WADE JEFFREY The University of West Florida (UWF) biology professor earned global recognition by being named a Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS, placing him in the top 0.05% worldwide in life sciences. The platform recognizes scholars based on publication count, citations and h-index. Jeffrey, at UWF since 1991, serves as director of the Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation and the Reubin O'D. Askew Institute for Multidisciplinary Studies. As an oceanographer, Jeffrey studies bacterial function and diversity in marine environments, focusing on ultraviolet radiation effects on marine microbes. His research has taken him globally, including 15 trips to Antarctica, and he contributed significantly to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill studies following the 2010 disaster.
DERRICK BROOKS NFL Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks returned to his hometown to support O.J. Semmes Elementary School students ahead of the first day of classes. The Derrick Brooks Foundation and Derrick Brooks Charities distributed 400 backpacks, more than 250 Chromebooks and classroom supplies to the school they have supported for four years. The event featured a Pensacola Police Department cookout, bounce houses and community resources. Principal Susan Sanders noted the supplies ensure students "are ready to go on day one." Beyond materials, organizers emphasized community engagement and parent involvement as keys to educational success in Escambia County.

BEACH AIR SHOW The summer event delivered $31.5 million in economic impact to Escambia County, according to a study by Downs & St. Germain Research commissioned by Visit Pensacola. The July 9-12 event, headlined by the Blue Angels, attracted 206,500 visitors, including 124,000 unique attendees. Nearly half traveled from outside the county, with out-of-town visitors contributing $20.6 million in direct local spending. Out-of-county guests averaged 3.7-night stays, generating 31,900 room nights. The average travel party spent $1,050 during their visit, with 59% citing the air show as their primary reason for visiting the area. Santa Rosa Island Authority Executive Director Mike Burns said, "The Pensacola Beach Air Show is not just a beloved tradition, it's a powerful economic driver for our community."
Kevin Carrico and two members exchanged text messages about legislation during an Aug. 4 committee meeting, violating longstanding city guidance. City lawyers have repeatedly warned it is "never permissible" for council members to text about official business, with a 2015 memo stating such messages carry "extraordinarily high risk" of being unlawful under Florida's Sunshine Law. During the Neighborhoods Committee meeting, Chairman Mike Gay texted absent Carrico about proposed amendments to his legislation: "Are you okay with Peluso's amendment on 2025-0435?" Carrico replied: "Yup, he worked with Josh and OGC kept me in the loop." Council member Ron Salem also texted Carrico, receiving confirmation to proceed. All three maintain the texts were procedural rather than substantive policy discussions. Carrico provided the messages to council staff for the official record "to ensure full transparency." The State Attorney's Office, not city lawyers, determines whether specific communications violate the Sunshine Law.
AOL The service is pulling the plug on its dialup internet service Sept. 30. Launched in 1991, AOL had more than 20 million users in the early 2000s. By 2015, subscriptions had dropped to around 2.1 million. Census data showed at least 265,000 people in the U.S. still used dial-up in 2019. They must have been addicted to the screeching sounds of a dial-up modem.
E.J. ANTONI President Donald Trump's nominee to head the Bureau of Labor Statistics
E.J. Antoni, in an interview with Fox, discussed the possibility of suspending the bureau's monthly jobs report. The jobs report has been seen as crucial data for investors to understand the health of the U.S. economy. Last month, Trump fired Antoni's predecessor in retaliation for publishing weak jobs numbers in the bureau's monthly employment report, accusing her of manipulating the figures. There is no evidence to suggest the bureau fudged the data to make Trump appear more or less favorable. Antoni is the chief economist and the Richard F. Aster fellow at the Heritage Foundation. Economists on the left and right have questioned Antoni's qualifications.

By the time this column is published, Florida's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will have completed its review of Pensacola city operations. This unusual targeting of a municipality with fewer than 54,000 residents stands out amid a broader state initiative to scrutinize local government spending.
Florida DOGE targets typically include much larger cities like Jacksonville (population 1.01 million), Orlando (334,854) and St. Petersburg (267,102). Three theories have emerged explaining why our city drew state attention.
Political Tensions: Mayor D.C. Reeves' June endorsement of Congressman Byron Donalds for governor may have created friction with the DeSantis administration, particularly as First Lady Casey DeSantis remains a potential 2026 candidate. Reeves praised Donalds and his family as "impressive" and pledged "full support" for his gubernatorial ambitions.
University Pushback: Gov. DeSantis has faced community resistance over his University of West Florida (UWF) trustee appointments, with local groups like Save UWF challenging his university oversight. DeSantis made only one Pensacola appearance this year, defending his policies at Pensacola State College rather than UWF.
Lawmaker's Request: State Rep. Michelle Salzman directly requested local audits. However, Salzman posted on Facebook that she had asked Attorney General James Uthmeier and Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia to audit Escambia County, specifically targeting the Children's Trust and School Board. CFO Ingoglia later revealed that DOGE relies on tips from "people inside local governments" and those who are "government adjacent."
The nine-page DOGE demand letter outlines an extensive review covering eight major operational areas, with hundreds of specific document requests.
Financial Oversight: All contracts exceeding $10,000, including the controversial Baptist Hospital demolition contract, vendor selection processes and sole-source procurement justifications.
Personnel Practices: Detailed compensation analysis, particularly focusing on employees earning over $200,000 annually, overtime tracking systems and the recent Evergreen Consulting salary study that led to comprehensive payroll reform.
Ideological Programs: Diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, including all DEI training materials, costs and attendance records. "Green New Deal" activities, including electric
vehicle purchases, solar installations and emissions reduction programs.
Service Delivery: Homeless services spending, transportation infrastructure including bicycle lanes and traffic calming devices, and utility rate structures.
Grant Management: Grants received and distributed by the city, including federal partnerships and local nonprofit funding.
At his press conference Aug. 13, Mayor Reeves embraced the audit, framing it as an opportunity to showcase Pensacola's fiscal responsibility. "I fully expect that an audit team would leave here maybe using the city of Pensacola as an example of how government should be run," Reeves stated.
The mayor's formal response highlighted Pensacola's strong fiscal record: no millage rate increases since 1994, maintaining rates below both historical levels and statewide averages. While DOGE cited an $11 million property tax revenue increase over six years, Reeves noted a $20 million gap between property tax growth and necessary public safety expenditures during the same period.
Reeves stressed economic development success, including 178 commercial and 1,282 residential certificates of occupancy over five years, representing "hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment." LinkedIn recently recognized the Pensacola metro area as one of 25 fastestgrowing nationally for jobs and talent.
Meanwhile, Salzman's role evolved significantly as scrutiny mounted. She has softened her language when questioned by media.
"I would say I asked for it. I didn't necessarily say, 'I demand you're going to Pensacola,'" Salzman told WEAR-TV. "I said, 'Bro, come on out to Pensacola. Visit us. We'll take you to a Wahoos game. Let's have a good time. Check out the books; let us know what we can do better.'"
The lawmaker claimed local officials welcomed DOGE review, though her actions raise questions about coordination between Republican officials and anonymous local power brokers.
When will DOGE review Escambia County, the public school system and the Escambia Children's Trust? You have to assume County Clerk Pam Childers will urge CFO Ingoglia to review the county commissioners' work and ignore her operations.
School Superintendent Keith Leonard is confident he can document why the school board raised its capital outlay millage. But is the Children's Trust prepared to explain Pensacola Little Theatre's recent $65,651 refund?
Salzman might earn herself more headaches than accolades. Stay tuned. {in} rick@inweekly.net

It's August, and if you're an Inweekly regular, you know that means it's finally time for us to reveal the results of our annual Best of the Coast poll.
Just like we have every year for the last 24 years, we published the ballot—and thankfully, you all keep showing up, voting and telling us what you love about this city we call home.
Because of you, Best of the Coast keeps growing every year, and we couldn't be more proud of what it's become. This time around, over 15,000 votes were cast, and hundreds of local businesses got a shout-out. From small-scale makers to
food trucks to long-standing staples, this year's winners list really showcases just how much small businesses shape Pensacola. We hope you see some of your personal favorites in the mix and maybe even discover a few new places to try, too.
Of course, we're only able to produce Best of the Coast and afford our print bills because of ad dollars. So to each and every business that said yes to advertising, thank you. We couldn't make this issue, or Inweekly in general, without your support. And even this 84-page issue isn't enough, so make sure you tune in next week for Rest of the Best, where we celebrate the runners-up. {in}

A SWEET PARTY.
1449 W. Nine Mile Road, Ste. 15, asweetparty.com
What inspired you to get started? I wanted to create a space where parents could relax while their children played in a safe, calm environment. I also wanted to offer parties where parents could simply show up, be present, enjoy the moment and actually be in the photos instead of being stuck behind the scenes.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? I'm motivated by my children. Seeing the things that these little ones come in and create every day truly inspires me. I'm here to plant the seed and let their imaginations run wild, whether that's in the studio or planning their special party day.
What does being the "best" mean to you?
Showing up with genuine love in your heart and giving it your all even when it's hard. It's about creating something meaningful and making people feel seen and valued in the community. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? My next goal is to grow A Sweet Party's presence and become a go-to space for families to gather, celebrate and create memories. I want it to be a true community staple known for creativity, joy and connection.

BLAKE JONES PHOTO

What inspired you to get started? I've always had a love for photography, but I didn't give it a shot until 2010 when I attended Pensacola State College for an art degree. Once I developed my first roll of film and print in the darkroom, I was hooked.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? The joy of creating something from nothing and seeing it have an effect on others is something that is truly indescribable to me. Honestly, I love working with local businesses to create imagery for them and seeing their vision come to life.
What does being the "best" mean to you?
To me, it simply means being the person others can go to for not only hiring for a job but if someone wants to learn. Being known as the best, I think, just helps others have confidence in me if they have a question or need help.

What inspired you to get started? What inspired me to get started was my passion for helping women become confident, strong and healthy. I truly believe when women feel their best, they can live longer, show up better for their families and become the best versions of themselves. Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? What keeps me going daily is God and this amazing community of women at Coastal Fitness Training. I may lead by example, but these women push and inspire me just as much as I push and encourage them. This gym is pure love, support and strength. It's not just a gym. What does being the "best" mean to you? Creating a safe, judgement-free space where women feel loved, supported, encouraged and prayed over so they can become strong, healthy and confident. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? My personal goal is to continue in my faith and relationship with God so that I can better serve and support my members. For the gym, I'm committed to providing new equipment, technology and challenges to keep our women getting stronger and more confident year after year.

DISKO LEMONADE
120 S. Jefferson St., diskolemonade.com
What inspired you to get started? Sometimes in the yoga world, there can be pressure to be a cer-
tain way and for me, that is the opposite of what we are trying to do here. The goal is for each student to feel empowered to be themselves and feel truly welcomed at Disko.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Hearing the stories from students and teachers of what Disko means to them and how this space has supported their growth and desire for community.
What does being the "best" mean to you? Continually seeking out ways to better support our students, taking responsibility where we can and running each decision we make through our studio values system.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? We are continuing to focus on education for teachers and growth for students through our yoga teacher training programs and domestic/international retreat opportunities.

What does being the "best" mean to you?
Taking the time to understand a patient and their needs. Thinking outside the box, beyond what "big box" may have as options and truly getting to know our patients on a personal level.

LADDER TO THE STARS WELLNESS 22 N. Tarragona St., Ste. 5, laddertothestars.blog
What inspired you to get started? After seeing 20 people a day in a corporate office, I'd go home feeling like I couldn't give patients the time they deserved. With direct primary care, I get to provide proactive, holistic care to a smaller panel of patients and truly know them.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? It's the patients. So many are on a health journey. Sitting with them in the thick of it, then watching them rise remains the greatest joy of my life. I'm also the only physician here certified in Perinatal Mental Health by Postpartum Support International. I'm happy to meet that need. What does being the "best" mean to you? I was once given a one out of five stars patient review that stated: "Dr. Brooks is annoyingly meticulous." I'm grateful for the compliment. There's also something to be said for being a relatable, down-to-earth person. That's a strength I've always played to—making people feel seen, heard and comfortable.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? I'm really into building community. Many women are surviving, not thriving, so I'm hosting events for my patients to meet each other and bring friends. We need that social connection and support, and I'm up for the task of building something. Answers by: Tristan Brooks, DO, MS, PMH-C, DipABLM Family Medicine Physician
MIDTOWN VISION
400 W. Cervantes St., midtowndv.com
What inspired you to get started? When our family moved to Pensacola in 2015, I saw a huge gap in our area's healthcare. I wanted to work with a small optometric practice that put community in the center of business. Instead, I found myself developing the open, inclusive and uplifting eye care experience I wasn't finding.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? My family. I want my children to be proud of me and to create a legacy they can continue when I'm gone. I also love getting to know my patients and serving their expanding families. Watching our practice grow has been such a joy.
What does being the "best" mean to you? Being the best doesn't mean being the most suc
cessful by conventional metrics. I don't have multiple locations, and I work harder today than I did when we started. But I know my patients trust me with their families and it's an honor to have earned that trust. That's success to me. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? Professionally, I can't wait to move into our new home on Cervantes Street, where we have been renovating for the last year. Personally, I'm looking forward to rediscovering some forgotten passions that have sat on the back-burner since becoming an entrepreneur like theater, traveling and the art of relaxation.

I wanted to bring an innovative, coach-driven experience to people looking for something more than a typical gym—a place where members feel supported, challenged and excited to show up. What inspired you to get started? Our inspiration was to create a better healthcare space for both our ideal clients and our therapists—one where clients receive top-notch, one-on-one care to reach their goals quickly and efficiently, and where our staff loves the rewarding work they do without experiencing burnout that is common in the profession.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? We are motivated to continue improving the lives of our clients. Helping runners and other active adults get out of pain, move better, get stronger and reach their long-term health and fitness goals is our passion, and celebrating their accomplishments with them is what keeps us going. What does being the "best" mean to you? Delivering results and consistently showing up with care, integrity and purpose—to help our patients move, feel and live better every day. What does being the "best" mean to you? Showing up for our clients, our team and our community. It's about delivering quality work, creating a culture where people want to stay, and intentionally giving back to those in need. We are hyper-focused on ensuring that children in Escambia County are always taken care of. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
Professionally, we're focused on leveling up— bigger builds, more jobs and a greater impact locally. Personally? I still have dreams of flying with the Blue Angels. Is that too much? Maybe. But hey, aim high, right?

What inspired you to get started? I started doing hair because I realized scissors and sass were my true talents. Making people look fabulous while gossiping? Dream job. Plus, free therapy sessions and good hair … what's not to love?
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Winning best hairstylist proves dedication matters. I stay competitive but humble, focused on delivering great work and happy clients. The rest? Just background noise. Helps that I work with the best group of stylists around.
What does being the "best" mean to you? Being the best means remembering why I started. Every smile, loyal client and moment of trust matters more than any noise or spotlight. I'm just here doing what I love and proving every day that being the best is about more than skill; it's about heart. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? I've always wanted to educate and help rising stylists who share the same passion that keeps me inspired every day. You just never know what I'll do next.

What inspired you to get started? We've always dreamed of owning a small business that truly made a difference. Brett brought years of experience in the auto industry, and I came from corporate America. Together, we aimed to create a shop founded on honesty, hard work and trust—where real people assist real people, every day.

What does being the "best" mean to you? Earning our community's trust in an industry that hasn't always had the best reputation. What inspired you to get started? I've always been a storyteller, whether it was using words or images—and I absolutely love telling the story of a family's wedding through photos. The images we create matter, and it's humbling to imagine great-grandkids looking through them 75 years from now.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Technology changes and trends come and go (both in weddings and photography), but the human element doesn't change. The stories of connection and emotion are still incredibly impactful to me, and it's truly an honor to continue to document so many heirloom moments.
What does being the "best" mean to you?
Constantly evaluating your own performance and not being afraid to make changes. Our clients and their stories are the heart of what we do, and I try to make sure that all of my decisions ultimately serve their best interest.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
Content creation. In addition to photo and our traditional videography services, we launched content creation recently. This is a social media-centered service that delivers professional phone video coverage of your day, delivered within 24 hours.

It is incredibly motivating to know that our mission is working and people are connecting to the concept. What does being the "best" mean to you? GLASSY DAY STUDIO
glassydaystudio.com
What inspired you to get started? The still, small
voice. As a long-time surfer, finding and using the waste material from the board-shaping process was the perfect way to bring Glassy Day designs to life. Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Every Glassy Gal. I love seeing this jewelry in the wild. There is no better thrill. What does being the "best" mean to you? The best is such a fun way to validate and thank all those who support this business. I'm so grateful for everyone who believes in wearing jewelry shaped from recycled surfboard resin. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
The best days on the water are the ones with glassy, peeling waves. In Matthew 8, Jesus calms the storm, making it immediately glassy. The disciples were amazed and said, "Even the winds and the waves obey him!" Let's surf, serve and wear rad jewelry.

What inspired you to get started? My best friend asked if I wanted to start a succulent business, and I said yes. PALAFOX MARKET
Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza and Plaza Ferdinand, palafoxmarket.com
What inspired you to get started? Palafox Market opened in 2007 with around 25 local farmers and has grown into a weekly event featuring 250 vendors at two downtown parks. Farmers, painters, jewelry makers, bakers and other cottage entrepreneurs welcome up to 8,000 shoppers on the busiest Saturdays.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Palafox Market has become a flagship project of the DIB. It supports hundreds of diverse, local small businesses, encourages entrepreneurship and incubates new businesses. The market promotes tourism and contributes to the vitality of Pensacola, while supporting the overall growth and success of surrounding downtown businesses. What does being the "best" mean to you? Palafox Market is still thriving and supporting the community after almost two decades. Some of our vendors are multi-generational and it's gratifying to see grandparents, children and grandchildren working as a team at their Palafox Market small business and even growing into brick-and-mortar locations. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? We recently expanded into Ferdinand Plaza with Palafox Market South, and it's our goal to help more shoppers experience both market locations via a free market trolley that runs 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturdays directly to and from free City parking downtown.

PENSACOLA CANDLE COMPANY
pensacolacandleco.com
What inspired you to get started? During the pandemic, I was working from home for Navy Federal and needed a way to unwind after long
days. I had learned how to pour candles at 19 while working part-time for a candle shop—and decided to try it again. That simple hobby slowly turned into my business.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Hearing how much customers connect with my brand keeps me going—especially on the hard days. I've had people say a scent or name brought back a childhood memory or reminded them of someone they love. That's what makes all the long hours and challenges worth it. What does being the "best" mean to you? To me, being the best isn't about being perfect—it's about being consistent, showing up and creating products people genuinely love. If my work makes someone's day better, that's enough. The best is building something real and lasting, not just being at the top.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? Professionally, I'm hoping to open a retail space where customers can shop and take candle classes—it's just about finding the right timing. Personally, after my divorce this last year, I've been focused on healing and rediscovering who I am. This season is all about growth—in business and in life.

What inspired you to get started? As homebrewers, everyone wants to open a brewery, and as cliche as it sounds, we wanted to do it our own way. Couple that with the fact we were tired of working for other people. Also, beer at work is an added bonus.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Seeing how people interact and use this space has been the most rewarding feeling. People want to be here, and we want to continue to be here for them. Whether it's our staff, our customers or people we haven't met yet. What does being the "best" mean to you?
Being the best is just another adjective. Truthfully, we have a standard we work toward, and we strive to achieve it every day. If we hit that mark, we move the goal post. We always want to be better than yesterday.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
Same as it always is—make good beer and be nice folks. The rest always seems to shake out when the time is right.
What inspired you to get started? Only took one look at those beautiful white beaches, saw an amazing opportunity to be a part of a really fun beach town.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? All the people you meet on a day-to-day basis never gets old. It's a venture, along with being part of the fabric on Pensacola Beach.
What does being the "best" mean to you? Why not!
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
Basking in the sun and catching a tasty wave.

THE HANDLEBAR AND NIGHT MOVES FEST
319 N. Tarragona St., thehandlebar850.com, nightmovesfest.com
What inspired you to get started? The music scene was always a place I felt the most comfortable. When I saw it start to fall apart, I wanted to give back to the community that raised me and helped me throughout high school. Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? It will never get old to see a band play their first show or first big show as an opener with all the joy and excitement that comes along with that. What does being the "best" mean to you? Feeling like there's nothing more I could have done better, which is never, so the quest continues. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? We'd love to eventually grow Night Moves Fest to a full weekend concept, but we want to grow more controllably so that we can continue hosting it for years to come.

What inspired you to get started? The curiosity and integration of nature within fermentation is where it all began. Along with that, we also felt there were certain stories to be told through beverage, food, people and space within our community.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? The perpetual pursuit of
refinement for what we've already established while simultaneously finding new ways to reinvent and create what is uniquely us.
What does being the "best" mean to you?
We're just happy to play a role in the greater craft beer, food and Pensacola scene.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
No more businesses or babies ... for now. But we'll always continue to refine the product, the space and the events we do to continue providing unique and immersive Odd Colony experiences. And on a personal level, I think we're all just trying to spend more time in the woods.

What inspired you to get started? Delusion fueled by copious amounts of alcohol and a history of impulsively bad decisions. Honestly, we thought, "How hard could it be?" Spoiler alert—hard. But here we are 15 years later with the same ol' leaky roof.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? A hard-headed refusal to bend to the establishment. And spite. Alcohol helps. But mostly spite.
What does being the "best" mean to you? It means pretending we know what we're doing, while confidently correcting others who are also pretending. Basically, it's about staying two Google searches ahead of everyone else including our way-too-smart and technology-savvy staff.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? Surviving the fall of democracy. When it happens, come find us. Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? We have seen tremendous growth over the past year and are so grateful for all of our guests. What keeps us motivated is continuing to push limits within the cocktail industry, while offering approachable, delicious craft cocktails and food.
What does being the "best" mean to you? Being the best means having a team that isn't just well-trained, but well educated, engaged and proud to work here. We aim to lead the industry when it comes to trends and push boundaries with intention. Our motto is "1% better every day," and we start each shift with that mindset.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? CHRISOULA'S CHEESECAKE SHOPPE
236 W. Garden St., chrisoulascheesecakeshoppe.com
What inspired you to get started? I grew up in the restaurant business with my family here in Pensacola. It felt natural to have a business of my own. To top it off, cheesecake first originated on the island of Samos, Greece, where my dad is from. No wonder I like cheesecake. Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? I get to do what I love every day. I love to make people smile. I am amazed at how people really love our cheesecakes. It brings a sense of peace and love to hear people say wonderful things about their experience with us at our Shoppe.

We work hard behind the scenes, and being recognized as one of the best is just an incredible feeling to be thankful for. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? I would like to keep the business small with personal touches to make our customers happy. It's all about quality, not quantity.

CRAFT GOURMET BAKERY
5555 N. Davis Highway, Ste. H, craftgourmetbakery.com
What inspired you to get started? This is such a hard question to answer, because what inspired me to get started was simply my love for baking and desire to provide a great hospitality experience. That continues to be a guiding light for my business, even as I've had to step away from the kitchen.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? It's been such a learning curve going from someone in the kitchen 100% of the time to being the driving force behind a business. But I've fallen in love with the process of building a team that reflects the hard work, passion and love for baking that got me here. What does being the "best" mean to you? This constantly changes for me. Sometimes it's focusing on seeking greatness, and sometimes it's knowing when to pause and repair. Sometimes it's knowing when to push and when to encourage
time to rest and reset. I think our commitment to being adaptable is what keeps us in the running. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? Of course, our expansion to 615 Scenic Highway, plus a breath of fresh new life and changes to our original Davis Highway location and the welcoming of our first baby. So many great things in the works and on the way.

Being the best simply brings awareness of this effort to our community, hopefully inspiring others to join us in this journey.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
I have set a goal to set more goals. I will collect more random weird decor for my coffee bar. I will
think endlessly on opening another location and second guess myself and then keep going anyway.

NATIVE CAFE
45 Via De Luna Drive, thenativecafe.com
What inspired you to get started? The Brown family was inspired by Pensacola's uniquely blended culture and cuisine and saw an opportunity to share a taste of the Gulf Coast with tourists and local "Natives" alike.

A place where they know they can come and get a whopping serving of homestyle breakfast with a side of local culture.

Empty or nearly-empty plates on each table after each serving. While we absolutely love winning awards, Native Cafe always gauges our success one customer at a time.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? Continuing to sharpen our operation to provide the best possible customer experience. We also are glad to announce that we are actively looking to expand to other locations here in our home, Pensacola, and other areas across the Southeastern U.S.

PARLOR DOUGHNUTS
120 S. Palafox St., parlordoughnuts.com
What inspired you to get started? In 2021, I
stumbled upon the Miramar Parlor Doughnuts. At 7:30 a.m., I saw a line of people waiting outside. The first bite of doughnut was an instant revelation—it was something truly special that I knew had to be brought to my beloved community of Pensacola. Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? The joy of being able to serve both our amazing locals and out of town guests who we get the honor to meet and chat with each day. The pride felt from being just one more place in Pensacola's diverse culinary landscape where people can gather and community can happen. What does being the "best" mean to you? We feel incredibly honored to receive this recognition for the third consecutive year all without ever seeking a single vote. It reassures us that our efforts are worth it and inspires us to remain humble and strive for continuous improvement each day. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
I'm thrilled about our upcoming Nine Mile Road location, featuring a drive-thru and dining room, expected to open by year-end. Long-term, we aim to expand with multiple locations in Pensacola, including one on Pensacola Beach.

What inspired you to get started? We have always enjoyed creating great experiences around food. A great meal has the power to bring people together, combined with outstanding hospitality, and the ability to make every dining experience extraordinary was the initial motivation, and continues to be a constant theme.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? The same thing that has motivated us from the beginning: the love for hospitality and the constant pursuit of excellence and never settling for average. That responsibility, and the joy it brings, keeps us moving forward.
What does being the "best" mean to you?

What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? Including the successful launch of our new lunch menu, we're exploring the catering offerings with seasonal menus that travel well without compromising quality. It's about meeting guest expectations while staying intentional and focused on quality.
What inspired you to get started? I love the restaurant business industry. I tried the 9 to 5 and went right back. I helped run a food truck part time which motivated me to buy a small bagel business to make my own. Started playing around with pizza, and it took off.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? My staff. They all love their job and have become a huge pizza family. Also, great credit to our pizza customers that pump us up with their loyalty year to year.
What does being the "best" mean to you? Loving what you do. I'm motivated to keep our pizza consistent and listen to customers to become better no matter how long we've been in the business. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
Sky's reached the goal of opening our second loca-
tion in Pace on Woodbine Road. We had a rough start, but now we are rocking and rolling. Looking forward to our many years at both locations of doing what we do best—New York style pizza.

STEEL PONY DINER
41 S. Navy Blvd., steelponydiner.com
What inspired you to get started? We started the Steel Pony Diner to bring something new we had not seen to Pensacola. Having worked in restaurants for most of his life, Chef Eric was ready to share his culture, his love of food and his unique blend of flavors with the Pensacola community and beyond.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Our crew at the Steel Pony Diner keeps us going day after day. We wake up motivated by the prospect of improving their lives and continuing to help them grow toward their goals (as they help us each day in working toward ours). We wouldn't be here today without them. What does being the "best" mean to you? Always competing against ourselves to improve. We strive to be the best neighborhood restaurant we can be, serving high-quality food and service at an affordable price, while also challenging the norms of the hospitality industry by providing competitive/livable wages to support our team. What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? We're excited to be graduating out of our incubation phase and opening not one, but two locations, this fall. We're currently working to secure our inaugural Steel Pony Diner restau -
rant location, which will be our flagship, as well as a nonprofit Steel Pony Express location. Both here in Pensacola.

TAP THE COAST
tapthecoast.com
What inspired you to get started? In 2019, there were no mobile bars in the Panhandle. I wanted to bring something new, exciting and elevated to the area by creating a mobile bar experience that adds style, creativity and unforgettable drinks to special occasions. We are proud to have been the first in the Gulf Coast.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? We are always adding new services, expanding our service area and growing our fleet. We're committed to setting the standard, not just locally, but across the industry, while continuing to create unforgettable experiences for every client. There's much more to come.
What does being the "best" mean to you? It's simply raising the bar in every way—creating unforgettable experiences, setting the standard in our industry and showing up for our community. We're proud to support local charities and collaborate with other small businesses. It's also about making Tap the Coast a great place to work, where our team thrives.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally? Our classes have taken off in a big way, and we're excited to expand them beyond Pensacola into
other communities. We're also exploring ways to enhance the experience with curated add-ons our guests can take home. Plus, we're looking forward to exclusive partnerships with new luxury venues on the horizon.

VOODOO BBQ & GRILL
1741 E. Nine Mile Road, Ste. 9, voodoobbq.com
What inspired you to get started? It was a simple but tough decision—pursue corporate careers elsewhere or plant roots in Pensacola and build something of our own. We chose community, flavor and home. Pensacola believed in us, and we're proud to serve the people who inspire us every day.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Our amazing team and the community that believes in us. Their dedication, energy and heart fuel our passion to keep showing up, serving freshly made food with love and growing every step of the way.
What does being the "best" mean to you?
Staying true to our roots. It means bringing people together over slow-smoked BBQ, Cajun comfort food and bold Southern flavors that feel like home. It means treating our guests like family, supporting our team like they're our own and showing up for our community—every day.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
We're cooking up a rebrand, spicing up our catering game and building tools to help other restaurants succeed. This year marks our 10th anniversary at VooDoo BBQ, and we're just get-
ting started. Personally? More family dinners and maybe a little rest—after the next brisket, of course.

WHIM COTTON CANDY
whimcottoncandy.com
What inspired you to get started? It all started on a whim … I lost my job as a graphic designer during Covid, spent way too much time on the internet and bought a cotton candy machine. The rest is history.
Now that you're established, what motivates you to keep going? Being a part of the community motivates us more than anything. We love being a part of celebrations and traditions throughout the year, and it is such an honor to us when people look for us at events so they can have their favorite sweet treat.
What does being the "best" mean to you? It means that we are doing something right. There are tons of decisions and choices we have to make in order to grow and succeed as a small business, even when they aren't easy. But being considered the best at something makes the stress worth it.
What's the next goal or project on the horizon for you—personally and/or professionally?
The next goal that we have is to expand our services even more with some really exciting options, including some that are a bit more upscale. We are looking forward to another year of making your celebrations and parties a little sweeter.

‘City on the Rise’
highlights area for booming job market, talent growth, and quality of life
LinkedIn® has spotlighted Pensacola as one of its inaugural ‘Cities on the Rise’ — a curated list highlighting the 25 mid-sized U.S. metropolitan areas experiencing exceptional growth in hiring, talent migration, and job postings.
What’s Driving the Momentum?
LinkedIn’s ranking examines year-over-year percentage increases across three key metrics: hiring activity (defined by the number of people adding new positions to their profiles), job-posting volume, and the net influx of professionals relocating to the area.
Pensacola stood out in all categories, showcasing strength in several pivotal industries, including healthcare, professional services, and government administration — sectors that form the backbone of the city’s labor market.
Why Pensacola?
The region’s focus on supporting local businesses, helping startup companies, and creating a vibrant downtown has helped keep talent at home, attract new talent, and build a national reputation as a great place to live, work, and play.
Top employers: Navy Federal Credit Union, the U.S. Navy, and the University of West Florida are among the city’s largest employers by volume.
What’s Next?
Pensacola’s growth as a thriving Gulf Coast economic hub:
Sustained Growth: Continue supporting local businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs to foster local growth and economic resilience.
Workforce Development:
Prioritize building a skilled, reliable workforce to meet the demands of expanding industries.
Safe, Accessible Infrastructure:
Invest in walkable, safe infrastructure to enhance quality of life and accessibility for residents and visitors.
Project Follow-Through: Ensure that long-announced projects are actually completed:
• New apartment and hotel complexes.
• High-profile opportunities like American Magic.
• Deliver results that strengthen Pensacola’s reputation.
Methodology Note
LinkedIn’s ‘Cities on the Rise’ ranking draws on anonymized data from March 1, 2023 to February 1, 2025.

WEEK OF AUGUST 21
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): When glassmakers want to cool a newly blown piece, they don't simply leave it out to harden. That would cause it to shatter from the inside. Instead, they place it in an annealing oven, where the temperature drops in measured increments over many hours. This careful cooling aligns the internal structure and strengthens the whole. Let's invoke this as a useful metaphor, Aries. I absolutely love the heat and radiance you've expressed recently. But now it's wise for you to gradually cool down: to allow your fervor to coalesce into an enduring new reservoir of power and vitality. Transform sheer intensity into vibrant clarity and cohesion.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): To paraphrase Sufi mystic poet Rumi: "Don't get lost in your pain. Know that one day your pain will become your cure." In my astrological opinion, Taurus, you have arrived at this pivotal moment. A wound you've had to bear for a long spell is on the verge of maturing into a gift, even a blessing. A burdensome ache is ready to reveal its teachings. You may have assumed you would be forever cursed by this hurt, but that's not true. Now, it's your sacred duty to shed that assumption and open your heart so you can harvest the healing.
By Rob Brezsny
your protective self to stand at your gate and say: "I protect this. I cherish this. I won't dilute this."
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): "Dear Dr. Feelgood: Lately, you seem to be extra nice to us hypersensitive Crabs. Almost too kind. Why? Are you in love with a Cancerian woman, and you're trying to woo her? Did you hurt a Cancerian friend's feelings, and now you're atoning? Please tell me you're not just coddling us. —Permanently Drunk on a Million Feelings."
Dear Drunk: You use your imagination to generate visions of things that don't exist yet. It's your main resource for creating your future. This is especially crucial right now. The coming months will be a fertile time for shaping the life you want to live for the next 10 years. If I can help you keep your imagination filled with positive expectations, you are more likely to devise marvelous self-fulfilling prophecies.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): In traditional Chinese medicine, the heart is the seat of joy. It's also the sovereign that listens to the wisdom of the other organs before acting. Dear Leo, as you cross the threshold from attracting novelty to building stability, I encourage you to cultivate extra heartcentered leadership, both for yourself and for those who look to you for inspiration. What does that mean? Make decisions based on love and compassion more than on rational analysis. Be in service to wholeness rather than to whatever might bring temporary advantage.
identity is multifaceted. I think you should make a special point of celebrating this truth in the coming weeks, Libra. Now is an excellent time to explore and honor all of your many selves. Take full advantage of your inner diversity, and enjoy yourself to the max as you express and reveal the full array of truths you contain.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): As you enter a Tibetan Buddhist temple, you may encounter statues and paintings of fierce spirits. They are guardian figures who serve as protectors, scaring away negative and destructive forces so they can't enter the holy precincts. In accordance with astrological omens, Gemini, I invite you to be your own threshold guardian. Authorize a wise and strict part of you to defend and safeguard what truly matters. This staunch action doesn't have to be aggressive, but it should be informed with fierce clarity. You can't afford to let the blithe aspect of your personality compromise your overall interests by being too accommodating. Assign
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): In Mesoamerican myth, the god Quetzalcoatl journeys to the underworld not to escape death, but to recover old bones needed to create new life. I propose you draw inspiration from this story, Virgo. In recent weeks, you have been gathering pieces of the past, not out of a sense of burdensome obligation, but as a source of raw material. Now comes the time for reassembly. You won't rebuild the same old thing. You will sculpt visionary gifts for yourself from what was lost. You will use your history to design your future. Be alert for the revelations that the bones sing.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): In the Hebrew language, the word for "face" is plural. There is no singular form for panim. I love that fact. For me, it implies that each of us has a variety of faces. Our
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): In the ancient Hindu holy text known as the Upanishads, "ananda" means bliss, though not so much in the sense of physical or psychological pleasure as of deep, ecstatic knowing. I believe you are close to attracting this glorious experience into your soul, Scorpio—not just fleetingly, but for a while. I predict you will glide into alignments that feel like coming home to your eternal and perfect self. Treasure these moments as divine gifts. Immerse yourself with total welcome and gratitude. Let ananda inform your next steps.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): In Daoist cosmology, the nature of life is characterized by cyclical, flowing patterns rather than linear, static motions. In my study of its gorgeous teachings, I exult in how it inspires me to honor both contraction and expansion, the power of circling inward and reaching outward. With this in mind, Sagittarius, I invite you to make the spiral your symbol of power. Yes, it may sometimes feel like you're revisiting old ground. Perhaps an ex will resurface, or an old goal will seek your attention. But I guarantee it's not mere repetition. An interesting form of evolution is underway. You're returning to longstanding challenges armed with fresh wisdom. Ask yourself: What do I know now that I didn't before? How can I meet these interesting questions from a higher point of the spiral?
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): Inuit artworks are often made from materials available in their environment, like driftwood, stones, walrus ivory, whale bones and caribou bones
and antlers. Even their tools are crafted from that stuff. In part, this is evidence of their resourcefulness, and in part, a reflection of how lovingly they engage with their environment. I recommend you borrow their approach, Capricorn. Create your practical magic by relying on what's already available. Be enterprising as you generate usefulness and fun out of scraps and leftovers. Your raw material is probably better if it's not perfect.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): The medieval alchemists had a central principle, rendered in Latin as follows: "Visita interiora terrae, rectificando invenies occultum lapidem." Translated, it means, "Seek out the lower reaches of the earth, perfect them, and you will find the hidden stone." I invite you to go on a similar underground quest, Aquarius. The purpose is not to wallow in worry or sadness, but rather to retrieve a treasure. Some magnificence beneath your surface life is buried—an emotional truth, a creative impulse, a spiritual inheritance. And it's time you went and got it. Think of it as a quest and a pilgrimage. The "hidden stone," an emblem of spiritual riches, wants you to find it.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): In ancient Greece, the god Janus presided over doorways. He had two faces, one looking outward and forward, one gazing inward and backward. I believe this is your Janus phase, Pisces. Before you launch into your next fluidic quest, pause and take inventory. Peer behind you, not with regret but with curiosity and compassion. What cycle has fully ended? What wisdom has settled into your bones? Then face the future, not with shyness or foreboding, but with eager intention and confidence. What goals, rooted in who you are becoming, can inspire an exciting new plot thread?

CLOSE CALL On June 25, members of the Seattle Kraken hockey team, on a fly-fishing trip at Brooks Falls at Katmai National Park, Alaska, drew the unwanted attention of a bear on the prowl for food. Multiple outlets report that center John Hayden and the team's mascot, Buoy—who was in full costume—were in the water when their guide spotted the bear and moved the group. The bear took a sudden interest in Buoy and charged toward him briefly before stopping and turning around. "I want to blame it on Buoy," Hayden joked. "They were pretty interested in his look." No one was harmed in the encounter, and other team members were unfazed. Meanwhile, the whole situation has drawn the ire of PETA, who sent a strongly worded letter filled with hockey puns, detailing the harm that fishing for sport does to fish, even when they are thrown back, and urging the team to "bench their fishing rods for good."
NEVER HEARD OF HIM St. Jude the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Erie, Pennsylvania, holds a Corvette raffle every year to raise money for the parish, and in 2024, one "Martin Anderson" came away with the top prize. But on Aug. 6, the Erie Times-News reported that an investigation by the Erie County District Attorney's Office discovered that no such person exists. Father Ross Miceli is under investigation for making up the name of the winner as well as winners of other prizes. The church declined to comment but acknowledged there was an active criminal investigation underway. The reverend has been placed on administrative leave.
WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME After the large earthquake on July 29 in western Russia, tsunami warnings were communicated all the way to the U.S. West Coast. A Norwegian Cruise Lines ship docked at Hilo, Hawaii, took heed and left the port for the safety of its guests. But a group of passengers who were still on shore got the warning of the ship's departure too late, KHON-TV reported. Eric Anderson and his father were separated from their family, who had gone back to the ship. Anderson said the ship had texted that it would leave at 4 p.m., but it departed closer to 3:30. Fortunately, local residents transported the stranded passengers to Waiakea High School, where they spent the night. They were reunited with their families on July 30 after the warnings were canceled.
POLICE REPORT Boy, Chuck E. Cheese is a hotbed of weird behavior these days. This week's installment involves a brawl that took place on July 26 at a location in Mobile, Alabama. WKRGTV reported that witnesses said about 20 people were fighting because a teenage boy "got upset about something." "They started fighting as I was walking by," said a girl who was hit in the face, "and then they punched me on accident." The Mobile Police Department is investigating by watching surveillance video and reaching out to those involved. Public Information Officer Roderick Miles advised that people in such circumstances "try to do something that's going to result in better decisions than fighting at a freaking Chuck E. Cheese."

EWWWWW! Leanna Coy, a flight attendant based in Connecticut, couldn't help but share the yuck factor after she made a discovery on the floor of a plane, the New York Post reported on July 24. "Those are toenails," she captioned a TikTok post. "The passenger clipped their toenails mid-flight and left them." Commenters had no empathy for the long-in-the-toenail flyer: "No-fly list!" said one. "What dirtbag did this?" asked another.
GREAT ART People magazine reported on July 24 that 33-year-old Jane Labowitch of Maryland is making a living, and a name for herself, with her Etch-a-Sketch art. Labowitch's subjects include Russia's St. Basil's Cathedral and Grant Wood's "American Gothic." She said when she was little, her grandmother wouldn't let her watch TV as much as she wanted, so with her Etch-a-Sketch, she just "started from staircases." She hopes the classic toy "isn't going anywhere. I think that it's got a lot left to give the world."
SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED On July 23 in Tallahassee, Florida, police took a famous mouse into custody: Chuck E. Cheese. The Tallahassee Democrat reported that Mr. Cheese, aka Jermell Jones, had been fingered as the person who stole a patron's credit card in June and made fraudulent purchases with it. When police arrived at the famous restaurant, Jones, wearing his giant costume mouse head, was handcuffed and escorted out the front door in front of patrons young and old. Officers found the stolen credit card in his possession.
SAW THAT COMING On July 5, a family from Paris left on holiday, headed to Morocco, Oddity Central reported. But during a 4:30 a.m. stop at a gas station, the 62-year-old man drove off without his wife—and didn't realize it until about 190 miles later. The unnamed Parisian called emergency services but couldn't remember which gas station he had stopped at. The couple's 22-year-old daughter couldn't help, as she'd been sleeping the whole time. Fortunately, by tracking her phone, police were able to locate the woman, who hadn't left the gas station since being abandoned. They were reunited and continued on their trip with a good story to tell.
THE TECH REVOLUTION At U.S. Army bases, there's a new tool in warding off problematic wildlife, such as birds, KPVI-TV reported on July 10. The Army's Engineer Research and Development Center has created an unmanned ground system: large plastic coyotes mounted to wheeled bases. "It all comes down to scare tactics," said ERDC. Research continues to incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning. What could go wrong? Roadrunner is watching. {in}
