Laika I adopted my first dog three years ago. About two months later, we published our first issue dedicated pets. Coincidence? Of course not. I just knew if I was reading, researching and obsessing so much over my pup, Tucker, I probably wasn’t alone. I also really wanted a reason to put a photo of my little guy in the paper and again

Charlie I figured other people would too. Turns out I was right. We get more reader pet photo submissions than we ever imagined, and last year The Pet Issue beat out everything else we did in terms of online readership numbers. So of course, we had to do it again, and we had to make it even better. And by better, I mean cuter. We are talking about pets after all.

This week marks a milestone for Inweekly—our first ever issue with multiple covers. We just couldn’t pick between a dog and cat this year, so we decided we’d let you do it on the newsstand. It was also our first (and hopefully only) photo shoot to end in a trip to the emergency room.

Our models: Luna the Frenchie—who was recently adopted by Kris Poore. Thankfully Kris still likes us and took getting stitches for the first time in stride. Avalanche the kitty—who is actually from Humane Society of Pensacola. To see all of their current adoptable pets visit humanesocietyofpensacola.org. August 7, 2014

Have you ever wanted to tell off a local politician? Or a national one? Or a Kardashian? Well, here’s your chance. We are getting ready for our annual Rant Issue and we’d love to hear what’s been pissing you off. Nothing is off limits—politics, pop culture, parking tickets… Email your rants to Joani (joani@inwekly.net) and don’t worry about being too mean or getting in trouble. We promise to keep them all anonymous.

winners DERRICK BROOKS The Washington High graduate, Florida State All-American and Tampa Bay All Pro was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. He has won championships wherever he has played. While he set the standard for weak side linebackers, off the field, Brooks raised the bar for how professional athletes give back to their communities. His charter school, BrooksDeBartolo Collegiate High School, and his Brooks Bunch college program have improved thousands of lives.

CLAY INGRAM Another one of Coach

Bobby Bowden’s boys made news recently. State Rep. Clay Ingram has helped broker a tentative deal between Escambia County and the Emerald Coast Utility Authority that may end the two-year dispute over trash collection, disposal and recycling. Ingram’s leadership and diplomacy helped bring the sides together and avoid a lengthy, expensive court battle.

JEFF MILLER Our Congressmen won a major victory for our veterans when the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed his bipartisan bill reforming the U.S. Veterans Affairs department, sending $17 billion to help its medical facilities. The agreement designates $10 billion for veterans to seek private care if dealing with extended waits at VA medical centers. Veterans who live more than 40 miles from a VA medical center will also be eligible for private care.

losers LARRY B. JOHNSON The city council-

man has a new enemy to bully. He wants to investigate fellow Council member Sherri Myers for doing the same thing he did two years ago when he interfered with the city’s negotiations with the police union and repeatedly attacked the mayor’s chief of staff in council meetings. The timing of Johnson’s latest rampage coincides with Myer’s reelection campaign.

GEORGE SHELDON The president of the

Democratic Black Caucus of Florida, Henry Crespo, has said the Democrat should step aside in his Aug. 26 primary race for Florida Attorney General. Sheldon's Florida Bar license has lapsed. To reinstate it, Sheldon signed an exemption that stated he had been a nonresident living in Washington D.C. from 2011 to October 2013 while working at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Florida Constitution requires Attorney General candidates to live in Florida the preceding seven years.

The Pensacola City Council needs to increase the mayor’s salary. At $100,000 a year, it’s far too low for the demands placed on the office. The city of Pensacola controls assets that are critical to the growth of our economy— Pensacola International Airport, Port of Pensacola, Pensacola Bay waterfront and Maritime Park. The mayor, by virtue of being the chief executive officer of the city, plays a major role in most economic development efforts in Northwest Florida. He needs to be paid more. The Pensacola City Council set the mayor’s salary in 2010. The council looked at the salaries of the mayors of Mobile, Ala. ($89,000), Plantation, Fla. ($117,221), Hialeah, Fla. ($155,250) and other cities. They decided that $100,000 was appropriate compensation considering the city’s population, 54,925. The decision was made over the objections of the Pensacola Charter Review Commission that had recommended $145,000. Charter Commission Chairman Crystal Spencer argued that the commission wanted to attract qualified candidates from the private sector to a position that came with considerably more responsibility than the ceremonial mayor under the city-manager form of government.

After observing the mayor’s new role over the past four years, I agree with the charter commission that the job deserves a higher salary. For the city to be a major player in the region, the mayor must be able to act on a global scale and represent the city on a much larger stage than ever before. The city is fortunate that Ashton Hayward was willing to give up some of his prime earning years to serve, and his challenger this year, Donna Clark, has agreed to do the same. However, we may not be so lucky in future elections. The mayor’s pay needs to be more in line with the county’s constitutional officers. Clerk of Courts Pam Childers, Tax Collector Janet Holley and Property Appraiser Chris Jones make $134,760. Sheriff David Morgan makes $143,676. The head of Pensacola’s city government should have a salary somewhere in that ballpark. We don’t want a salary that is so lucrative that people would run solely for the paycheck, but we do want people who are worthy of such compensation. This city budget cycle is the time for the Pensacola City Council to discuss this issue. If they can look past the personalities and current conflicts, I think they will agree the salary needs to be higher. After all, you get what you pay for. {in} rick@inweekly.net

QUALITY OF LIFE STILL UPWARD On Aug. 5, the

WAHOOS RANKED THE BEST Turnkey Intelligence has ranked the Pensacola Blue Wahoos the first out of 42 minor league baseball teams in customer satisfaction. The company surveyed full, partial and single-game ticket holders of 17 Double-A and 25 TripleA baseball teams. The survey solicited feedback on an array of topics related to game attendance and interaction with the fan's respective organization. For the Blue Wahoos, 3,000 season ticket holders and 30,000 single-game ticket holders received the survey. Turnkey Intelligence computed the Net Promoter Score (NPS), a tool used to gauge customer satisfaction across a multitude of industries. The average NPS was 34. By comparison, Disney Theme Parks and the Ritz Carlton have an NPS of 62. The Blue Wahoos’ NPS was 83. The Average Fan Satisfaction for participating clubs was 8.3. The Wahoos rated 9.4. The Average Net Promoter Gameday Experience for the 42 teams surveyed was 58, Wahoos 83 (out of 100). “Staff and fan satisfaction have been the Wahoos' top priorities from day one,” said Quint Studer, co-owner of the Blue Wahoos. “The fact that the Wahoos' Net Promoter Score is more than twice the average of other teams surveyed is a credit to the talented employees who deliver the best fan experience in minor league baseball each day.” Studer said that he was proud the team rated above stellar organizations like Disney and the Ritz Carlton is outstanding. “While we have always measured fan satisfaction internally, to now have an independent company confirm there is no better place to enjoy a great fan experience than a Wahoos game affirms we are on the right track,” he said. “We commend all teams that signed up to be surveyed—it shows they also have the right focus.”

Pensacola Young Professionals released the sixth annual Quality of Life survey. It showed little significant change from last year’s poll, though the attitude toward Escambia County government did drop slightly. Mason-Dixon Polling & Research conducted the poll the week after Memorial Day, less than a month after the April floods and the explosion at the Escambia County Jail. Those who felt Escambia County was headed in the right direction went from 58 percent last year to 55 percent in May 2014, but that percentage was still the second highest rating over the six years the poll has been conducted. Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward rebounded among the 150 city voters polled, but still fell short of his peak positive performance rating of 76 percent in June 2012, when he was only 15 months in office. His 2014 positive rating among city voters was 67 percent, up from 64 percent the previous year. Countywide his positive rating jumped two percentage points, 53-55 percent. As far as the mayor’s vision and leadership, the percentage of city voters who said the city was headed in the right direction was up three points, 71-74 percent, but down 30 percent from 2012 when 9-in-10 voters believed Hayward had the city headed on the right course. Countywide voters have been increasingly more positive about the direction of the city of Pensacola, 61-63 percent. For the sixth consecutive year, jobs and the economy topped the list of concerns facing Escambia County and Pensacola. Crime and drugs placed second for the second year in a row. For 2014, PYP expanded the survey to rate the performance of other elected officials. School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas had 56 percent rate him good or excellent, one point higher than Mayor Hayward’s countywide rating. The boards didn’t fair as well. The Escambia County School Board had the highest positive rating, 46 percent, followed by the Escambia County Commission, 32 percent, and the Pensacola City Council, 28 percent. The full report can be found at pensacolaYP.com. {in}

The only escape from the miseries of life are music and cats... —Albert Schweitzer

For the third year in a row, we asked you guys to send us photos of your pets. And boy, did you deliver. Not only did we get an abundance of cats and dogs, we also got our first ever

ferret and a chicken with the coolest name ever. Of course, some of you sent us what we can only assume is every picture you’ve ever taken of your beloved pet. While we

can totally relate to that kind of enthusiasm, we had to edit them down. You understand, right? Also if you sent in a photo and don't see it, it's probably because something

was a little off with the image quality (too small, too dark, too much owner, not enough cat…). So if your pet didn't make the cut, please try again next year (with a better photo of course).

The average dog is a nicer person than the average person. —Andy Rooney

DON’T BULLY MY BREED

Pet Friendly P'cola Sure, you and your pet might get turned away from Gallery Night and those pesky “no pets allowed” signs are still posted all around Palafox Market on Saturdays. But Pensacola is making strides in the pet friendly city department. When we started doing The Pet Issue three years ago, we rarely saw dogs downtown, but now it’s an everyday occurrence—especially around lunch time and happy hour. And because our staff is almost entirely made up of dog lovers, we couldn’t be happier about this trend.

by Sarah McCartan

Here are some of our favorite pet friendly dining establishments—most of which not only welcome pups, but offer them water bowls:

Al Fresco (501 S. Palafox, eatalfresco.com) Cactus Flower Cafe (3425 N. 12th Ave., cactusflowercafe.net)

Hopjacks Pizza Kitchen and Taproom (10 S. Palafox, hopjacks.com) Hub Stacey’s Downtown (12 E. Government St., hubstaceys.com)

PET TALES:

My First “Baby” by Samantha

People that tell you being a pet owner is the perfect way to prepare you for having kids are lying. Sure, it has similarities—like it requires a decent level of responsibility and it’s not always easy. But really it’s like comparing a jog around the block to running a daily marathon. We stumbled into “parenthood” with our dog, Sake, pretty haphazardly and without a lot of forethought. It started with a stray cat showing up at our house one night, some instant bonding via a can of tuna, and then some crushed dreams when my husband started having allergic sneezing fits. I convinced him it was a sign that we needed to get a dog—immediately. I had my heart set on a Boston terrier, so we went to the shelter with the intention to check out a Boston mix, but instead fell in love with a crazy spotted and striped puppy. I quickly became an expert dog mom—meaning I bought a book from the Target dollar bin—and taught her this really awesome trick to ring a bell when she had to go pee. I was convinced she was a genius. I seriously considered teaching her to paint (Google it —people actually do that!), researched how to teach dogs to read, and developed an addiction to the Dog Whisperer. I was a bit obsessed. Luckily that stage wore off, and I became far more relaxed. Sake pretty much epitomized the term “fur baby” for me, quelling those baby urges a bit before we were truly ready for kids. I held her constantly and also taught her to kiss me on the mouth, which was a terrible idea because she still tries to do it to unsuspecting guests. Imagine a 40-pound dog leaping up at you for a kiss...yeah. And prior to Sake, I certainly never imagined myself nerding out over the toy aisle at Pet Smart or counting down the days until I could shop for pet Halloween costumes. Having Sake prior to our kids was a great decision, regardless of how little we actually thought it out at the time. They have a really awesome symbiotic relationship: she lets them pet her and yank on her tail in exchange for scarfing down all the food they drop on the floor. Our family is all the more kickass with her in it. We will always fondly regard her as our first “baby,” but we know it’s not exactly true. For one, pets are way more tolerant and easy going. So I will say, if you can’t deal with being a pet owner, it just might be a slight indicator that you should hold off a bit on the human kind, you know, if that’s something you’re considering.

PET TALES:

Loving Chika by Ed

HOW TO MOURN YOUR PET

If you’ve ever owned a dog, then you probably know the feeling of walking out into the backyard early one morning with a shovel in hand to say farewell to a friend. I’ve done this a few times in life. The first time was with a cocker spaniel that my dad playfully named “Chika.” She was my childhood dog, and she lived with our family through it all. Once while living in Long Beach, California, an oil refinery across the street caught fire and our entire neighborhood was forcefully evacuated to a nearby shelter. We had been away the entire afternoon. By the time we returned, the police had already barricaded our street. Once we got settled into the shelter, my sister and I realized that Chika was still in the house, frightened and trapped. Ironically, we too were alone. As is a sailor’s life, our dad was out to sea. As my sister and I sat there with tears settling on our faces, my mother had a difficult decision to make. Stay here where it’s safe or risk the unknown and dangerous trek back home to rescue our family dog? One look at us and she knew what she had to do. We all piled in and sped toward Navy housing and the burning oil refinery. We reached the police barricade. “Ma’am, you can’t go in there,” the officer politely but confidently explained. “I know, but we just need 10 minutes,” my mom responded. And before the officer could argue, she hit the gas pedal and pulled past the barricade. The car screeched to a stop. “Kids don’t move.” And in less than a minute, she was back with Chika. I’m sure looking back, there was some risk calculation involved when my mom decided to make a run for it to rescue the family dog. But in that moment, my mom was my hero. She was our protector and nothing was too scary or too dangerous to stop her. When Chika died 13 years later, my mom waited patiently for me to come home from school before doing anything. She grabbed my hand, walked me out to the garage and told me it was time to say goodbye. I spent the entire night in the garage building a casket for her. I wanted to bury her alone. As a boy I learned a lot from Chika, like loyalty and how to care for something. But most importantly, she taught me about unconditional love. As a man, we lose those life lessons from time to time. And that’s why I always try to keep a dog in my life.

Grieving When Your Pet is Alive

If your pet is battling an illness or reaching old age, it can be tough to watch. But remember to really cherish what time you have. Comfort your pet, let him or her indulge in their favorite foods, take them to the park, give them long belly rubs. If your pet is suffering and you’re considering euthanasia, there is the option of saying goodbye in the comfort of your own home. Davis Animal Hospital (davispetvet. com) is a local veterinary office that offers it. It’s a personal decision and there’s no exact way to handle it. Talk to your veterinarian about euthanasia and if an in-home option is available.

Spoon "THEY WANT MY SOUL"

It’s been four years since “Transference” became the first Spoon album to ever put me to sleep. Following that gap, several Britt Daniels’ side projects, the addition of a new member, and an absolutely brilliant marketing campaign, we have the new album. It’s called “They Want my Soul,” and I have never been happier with a Spoon LP. Don’t get me wrong, “Gimme Fiction” is classic, “Kill the Moonlight” is monumental, and “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga” is a hell of a lot of fun, but “They Want My Soul” is absolutely flawless. It sounds like they aren’t really trying that hard. What I mean by that is it’s a light album, not

a lot of heavy themes or overly technical compositions. For the most part, it’s simply a strong pop-rock record, containing the band’s best hopes for mainstream success. Earlier this year, I noticed Spoon was having a sale on their T-shirts, so I bit and bought a couple. Little did I know this was a very creative way of getting addresses to promote their new album. A couple of weeks after I got the shirts, I got an eerie box in the mail. Inside there were several stickers, a button, postcard, and a T-shirt that said, “Spoon R.I.P June 10.” I initially took this to mean that the band were calling it quits and would release something on June 10. I had half of it right. “R.I.P.”, I would soon come to find out, means ‘Rent I Pay,’ the first single from “They Want My Soul,” which was released on June 10. Honestly, it didn’t seem like their strongest foot, but more like sticking a finger in the air to get acclimated. Seemingly, every two weeks or so, another single would drop. The tracks that followed, ‘Do You’ and ‘Inside Out’ caught my attention in a much more brash way. ‘Do You’ is emotive and urgent, while still remaining catchy and upbeat. ‘Inside Out’ is five minutes of elegant, pulsating perfection, and upon first listen entered my top ten favorite songs from this year. These forerunners offered a good taste of what the finished product

would sound like. ‘Rainy Taxi’ is on point and quick, with a feel of feverish space running throughout. ‘Knock Knock Knock’ tells us what a collaboration with Danger Mouse would sound like. While ‘Inside Out’ is the highlight of the album for me, it was given a run for its money by ‘New York Kiss,’ a hazy, poignant, danceable track that closes the album. Collectively, I think this is the band’s strongest group of songs. I feel that Spoon is an American classic, deserving of the same cred given to Wilco and My Morning Jacket. Hopefully this album will open them up to a broader audience, and we can forget about “Transference.” Either way, they completely redeemed themselves with me. “They Want My Soul” is out now via Loma Vista Records.

news of the weird PERSPECTIVE Jeff Mizanskey, 61, is a poster child for one well- known criticism of mandatory-minimum sentencing laws—that nonviolent marijuana users (and small-time sellers) may wind up doing decades of hard time and in fact more time than some sociopathic offenders serve for heinous offenses. Mizanskey is 20 years into a life sentence with no possibility of parole for several violations of Missouri's "prior and persistent drug offender" law, and his only chance for freedom is a clemency plea now under consideration by Gov. Jay Nixon (and still opposed by Mizanskey's prosecutor). WEIRD OLD WORLD Unconventional Food Prep: Leaked photographs taken by an undercover health and safety officer at China's Tongcheng Rice Noodle Factory in Dongguan city in June show workers in street clothes casually walking back and forth atop piles of vermicelli noodles about to be packaged for shipment to stores. Some workers were even seen lounging or sleeping on the mountains of noodles. (In 1992, News of the Weird noted that health officials in South Dennis, Massachusetts, had closed the Wing Wah Chinese restaurant for various violations, including the restaurant's habit of draining water from cabbage by putting it in cloth laundry bags, placing the bags between pieces of plywood in the parking lot and driving over them with a van.) POLICE REPORT Inexplicable: (1) Alonzo Liverman, 29, was arrested in June in a Daytona Beach, Florida, police sting on prostitutes' johns. "I'm hungry," was the female officer's come-on. Responded Liverman, "I got a salad." Even though no salad was found on Liverman, police determined the banter constituted a sufficient offer for paid sex. (2) The robber of a Chase Bank in Tucson, Arizona, in March is still on the loose even though surveillance video has been widely distributed. An additional detail from the video: The man pulled the holdup while carrying a small dog in a basket. THE JUSTICE ANGLE In the midst of the city of Detroit's water crackdown—shutting off the spigots of residents delinquent on their bills—the Council of Canadians has come to the rescue. First, the council pressed the United Nations to label Detroit's program a "human rights" violation (the denial of clean drinking water to the 3,000 homes per week being shut down). Said the council chair, "I've (only) seen this (oppression) in the poorest countries in the world." Second, the council arranged a convoy of "good Canadian, public, clean water" into Detroit in July to modestly help the estimated 79,000 homes in peril.

• Ms. Ajanaffy Njewadda and her husband recently filed a lawsuit against New York City's transit authority (MTA) following her tumble down some stairs at a subway station (which caused a broken ankle, concussion and lingering trauma that has required psychiatric care). The MTA had placed a large ad for the serial-killer TV series "Dexter" on station stairs, positioned to be seen just as visitors left the subway. Ms. Njewadda said she was momentarily terrified by the ad and lost her balance. • Oh, Dear!: A man whose name was withheld ("D.B.") filed a lawsuit in April against medical clinics and physicians who performed his colonoscopy in Fairfax, Virginia, in 2013, based on what the patient learned from audio his smartphone recorded while he was unconscious. Though he originally intended to record only doctors' instructions, he was dismayed to know that they began "mocking" him the second he went under, making disparaging and untrue statements about his health, feigning disgust at his body ("Oh! Oscar Mike Goss!") (slang for "OMG"—oh, my God), threatening to "fire a gun up his rectum," "diagnosing" him with syphilis or "tuberculosis in the penis," and threatening to (falsely) note hemorrhoids on his record—all done amidst gales of laughter. DONKEYS RISING (1) In Turkey, some shepherds have outfitted their sheep-monitoring donkeys with solar panels and battery packs to illuminate nighttime isolated fields in emergencies. Thus, for instance, pregnant animals can be aided during field births and not have to return to the farms. (2) In an interview with Vice.com, the Swiss founder of Eurolactis touts donkey milk as the preferred substitute for cow milk—since donkeys have only one stomach, as humans have. (Cows, goats and sheep have multiple stomachs to break down their complex milk, but that milk gives humans digestion problems.) On the other hand, as Vice.com pointed out, milkdrinkers, especially, must learn to ignore the A-word nickname for "donkey."

RECURRING THEMES The most recent murder suspect to whine about his oppressive jail conditions appears to be Adam Landerman, 21, awaiting trial in the grisly 2013 murders of two people. In July, his patience apparently exhausted, he filed court papers in Joliet, Illinois, complaining that the jail's towels are too small, the jail offers no barber or beautician services or shaving cream, and the food is "monotonous and undiversified," among other inadequacies. {in} From Universal Press Syndicate Chuck Shepherd’s News Of The Weird © 2014 Chuck Shepherd
