Detzner has agreed to comply, but elections supervisors in Alachua, Leon and Hillsborough counties say it's too late to secure early voting sites before the Aug. 28 primaries, and they're not sure whether they can nail down on-campus locations before the November general election.

FOLLOW THE PROCESS In January, Incoa Performance Minerals officials approached the Port of Pensacola about the possibility of setting up a calcium carbonate processing facility. They were given a tour of the port.

FloridaWest was asked to work with them.

The mayor's office considered the company a viable tenant for the Port and specifically excluded the "mineral processing facility" in its marketing agreement with NAI Halford that was dated Feb. 2.

FloridaWest negotiated for the city leases for Port Warehouse #9 and #10 and approximately 6.5 acres of adjacent undeveloped land. Incoa would invest initially $25 million at the Port and another $75 million when the second and third manufacturing lines were completed. The total annual revenue for the Port would be over $1 million, including rent, dockage, wharfage and other fees. When built out, the manufacturing facility will have an annual payroll of over $5 million and 77 full-time jobs. The average salary would be $65,000.

The proposal was delivered to the City.

Council President Gerald Wingate placed it on the agenda, and the council approved that the mayor negotiate with Incoa and present an agreement to the council for final approval.

Incoa followed the process it was told to follow. FloridaWest staff did what city officials asked the economic development authority to do.

There had been no restrictions placed on the Port that stated only high-tech companies or tenants that don't use the railroad should be considered. The public may want to create such limitations on future use of the Port.

They may want to completely shut down the city enterprise. However, Incoa followed the process it was given.

If Mayor Hayward wanted to halt any Port lease discussion until after the Moffatt & Nichol port study was completed, he should have announced it to the public. The City shouldn't have signed a marketing agreement with NAI Halford. FloridaWest should have been told not to negotiate with Incoa.

However, he made no such announcement.

The process of leasing the Port hasn't been completed. What happens next is Mayor Hayward's move. Legitimate questions have been asked about the operation.

The mayor should seek the answers. Some are concerned about performance and "clawback" clauses in the contract. The mayor can include them in the agreement. Incoa has asked for an agreement to be worked out quickly, but the mayor is under no obligation to comply.

The ball is in the strong mayor's court.

I think we should complete the process.

Let the mayor do his due diligence and see what he brings back to the council. Then we can all weigh in before the council vote. {in} rick@inweekly.net

ANALYSIS: OLSON'S WILD RIDE

By Rick Outzen Late Friday, Aug. 3, Pensacola City Administrator Eric Olson notified his department heads that he was resigning, effective 5 p.m. He told them that he had planned to stay on the job no later than November, but Mayor Hayward said that now was the right time for him to leave.

At 5:01 p.m., the mayor's office put out an official statement, "Mayor Hayward announced today that Eric Olson has relinquished his role as city administrator now that the fiscal year 2019 budget workshops are complete."

"Eric has helped lead this Administration—and the city—to new heights. I will miss Eric's insight, unwavering discipline and infectious enthusiasm for the hard work of municipal government," said the mayor. "I am confident that he has laid a strong foundation that will allow our administration to complete the first mayoral transition under our new form of government."

Hayward named Assistant City Administrator Keith Wilkins to replace Olson as city administrator through the end of his term.

Olson served Hayward as his administrator longer than his three predecessors, Bill Reynolds (August 2011-July 2013), Colleen Castille (July 2013-August 2014) and interim Dick Barker (September 2014-March 2015).

The retired Navy officer joined the mayor's office staff in August 2013 as an 66

initiatives coordinator, having worked as a veteran outreach coordinator for Habitat for Humanity. A year later, he was named assistant city administrator when Castille announced her resignation. Privately, city council members were told the mayor would appoint him city administrator in six months once Olson could beef up his resume to show he had at least some municipal leadership experience. Mayor Hayward appointed Eric Olson as city administrator at the end of March 2015.

TROUBLED BEGINNING

Olson was supposed to run the city in tandem with Chief Operations Officer Tamara Fountain, who also had no municipal experience before she was hired as a communications consultant to the mayor's office in September 2012. The partnership fell apart when the media began to question Fountain's qualifications and Mayor Hayward misstated that she had a master's degree. Fountain submitted her resignation in August 2015.

Olson immediately got in trouble when he tried to silence the head of the city's oldest neighborhood association, North Hill Preservation Association. Melanie Nichols was questioning the legality of a radio tower in the Long Hollow Conservation District. Olson contacted Nichols' boss complaining that Nichols, a federal employee, had used her official email account to contact city staff.

When questioned by the media, Olson

claimed that he noticed the alleged violation while routinely reviewing council memos. To defend his action, he said that Nichols had sent 349 emails from his office account over three years. He didn't explain why he didn't just call Nichols about the "problem" and instead went to her boss.

Inweekly analyzed the 349 emails that were found. After subtracting auto-replies, forwards, duplications, out of office emails and replies to city employees, the actual number Nichols sent in three years was 63—less than two a month over the three years. City staff knew Nichols and wasn't intimidated by her correspondence.

Olson followed up his blunder with an executive order banning city staff from responding to any emails from federal government accounts. Inweekly and the First Amendment Foundation protested stating the directive violated the citizens' rights to public records.

The state attorney's office agreed, and Olson had to rescind his order.

When his dispute with Nichols was reported, the city administrator barely survived a "no confidence" vote when the city council tied 4-4 on the vote.

Six months later, when the city put Fire Chief Matt Schmitt and Deputy Fire Chief Joe Glover on administrative leave, Inweekly discovered that the mayor's office had failed to establish an independent appeal board and changed the appeal process to limit the men's ability to challenge the decision. The newspaper also found the new HR policy manual had been uploaded to the city's website after the chiefs were placed on leave.

Olson met with New Journal's editorial board and came up with this explanation, "There are two boxes that showed up on your door. They're not connected, but they showed up at your door on the same day.

One box is an investigation; one box is an HR manual change."

The "two boxes" theory got little traction. Olson also stated on a local morning show that Schmitt and Glover were placed on administrative leave in response to the EEOC complaints they filed. It's illegal to retaliate against an employee for filing an EEOC complaint. Olson's comment has been integral to the chiefs' lawsuits against the city.

HIDING OUT

Olson gradually became more reclusive. He instructed city staff to only use emails when absolutely necessary to avoid creating public records. His reports at city

council meetings became shorter and often included department heads filling his time with updates. He cut off council members from asking many questions of staff during public meetings and instructed to meet privately with them instead.

The city administrator struggled to complete the mayor's agenda. At the end of his term, Mayor Hayward touted two economic development projects, the fish hatchery at Bruce Beach and DeepFlex at the Port of Pensacola. Olson failed to complete any of them.

The fish hatchery became ensnared in a legal dispute because the city didn't keep track of the commencement deadline or request an amendment to the contract.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission canceled the deal in June.

While he was running for re-election in June 2014, Mayor Hayward announced DeepFlex would bring 200 jobs and $50 million in capital investment to the Port.

Because of the collapse of the oil prices, the project had stalled by the time Olson took over city operations. He finally admitted to the council in August 2016 that the project was dead. However, he did nothing to help the Port for the next two years. The council approved an economic feasibility study in September 2016, but the study wasn't started until two months ago.

The mayor's most significant achievement, ST Engineering at the Pensacola International Airport, had to be taken over by consultant David Penzone because the Escambia Board of County Commissioners lost faith in Olson and didn't want him making presentations to their board anymore after dealing with him on the gas tax allocation.

Had he not resigned, Olson would have faced another "no confidence" vote over how he mishandled the city's recycling. In October 2017, the city discontinued sending its curbside recycling to Tarpon Paper and started taking it to the landfill. Olson was forced to send the council a memo regarding the decision when Councilwoman Sherri Myers placed a discussion of recycling on the council's May agenda.

Olson tried to make it look like the recycling had only been a problem since March, but Inweekly discovered the last recycling sent to Tarpon Paper was in late September 2017. The public had faithfully put their recycling bins on the curb every week while Olson hid his decision not to act sooner to work out a recycling contract with the Emerald Coast Utility Authority.

Until last Friday, Mayor Hayward had stood by his administrator after each of his miscues. It's surprising that the mayor wouldn't want Olson to help him complete his final three months in the city hall.

When she announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination to be Florida's Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Nikki Fried released a video that made it clear where she stood on two controversial issues— medical marijuana and guns.

"There is no clearer example of our broken government than medical marijuana and this deadly weapon," Fried said in the video, while images of an assault rifle being fired were displayed. "One helps sick and dying Floridians and is over-regulated, and the other one is used to terrorize our schools and our communities and is barely regulated at all."

Fried is a Fort Lauderdale-based attorney and lobbyist that received her undergraduate, masters and law degrees from the University of Florida, where she was student body president, Blue Key Society member and named to the UF Student Hall of Fame.

In 2014, she received an award from the Florida Bar's Legal Needs of Children Committee "for her leadership of Florida's Children First lobbying team," according to her biography. Two years ago, she founded Igniting Florida in 2016 and played an integral role in the passage of HB 307, relating to the usage of medical marijuana for those who are terminally ill.

office to talk about her campaign. Fixing the state's regulations regarding medical marijuana was very much on her mind.

"I've been in the cannabis space for four to five years and seen how much it's helping our citizens and how much Tallahassee really messed up its implementation," she said. "It will take somebody like me, who understands the moving parts and understands Tallahassee, to go in and try to fix the cannabis side and expand it."

Nikki Fried By expansion, Fried means creating an industrial hemp industry under the Florida Department of Agriculture. She believes it could have a $30-40 billion impact on the state's economy.

"Industrial hemp can be used instead of Styrofoam and paper cups and straws," she told Inweekly. "It would bring more manufacturing jobs back into the state because you need to not only be able to grow the hemp but then process it."

"The department has just dropped the ball a lot," she said. "We keep hearing that all the stalling has happened in the last seven to eight months, and the new licensing is because the governor doesn't want new licenses under his administration, point blank."

Current Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam has been criticized for his agency failing to review national background checks on tens of thousands of applications for concealed weapons permits due to a software issue.

When asked about the snafu, Fried said, "The buck stops at the top. There are systematic problems, and not just the permitting of concealed weapons, but also in the hunting licenses and the security guards. And so what that tells me is there was a culture inside of that office that these things were not important."

She believes the culture of the agency was to see how fast permits could be granted at any cost.

"There's a reason why there's a process," said Fried. "And there's a reason why it's under that department. It's because of consumer protection, and that wasn't done."

She said, "For Adam to have shifted the blame any time along the way is irresponsible on his part. He should have immediately, once figuring out that there was a problem, notified the governor, notified the legislature, notified the public that, 'Hey, look, we've noticed there's a problem.

We've fixed it. This is how we're going to make sure we don't do it again.'"

When elected, Fried plans to audit the permitting process, review the rules and determine whether they're adequate.

"We make sure that everybody goes through a proper background check, that it's completed, however long it takes," she said. "Sure, it's maybe going to take a little bit longer, but you know what, you can wait a couple more weeks for your permit.

I don't know why you need to be expedited to such an extreme that you're missing major steps along the way."

Besides medical marijuana and gun permits, Fried is concerned about fraud.

"We are number one in fraud in the entire country in South Florida on gas station pumps," she said. "There is a cartel down in South Florida that is skimming the chip readers in all of the gas station pumps."

She continued, "And, especially, I've seen in South Florida the IRS scams, and a lot are senior citizens that are getting these phone calls, and they think they're getting these warrants or getting arrested for not paying their IRS. They don't understand what's going on."

Can a Democrat win a statewide election?

Fried thinks she can because the Republicans are having to move so far to the right to win their primaries.

"I believe that my candidacy is a new face of agriculture. I think the state of Florida is looking for something new, something different." Fried "All are wanting that Trump endorsement," she said. "That may get them out of the primary, but that won't get them out of the general. You're going to see a lot more Independents that are definitely going to swing toward the Democratic Party."

Fried added, "I believe that my candidacy is a new face of agriculture. I think the state of Florida is looking for something new, something different. While I don't come from traditional agriculture, I'm going to fight like I did. And they're looking for somebody who has the progressive forward thinking of where we can move agriculture and somebody who's gonna protect the consumer." {in}

Superintendent Malcolm Thomas has brought in help to deal with the challenges of his most troubled schools. In July, the Escambia County School Board approved hiring the Rensselaerville Institute, which is headquartered in Delmar, N.Y., to operate Warrington Middle School and help principals and faculty turn around nine elementary schools: Global Learning Academy, Warrington, Ensley, Navy Point, Holm, Montclair, Sherwood, Brentwood and West Pensacola.

The three-year contract for Warrington Middle totals $1.474 million. The company will be paid $350,000 to help the nine lowperforming elementary schools.

Rensselaerville Institute is the second company the district has hired to turn around Warrington Middle. In 2014, the school board hired the Jacksonville-based consulting firm Turnaround Solutions, Inc. for $375,000 to make academic gains at the middle school. The school's grade remained a 'D.'

ing 12.4 percent of the vote. All three are within the margin of error of 4.5 percent.

Following White, Bill Fetke received 11.4 percent, Kendrick Doidge 10 percent and Terry Strickland 7.6 percent of the vote. Over 23 percent either don't know nothing about the candidates or were still undecided.

Fetke has shown the largest gain since the June 22 poll, going from fifth place with 6.7 percent to fourth with 11.4 percent—up 4.7 points. Litton jumped up by 4.5 points.

The persons sampled were likely voters of District 4 GOP primaries in Escambia County. They were called using an interactive voice response system during the hours of 2-8 p.m. July 26-28. The phone numbers called were provided by Escambia Supervisor of Elections Office.

RED MEAT FOR GAETZ More than 600

people rallied last week behind Donald Trump Jr. at Northwest Florida State College as he stumped for his father and endorsed Congressman Matt Gaetz for re-election.

"Matt asked me, 'Hey, Don, can you come down to Florida?' I said, 'Yeah, sure,'" Trump Jr. said. "But for me, it's an honor to be able to do that, to be able to fight for this country and to be able to make sure that we have leaders like Matt, who will stand there and will fight for our country.

We need fighters."

As Trump Jr. continued his speech, it strayed from Gaetz to President Donald Trump.

He spoke about the reform created and fought for under his father and emphasized the importance of his re-election in 2020.

"He (President Trump) was willing to give up a pretty extravagant lifestyle for all of you," Trump Jr. said. "The only person who didn't need that job was Donald Trump, and yet he's doing it, and he's doing it well."

He continued, "What we can do when we win again in 2020, what he can accomplish with eight years getting things done, will be incredible."

Though Trump Jr. was the man of the hour, there were a number of other speakers such as U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, who is running for governor, State Rep. Matt Caldwell, who is running for Florida Agriculture Commissioner, and Stoneman Douglas High School student Kyle Kashuv.

Each touched on a combination of tax reform, the second amendment, military and news media. Gaetz echoed with an emphasis on military and the national news networks.

"I know what some of the other networks do, like CNN and MSNBC," he said.

"I just feel sorry for their viewers. I feel like the people watching those shows deserve the truth every once in a while."

RALLY PROTESTS More than 50 protestors stood outside the Northwest Florida State College arena as Trump fans filtered in. Groups standing for LGBTQ rights, gun

control and immigration reform gathered to peacefully protest.

Cyndi Stone, a physics and environmental science teacher at Fort Walton Beach High School, held a sign that read, "I stand for my students."

"I have students who are afraid to go home at night, that maybe their big sister who came here when she was four but is now 22 will get deported," said Stone. "I have students who have had parents deported."

The environmental issues, the immigration reform, the attack on the LGBT community, especially military, all changed my mind."

Kaylah Acosta, 19, said, "I'm here protesting for compassion. I'm not here to change anyone's opinion because I can't change their opinion, but I can get more people who are my age involved. This is a passion of love."

Acosta, a Fort Walton Beach resident, sported a T-shirt that read, "The only Donald we acknowledge is Glover." She held a sign that read, "Do all lives still matter?

She is a past chairman of the Council of Aging and is a prolific fundraiser for the charities that she supports.

Logan DeVries joined the NAI Halford in June 2005. In 2011, he was selected for Leadership Pensacola. He earned the prestigious Certified Property Management designation in 2015. He has been a continuous TOP Producer for the firm.

MURDERER LOSES APPEAL An appeals court Friday rejected an appeal in a murder case that involved the sale of a valuable collection of cards from the game Magic: The Gathering. A three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal turned down arguments by William Cormier III, who was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in the 2012 murder of Sean Dugas, a former reporter for the Pensacola News Journal.

Dugas had a collection of cards from the Magic trading card game worth $50,000 to $100,000, according to the appeals court ruling. Cormier was accused of killing Dugas, emptying his house and selling thousands of dollars' worth of the cards. Dugas' body was found buried in the

backyard of the home of Cormier's father in Georgia. Dugas' skull had been shattered from blows apparently cause by a hammer, the appeals court said.

In the appeal, Cormier raised several issues involving contentions that he had received "ineffective assistance of counsel" at his trial. As an example, Cormier argued that his attorney had not presented evidence about Cormier's participation in poker tournaments—evidence that purportedly could have disputed prosecutors' theory that Cormier committed the murder because he needed money. But the appeals court rejected the arguments. "(It) is clear that the appellant (Cormier) was not in good financial condition at the time of the murder, regardless of any poker winnings," said the 13-page ruling.

"He did not own a car, could not rent one for himself and could not afford to buy relatively inexpensive items at Walmart without using the victim's trading card money. By his own testimony, when the Sebring broke down, he could not afford to repair it. Under these circumstances, evidence of his poker winnings would not have disproven the financial motive for the victim's murder."

EXPERIENCE NEEDED According to the Florida Department of Education, only four school districts have teachers with average years of experience less than Escambia County. The state average during the 201617 school year was 11.27 years for a teacher.

The Escambia County School District average was only 7.35. In Jim Paul's last year as superintendent (2008-09), the average experience for a teacher was 9.47 years.

Under Superintendent Malcolm Thomas, the district has teachers with an average of two years less experience. Retention and job satisfaction appear to be issues.

Santa Rosa teachers have an average of

11.95 years of experience, Okaloosa 12.68 years. Both school districts are 'A' districts.

Escambia County is a 'C.'

ers of the Pensacola Bay Area has launched a nonpartisan online voter education tool, vote411.org. The website is a "one-stop shop," providing tools to help voters in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties navigate the voting. It contains candidate information, voter registration tools, constitutional amendment analysis, polling place locations and other helpful election information.

The website has detailed candidate information, including candidates' direct responses to issue-related questions, as well as information about the election process in Florida. Users can visit vote411.org and enter their addresses to find information from the candidates they will see on their ballot.

BUS ROUTE WORKSHOP The public is invited to attend two upcoming Escambia County Area Transit public workshops to provide input regarding proposed modifi-

cations to six bus routes recommended in the Comprehensive Operational Analysis Plan. The workshops will be held 1-2:30 p.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15 at ECAT Administrative Offices, 1515 W. Fairfield Drive.

INWEEKLY: As an actor, do you relate to your character, Kayla, having her internet self and her real self?

FISHER: I definitely relate as an actor, but I can also just relate to it as a person. I think really anyone who has social media is performing because you have to worry so much about the permanence of what you say on it. You know, you only want to show your best self.

20th-century poet W. H. Auden called the industrialized world anxiety-inducing, and, in 2018, a lot of that anxiety comes from social media.

Instagram and Snapchat have turned picture sharing into a competition, reversing the words of Fred Rogers, "You don't ever have to do anything sensational for people to love you." Great becomes an enemy of the good; quiet moments are choked of their meaning. The struggle isn't new, and it's experienced by everyone, including teenage girls and famous male comedians alike. That's where the new movie "Eight Grade" finds its sweet spot.

The film explores the anxiety once only experienced by performers that's now ubiquitous and democratized by social media.

Written and directed by 27-year-old comedian Bo Burnham, "Eighth Grade" explores a teenage girl's quiet desperation.

Then I would do my shows, and like young kids would come up to me and said they felt like me," Burnham said in an H3 Podcast interview.

15-year-old actress Elsie Fisher portrays Kayla, a normal middle school girl. It's her last week of middle school, and her burgeoning social life is in view. But the gap between who she was in middle school and who she's becoming is a ravine made wider, not minimized, by technology. Kayla's stuck in her room like any other kid, but watching schoolmates on social media drives her FOMO to parrot self-help platitudes on her YouTube channel. It makes her actual social interactions cringy but hilariously relatable.

Since opening at Sundance, "Eighth Grade" has been winning audiences over with its humor and humanity, and Pensacola moviegoers are finally getting a chance to see it. In anticipation of the film expanding and coming to more screens, we talked to Fisher about making the movie and how it compares to her real life.

INWEEKLY: Do you have anybody like Emily Robinson's character Olivia in your life? Any older teens who introduced you to the high school world?

FISHER: Yeah, I have three friends in high school who are all juniors. They're pretty much like Olivia to me. I think Olivia's character can be summed up as "nice, without a catch." I think a lot of people assume, "Oh, yeah, Kayla's going to call her, and Olivia's going to be mean. It's like, oh god!" I'm lucky enough to know people, and if we're being honest, it's more than three. I'm just singling out these friends.

INWEEKLY: You talked about having to perform online. Do you think as a young adult actor you have to perform a maturity beyond your years or grow up a little faster?

FISHER: I feel like it's beneficial, that's for sure. I don't think it's something you have to do. I've met so many child actors who are just doing fantastic. They're still kids and it's awesome. I don't regret growing up faster. I think I was just raised right by my parents. It is beneficial, though. It helps me observe the workings on set.

INWEEKLY: Jake Ryan is so funny in this movie. Were you laughing on set?

FISHER: It was pretty professional. There were some things, I mean, in the moment, it's really awkward, and it is a funny scene even

when you're in it. The banana scene, when you go and watch it, now is a pretty funny scene, but on set it was treated just as seriously as something like the car scene because both are part of a truthful narrative.

INWEEKLY: The movie has so many heightened emotions, and the soundtrack amplifies it. Did you hear the music beforehand, or did Bo set the tone for how intense it would be?

FISHER: No, a lot of the tone was set by the wonderful environment created by the cast and crew. I heard the music for the first time when I watched the movie for the first time at the Sundance screening. I was just blown away. I can't imagine the movie without it. It's insane.

FISHER: I immediately started crying. Not because I was embarrassed to have my face on screen. It was a proud kind of crying, you know?

INWEEKLY: How was it working with Bo as a director?

FISHER: It was amazing. He's a very fantastic director. He's in the scene with you, and I think that's just wonderful. He was there. It's hard to point out one specific story, but if you ever had a thought, he would want to listen. He would want your input. He was very aware that he was a man writing about a teenager. To me especially, and I think all the other kids, he was like, "You guys are the teenagers; you know what's happening. I don't. You take the lead." He was very willing to collaborate. In The Cut with Honeyfitz JONES: I live in Western Massachusetts, which is where I was born and raised. I love it here, and I'm always sad to leave. A big theme in my life has been being a resident of a big college area where lots of people are transplants or are only living here temporarily. I've done three tours this year already. I'll be leaving for my fourth in August.

INWEEKLY: Can you talk about how this new EP came together?

JONES: Making "Cutting Your Hair" was actually a far less collaborative process than my music usually is. There's one song that features Emily Carter of the band OroborO (as well as some other friends) on vocals, but otherwise, I made all the music myself. It's my last project recorded in the way I've traditionally made music, which involves recording all the basic tracks to cassette and then doing digital overdubs. It was mixed by Andrew Oedel at Ghost Hit Recording, who also mixed my record "Old Patterns," and they are an absolute genius. Everyone in my scene is working with him these days, for good reason.

These lines open the second track off the newest release by Elihu Jones, the artist behind the Western Massachusetts band Honeyfitz. "Cutting Your Hair" is a four-track EP released earlier this summer and captures the best elements of Jones's road-tested rural pop soundscapes. The rich guitar tones and doubled vocal tracks will be familiar to those who have been following Honeyfitz over the years, while distilling the best of Jones's previous releases into a tight 11 minutes. The digital release is tagged under "bedroom pop"—a descriptor which weaves together the acoustic guitar-driven

songs of folk punk with the hazy vaporwave of early Myspace releases. Think Gregory and the Hawk meets Real Live Tigers. The sounds of online DIY that "Cutting Your Hair" triggers is a dreamy side effect of the release, complementing Jones's increasingly distinct composition. Jones recorded all the instruments for the record, continuing to utilize his MPC 1000 for the percussion.

Recently, Inweekly spoke to Jones about "Cutting Your Hair," what's going on in Massachusetts and his upcoming show at The Handlebar.

INWEEKLY: Where's home base for you right now? What are your tour plans for the year?

INWEEKLY: Are you collaborating with other artists or collectives on a regular basis?

JONES: Gabe Gill is my pop star friend and my most frequent collaborator. We write together better than anyone else I've ever worked with. I also live with members of Snowhaus and OroborO. It's a huge blessing to be surrounded by other people who are so focused on music. I'm indebted to all of them, even if most of our collaboration is through osmosis.

INWEEKLY: A lot of people that have discovered Honeyfitz first heard you playing while on tour.

How do you feel about the state of the scene this year?

JONES: I have some big gripes with the house show/DIY scene, but on the whole, it's a world that I love being a part of. I love feeling tapped into small

and close-knit scenes all over the East Coast.

Obviously, every town has ebbs and flows in the quality of their scene, but in general, those balance each other out.

INWEEKLY: Any highlights from these most recent tours? What's the weirdest show you've played?

JONES: The wildest show didn't actually happen, which was in Hattiesburg, Miss., this past January. We ended up having to leave the venue before the music even started, but suffice to say the night involved a bar owner who had no idea the show was happening, a nonexistent booker and a missing sound person.

There have been excellent shows in Clemson, Pittsburgh and Lancaster, though.

INWEEKLY: Are there any records or bands that have come your way recently that you really love? Are there any releases you want to gush about and want people to check out?

JONES: I love being able to listen to music made by my best friends. Gabe Gill put out his debut record this year ("Carousel Pt. 1"), and it's everything I want in a pop record. "Where Blew A Flower, May A Flower No More" by Apricot Blush is an incredible record by a band I toured with this winter. It's like beautiful and weird folk songs. "They Don't End Pretty" is the long-awaited debut from Snowhaus. I like to describe it as pop punk, but only because that drives them crazy. They call it shred pop. OroborO is my favorite new Western Mass band, and their album from this past winter will melt your mind. {in}

One-hundred companies are ranked in small, medium and large employer categories.

news of the weird SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED Among the gazillion other products and services available from Amazon is the behemoth's facial recognition software, Rekognition, marketed as providing extremely accurate facial analysis. But when the American Civil Liberties Union gave it a go, the results were startling. Using Rekognition, the ACLU scanned photos of every current member of the U.S. House and Senate and came up with 28 matches to a mug shot database of people who had been arrested for crimes. The ACLU announced its findings July 26 and admitted it used Amazon's default settings, to which Amazon responded, "While 80 percent confidence is an acceptable threshold for photos of hot dogs, chairs, animals or other social media use cases," Amazon would advise customers to set the threshold at 95 percent or higher for law enforcement. The ACLU told NPR that the legislators who were falsely matched were men, women, Republicans and Democrats of all ages. However, the software did misidentify people of color at a higher rate.

WEIRD SCIENCE You thought you were old?

You're just a twinkle in a nematode's eye. Russian scientists have revived two ancient, frozen roundworms, or nematodes, from samples collected in Siberian permafrost, The Siberian Times reported on July 26. The worms, which were found in cores taken from 30 meters and 3.5 meters deep, are believed to be female and 41,700 and 32,000 years old, respectively. After collecting the samples, scientists slowly thawed out the worms, which eventually started eating and moving. Scientists from the Institute of Physico-Chemical and Biological Problems of Soil Science in Moscow believe the nematodes have some adaptive mechanisms that may be of scientific importance.

FLORIDA. NEED WE SAY MORE? During a July 23 debate among mayoral candidates in Key West, Florida, Sloan Bashinsky, a perennial contender, took a minute to answer a call from God. "Hello? What? God?" Bashinsky said, speaking into his cellphone. According to FLKeys News, it wasn't the first time he's heard from a higher power: "I have said every time I ran, I ran because God told me to run," Bashinsky explained. "I think anyone who wants this job is insane." Bashinsky has a law degree from Vanderbilt University and was once among the island's homeless. He joins six other candidates on the ticket.

SIGN OF THE TIMES Just after midnight on July 22, a couple in Palo Alto, California, were awakened in their bedroom by a 17-year-old burglar with a garment obscuring his face. Instead of demanding money or jewelry, though, the intruder asked for their Wi-Fi password.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the homeowner forced the teen out of the home and called police, who tracked him down a block away and arrested him for felony residential burglary. Police later determined it wasn't the teen's first attempt at connectivity. Less

than an hour earlier that night, a prowler had summoned a woman from her home to ask for access to her Wi-Fi network also. She told him to go away, and he rode off on a bicycle—which she realized the next day he had stolen from her backyard. She called police, who recovered the bike near where they had arrested the teen.

BRIGHT IDEAS Jeffrey Jacobs, 37, thought he had a great thing going. Last year, when a tree fell on his White Plains, New York, home, he told the owner of a tree service (and big hockey fan) that he was the owner of the NHL's Boston Bruins, reported The Hour. Impressed, the tree service owner sent a crew in the midst of a storm, then billed the actual club owner, 78-year-old Jeremy Jacobs, $5,100 for the service. Police in nearby Wilton, Connecticut, heard about the deception when they received a call in May from security officials at a company chaired by the Bruins' owner. The story sounded familiar: In November, Jacobs had been pulled over in Wilton, and he told officers he owned the Bruins in an effort to get out of the ticket. On July 20, Jacobs was pulled over for using his phone while driving in Poughkeepsie, New York, sent back to Wilton and charged with criminal impersonation.

•Diamonds are SO 20th century. In Japan, Warp Space is offering newlyweds the chance to make their union universal with wedding plaques launched into space. According to United Press International, the startup company, founded by faculty members from the University of Tsukuba, will print a titanium plate with the names of the betrothed and put it, along with a few hundred other plaques, in one of a series of small cubes to be released into space from the International Space Station. Astronauts will memorialize the launching by taking photographs, which will then be sent to the newlyweds. The service costs $270.

AWESOME! Painesville (Ohio) Municipal Court Judge Michael Cicconetti has a reputation for serving up unusual sentences, and he delivered again on July 24 when 18-year-old Bayley Toth appeared in his courtroom. Toth was convicted of two misdemeanor criminal mischief charges for toppling a portable toilet at Painesville Township Park in June, among other things. Cicconetti sentenced him to 120 days in jail, but suspended it in lieu of Toth shoveling ... manure at the Lake County Fair. "You act like an animal, you're going to take care of animals," Cicconetti told Toth. The News-Herald reported Toth will also have to perform 40 hours of community service and pay restitution for damage to the park. {in}
