.

THE WORLD AS IT IS

By Ben Rhodes Ben Rhodes, aide to President Barack Obama, shares his account of working in the White House and gives a record of Obama's

Callahan, who was involved in a car crash that left him paralyzed. Instead of giving up, he became a cartoonist. In theaters July 13.

BLACK KLANSMAN

By Ron Stallworth In this amazing true story set in the 1970s, Ron Stallworth becomes the first AfricanAmerican detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. The task he gives himself? Take down the Ku Klux Klan. The movie stars John David Washington and Adam Driver and is directed by Spike Lee. In theaters Aug. 10.

RAW: MY JOURNEY INTO THE WU-TANG

By Samantha Irby Most are familiar with Samantha Irby's hilarious essays from last year's "We Are Never Meeting in Real Life." But you may have forgotten her first book, which is why it was re-released recently, much to the delight of her new fans.

By Mark and Jay Duplass Brothers and filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass have been a part of tons of TV and movie projects that have made you laugh or cry (or both). In this memoir, they share their secrets to success and advice they've had to learn the hard way.

MOTHER AMERICAN NIGHT

By John Perry Barlow and Robert Greenfield "Mother American Night" follows the truelife story of Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow, who died earlier this year. Born into a powerful political family, Barlow was part rock star and part political consultant, working on both sides of the aisle before he became an internet guru and co-founded Electronic Frontier Foundation.

MY GIRLS: A LIFETIME WITH CARRIE AND DEBBIE

JULIET, NAKED

By Nick Hornby Another Nick Hornby tale about music and relationships is about to become a movie, and we are pretty sure it's going to be good. But we all need to read the book first just to make sure. In theaters Aug. 17.

FIRST MAN

By James R. Hansen The life of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, is surely an interesting one. Ryan Gosling is set to play him in the movie adaptation. In theaters Oct. 12.

By Dana Schwartz Part-memoir, part personality quiz, this book is pretty much Dana Schwartz's Twitter account fleshed out. And given that we laugh at her tweets daily, we think that sounds like more than enough reason to read it.

By Lamont "U-God" Hawkins U-God has been with Wu-Tang since the beginning, so this book tells the full story of the iconic group and, really, hip-hop in general. It’s a must-read for anyone who considers themselves a fan on any level.

What's summer with a summer blockbuster (or 12)?

another Marvel mega hit just waiting to rule the summer.

June 22

BLEEDING STEEL

THE CATCHER WAS A SPY

A not-so-classic sports movie about a major league baseball catcher who leads a double life as a WWII spy. It stars Paul Rudd, Jeff Daniels, Mark Strong and Sienna Miller.

JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM

No surprises here—just another dino movie starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Jeff Goldblum, B.D. Wong and Justice Smith. Long story short, dinosaurs take over after the destruction of the Jurassic World theme park.

UNDER THE SILVER LAKE

A strange sort of love story about a boy who meets a beautiful woman only to discover she has totally disappeared the following morning. The boy, Sam, sets out to uncover the reasoning for her vanishing. Starring Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough and Topher Grace, this movie is a summer must-see in our book.

June 29

LEAVE NO TRACE

An interesting story about a father-daughter duo that lived in Forest Park near Portland, Oregon, until one day they are discovered by the authorities and are forced to find a new place to call home.

SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO The best things about the first "Sicario"—Emily Blunt and the director Denis Villeneuve— are gone. But Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro still make this worth seeing.

WOMAN WALKS AHEAD

Finally, something about Native Americans on the big screen! The film follows a painter who becomes a Native American activist after completing a portrait of Sitting Bull and how she has to defend the rights of the Native Americans against an Army officer. July 4

THE FIRST PURGE

Similar to other "Purges," but it's not another sequel. It's a prequel—meaning it tells the story of the very beginning, how it all started and what happened that initial go around.

July 6

SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

Boots Riley's writing-directing debut stars "Get Out" breakout Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson, and we are dying to see it, mostly because of Stanfield but also because it looks straight-up crazy (in a good way).

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP

Paul Rudd strikes again, in what is sure to be another action packed movie that will inevitably lead him to battle some enemy to save him and the ones he loves. Throw in Evangeline Lilly as The Wasp, and you've got June 21, 2018

Jackie Chan is back and is playing a cop? OK, that sounds fun. So does Chan blowing up houses, shooting bad guys and making Hong Kong a safer place—all of which you get in "Bleeding Steel."

July 7

HEART BEATS LOUD

The latest from filmmaker (and Pensacola native) Brett Haley is finally set to open locally and we're pretty damn excited. But how can you not be excited about a movie starting Nick Offerman and made by a hometown boy?

July 13

DON'T WORRY, HE WON'T GET FAR ON FOOT

Another of our must-see picks, this movie is based on the memoir of cartoonist and quadriplegic John Callahan. It features an all-star cast—Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara and Jonah Hill—and is directed by the brilliant Gus Van Sant.

EIGHTH GRADE

So apparently Bo Burnham isn't just a comedian/actor; he's also a writer/director. He created this film about a girl who creates internet videos to survive middle school, and it's already being praised as the next "Lady Bird."

SKYSCRAPER

In this action movie, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson plays a former F.B.I. officer who now assesses security footage for skyscrapers. He's out on a mission when the tallest skyscraper in China is set ablaze, and Johnson must figure out who did it and save his family.

SHOCK AND AWE

Woody Harrelson and James Marsden play journalists who question the Bush administration's reasons for going to war with Saddam Hussein.

July 20

MAMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN

Meryl Streep is back for the true blockbuster of the summer (in our completely biased opinion). If you still haven't seen the first one, get on it. This sequel continues the themes of Greece, music and comedy, while adding Lily James and Cher to the mix.

BLINDSPOTTING

Just like "Sorry to Bother You," this movie is set in Oakland and uses satire to deal with heavy race related topics. In it, Daveed Diggs (of "Hamilton" fame) plays a guy who sees a white cop shoot a black civilian.

July 27

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE-FALLOUT Because nothing says summer like a Tom Cruise thriller about trying to beat the clock.

TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES

The Cartoon Network series makes the leap to the big screen with Will Arnett and Kristen Bell lending their voices.

Aug. 3

CHRISTOPHER ROBIN

If you haven't seen the trailer for this movie yet, go do that right now. It's a tearjerker for sure, and we can't wait to see the classic Winnie-the-Pooh characters come together to help an adult Christopher Robin.

THE DARKEST MINDS

Remember that one episode of "Stranger Things" when Eleven finds that girl who also has mind powers? Yeah, this is basically a movie version of that episode, meaning fans will either love it or think it's a total rip-off.

THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST

Chloë Grace Moretz plays a teenager sent to a center for gay conversion therapy. Already racking up good reviews and acclaim, this movie won the top United States dramatic competition prize at Sundance earlier this year.

SEARCHING

John Cho playing a dad might make you feel old. But you'll probably forget about that once you get caught up in the mystery of his daughter's disappearance and how he uses social media to find clues.

THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME

Thankfully, female led comedies are becoming more and more common. We just hope this one, staring Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon, is better than McKinnon's last ("Rough Night").

Aug. 10

BLACKKKLANSMAN

This is film co-written and directed by Spike Lee and is about an African-American detective who infiltrated the KKK. It's based on the book "Black Klansman" by Ron Stallworth.

Aug. 17

CRAZY RICH ASIANS

A movie about Asians, staring Asians, directed by an Asian. See Hollywood, that really wasn't that difficult, was it?

THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS

Brian Henson is into puppets, just like his dad Jim, but in a slightly darker, more dramatic, way. In his movie, the puppets get murdered, and we have to figure out who would do such a terrible thing.

JULIET, NAKED

Nick Hornby. Ethan Hawke. Rose Byrne. Chris O'Dowd. Yeah, we are totally in for this for this one.

Aug. 24

THE BOOKSHOP

Calling all bibliophiles, this one is for you. It's about a widow who opens a bookstore in 1959 and quickly learns not everybody is ready for "intense" reads.

SLENDER MAN

A horror movie inspired by the character Slender Man, who was actually supposed to be funny at first.

15

news of the weird WAIT, WHAT? Visitors to Merlion Park in Singapore on June 8 were startled to see Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump enjoying a casual walkabout, hand-in-hand. On closer inspection, however, they would have seen the two men were Howard X, a Kim impersonator, and Dennis Alan, a Trump impersonator, who traveled to Singapore in advance of the June 12 summit meeting between the two real leaders. Janette Warokka of Indonesia was fooled: "It's so shocking for me. I don't know why those two famous guys come here," she told the Associated Press. Airport officials were less amused when Kim's doppelganger, whose real name is Lee Howard Ho Wun, arrived at Changi Airport. Wun said police officers searched his bags and detained him for two hours before releasing him with stern warnings to stay away from the summit. Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said Wun was interviewed for about 45 minutes. THE LITIGIOUS SOCIETY If you've ordered a Quarter Pounder recently and specified "no cheese," you may be interested in a $5 million class-action lawsuit brought against McDonald's on May 8 by Cynthia Kissner of Broward County, Florida, and Leonard Werner of Miami-Dade. According to the Miami Herald, the two are angry that they've been paying for cheese even though they ordered their sandwiches without it. The lawsuit contends "customers ... continue to be overcharged for these products, by being forced to pay for two slices of cheese, which they do not want, order or receive." Also, Kissner and Werner "have suffered injury as a result of their purchases because they were overcharged" and "McDonald's is being unjustly enriched by these practices." While attorney Andrew Lavin admits the mobile app ordering option does offer a Quarter Pounder without cheese, he notes in-store customers have no such choice. ARMED AND CLUMSY Things got wild on June 2 at Mile High Spirits and Distillery in Denver when an unnamed off-duty FBI agent accidentally shot patron Tom Reddington, 24, in the lower leg. According to the Denver Post, the agent was dancing and did a backflip, which caused his firearm to come out of its holster and fall to the floor. When he bent to pick up the gun, it discharged. "I heard a loud bang," Reddington said, "and I thought some idiot set off a firecracker. All of a sudden, from the knee down became completely red, and that's when it clicked in my head, 'Oh, I've been shot.'" A man at the bar applied a tourniquet to Reddington's leg. The FBI agent was taken to Denver police headquarters and released to an FBI supervisor. Mile High Spirits has promised "complimentary drinks forever" to Reddington.

SWEET REVENGE In a bid to unseat his boss, Bon Homme County, South Dakota, Deputy Sheriff Mark Maggs thrashed Sheriff Lenny Gramkow in the June 5 Republican primary by a vote of 878 to 331. So Sheriff Gramkow didn't waste any time: Less than a minute after the polls closed, he fired Maggs, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. "As of this moment you are no longer an employee of Bon Homme County," Maggs' termination notice read. Maggs, a 31-year-old father of four, will not become sheriff until January, but he is confident the county commission "will stand with my family ... and insure that my family will not be left hanging without an income or insurance," Maggs said. "We're going to be fine." JUST SAY NO On June 2, as two Jackson County, Oregon, sheriff's deputies waited for a tow truck to remove a 2003 Toyota Camry from the side of a road, 23-year-old Anthony J. Clark, of Grants Pass, walked up to the car and told the deputies he was going to steal it. He then got into the car and drove off, leading officers on a 40-mile chase through Ashland, Talent and Phoenix, Oregon, crashing into fences and driving the wrong way on several roads. When officers finally stopped the car, The Oregonian reported, Clark ran into a mobile home park, where he was arrested trying to steal another car. The deputies reported Clark admitted taking LSD and said he thought he was inside a real-life version of the "Grand Theft Auto" video game. Among other charges, Clark was accused of driving under the influence of intoxicants and seconddegree criminal mischief. YOU THINK YOUR JOB IS BAD? Car salesman Brett Bland in League City, Texas, finally had enough and filed a lawsuit in May against his employer, AutoNation Acura Gulf Freeway, and Jeremy Pratt, a co-worker. Pratt, the suit alleges, engaged in "constant taunting ... making extremely crass, vulgar and rude comments" and "reinforced dominance over his subordinates by regularly entering their enclosed offices, intentionally passing gas and then laughing," as well as "pinching and touching his male subordinates' nipples." KPRC-TV reported Pratt was fired after sending a text to everyone at the dealership alleging Bland was a sex offender (which he is not). After the firing, however, Bland's lawsuit alleges, AutoNation allowed Pratt to "loiter at the dealership" and continue harassing employees, and Bland was threatened with termination if he didn't sell eight vehicles a month. Bland seeks damages and court costs. {in}
