Clay Ingram The Winner & Losers staff recommends these individuals to be people to watch in 2016.

CLAY INGRAM A year ago, the state rep-

resentative was named CEO of the Greater Pensacola Chamber. With the legislature adjourning early and having two special sessions, Ingram has had to split time between Tallahassee and Pensacola. We hope that 2016 will be calmer for his sake and the chamber’s.

CHARLES BARE The last at-large city councilman now has the reins of power as the 2014-15 council president. His council seat will be eliminated at the end of 2016.

These facts provide a nearly infinite number of political possibilities in the upcoming year.

GREG EVERS The state senator, like Bare, has quite a few political options. More than likely, his district boundaries will be redrawn, cutting him out of District 1. Will he move to Santa Rosa County to maintain his seat, or will he run for Santa Rosa County sheriff? Don’t expect an answer until after the 2016 Legislative Session.

DIANE MACK The former Pensacola City Councilwoman founded The Institute for Women in Politics of Northwest Florida in 2013. Its purpose is to increase the number of women serving in elected office in Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties.

Mack will have her hands full next year.

RON MCNESBY By far, the most intriguing political candidate is Ron McNesby who is running for Escambia County Sheriff,

an office he lost in 2008 to David Morgan despite having nearly $100,000 left in his campaign account. The political debates should be fun.

MELANIE NICHOLS As president of the North Hill Preservation Association, she fought probation offices, radio towers and Pensacola City Hall. We don’t expect her to slow down in 2016.

ERIC OLSON Hayward’s fourth city administrator never got a honeymoon.

Some of his problems are self-inflicted wounds; others are due to lack of municipal experience. The biggest issue may be that Pensacola City Hall was staffed to be run by former Chief Operations Officer Tamara Fountain, not him.

GROVER ROBINSON The three-term Escambia County commissioner has his sights set on higher office. It will be interesting to see how he leverages the board chairmanship to his political advantage. He may have a difficult time winning over his fellow commissioners if he is not careful.

CHIP SIMMONS The former Pensacola Police Chief has agreed to right the ship at the Escambia County Jail after the dismissal of Corrections Director Michael Tidwell. Assistant County Administrator Simmons will have his hands full figuring out how the medical services at the jail have fallen apart.

ONE MORE LIST This past year was filled with surprises.

As we have for the past 17 years, Inweekly reported on each. Here are my highlights of 2015:

BIGGEST LETDOWN:

Maritime Park Development We opened the year with news that the city’s real estate agent was bringing to the table a developer, a joint venture between the Miami-based companies Munilla Construction Management and Bermelllo Ajamil & Partners, Inc., that wanted to invest $65 million in a 120-room hotel and 200 luxury apartments at the park. The Studers later offered to spend $20 million on the UWF Center for Entrepreneurship and a conference center. By the end of July, both deals had fallen apart, but the Pensacola City Council did approve a nifty template for future leases.

MOST CHALLENGING COVER STORY: “Fighting to be Heard” In March, I interviewed a dozen deaf Pensacolians with the help of a certified sign language interpreter. For two hours, I listened to their stories of dealing with a criminal justice system that often misunderstands them as they try to communicate. The resulting article gave a unique view into their world.

BIGGEST SCOOP:

Newpoint Academy Scandal In late March, a whistleblower contacted Escambia School Board member Jeff Bergosh and me with allegations that

teachers at the “A” charter school had tampered with grades. Frustrated that Superintendent Malcolm Thomas failed to act on her complaints, she turned to Bergosh and Inweekly for help. Newpoint Education Partners is under investigation and has closed its three Pensacola charter schools.

BIGGEST FIGHT FOR SUNSHINE:

Olson’s Banning Federal Emails In the wake of his botched effort to punish the president of the North Hill Preservation Association, City Administrator Eric Olson ordered all city employees to refuse to answer requests received from federal email accounts. Inweekly filed a complaint with State Attorney Bill Eddins. The state attorney agreed with the newspaper that any policy that restricted an individual’s ability to request public records could constitute a possible violation of the law.

BIGGEST SHOCK:

Death of Rodney Berry Since November 2014, six deaths occurred in the Escambia County Jail, three of which were suicides. When Berry died in May, the county commissioners and public were told that he was found unresponsive in his cell. Six months later, Inweekly found that he died after vomiting and defecating on himself for nearly six hours. Inmates and guards begged the medical staff for help, but were ignored. Our story became the catalyst for the county commission to demand changes in the jail. {in} rick@inweekly.net

Gibson said that the similarities were not coincidental.

Gibson compared the man in Roark’s photo with an authenticated photo booth photograph of Robert Johnson. The forehead shape, eyebrow placement, and size, and the junction between the nose and forehead were identical in both photos, as were the facial width, the cheek structure, and the length of the noses. Both individuals possessed a left eye that was significantly smaller than the right eye.

She created transparencies of the photographs and placed one on top of the other. The faces aligned almost identically.

The forensic expert was excited about the discovery. She talked about the importance of Robert Johnson to our musical heritage.

“Robert Johnson was so important that his people recorded him at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, some white guys, so he made them run the wires from his room so he could be in this room alone with these guys in the other room with wires ran to him and just play his music,” said Gibson.

Roark hopes that the photograph can be used to earn Pensacola, particularly the Belmont-Devilliers Historic District, a marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail. Created by the Mississippi Blues Commission in 2006, the trail has markers at the most notable historical sites related to the birth, growth and influence of the blues throughout the state of Mississippi and beyond. There are 14 Mississippi Blues Trail markers outside of the state, including one in Tallahassee.

“We deserve it more than anybody, probably,” said Roark.

One missing clue that could cement the deal is identifying where Johnson, Craft, Coleman and Lockwood were sitting in the photograph. Roark hopes that someone might come forward with that bit of information.

“I really hope we can find that there's someone alive and might recognize the setting that's in the picture,” said Roark. “If we could locate the setting in one of these venues, I think that would establish beyond all doubt that Johnson has been here.”{in}

SCARY TRENDS FOR 2016

By Rick Outzen A global recession and the “Last World War” could be on the horizon, according to renowned trends forecaster Gerald Celente.

Over the years, Celente, CEO of The Trends Research Institute, has predicted correctly the 1987 stock market crash, the fall of the Soviet Union, the dot.com bubble burst and the subprime mortgage crisis. His basic premise is that current events form future trends. The lack of a political agenda makes his forecasts so compelling.

“I don't take a position in politics,” Celente tells interviewers. “I'm a political atheist.”

Inweekly became a Celente follower after he wrote in late 2007 that the nation should expect a recession and labeled the collapse of the financial markets as the "Panic of '08."

Celente predicted, "The Category 1 financial storm that hit the global markets in January would reach Katrina strength by September, obliterating a succession of the nation's august financial institutions."

In September 2008, we saw Bear Stearns, Countrywide, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, A.I.G, Wachovia and Washington Mutual either go bankrupt, get bailed out, gobbled up or busted up.

Before the Christmas holidays, Celente appeared on News Talk 1370 WCOA’s “Pensacola Speaks,” to discuss his forecasts for 2016.

IN: The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates 25 basis points. What does that mean for the coming year?

Celente: It means a lot of things, because all things are tied together. When we look at trends, it's not all economics; it's geopolitics, it's social ... so let's look at it from different levels.

Who would have believed that back in June of 2014, when oil was selling at $115 a barrel, it would be selling for $37 now?

Who would believe that iron ore, that was going, in 2011, for almost $200 a metric ton, would be selling for under $40?

Along the line, up and down; whether it's raw materials, or grains, or soybeans, whatever it might be ... with the exception of two, all of the commodities are down, according to the Bloomberg Index, to 1999 levels.

Now you're raising interest rates. That hurts all of these emerging markets that are rich in natural resources, which borrowed all this money when they had this game called 'quantitative easing.'

All that dough was flowing into these emerging markets. It was coming in there for free, so they really built up a huge debt bubble. The debt bubble that we have now, beginning with quantitative easing worldwide, is at $220 trillion.

I'm going to get tougher than you! I'm going to build a navy, bigger ... build more ships!"

She's also going to build more missiles and aim them at Russia.

I'm saying to myself, "She’s going to be busy with all this building." You know?

We're all talking war, and that's what we fear the most; because it's going to be the war that Albert Einstein, when they asked him, "How will The Third World War be fought?"

He said, "I don't know, but I do know The Fourth World War will be fought with sticks and stones."

No one is talking about peace; and no one is talking about who created the conditions for, quote: 'radicalism.'

You know? We've been around a long time; you can read our information, it's there. You go back to Bill Clinton, actually. People forget this: He was bombing Iraq on, basically, a weekly basis ... A no-fly zone.

Then it went into the Bosnian War. Then George Bush began with the Iraq War ... Then the Afghan War, then the Iraq War. Then Obama, "Assad has to go. Gaddafi has to go."

Now they're destroying Yemen. If you were a young guy living in, let's say, Iraq ... A million people dead, everybody you love is gone, you got no future, you're country's destroyed ... Gee, you think you'd turn radical?

What they're doing is, by more of these wars, they're not solving the problem; so we're very concerned about that.

This series of stories celebrates Pensacola’s 1st generation and the legacy of contributions they started.

Langley & Minnie Bell

THE

FAMILY

The Bell family tree was planted in Escambia County early in the 19th century. Gamaliel was a cattleman, and Owen Avery was a stevedore and yard master for the railroad. Madison Langley Bell, Sr. was born in 1890 and, following military service in World War I, became assistant clerk of the court. In 1926, he was elected Clerk of the Court in Escambia County and served in that role until 1966, a time in office that may never be approached.

Langley (he was always known by his middle name) married Minnie Wilbur Reed, whose father was an early naval aviator who became a weather analyst and an international balloon racer.

Langley and Minnie had two sons, Madison Langley, Jr. (Bill) and William Reed, both of whom made an impact in the community during their lifetimes, spanning the 1920’s until recently.

Bill became a dentist and managed the family’s agricultural interests, and Reed became a pediatrician and helped found Children’s Hospital.

Minnie Reed Bell Langley and Minnie were frugal people. They saved money to acquire 1,440 acres of land in mid-county and became deeply interested in agriculture, a practice which would be followed by their sons. Over the years, land owned by the Bells was gifted to provide a beginning for a 4-H Club and sold to erect the Langley Bell 4-H Center, a welcome station, and most recently a commercial job-creating development.

Langley demonstrated his love of people in many ways. He served with the LIONS Club and YMCA, influenced placement of a Tuberculosis Center here in 1933, and later worked to convert the sanitarium to the Escambia County Hospital. In the 1950s, Langley helped place the Crippled Children’s Home next to Baptist Hospital.

When his life ended at seventy-six, there were countless numbers who were saddened, for Langley Bell, Sr. had made good things happen that continue to be seen for generations.

Our community has benefited greatly from Langley and Minnie Bell. Their contributions and commitment to Pensacola inspired their children to raise families and build careers here, and new generations of difference makers continue the Bell Family’s long tradition of volunteerism and public service.

Painting His Way through National Parks

Courtesy Photo Completing 409 paintings in 365 days— it’s probably as difficult as it sounds, but Pensacola artist Loren Miller plans to find out for himself at the start of the new year. His project, “American Canvas,” is a massive endeavor in which he plans

to create a painting of each of the 409 National Park Service Units in one year to commemorate the 100th year anniversary.

“It calculates to roughly 1.12 paintings per day, including weekends and holidays,” Miller said. “I'll be relying on people all

across the nation to help provide inspiration and reference to the many Park Service Units I could not possibly visit.”

Miller is from Jay and began drawing and painting in high school. He attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and later Florida State University. He has been painting for about eight years and opened his art studio, Koa Studio, in May and has been working as a full-time artist since then.

Between portrait sittings, art classes, and tattoo sessions, Miller has started a Kickstarter campaign aimed at raising enough support to allow him to undertake his ambitious year-long art project in 2016.

“Of course the largest obstacle is the amount of painting I'll have to do in one year,” Miller said. “A total of 409 paintings in 365 days is quite a task.

If the project is funded, I'll be able to devote all of my time to the project and not have to worry about working other jobs to pay for studio rent.”

Miller said that he has a great team of people that will be assisting in the creation of the prints and, most importantly, the final book.

“Needless to say, I'll be a busy man, but this is something I am very passionate about,” he said.

Miller said that he grew up in a family that instilled a deep love and appreciation for the outdoors. Once he learned to paint in college, he began to combine his love

of hiking and painting by creating outdoor landscape paintings.

“I've always loved the outdoors, and Gulf Islands National Seashore has been a constant source of inspiration for my landscape artwork,” Miller said. “One evening I was talking with my good friend Tim Roberts about my paintings and upcoming painting trip to Grand Teton National Park, when we got into a discussion about the history of the NPS.”

Roberts is a professional consulting historian with 321Innovations and has worked with the National Park Service many times during his career.

“I discovered that other than the 59 National Parks, there are actually 350 other National Park Service units, including historic sites, monuments, parkways, battlefields, recreation areas, seashores and more,” Miller said. “All of these units are

Miller said that he and Roberts came up with a plan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the NPS by highlighting every single NPS unit, which later became ‘American Canvas."

“During the last year, I have been involved with a number of projects related to the upcoming Centennial celebration but never saw any projects that were looking to encompass all of the units,” Roberts said.

“Loren’s artistic ability is amazing, and the idea of him working with people all over the country to capture the essence of so many special places on canvas just seemed like a worthwhile way to celebrate America’s Best Idea.”

Miller will travel to as many units as his budget allows but said that the rest depends on fellow National Park enthusiasts across the nation to be his eyes in the parks that he cannot get to. He said that most every park he’s contacted has been more than gracious in sending photo references of their parks.

“The amount of traveling I'll be able to do will depend entirely on how much money we raise,” he said. “Initially, I was worried about getting reference photos for the parks that I cannot visit. After talking to many parks and discovering their enthusiasm in helping contribute to our effort, that fear has since disappeared.”

Miller said that the most challenging part will be the amount of painting involved.

“Our plans are to spend some time exhibiting all of the paintings in various

museums and galleries, to help raise awareness of the National Park Service,” Miller said. “After that, we plan on working with each park to sell the paintings, with part of the proceeds going to that specific park.”

Miller said that his goal is to raise $35,000, which the largest bulk of will go toward supplies for paints, canvases, brushes and any other materials needed to create the paintings. He said that the second part of the money will go toward the design and creation of the book, which includes scanning and editing all of the paintings, and the introductions to each park.

Miller said that the book will highlight each and every NPS unit and include information about what makes each unit so unique.

“The last part will go to paying for the studio space for me to work in,” Miller said. “Being that this will be more than a full-time job, I will not have time for any other work. I will be entirely dedicated to this project during the year. Any additional funds will go to travel expenses. The more money we raise over our minimum, the more I'll get to visit these amazing parks and paint them in person.”

“The National Park System is by far America's greatest idea, and it is my hope that with other’s help, we can celebrate it through painting in 2016,” Miller said.

news of the weird LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Even if Armageddon doesn't happen, the CEO of the massive online retailer Overstock. com believes there is a "10 to 20 percent" chance of a world financial meltdown in the next few years, and he is arranging to be back in business in the aftermath. Patrick Byrnes told the New York Post in November he has stashed away enough food in a well-fortified facility in Utah's Granite Mountain to serve his 2,000 employees for "30 to 60 days," along with several thousand other emergency preparations and $10 million in gold. But, he insisted, he's not a gun-toting "prepper"; the plan is only about tiding employees over until the Internet and banking systems are back up and running.

IRONIES Sweet: (1) As deputy leader of Scotland's South Lanarkshire Council, Jackie Burns was instrumental in the budgetary closing of all 24 public toilets in the area. In November, Burns was fined (the equivalent of about $60) after he, out on the town, could hold it in no longer and urinated in the street.

BRIGHT IDEAS China's love of beef, plus a regulation requiring that live animals imported for food be slaughtered within 55 miles of entry port, has created big business for the Australian cattle exporter Elders, which uses double-deck Boeing 747s whose only main-deck passengers "moo" instead of complain about leg room. (Business-class humans still travel upstairs.)

Without the flights, the 55-mile rule could be met only by coastal Chinese cities, thus ignoring inland gourmets demanding fresh meat. Unlike the well-fed upper-deck passengers, the cattle get minimal food—for obvious reasons.

UPDATES Following prosperous news reported here (from New York, the Czech Republic and Massachusetts), the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster of New Zealand announced on Dec. 10 that the country's official records now recognize the Church as a legal sanctioner of marriages. The Church must now nominate an "official marriage celebrant" (who will be known as "His Noodly Honour").

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS Matthew Riggins had told his girlfriend earlier that he and a pal were planning to burglarize some homes around Barefoot Bay in Brevard County, Florida, and was apparently on that mission on Nov. 23 when an alert resident called 911, and the men scrambled.

The accomplice was caught several days later, but Riggins himself did not survive the night—having taken refuge in nearby woods and drowning trying to outswim an apparently hungry 11-foot alligator.

A NEWS OF THE WEIRD CLASSIC (JANUARY 2011) Parents of the 450 pupils (aged 3-11) at Applecroft primary school in Welwyn Garden City, England, were given individualized yearbooks recently (2010) with all the children's faces obscured by black bars over the eyes (except for photos of the recipient's own children, which had no obstructions). The precautions (described by one parent as "creepy," like kids were "prisoners") were ordered by headmistress Vicky Parsley, who feared that clear photos of children would inevitably wind up in child pornography. The year before, Parsley had prohibited parents from taking photographs during school plays—of their kids or any others—for the same fear. {in}
