Have you ever wondered about your dog's genetic background? Like which specific breeds are in their history and how August 3, 2017

those breeds contribute to their looks, traits and health? If you have a mixed breed or even

a purebred dog, the answer to that question is probably yes. Wanting to know more, and then even more, is the hallmark of a good pet owner after all. Thanks to an Austin-based company called Embark you can now get more answers about your dog's genes than ever before just by swabbing their cheek. Embark is the only comprehensive doggie DNA test on the market and has tested tens of thousands of dogs since it launched, said Embark Co-founder and Chief Science Officer Dr. Adam Boyko. Why might someone want to DNA test his or her dog? Well, according to Boyko, with DNA testing you are helping to maximize your dog's health, while also contributing to Embark's mission of ending preventable disease in dogs. The test provides results for over 150 genetic health conditions your dog could have. He said, that results include a detailed report to help you and your veterinarian plan the best care for your dog. "We strive to make sure your dog is able

to go for long walks, play fetch and roll in their favorite puddle for as long as possible," Boyko said. The company tests for over 175 breeds and is highly accurate, he said. But the precise level of accuracy depends on the dog. For dogs that are recent mixes of two or three breeds, the company almost always get it spot on, but for dogs that are a mix of many breeds over generations, he said, Embark strives to identify the main breeds that contribute your dog's ancestry. Of course, finding out all these precious details about your pup isn't cheap. The test costs $199 and takes six to eight weeks for results. But you can save money if you have more than one pup by using the coupon code MULTIPACK. With that code two kits receive a 10 percent discount, three receive a 15 percent discount and four or more dogs receive a 20 percent discount. {in} For more information about Embark visit embarkvet.com. 13

Reader submissions are our favorite part of making The Pet Issue, and based on how many of you email us every summer, we think it's safe to assume it's your favorite part too. That's why we're dedicating three full pages to your pets once again. From a picture perfect pug (yeah, we're talking about

you, Gus) to a hedgehog with the best name ever (Queso!), this year's collection of photos might just be our best yet. It's for sure got way more cats than we normally see, so shout out to all you cat owners who stepped up and showed off your feline friends. We wish we could print all the photos we get, but we just

can't. We promise that deciding who gets in and who doesn't isn't personal though and is in no way a reflection of your pets' cuteness. It just comes down to photo quality and we can't print images that are too small, too blurry or too dark. So if you emailed us a photo and don't see it, please try again next year (with a better picture, of course). {in}
