Welcome From the moment your son arrives at The Beacon, he will be encouraged, educated and enthralled by a dedicated team of professional teachers and staff with one aim: to make every day at school a memorable one.

The Beacon is a school where boys thrive and acquire learning and social skills that will last a lifetime. The Thrill of Discovery Your son’s first steps in education will be an adventure of discovery and learning in a stimulating and secure environment. The Beacon’s five core values are embedded into our curriculum from day one.

Wellbeing, integrity, respect, achievement and courage are fundamental to the life of the School. All our teachers at The Beacon identify opportunities to promote, demonstrate and assess progress towards upholding these values from Reception all the way through to Year 8.

F iring Curiosity In a world of targets and assessments we are determined to keep the love of learning and discovery burning brightly in all our boys.

In Lower School (Years 3 and 4) your son will be taught core subjects by his Class Teacher with Specialist Teachers for International Studies (Modern Foreign Languages), Sport, Art, Design & Technology, Drama, IT and Music. The House system is also introduced and your son will take part in inter-school events, fostering team spirit and drive.

In Middle School (Years 5 and 6), your son will continue to grow in independence and responsibility. His ability to reflect, to communicate and to collaborate with others will expand. Our tutor system is introduced to coincide with Specialist Teachers in all subjects, sharing their love and knowledge of their chosen subject with our boys.

Building Core Strengths The academic core skills are at the heart of everything we do at The Beacon, underpinning every subject and activity. Expert teachers will work with your son to create a solid foundation upon which he can build and develop. Wherever your son’s talents lie, he will be supported and encouraged in every discipline to explore and discover new strengths and abilities.

The Beacon is also dedicated to teaching our boys how to learn, instilling key core learning skills such as independent thinking, teamwork and co-operation.

Engaging Heart, Mind and Body Sport for all is exactly what The Beacon provides. At whatever level your son is playing, he will be coached and encouraged to develop a love for sport which will last all his life. During his time on The Beacon playing fields, your son will gain vital skills for adulthood: teamwork, creativity and a ‘can-do’ attitude with a ‘never-give-up’ determination.

Stimulating Creativity Music, Drama, Art and Design & Technology are integral to The Beacon from Reception upwards. As well as developing skills in performance and characterisation, your son will visibly grow in confidence and creativity, improving his communication, his team ethics, and his collaborative and innovative abilities.

100s of Adventures to Explore Do you remember the adventure of your first school trip? The excitement of getting on the coach and going somewhere different with your class? The fun of seeing and touching interactive exhibits and exploring a new place with your friends? Our Beacon trips take place from Reception through to Year 8, ranging from day trips in the UK to residential trips abroad. They will engage and excite your son across all subject areas, enhancing and re-affirming his enjoyment of learning.

Caring and Supporting Health, wellbeing and happiness are attributes we all wish for our children. Strong pastoral care at The Beacon will surround your son throughout his time here, allowing him to grow and develop in a safe, secure and happy environment. He can feel the thrill of taking risks, learn how to deal gracefully with both setbacks and successes, and build the resilience and confidence that will sustain him through all the changes and challenges of modern life.

We have a dedicated School Counsellor who provides incredible support for boys and their families, as well as a Medical Centre run by qualified staff and led by a full-time Matron.

Deepening Understanding In Upper School (Years 7 and 8), the curriculum is enriched by our ‘PSB at The Beacon’ programme (Prep School Baccalaureate), which is designed to foster leadership, independent learning and breadth of knowledge. The opportunity to mature at the upper end of the Prep School gives your son time and space to explore the subjects he really loves, without the upheaval of a completely new and different school environment. Upper School prepares the boys fully for senior school and beyond, enabling your son to grow into a confident and competent young man.
